Alaska is the largest state in the U.S. by land area, covering over 663,000 square miles. It's located in the far northwest of North America and is bordered by Canada to the east, the Arctic Ocean to the north, and the Pacific Ocean to the south and west.
Alaska was purchased from Russia in 1867 for $7.2 million, which was about two
cents per acre. It became the 49th state of the U.S. on January 3, 1959.
