I'm very lucky to have been able to play all these games, both in the arcade and on console. I actually still have my physical copies for some of these, too. Thank you for taking the time to go back and try it out; it was a lot of fun to watch someone else experience it for the first time!
As a massive FG fan, PJ is one of my desert island games. Coolest mechanic is the Tardy Cancel. Easiest pass / fail knowledge check in all of fighting games.
@@CDROMFossil Tardy Cancel is literally just executing any command normal (fwd+heavy / dwnfwd+heavy air launchers), special move, or super move during blockstun. This adds four total frames of extra animation time to the attack - two during the Tardy Cancel animation, and two onto the startup of the move being performed - making the attack just under 1/10 of a second slower. If successful (meaning you hit them before they hit you), you land your hit as a counterhit and deal greater damage. If their followup hits you before that move executes, you take 1.25x damage for the remainder of their string. This can be done at any point in blockstun, meaning that you can very easily guess wrong against a portion of a blockstring or misread a fast / weak special followup that outpaces the startup of your chosen attack. It’s a very simple combination of gamble & knowledge check that can have absolutely devastating consequences when used well.
The main reason the sequel was named Project Justice was due to timing. The Columbine School shooting had just happened about 2 years prior, and the American public was still a little sensitive when it came to schools and violence. So they went with a safer name. And it still makes sense within the context of the story.
DOA on Dreamcast was fun. All that boob giggle was 💯 😂 Project Justice was a lot of fun. All these games I rented from Block Buster and Game Crazy. I have some of these on my Xbox Dev kit so they’re fun to go back to here and there.
Never got around playing this one, but I did play Rival Schools a bunch, way back on PS1. The way the camera panned when you juggled someone midair was so cool lol. Felt like you were really high up. In general this IP was really awesome and unique in my opinion. The setting was fresh, unused (still is to this day) and together with the crunchy PS1 visuals and goated soundtrack, it left some good memories.
It's really interesting hearing a casual perspective on this game. as i'm more into fighters, and like being able to do cool stuff in them myself, games like sf alpha 3 and soulcalibur i just never quite understood the mechanics enough to feel right for me, i can't really enjoy a fighter unless i feel i understand enough of the gameplay. meanwhile both this and doa2 are probably my favorite dreamcast fighters for being a bit easier to pick up and do combos in, doa's counter hold rock paper scissors type system and project justice's air combos are both just so fun and easy to understand to me compared to other fighters. i actually kinda agree that i have more fun with rival schools 1 and i have no idea why, something about the presentation maybe? what makes rival schools and project justice so special to me are how the story and characters are, everyone has a connection to someone else on the roster, they all know each other, while some fighting games feel like so little of the roster interact. the story mode of the games are great because they actually have a followable story, even as an outsider like you said, and project justice having different paths is still not something i've seen in other fighters. and there's just something so fun about the idea of fighting game characters all based on school. it's really a shame both games had huge parts taken out of the western releases, the first game had a whole visual novel/dating sim type mode in japan plus the board game mode for project justice. i just hope capcom at least makes a collection of these games, either just for the rival schools series, or a collection full of their other 3d fighters like star gladiator/plasma sword and tech romancer. (both of which also on dreamcast)
To me Rival Schools just has a way cooler presentation and the gameplay feels a lot....quicker I guess? I dunno I just feel way more into Rival Schools while Project Justice feels more like a fun game. Like a fun with friends at a party kinda game I dunno lol. This video is generating a lot of feedback so I may do another video like this and use it as an excuse to go more in depth into Project Justice. Like you I wish we got the dating sim/board game stuff. More content to go through ya know?
Looks like the next KOF game can learn from Project Justice. Though the Dreamcast and Project Justice didn't achieve worldwide fame as its contemporaries, I could see a future KOF game take some mechanics from this game like tag supers and team supers once they go back to the tag battle format.
Project Justice has a special place in my heart. I met most of my current friends through playing that game in the arcade during my college years. I'm glad people will now have a chance to rediscover it. Also, CvS games had my most favorite sprites in all of fighting games!
Wonderful video! This is the fighting game that taught me fighting games. From command normals to air combos, Project Justice is very near and dear to me.
If you haven't yet, Street Fighter Ex+Alpha on the PS1 is an amazing installment. Also, I remember getting the JPN versions of Rival Schools 1 and 2 on my modded Playstation back in the day. Amazing games!
I miss this game my local arcade decided to phase out the good ol Project Justice cabinet. I was one of the regulars there for years had plenty of friendly and money matches too. I use a basic but effective team of Momo, Powered Akira/Yurika and Roberto. With Momo to lead the team with her very annoying tardy counters very fast low & mid pokes and if ever she goes down, Roberto picks up the slack with his high and low pokes, ball projectile, evasive moves can be used to frustrate opponents or make them miss an attack leading to a punish, and Powered Akira/Yurika if I wanted to play a bit defensive with pokes, tardy counters and stances. Kyosuke is pretty busted able to use a triple party up attack as an air combo from a high launcher its a filthy dirty move to pull out. With the power of FRIENDSHIP !!
one of my favorite fighting games on the system and may even be one of my favorite 3D fighters up there with Soul Calibur. but im also not huge into fighters like most people as i only play them casually but great choice with playing Capcom VS SNK growing up that game rules
I got this game along with Tech Romancer soon after Sega abadonds the console and a shop was getting ride of Dreamcast games, it was very cheap, around 3 euros each game. I had no idea it was that expenside now, I'm also surprise how different the European and the American boxes are
This game is a gem. We need a remaster of project justice with online vs and roll back netcode so we can get a rival school's 3 in the works. I'm so tired of Capcom only focusing on street fighter , when they have so many titles in the vault like rival school, and dark stalkers
I have this game got a Japanese import for cheap and a dreamcast for cheap as well got it region free so I can play any version of the game it's pretty fun to play with friends
I really dug Project Justice but sucks i never really got to play people cause nobody i knew in my arcade liked playing on console but my friend who introduced me to it.
Dreamcast was the first system I bought with my own money and the system I spent the most time on. These are some fighters I either played or remembered that weren't mentioned. Not a full list, there's some fighters I don't remember the name for or non-US exclusives that I never heard of. 2D Dreamcast games: Fatal Fury: Mark of the Wolves (Garou) - The best of the tons of SNK 2d fighters imo Marvel vs Capcom 1 & 2 - Fast paced capcom-vs action and still played today. 2 is the best 2d fighter on console imo Capcom vs SNK 1 & 2 - Tons of characters. Great if you're looking for a more traditionally paced capcom fighter that also provides a ton of options. If you haven't played the first one I recommend trying out since it is so different from the second game with a ratio system where you might end up having 4 characters vs 1 or anywhere in between. Guilty Gear X - Great game and a look back at an older Arc Sys fighter The Last Blade 2 - non KOF SNK weapon based fighter. Highly recommend Jojo's Bizarre Adventure - Perfect Capcom fighter if looking for non SF fighter. Well done graphics, anime fighter. Bunch of KOFs - never played Darkstalkers (JP) - THE Darkstalkers game to play for fans of the series. You can select fighting styles and characters from all previous games. Probably extremely rare due to it being a mail order exclusive in JP. 3d DC fighters: Virtua Fighter 3 - SEGA's iconic 3d fighter. Mortal Kombat Gold - worst game in the series Fighting Vipers 2 (JP) - SEGA's arcade fighter with body armor breaking Psychic Force 2012 - Don't know who made this but probably the worst 3d fighter I have ever played. All I remember is flying around shooting projectiles and laughing with my friends at how awful this game was. Maybe I was too harsh back then since I haven't played it since lol Plasma Sword - Never played it but only remember it because Hayato from MVC2 is in it and the super moves were so bizarre 3d DC arena fighters: Tech Romancer - Capcom robot fighter. never played WWF/ECW/UFC games - other systems had better WWF games. Never played ECW or UFC ones. Power Stone 1&2 - Capcom's arena fighter. I remember seeing these in the arcade as a kid. Fun when playing 4 player mode. Virtual On (not sure which one - Iconic SEGA arena fighter with mechs. Never played it Frame Gride (JP) - similar to virtual on but I only mention because it was made by FromSoftware (dark souls games) Heavy Metal & Spawn - Arcade arena fighter from Capcom I think. I played it a bunch as a kid unlocking characters but very brain dead and gets old quick. It's like a Dynamite Cop but a vs fighting game. Random thought: Dynamite Cop had the first instance of those dumb button timed events that I can think of. 2nd random thought: anyone remember bleamcast?
Me and my friend Ashlee went through the majority of the Dreamcast fighting game library and ranked them on our own personal best to worst lists. Mark of the Wolves is high on my list and Plasma Sword is super high on hers. I just didn't mention them all or else the video would have been much longer. Capcom vs SNK 2 is probably my favorite fighting game of all time and it was on Dreamcast just....only in JP. We got it on the PS2/Gamecube/Xbox of course tho
Not really, that "sequel" it's just an enhanced version of the first game, some new characters, same story, same graphics/engine, think of it as "Rival Schools Turbo". It has a 2 in the title but it's for the VN part. The first japanese version of RS already came with a VN side game, that's the one that got a sequel.
Believe it or not I started recording that a while back and shelved it because I didn't like how the video was turning out. Maybe I'll give it another shot!
Yeah it's a fun game. I liked the story in part 1 more 🤷🏾♀️ it sruck with me. I can't even remember the story in this one. Not saying it's bad. It just didn't click for me. No different the remembering the whole movie even if it's been 10 years since you watched it. It's just burned into my memory 😂 the combat was smoother in part 2. I remembered that
Project Justice is near and dear to my heart. Wish it got a re-release of some kind in this era!
I heart the series. Recently discovered FightCade and unsure if available.
We need a Rival collection alongside PowerStone... 🧞♂️
your prayers are heard.
It’s coming next year!!!

As a massive FG fan, PJ is one of my desert island games. Coolest mechanic is the Tardy Cancel. Easiest pass / fail knowledge check in all of fighting games.
I failed to mention the tardy cancel...partially because I could rarely pull it off (besides accidents lol)
