Exploring the Charming Town of Chioggia: Rich History, Vibrant Culture, and Local Delights

  • Chioggia is a small town located in the Veneto region of northern Italy. It is situated on a small island in the southern lagoon of the Venice metropolitan area. Chioggia is often referred to as "Little Venice" due to its similar canals and bridges. The town has a population of around 50,000 people and is known for its fishing industry, particularly for its production of anchovies. Chioggia also has a charming historic center with narrow streets, historic buildings, and a main square called Piazza Vigo. It is a popular tourist destination, offering a more peaceful and less crowded alternative to Venice, as well as access to nearby beaches and waterways.
    On our tour of Chioggia we visit the 18th century Church of San Domenico set on its own island, to see Carpaccio’s St Paul, his last recorded painting and other works of art by Tintoretto and Bassano. We also admire the Piazzetta Vigo and visit the colourful fish market. There will also be the opportunity to enjoy a short tour of Chioggia’s pretty canals in a traditional locally built boat, before re-joining La Bella Vita.
    We walk through the streets of Chioggia's historic center, known as the "Little Venice." As we explore the narrow alleyways and picturesque canals, you will notice the strong Byzantine influence in the architecture and layout of the town. Chioggia was an important outpost of the Byzantine Empire, and its strategic location played a vital role in the defense of the Venetian Republic.
    We also will visit the Church of San Domenico, another historical gem that showcases Chioggia's Roman and Byzantine past. This church dates back to the 14th century and is famous for its impressive bell tower, which offers commanding views of the town and the lagoon.
    No visit to Chioggia would be complete without exploring the town's bustling fish market, a tradition that has been ongoing for centuries. The vibrant market is a testament to Chioggia's historical reliance on fishing and trade, and you can witness the local fishermen selling their fresh catches of the day.
