Hi guys! In regards to the lightsaber question and it being controlled by the force, we can rule it out because General Greivous from Ep III can't use the force, he's mostly a droid and he can wield up to 4 lightsabers at once.
Kyle Simmons Also didnt finn (the ex-stormtrooper) use it briefly in episode 7? But disney seems to have no grip on star wars lore anyways so greivous is probably a better example
I guess I'm in the minority, but I actually loved reading the instruction booklet as a kid. There were pictures, and it told you and prepared you about the game, gave you back story that might not get mentioned in the game.... I don't know, I would still read manuals if games had them anymore. It was satisfying holding that booklet.
Some instruction books were much better than others, depending on the games/system. I remember Sega Genesis manuals were garbage, black and white and cheap looking, compared to SNES/N64 manuals.
This is one of those Star Wars which actually would have made a great Star Wars movie in reality. Shadows of the Empire had a really good story which was in between Empire Strikes back and before Return of the Jedi.
@@toxicmanbaby1069 I think this could have made it as a live action series or spin off movie easily to be honest. A lot of things from the books and Star Wars expanded universe would work well.
I kept thinking when I was a kid that Shadows of the Empire was actually gonna be Episode 1 as well so you're totally not alone in that boat. Dash Rendar totally needs to show up in a movie at some point
Dash was such a boss character for me when I was a kid. Total badass I thought. There just wasn't much of him shown sadly. He seriously need his own story outside of Shadows of the Empire.
I like how everyone talks about the Han shot thing. Fun fact: Harrison Ford was asked about that scene being changed. All he said was: Don't know. Don't care.
Probably because he doesn't identify with the series. It was just a job for him. So who cares what he thinks? The dude is practically senile now anyway. The Han/Greedo alteration changed the tone of the character--it was significant (the Ewok song changed nothing significant, btw).
+lum0s filmmakers and actors can't focus their career on just one big project. Artist and creators have to move on to other things once they are done and start the same process all over again. That's the beauty of it, and that's where you get your adrenaline going again. Shooting a movie is like climbing a high mountain and once you get to the type you realized that it is the on of that and have to start all over again to claim that mountain all over again with another movie. It's like a normal person staying flipping burgers all of his life time. Eventually he would like to do something else in the company or move on to other things.
This is the only thing I hate about Harrison Ford. He never is cool with the fans and treats the whole thing like he is above it all. Sure its much different for him because he was making the movie and he is extremely lucky doing it but never throws a bone to fans.
I know I'm late to the comment party, but I think I read somewhere that the beam part of the saber is a very tight loop of energy that goes out and back into the hilt.
me too. guess it's too challenging for most though, cuz it gets an absurd amount of hate for such an amazing game. rogue squadron is pretty cool and is visually more impressive, but i never got into it the way i got into shadows.
I have to disagree with James and mike about the instructions. I miss the old instruction booklets. I use to sit down and read them, alot of the time on the way home from the store, getting all excited to play the game. Then by the time we got home I already knew the basics of the game and how to play. Not to mention some of the booklets had some decent back stories and lore thrown in, etc. Now you just get either nothing or just some pc code and an ad for some other game. I just got DAI and something like that would have had a nice sized book back in the day filled with story etc. One of the big criticisms on DAI was the idea that if you were new to the story you might not know who some of the people or factions were. Back in the day you never had that issue cause you had the book filled with it. Nowadays you have to pay top dollar for some extra package version to get any of that. Its kind of sad really.
I loved rogue squadron and shadows of the empire as a kid. They were so damn fun. It took me 2 whole days to know about the harpoon. Of course, the harpoons were in the movie, but the z button wouldn't activate the harpoon until you were super close. This was before most people had internet so you couldn't simply look it up. And I feel James for the Ewok Celebration music. Return of the Jedi is my favorite movie, so I learned the music on the piano when I was 10. Then I went to the 1997 special edition hit theaters. I was super excited to hear the soundtrack, especially the Ewok celebration. Nope. Changed it so pissed.
I couldn't read them, cause I couldn't understand English yet at the time, but I loved looking at the pictures and tried to deduce the story from them xP. I still have the manuals and boxes for my old games, except the N64 games that were also my brother's... He lost them or they got torn up.
I remember this game so well. It was the second game I owned for the N64 after Mario 64. It was extremely intense to me as a kid. I was so into it. I remember the Boba Fett fight really got me going especially.
I remember when I got this along with the n64 for my birthday in 97. It was all I asked for for months on end. We got it set up and my grandfather was like "does it look any better than your other system?" referring to the Sega genesis. When we turned it on he was amazed. Such fond memories of this game
Shadows of the Empire should really have been a movie. It's got a cool story, neat characters and one of the most realistic and three-dimensional stories in all of the Star Wars universe. There are no bad guys in it; you feel somewhat sorry for Xizor because his family was killed by Darth Vader, yet you know that Vader himself isn't pure evil and it shows multiple times in the story - he's a fallen hero fighting to retain his last senses of humanity. Dash Rendar is a badass, like Han Solo without a heart. It's just an all-round good idea and a neat concept - it's a shame it never became a film; heck, I think it could have outdone Return of the Jedi (which is, really, just a rehash of Star Wars; not saying it's bad, though!)...but instead, we got the prequel trilogy. Talk about a letdown.
Yeah. It's one of the only ships that I think out-badasses the Millennium Falcon. The StarVipers that fly for Xizor Transport Systems are pretty awesome as well.
Yeah. The Trilogy after the original should have been VII: Dark Forces, IIX: Shadows of the Empire, and IX: Jedi Knight. Does anybody even know those games anymore?
That AT-ST is no joke. I remember playing this game at launch and, up to this point, thinking that it was cake. NOPE. The lasers tear you to shreds if you're in front of the walker, and constantly repositioning to stay behind it (hit-and-flee) was a tough task-- especially using the blaster, which is weak. It's an epic battle, though, and you can feel your pulse getting faster as you're trying to beat this boss. One man against a walker? Dash Rendar was the Solid Snake of his time! (Minus the talking.) Can't wait for Part 2 next week!
Stay at the door to the giant room. When the AT-ST turns his back, unload on him. Hide behind the wall when he turns your way. You can tell by the audio of its movements if it's facing or turning. . . Makes the battle a lot quicker and easier. I don't know why other people didn't think to do this. XP
The worst boss was that giant mouth with tentacles in the sewers level. Scared me so much I actually cheated to skip this boss and proceed to next level.

One big reason Shadows of the Empire stands out to me is that it actually has a third major faction distinct from the rebels and Empire, giving a more complex conflict than the same old light vs dark 99% of Star Wars stories seem to be about in the end.
Very true, the idea of how a criminal organization would function in a galaxy as sprawling and diverse as the SW one is has limitless storytelling possibilities. I wish they would've done more with it, there's so much potential there.
I was going to write the same thing man this game was deep it showed me that there was more to the Star Wars World other than Darth Vader versus Luke Skywalker and the damn Ewoks also just gave it a much more grittier feel for the Star Wars universe more so than the movies ever did
Honestly it had one of the best side stories and spin off tales in the Star Wars Universe. The story in this game is really good enough to make a film with itself.
Nerd moment in coming. Lightsabers loop back on themselves they go up and then come back down, sort of how a solar flare does that big loop following the magnetic field of the Sun. Only a much tighter loop and they are so bright that you cannot see the two individual filaments of plasma. Bonus nerdy fact, this is why lightsabers last so long between charges they only expend energy as they slice through things. Just turning it on and leaving it on requires almost no power.
16:27 No. I think the light saber only adjusts to it's usual limit. There was a part in Empire Strikes Back when Luke was out in the freezing cold and then he got badly injured by a yeti. Han Solo came and rescued Luke and he used Luke's light saber to cut open the camel to stuff Luke inside it to keep him warm. I doubt any force power came into play because that yeti knocked Luke senseless. The whole time Luke was saying "Ben... Ben.... .... ...Ben."
there's star wars books that explain the lightsaber length. there's merely a adjustable screw/pin like thing that adjusts the blade length. it's all admitted through kyber crystals
Yes it has to do with Kyber crystals focusing the beam somehow? The iidea that its a tight arc not a beam makes the most sense in keeping it at a set length. Also other crystals can be used to color the blade. You can even have adjustable lengths and settings. ie. They can be set to more of a stun mode for training.
+Rift Shredder (TJbro9) Also, if you see the special edition of Star Wars A New Hope and watch the Mos Eisly scene, you can see the Outrider flying through the sky, I heard they did that on purpose because of the fact that they were wanting to tie Shadows of the Empire into the movies
The worst change in the special edition to me is the fucking Jabba's palace dance scene in Return of the Jedi, everytime it starts I just fucking skip it.
Agreed the music hell nothing needed to be changed. Why did we think the prequels would be so good after seeing what he went back and did to his best work?
The Thrawn Trilogy (Heir to the empire, Dark force rising and The last command) of books released from 1991 and up were essentially considered honorary episodes back in the day, so I never had issues with imagening post-ROTJ stories. I do worry that Abrams may not be able to outdo Zahn's visions of the future, but I'll keep an open mind.
Zahns books aren't considered canon and Zahns view of the future of SW went out when the Prequels came out. The trailer for Ep7 looks much better then anything in the Thrawn Trilogy
I bought this game of the stand & thought god it looks so cheap. Turned out to be fantastic & addictive. A true unsung treasure of the Star Wars universe.
This was one of the coolest Star wars games i ever played. After The Super Star wars trilogy on SNES i played it when i was 11.Such a treasure from my childhood.
I have a suggestion for you Mike, why don't you upload the edited version of the video and also provide the unedited version? That way the people who want to watch the whole thing can and the people who don't can watch the edited? Just a thought. =]
Oh man I must have powerslammed everyone with Kevin Nash about 1,000 times. Tried it once with a kid at school, he landed on his head but I think he's okay now.
Mike Matei, maybe consider publishing both versions: cut and extended. Wil Wheaton does this with some of his tabletop episodes, and personally I love watching the extended versions.
I saw this game back in the day at a friend's house and it utterly blew my mind. But looking at it now, with those smeared, muddy textures, it's hard to believe I genuinely felt this looked as close to the reality of a Star Wars movie as I did. The graphics have not aged well. Still, it was the game that convinced me to buy an N64 over the PS or the Saturn.
Turrican4D My PC at the time wasn't anything special. Just an ex-display bottom of the line P90 that my dad bought for work and the Internet. I don't think this game needs the expansion pack. You might be thinking of the later Rogue Squadron, which is a better game anyway, imho (Didn't really like the awkward third person sections. Why they put a third person mode in Rogue Squadron III, I'll never know).
When my cousin would rent or buy a new game, he would always make me read the instruction manual while he played the game. When it got time for me to play, he'd turn the game off and say he'd want to watch TV.
hearing two fans of starwars who aren't well versed in the lore is actually kind of refreshing. It brings things back to a simpler time, like when I was young, as opposed to having read so much star wars that I know all the answers to every question they'd ever ask .-.
OMG!!!! My mom rented this for me when I was a child. Constantly think of this game when people talk of good Star Wars games but I never knew what it was called. Yes!
Good episode, learned a lot about Star Wars! And omg the boss battle...good thing games on PC use a mouse to aim...was horrible to aim with a controller.
Cinemassacre Gotta love when you look at your subscription box right before you go to sleep and you see a Cinemassacre vid. Its like the only channel that uploads at this time lol
This game was so fucking expensive when it came out. I remember some stores selling it for $120 during Christmas of '96. It was one of the few decent games on the N64 at the time, so nobody gave a shit how expensive it was.
Yeah, Yub Nub was a bit corny but I loved it as a kid. I also loved the contrast of the ewok song and the ending theme. It made the end title all the more epic.
Yeah, the Ewok song was like my favorite song in all the movies. Didn't they also change the song in Jabba's Palace, or was it just expanded? Been a while since I've watched it - usually just watch the laserdisc version
The controls are bullshit, but you CAN strafe and aim at the back of the AT-ST nearly constantly, instead of walking 4 steps, aiming, shooting 3 times, and repeating. There's also ways to sprint and jump, James.
@@Markell1991 I thought something similar I always looked at it as basically being all in the kyber crystal which power the sabers. As they are force attuned. So I just figured the length of it is due to that. Basically the Crystal added with the hilt puts out a certain amount of energy which makes it so the lightsaber blade only goes to a certain length. Kind of make sense to me when you think of the fact that Kylo's saber has a cracked Kyber Crystal in it which is why it looks different compared to it just being a straight beam of light it instead looks different like the beam of light is crackling.
Those Yeti's used to freak the hell out of me when I was like 3-4 years old playing this at my babysitters house lol When I was 3 or 4 years old, I got to the level where you are on a train and have to jump between platforms, and I remember being afraid of some guy with a jetpack.
Ugh... guys, you claim to be such Star Wars fans but you don't even have a grasp of the basics! Lightsabers aren't lasers. They use super-heated plasma contained within a sort of force field to give them their shape. Second, using lightsabers does not require the use of the Force, aside from certain lightsabers that had internal switches that could only be reached by using the Force. We know this because General Grievous used lightsabers in combat and he was not a Force user. If you don't want to use the prequels as an example of a non-Force user using a lightsaber then you can turn to Empire Strikes Back when Han Solo uses Luke's lightsaber to cut open his Tauntaun.
I've even heard theories that it might be possible to create a plasma blade (ie Lightsaber) using a loop of plasma held within a strong elongated magnetic field.
In the books it has been hinted that Solo is a person that can use the force he just chose to ignore it. So the case of him using Luke's lightsaber may not count.
Michał Skup I also enjoyed Outcast. My favorite Star Wars game? That's a hard one. I loved Jedi Academy, Rouge Squadron series, Shadows of the Empire; each game provides something different, so I can't come up with a favorite.
I had this game many, many years ago. I had my friend over and he was playing it and watching you fight the AT-ST reminded me of this. His strategy was, and I kid you not, running behind it and shooting what you would consider its "ankles". It must've taken him an hour and a half, but he beat it.
Lucas was *clearly* making it up as he went along. Isn't there that scene in the making-of featurette for one of the prequels where the movie's already in production, but he admits that he hasn't even finished the script for it?
I'm glad I'm not the only person who felt the need to tweak the brightness up for this game... ...also, that sewer boss is really scary.... One of the few things that actually had me scared to play as a kid...

How far off are the James & Mike Mondays which are/will be shot in the new location?
New location?
Joe is giving us hints of the future!
captainnutella67 I hope you are right! Joe and Dave (Game Sack) are my favorite gaming TH-cam channel right now. ☺
Is*
Billy Disaster Mine too! :D
I really liked every star wars game I played on n64.granted, it was only two: rogue squadron and episode 1 racer but they were the mutts nuts.
The worst change in the special edition to me is the fucking Jabba's palace dance scene in Return of the Jedi, everytime it starts I just fucking skip it.
Fucking yes. That was unbearable and really awkward to watch.
Agreed the music hell nothing needed to be changed. Why did we think the prequels would be so good after seeing what he went back and did to his best work?
I liked the new song that they added at the end of Jedi. I thought it was better, it felt more epic and it always makes me cry
When I was I kid, I'd always read the instructions on the drive home because I was so hyped to play the game I just got.
Zahn's books will always be the true continuation of this story and The Force Awakens will be some alternate universe in my opinion.
Man, Those books were so great,
Zahns books aren't considered canon and Zahns view of the future of SW went out when the Prequels came out.
The trailer for Ep7 looks much better then anything in the Thrawn Trilogy
Play Goldeneye
^This^
GRANT Evans When? I thought they only played nightfire
GRANT Evans What other goldeneye is there?
no they should play conkers bad fur day
Mike should play Goldmember
I used to love using the tow cables in the original Battlefront on PS2 lol
I bought this game of the stand & thought god it looks so cheap.
Turned out to be fantastic & addictive. A true unsung treasure of the Star Wars universe.
Got this with my N64 and immediately took it with my family on vacation. The graphics blew everyone’s minds.
I actually have the book of shadows of the empire. It's really good.
Same here. I've read it a couple times but it's been almost 20 years since the last time I read through it
Nerd haha jk I’ll probably read it now lol
It was so good
I actually liked instruction books when they were written as actual pieces of the game's universe.
This was one of the coolest Star wars games i ever played. After The Super Star wars trilogy on SNES i played it when i was 11.Such a treasure from my childhood.
agreed i love that game so much
I would watch 4 hours of you guys sitting on a couch playing a game. It is a great bonus material for your Blurays!
The music was amazing in this game. I still get goosebumps from the title screen music.
I have a suggestion for you Mike, why don't you upload the edited version of the video and also provide the unedited version? That way the people who want to watch the whole thing can and the people who don't can watch the edited? Just a thought. =]
Wait, you aren't Mike!
JAMES! MIKE! PLEASE DO THIS!!! ^w^
I was thinking the same thing.
"Directors cut"
That's the thing I thought, good sir.
One of these days I'll watch them play General Chaos on Sega! Maybe even Comix Zone!
+Cinemassacre - you know what would be great? A 4 co-op of WCW/NWO Revenge on N64 :) That would be awesome!
Now that was a game, best wrestling game in my opinion.
Oh man I must have powerslammed everyone with Kevin Nash about 1,000 times. Tried it once with a kid at school, he landed on his head but I think he's okay now.
Mike 'blow up the boxes - get some health' Matei
Oh man i wish they did the three hour full unedited version of this😢
Mike Matei, maybe consider publishing both versions: cut and extended. Wil Wheaton does this with some of his tabletop episodes, and personally I love watching the extended versions.
There would be a lot of spans of time where we're just playing the game, with no commentary. It would be boring and pointless.
-Mike
Well at least he mentioned both of your comments in Part 2, your voices has been heard!
Pretty much all games of this era were like this. Sprites are a lot more timeless.
The pc version looks much better.
cygil1 Don't all?
Scout Moser you're like the baseball kid that grows up to be a villain in meet the robinsons
Dude your cousin was an ass
And how did that make you feel?!? Lol!!
@@eightyblox6829 goob
Bastard
hearing two fans of starwars who aren't well versed in the lore is actually kind of refreshing. It brings things back to a simpler time, like when I was young, as opposed to having read so much star wars that I know all the answers to every question they'd ever ask .-.
N64 had some great Star Wars titles! I use to love that stage with the speeder bikes!
Their accents really come out when they're excited.
for some reason this video always reminds me of thanksgiving.
John Mark Aiken Strange. Now that you mention it, I'm kinda getting that feeling from it too!
Loved this game. I'm going to play it tonight!
Yes! Shadows of the Empire! One of my most favorite games ever! Awesome video!
OMG!!!! My mom rented this for me when I was a child. Constantly think of this game when people talk of good Star Wars games but I never knew what it was called. Yes!
I recently started replaying this game. I forgot how fucking good it is.
Omg! I found Hank Hill! XD
stoodle bop Agreed
stoodle bop it’s amazing
stoodle bop really I remember it being trash rouge squadron was good I recall
Good episode, learned a lot about Star Wars! And omg the boss battle...good thing games on PC use a mouse to aim...was horrible to aim with a controller.
Thanks! More Star Wars geeky-ness coming next week! -Mike
Cinemassacre
Gotta love when you look at your subscription box right before you go to sleep and you see a Cinemassacre vid. Its like the only channel that uploads at this time lol
lol i beat jedi knight dark forces 2 using only the keyboard to aim and shoot...
This game just looks like a crappy version of star fox if you ask me X_X
Brekner Catalin I could do straight headshots on Goldeneye 007 with the aim assists turned off.
This game was so fucking expensive when it came out. I remember some stores selling it for $120 during Christmas of '96. It was one of the few decent games on the N64 at the time, so nobody gave a shit how expensive it was.
TRUE
I've always owned this game parents probably rented it and never returned it lol
I remember the opening levels of this game so well, there are so many power ups in that room you could have gotten...
I had so much fun with this game. That speeder level through Mos Eisley was brutal.
So glad I'm not the only one who hates the special edition music at the end of Return Of The Jedi
Where did you learn to tow the cable?
just when i thought you guys were the real-life bevis and butthead i notice the ac/dc shirt.
😀😁😂
The nostalgia of seen this cartridge is totally overwelming ❤️
2:12 - Missions 1-3 take place during Empire strikes back, missions 4-10 take place in between TESB & ROTJ.
Q: How dose the light saber work? How dose the beam stop?
A: Space Opera.
I call them R and L but with the inclusion of the 360 controller, the triggers are Right and left Trigger.
This game WAS considered canon until Disney bought Star Wars and erased Star Wars canon as we knew it.
Thanks a lot, Disney.
Looking at where we are today...
Loved this game...there is a ridiculous cheat code that you almost need two people to perform, tough game on highest difficulty
The Cinemassacre guys know Stingray?! They've just earned a new respect from me!
The controls are bullshit, but you CAN strafe and aim at the back of the AT-ST nearly constantly, instead of walking 4 steps, aiming, shooting 3 times, and repeating. There's also ways to sprint and jump, James.
Han used Luke's lightsaber when luke was almost unconscious. I don't think it's the force, just "it's not a real thing" haha
+David Ford I always thought it was like magnets. They work, but only at a certain distance. Same with the machinery in the hilt of a lightsaber.
What a disappointment the Disney Star Wars were. I agree, "Return of the Jedi" is the end of Star Wars.
16:20 han solo uses a light saber and it stops
This one still remains one of my top 5 favorite N64 games.
James can relate to George Lucas through his Snix movies? Wow.
"Gredo shot *preemptively* " maybe?
use the fucking strafe button
one of the best, if not the best, J & M monday
Those Yeti's used to freak the hell out of me when I was like 3-4 years old playing this at my babysitters house lol
When I was 3 or 4 years old, I got to the level where you are on a train and have to jump between platforms, and I remember being afraid of some guy with a jetpack.
Victory celebration > yub nub
All the way.
Special edition final music better than original one on so many levels.
Ugh... guys, you claim to be such Star Wars fans but you don't even have a grasp of the basics!
***** Precisely. I remembered that immediately after posting and edited it in.
***** Agreed :)
I've even heard theories that it might be possible to create a plasma blade (ie Lightsaber) using a loop of plasma held within a strong elongated magnetic field.
SparcMan I can only hope! :D
In the books it has been hinted that Solo is a person that can use the force he just chose to ignore it. So the case of him using Luke's lightsaber may not count.
Best star wars game is, hands down, Jedi Outcast.
An amazing game, yes, but not the best :P
KOTOR for the xbox I think is the best.
Matthew J. Boone matter of taste - I love Outcast, but I'm curious - what game you consider to be the best?
Michał Skup I also enjoyed Outcast. My favorite Star Wars game? That's a hard one. I loved Jedi Academy, Rouge Squadron series, Shadows of the Empire; each game provides something different, so I can't come up with a favorite.
I dunno about Jedi Academy - good mechanics but story was weaker than in Outcast. But RS is just mind blowing.
I had this game many, many years ago. I had my friend over and he was playing it and watching you fight the AT-ST reminded me of this. His strategy was, and I kid you not, running behind it and shooting what you would consider its "ankles". It must've taken him an hour and a half, but he beat it.
shadows of the empire hands down one of the best n64 games. that and the pod racers game that was also badass
Lucas was *clearly* making it up as he went along. Isn't there that scene in the making-of featurette for one of the prequels where the movie's already in production, but he admits that he hasn't even finished the script for it?
Listening to James’ thoughts on the unneeded Disney trilogy we got that ruins the ending of RotJ makes me smile.
I've been alive for 19 years and I STILL CAN'T FUCKING DO THAT TOW CABLE BULLSHIT
how old are you?
I'm glad I'm not the only person who felt the need to tweak the brightness up for this game...
...also, that sewer boss is really scary.... One of the few things that actually had me scared to play as a kid...
I missed the James and Mike’s Mondays😢
