It makes a lot more sense for movie franchises for the directors to have some freedom but not to the extent that is normal in Hollywood. I read a leaked synopsis of The Force Awakens and it turns out that it's just a remake of Star Wars with a bit of Empire and Jedi mashed in there, but the general plot remains as "Main character finds important droid, leaves desert planet with Han Solo, learns about Force, captured by the bad guys, escapes to Rebel base, things main character duels main villain, things reach their darkest point, Rebels blow up superweapon, the end). There are some points where it feels very obviously J.J. Abrams-ish (especially concerning the characters and nuances of the plot itself, ESPECIALLY the ending). Also, the Force never really awakens at all...the Force is barely even in the movie.

Actually, Lucas wrote a super long screenplay that encompassed the storyline of the entire trilogy. He was told that it was too long and cut his 3 act story into 3 separate parts; each act being padded out into it's own film. He was influenced by serials but that had to do with plot elements in this case, not the structure of the films.
I was just thinking about how all of the characters from the original Star Wars AND Indiana Jones Sagas were not only killed by Disney, but their children and entire lineage were killed off as well. Seriously, thats just sick.
+PMRants his son, craig, was a producer, along with bryan, his grandson. craig knew and understood charles' vision of peanuts. he knew and understood what it meant to him. from what the wiki page says for the movie, craig had the idea for the movie, and bryan is a screenwriter and helped him with that. craig is also very protective of peanuts cause he knows what it meant to his dad so they wanted to make it as true and faithful as possible. i saw the movie opening weekend and i'd say they did a hell of a job. i think charles would've been proud.

I hope the Empire isn't too powerful in Episode VII... Or or or....Luke Skywalker may be a "bad guy" in this one. I don't think I've seen any trailer for #7 that shows him yet Mark Hamil is IN the movie. In #5 or #6 (I forget), Yoda says Luke is way too old to begin training (although he trains him anyways), but he says that for caution that Luke could transcend to "the dark side". This is kind of reinforced as he says the same thing about Anakin in #1 even though Annakin was just 10 years old. PERHAPS...30 years passing....Luke is the new emperor? Its a stretch. But I am not convinced this Rylo Ken fellow is of any real importance, JJ abrahms like to be very suspenseful.

There are many people he would talk to about the day to day business of the galaxy. In both the Legends and current continuities, they are part of the Imperial Ruling Council, the people just under Palpatine power-wise. They are the people who run the day-to-day business of the Empire.

Obviously the Empire wouldn't just collapse, but didn't the power behind it come from the Sith lords running the show? Personally I don't think it needs sequels, especially not movies. Episode 1 must have been targetted at early teens because when Episode 1 came out I really loved it and my friend who was big into Star Wars also loved it. In general I didn't hear much negativity until few years later.

I'm glad James also sees Star Wars as the story of Anakin Skywalker, really everything that happens in the films from ep 1 to Return of the Jedi has revolved around Anakin. His training, love battles all the way to his shame, regret and sins, then at the crux his redemption, the new movie(s) will be the story of a new generation, I just hope the movie's as true to the Lucas formula as possible. :P
I think Phantom Menace has merit over the other 2 films simply because it actually looks like a movie, it had animatronics, miniature sets and models, it was shot on location all throughout, the dialog scene have actual angles rather than the static ''over-the-shoulder'' formula that plagues the other 2 movies, not to mention it was shot on film, which is already better than Attack of the Clones where you can clearly see the green screen around the actors and Revenge of the Sith which has 0 sets.
Parker Krakowiak By location I mean that they actually built sets for things like the Trade Federation ship, they shot the forest scenes in actual forests and the majority of the Naboo scenes were shot on Italy

I totally agree with you, as bad as Ep 1 is it was by far the most memorable of the 3, it had the best light sabre duel at the end and the pod racing scene was pretty damn awesome tbh, I would watch an entire movie about jar jar than have to watch that god awful love scene again in Ep 2 the acting was by far the most painful I have seen in a big budget movie I have ever watched and the fact they destroyed one of the most bad arse characters in the franchise boba fett is just criminal.

In regards to the upcoming Star Wars films being fan fiction, I have a couple of thoughts. I think George Lucas probably gets too much credit for "creating" Star Wars. Gary Kurtz was producer for A New Hope and co-producer for Empire Strikes Back (though he and Lucas had creative disagreements, and he left before Return of the Jedi). He played a big role in focusing the story of the films, and contributed a lot of good ideas while reining in some of Lucas's wackier ones. Then you have Lawrence Kasdan, one of the screenwriters from Empire and Jedi who's coming back to write The Force Awakens. I hate to bring up the prequels, but think about what happened when Lucas made when he had complete creative control over the franchise, I certainly don't consider those films worthy successors to the original Star Wars trilogy, so I think it's reasonable to believe that Star Wars as a franchise doesn't need his stamp.

Oh my, I actually had a joking but same terrifying premonition. They would show the blue wish upon a star blue logo! When I finally got the stomach to go watch episode VII in the theater. (sorry nothing against Disney and it's industry leading work but to me it was like mixing oil and water) I thought to myself "I swear, if I see that blue castle screen come up with that song I AM OUTTA HERE!!!" I would demand my money back and if the theater refused, I would do my worst to contact Disney and tell them where to shove said money! (fortunately the latter never happened WHEW)
I think after spending $4 billion dollars, Disney can do whatever they want without it being considered fan fiction. There can't be any doubt who's in command of the star wars universe (since the previous owner handed it over), so there's no conflict over who gets to say what is canon.
Also James, the Neimoidian "frog things" weren't CGI. The irony is that Phantom Menace had a huge amount of practical effects, you can Google it if you don't believe me. Eps 2 and 3 seemed to have progressively less 'traditional' effects and went more into CGI and green screen.
+WavemasterAshi I think people are too hard on Phantom Menace. Attack of the Clones is far worse. Phantom Menace has some amazing action sequences such as the Pod Race, the Duel of the Fates, and some gorgeous background art straight out of sci-fi novel covers for the various cities they go to. I think Hayden's acting and the overall dull quality of Attack make it the worst movie of the prequel trilogy.

+TomasGregovich we know now that a lot of the great stuff and story about the originals didnt come from lukas himself, but from his wife and his cowriter. both he ignored in the prequels which sucked and all additions to the franchise made by lukas post release made it worse and worse - so i think it is a very good thing that this franchise is now taken away from him and given a new start - we will see what happens with it, disney proved that they can make great films out of material given to them (see avengers/guardians of the galaxy)

They're literally selling it to us on "Skywalker legacy" in that trailer, front and centre. So why do you think it'll veer away from that exactly?
Actually, Luke Skywalker isn't even in the movie at all until the very last scene, it focuses entirely on the girl and the black guy as well as the Ren villain character. Luke doesn't even show up until after Han Solo dies! Whoops, spoiler alert.
This playthrough explains why there's no cutscene between Luke arriving at the cantinia and getting on the Falcon because he just jumped his speeder into the back of the Falcon. :)

Happens to a lot of creative people who get uber famous. I doubt anybody is pushing George R. R. Martin to edit or change his books, even though they need it. Hell, he's gone on record as hating editors and thinks they're all evil or something, so he probably chucks his editor's invaluable advice right in the trash and nobody can tell him not to. Writers who don't appreciate their editors make me want to cut a bitch.

I don't know about everybody else but I see that there are multiple different versions of Star Wars storylines. Just like comic books for you can have various origin stories and they create their own timeline I believe that Star Wars is the same thing. We have the original trilogy, the Ewok adventures, droids cartoon, expanded universe, etc. then we have everything post special edition up until the Disney acquisition.
There's actually a fan translation of this game and it also explains why Darth Vader turns into these different animals. They're basically other darths in disguise.
I totally disagree that Episode 1 is the worst. At least it had the podrace, and 1 great lightsaber dual. Attack of the Clones is the worst because it had NOTHING. The CG was even more intrusive, the "romance" subplot with Anakin and Padme is one of the worst romances in film history, and the big battle at the end is laughable bad. Just dozens of extras running around on a green screen with prop sabers and no semblance of direction. AND THEY MADE YODA FIGHT...dumbest idea ever and totally ruining of the character. I hate that movie.
Fun fact, the Famicom version is bases off of the Star Wars Manga, or at least that's what I think because the weird Darth Vader scorpion thing appears in it

When I was a toddler, I had this Star Wars: The Phantom Menace sticker book that I was really afraid of because it had a stern-looking Amidala in full makeup and Darth Maul on the cover. I hope the Empire isn't too powerful in Episode VII... I mean the Emperor, Vader died and the Death Star blew up, I know there's still a huge amount of soldiers and starships out there, but if the Empire is still really powerful here it'll feel like it lessens the accomplishment in Return of the Jedi.

Or or or....Luke Skywalker may be a "bad guy" in this one. I don't think I've seen any trailer for #7 that shows him yet Mark Hamil is IN the movie. In #5 or #6 (I forget), Yoda says Luke is way too old to begin training (although he trains him anyways), but he says that for caution that Luke could transcend to "the dark side". This is kind of reinforced as he says the same thing about Anakin in #1 even though Annakin was just 10 years old.
PERHAPS...30 years passing....Luke is the new emperor? Its a stretch. But I am not convinced this Rylo Ken fellow is of any real importance, JJ abrahms like to be very suspenseful.

My counterpoint to the theory that they are "illuminati-looking" is that, well, Palpatine is the Emperor of the GALAXY. There are many people he would talk to about the day to day business of the galaxy. In both the Legends and current continuities, they are part of the Imperial Ruling Council, the people just under Palpatine power-wise. They are the people who run the day-to-day business of the Empire.

Obviously the Empire wouldn't just collapse, but didn't the power behind it come from the Sith lords running the show? I'm sure the new ones will be decent, at least better than the prequels, but I can't help thinking a lot of it is pretty much going to come down to mopping up the stragglers. Personally I don't think it needs sequels, especially not movies. What I'd do, is release a comic or cartoon that wraps a few things up and sets the stage, then set the next trilogy like 200 years in the future with no direct connection to the other movies.
Check out "Legacy Era". Grand Admiral Thrawn, and that stuff. Sadly that got voided because of these new movies. A movie about the Legacy era would have been cool.

Episode 1 must have been targetted at early teens because when Episode 1 came out I really loved it and my friend who was big into Star Wars also loved it. In general I didn't hear much negativity until few years later.

I'm glad James also sees Star Wars as the story of Anakin Skywalker, really everything that happens in the films from ep 1 to Return of the Jedi has revolved around Anakin. His training, love battles all the way to his shame, regret and sins, then at the crux his redemption, the new movie(s) will be the story of a new generation, I just hope the movie's as true to the Lucas formula as possible. :P
I think Phantom Menace has merit over the other 2 films simply because it actually looks like a movie, it had animatronics, miniature sets and models, it was shot on location all throughout, the dialog scene have actual angles rather than the static ''over-the-shoulder'' formula that plagues the other 2 movies, not to mention it was shot on film, which is already better than Attack of the Clones where you can clearly see the green screen around the actors and Revenge of the Sith which has 0 sets.

I totally agree with you, as bad as Ep 1 is it was by far the most memorable of the 3, it had the best light sabre duel at the end and the pod racing scene was pretty damn awesome tbh, I would watch an entire movie about jar jar than have to watch that god awful love scene again in Ep 2 the acting was by far the most painful I have seen in a big budget movie I have ever watched and the fact they destroyed one of the most bad arse characters in the franchise boba fett is just criminal.

In regards to the upcoming Star Wars films being fan fiction, I have a couple of thoughts. I think George Lucas probably gets too much credit for "creating" Star Wars. Gary Kurtz was producer for A New Hope and co-producer for Empire Strikes Back (though he and Lucas had creative disagreements, and he left before Return of the Jedi). He played a big role in focusing the story of the films, and contributed a lot of good ideas while reining in some of Lucas's wackier ones. Then you have Lawrence Kasdan, one of the screenwriters from Empire and Jedi who's coming back to write The Force Awakens. I hate to bring up the prequels, but think about what happened when Lucas made when he had complete creative control over the franchise, I certainly don't consider those films worthy successors to the original Star Wars trilogy, so I think it's reasonable to believe that Star Wars as a franchise doesn't need his stamp.

Oh my, I actually had a joking but same terrifying premonition. They would show the blue wish upon a star blue logo! When I finally got the stomach to go watch episode VII in the theater. (sorry nothing against Disney and it's industry leading work but to me it was like mixing oil and water) I thought to myself "I swear, if I see that blue castle screen come up with that song I AM OUTTA HERE!!!" I would demand my money back and if the theater refused, I would do my worst to contact Disney and tell them where to shove said money! (fortunately the latter never happened WHEW)

I think after spending $4 billion dollars, Disney can do whatever they want without it being considered fan fiction. There can't be any doubt who's in command of the star wars universe (since the previous owner handed it over), so there's no conflict over who gets to say what is canon.

Also James, the Neimoidian "frog things" weren't CGI. The irony is that Phantom Menace had a huge amount of practical effects, you can Google it if you don't believe me. Eps 2 and 3 seemed to have progressively less 'traditional' effects and went more into CGI and green screen.

Phantom Menace wasn't my favorite by far...there were only two scenes I liked. The Senate (call me bizarre if you want), and the Duel of the Fates.

Phantom Menace has some amazing action sequences such as the Pod Race, the Duel of the Fates, and some gorgeous background art straight out of sci-fi novel covers for the various cities they go to. I think Hayden's acting and the overall dull quality of Attack make it the worst movie of the prequel trilogy.

+TomasGregovich we know now that a lot of the great stuff and story about the originals didnt come from lukas himself, but from his wife and his cowriter. both he ignored in the prequels which sucked and all additions to the franchise made by lukas post release made it worse and worse - so i think it is a very good thing that this franchise is now taken away from him and given a new start - we will see what happens with it, disney proved that they can make great films out of material given to them (see avengers/guardians of the galaxy)

Honestly, I find the newer star wars movies better than the older ones. Probably because I wasn't sucked into the hype and have nostalgia about it.
taken as a whole so far, for better or worse, the pre-Abrams Star Wars films told the story of the Skywalker legacy. Force Awakens feels like it'll veer away from the Skywalkers

Actually, Luke Skywalker isn't even in the movie at all until the very last scene, it focuses entirely on the girl and the black guy as well as the Ren villain character. Luke doesn't even show up until after Han Solo dies!

I don't know about everybody else but I see that there are multiple different versions of Star Wars storylines. Just like comic books for you can have various origin stories and they create their own timeline I believe that Star Wars is the same thing. We have the original trilogy, the Ewok adventures, droids cartoon, expanded universe, etc. then we have everything post special edition up until the Disney acquisition.

I totally disagree that Episode 1 is the worst. At least it had the podrace, and 1 great lightsaber dual. Attack of the Clones is the worst because it had NOTHING. The CG was even more intrusive, the "romance" subplot with Anakin and Padme is one of the worst romances in film history, and the big battle at the end is laughable bad. Just dozens of extras running around on a green screen with prop sabers and no semblance of direction. AND THEY MADE YODA FIGHT...dumbest idea ever and totally ruining of the character. I hate that movie.

When I was a toddler, I had this Star Wars: The Phantom Menace sticker book that I was really afraid of because it had a stern-looking Amidala in full makeup and Darth Maul on the cover. I remember having a nightmare where those two broke into my house and I hid under the dining room table, trying really hard not to cry in fear.
Ugh. So sick of everyone picking on the prequels. To this day, I still like them better than the original trilogy.
