One thing I don't mention too much in this vid is the poor quality autofocus. You'll have focus manually, a pain sometimes, but consider it part of its charm 🤗
I'm ready to step down into a GH5. Back in 2018 I stepped up from a GH4 into a Blackmagic Pocket 4K. It's a beast. That BRAW image is 100% gold. The interface is heaven. But I miss everything else about the GH4; battery life, articulating screen, autofocus, size, weight, audio limiter and compressor, smaller files. The GH5 has all of that plus IBIS and 10bit colour and 4K @ 50/60fps. I leapfrogged too far. I had to buy a cage, top handle, bigger external batteries, brighter external monitor, beefier gimbal to carry all that shit. Now my back hurts. I shoulda got a GH5. EDIT: IT'S 2024 AND I JUST GOT ONE!
Great video man, I am actually in the process of making a GH5 video on my own channel and you really capture why this timeless camera still rocks! Subbed and looking forward to more 👍
Just bought one a few months back and after watching a million TH-cam videos on its features , and learning about its features I’ll say it’s hands down a BEAST with so many features… I’ve been a professional video editor for the last 40years and now shooting my own stuff with this and LOVE it so much , good video here ..,well done
I would agree, the only real issue I have with the s5 is you're going to spend more on lenses. Vintage lenses are great on the GH5 or any MFT lenses are pretty cheap vs full frame glass. That being said, I think about buying an S5II just about every day.
I got my first G85 camera for super cheap. Learned a lot from this system, exposure, white balance and most importantly manual focusing. Now I have an S5iix, the features on this thing are overwhelming lol
@@toadmuscle5084 I would think about what kind of lens to buy... there is not much for the Leica L bayonet... should I use adapters and old lenses on such an expensive machine??
I have a GH5s and a GH52 I have to give 1 to my Son bc I accidentally ran over the Gh4 I gave him. I love using these cameras bc I’ve learned everything I know from using them. I just bought a Gh7 to replace one of my GH5’s
@@toadmuscle5084 I like both but lately GH52 has been My go to for run and gun. I'm undecided which one to give My son. I'm thinking the GH5s bc the bigger sensor and I still have my speedbooster.
I have a GH4, bought it dirt cheap, it had older firmware on it, so i did upgrade to 2.3 firmware and now i can shoot video with V-log-L with the android app bug for free...🤣
I agree with everything that you said but I sold my two GH5s. I have been filming live theatre for almost 30 years. I have used a variety of cameras over the years; I have been using GH5s in the past few years. Now I have two GH5 Mk2s and one GH6. The biggest reason that I switched to the Mk2s is that they, like the GH6 can be powered by USB. The GH5s have to be powered (in my situation) with a USB and a dummy battery. This is a more clumsy solution and if the cable gets disconnected the recording stops. Now the set up for each camera is identical. Each uses the same USB battery type to power the camera and each has a Ninja V that is powered by a D Tap battery. Each camera also records a back up of the footage internally. I have a collection of MFT lenses so that I can record in small and large venues.
@@toadmuscle5084 I really like the GH6. It’s a little power hungry and because I shoot for long periods of time, I use the USB-C for power delivery. I use a Ninja V for recording 4K, but I also record to my 2TB CF Express card. On this card I record 5.7K ProRes. This gives me a backup and I can punch in if I like.
GH5 & GH5S are still great cameras for me since 2019. But do not use the kit lenses, the secret to better image quality is in using the best lenses. Invest in that way. When I started using M43 was with Olympus and bought Panaleica lenses in 2014, I still have them and keep using them. Still a great camera and that’s true, it has features that Sony doesn’t has. I also own some Sony gear. And don’t want to let go the Lumix system.
If you'd discussed exactly what features you're missing on the FX30, this video would have been helpful. I don't have both (I'm on a G7), so I don't know what you're talking about. Love how the _video_ looks though. Too good, too good.
@@toadmuscle5084 It has certainly fewer video specs, but you get amazing color straight out of the camera, the ergonomics and ruggedness is on par with Canon 1DC/1DX mark ii , 120fps slo mo (without audio- that’s a bummer…), fast motion, free om-log, 5-7 stabilization stops, focus peaking, 0,8 magnification EVF (an evf all have criticized- how about an optical evf where you get 0 focus aid!? For real…). The photography focus of this camera actually works really well for video purposes. I will try to make a short movie filmed exclusively on the Olly.
I think so! The poor autofocus won’t affect a studio setting with fixed focus and there’s no recording limit. I’ve never done anything over 30 minutes, but should be fine as long as it doesnt overheat.
I wouldn’t say equivalent. I like the colorspace of my Sony camera a little more, but I’m always surprised how good the Vlog footage looks. Usually just takes a little more work to get the colors right, where as slog3 is usually ready to go with a few minor tweaks.
Hey buddy, I’m staring real estate videography business and looking for beginner or intermediate camera. Found couple good deals on GH5 & GH5s. But people are saving it is not good with auto focus do you recommend this camera for real estate cinematic videos?
Honestly, it's hard to say. The not good auto focus is the one downside to the GH5, but I'm not sure how important that would be with real estate videography. I have a friend in the business that was using a gh5 two years ago, so it's definitely possible. I say give it a shot, and if you feel like you need to upgrade then you can sell the GH5 and get a Sony ZV-E10 ii, a6700, or a Lumix S5 II.
Just to add cause this camera is steal, invest your money into good lidar such as pdmovie smart 3 or dji focus pro, pair it with great budget cine lens such as, mitakon, sirui, 7artisans, meike.... trust me, it will paid off..
If you can find a good deal on lidar, then definitely worth it. And having gear like that works for other cameras down the line. If you outgrow the GH5, you can get a BS1h or something and have a full blown cinema rig pretty easy.
One thing I don't mention too much in this vid is the poor quality autofocus. You'll have focus manually, a pain sometimes, but consider it part of its charm 🤗
Almost 8 years later and GH5 still being talked about tells you how much of a legendary this camera still is.
Can’t believe it’s been 8 years. Honestly just feels like an honor to be part of the lore
