    Thank you for this info dump! I never knew Nanouks were succulents (never read that anywhere, and believe me I've read loads of articles!), and wondered, why it was so hard to keep them alive! This is great!

    Great info! (I especially appreciated the point about random generic plant terms like “evenly moist” being applied broadly, even to plants which don’t want that. It’s like how everyone recomends a 10/10/10 fertilezer for *everything*).

    Awesome, Jeff! I was unaware of these as tradescantias (duh); I have three perennial versions, one of which is native here in Missouri. I love these! I have had the most common versions, cuttings given by friends mostly, one I continue to grow in a teacup on the window sill above my sink, periodically pinching off any mushy stems, changing the water, etc..
    One of the many things I love about horticulture - there is always more to learn!

    Hi Jeff, loved seeing these plants again, a plant that is often forgotten with all the other plants available. I grew up with wondering dew growing in rockeries in the full African Sun! Plants are a bit limited at the moment, but once I am able to go look at plants will put this on my list. Thanks for the very informative and great video. Hope you well and all your pets are healthy and enjoying the sunny weather! 😁🐾☀️🌈🇬🇧

    Pacific Northwest Oregon Coast here....I had one in the house, plain green, grew long and lush, from ceiling to floor, but started taking up too much room. Took cuttings off it and chucked the mother plant next to the house by the driveway in a shady spot. It took off there all summer and I totally expected it to freeze....nope 7 years later its very healthy ground cover and up the wall 3 feet....looks better growing free than it ever did in the house. Who knew? Thank you Jeff.

      Hey Lorell! Y'all up there in the PNW have such great gardens. I can imagine it would grow well for you. I know the pallida volunteers around my yard and garden beds in spring time from clippings from the previous year and im a full zone north of where they are considered hardy. There are actually some beaitiful perennial varieties for my area, i should give them a try. I was thinking about you this morning bc I was looking at pics of my old lotus vines and remembering how beautiful the lotus vines were that I used to see up in Seattle. I know you're in Oregon area, but wondered if you grow them there? They are some of my favorite plants but they don't flower well or even at all down here with the heat.

    Thank you Jeff. What a wonderful surprise seeing you twice already this week! 💚🙃 I guess I didn’t realize that these were succulents. I guess that’s why the teeny tiny one I forgot to water for about two weeks is still alive, barely. I finally got a shade cloth up on my deck and I’m moving the plants out. I’m sure they’re going to be much happier outside because I had to turn the air on and there’s so much more humidity outside and warmth. Now for them to start putting on growth to make mama happy💚🙃 I love those chipped looking blue pots❤️❤️❤️❤️💚🙃

      Hello Judy! They are very forgiving plants and yes, they grow much more when outside. Aren't those pots cute? I got the pitcher years ago from a store called, Home Goods and drilled a hole in it. The cup I found this past winter at a nursery. Crazy to me that i found one made for home use and one that matches made for plants. Weird right?

    Thank you so much!! Water propagation didn't work out so well. I am very excited to care for mine now. It is in a small pot and the stems are getting very long and want to lay down and hang. The are very thick. Is that okay to just let them grow and try to hang? I am afraid they will snap. I did hear that they like to search for soil to root and get stronger. I have mine up high on an entertainment center for my mom and she loves looking up and seeing the radiant color. Especially when the sun hits it. So beautiful. Thank you again for all your help.

    Hey man, love your videos! I’ve had the zebrina for a couple years now and it has been probably one of the most asked for when folks want cuttings from my collection. I have a ton of confidence in these plants. In fact, my daughter has a very pink & purple room so she wanted one in her window. She put it next to her watch chain crassula in a very hot southern facing window. After a few months the zebrina turned out the brightest pinks and purples I’ve ever seen! Like hot magenta!! The crassula shriveled to bits though. (Hey she was only 5 at the time.) Also I just picked up a more tender leafed one that’s more light lavender and white. I usually don’t go for variegated leaves. I’ve been collecting & enjoying plants since I was 20. So 20 years later I’m like “been there done that bought the tshirt”. I only want plants that will be rewarding and I don’t have to babysit their humidity. Thanks for the smiles, gorgeous foliage and any tips for my new find. ✌️

  • @GrowingSouth
    @GrowingSouth 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have Nanouk, zebrina, and pallida all. The Pallida is in the landscaping and seeds profusely. I end up having baby plants popping up all over the place. It also needs to be pinched back weekly here. The zebrina I use a lot in hanging baskets, and tends to be fragile and slower growing (though not slow in general) than the other 2 species. The Nanouk is outside as well, and just as fast growing as the pallida here.

    • @TropicalPlantParty
      @TropicalPlantParty  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can imagine the pallida would volunteer all over the place in places where they are perennials since here they also pop all over the place. They even show up in springtime from the ones planted the prior the year. ... usually from seeding but sometimes from fallen pieces that rooted wherever they fell behind other plants the year before.

    Thanks for the video! I am just getting used to growing these... I have a Tradescantia chrysophylla (Baby Bunny Bellies). I didn't know they were succulents so that will help me care for them better :) I'm really starting to love these plants, but the care isn't what I thought... I think what you said is more on target. I'm getting into propagating the way you explained by just laying the potted tendril into another pot. I'm doing it with string of pearls, episcia and this one, it's fun and easier i think. Well, thanks so much- have a great day ;)

    • @wjjackson0311
      @wjjackson0311 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Saw no reply here but you would have to try and kill it. You can literally cut some leaves to the stem and you’ll be fine! I had a 5inch piece break off so I tore the lower leaves off and it still rooted.

    • @tucsonconnie6864
      @tucsonconnie6864 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@wjjackson0311 Yep. You can usually just snap a length off, but yes - remove any lower leaves before putting the stem into soil (or water!) It'll root in no time. I won't put pieces from it into the compost or eventually it would take over everything!

    Hi Jeff! I found a couple of very short pieces of the Tradescantia Zebrina on the floor and brought them home and put them in water and they have turned a dark pink. It took them a while to this, but I was surprised. I think I have the Nanouk. It looked a lot like yours, but it has gotten so leggy that I'm considering getting rid of it, but now may try propagating it and keeping it smaller. It's in the brightest area, but not in direct sunlight. Do you think it might be getting too much light? It was so pretty when I first got it. I, also, didn't realize it is a succulent. I don't have good luck with succulents. Just curious if the snake plants you have planted with them require the same watering, or will you need to separate them later on? They look so pretty together! I love the pots you have them in, too! Great choices! Thank you so much for sharing!

    • @TropicalPlantParty
      @TropicalPlantParty  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Sandy! It's leggy but in the brightest area? Usually having a lot of light keeps them from being leggy. Maybe try giving it more light if possible. They like more water than regular succulents, so don't worry about the succulent part. When they get leggy, giving the plant a heavy pruning usually helps because it encourages them to put out more growth from inside of the plant. The snake plants will not want as much water as the tradescantia during winter. So ill probably separate them in the fall. I really shouldn't have even put them in those pots, they'll need to be pruned all of the time, but i wanted them nearby and those pots go around the umbrella pole on my table. ...so I did it anyway. 😁

  • @135Bubby
    @135Bubby 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Your plants have more silver/white than the kind I grow. I grow them all the time. I take cuttings in Fall, letting the actual rooted plant die. I keep the cuttings growing in water inside most of the Winter. Then in Springish I pot them up and then outside in warm weather. Then in Fall, I start all over again. Kansas, 6a.

    • @TropicalPlantParty
      @TropicalPlantParty  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Jan! I used to the same with my Zebrina, just much easier than fussing over them in the winter. A few years i even just cut all of the growth out the basket in fall and stored it with my bulbs on a shelf in my garage. When spring came around they would come back just fine once I gave them light and resumed watering.

    • @135Bubby
      @135Bubby 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TropicalPlantParty That's amazing! I keep mine in water during the winter. Some do ok, some die. But enough live that I don't need to buy any, come Spring. I think you could grow a stick and it would come back alive, you have such a green thumb!

    should I put them in my morning sun Window East Facing or afternoon/west facing
    Should I worry or get grow lights if we have a long winter that’s mostly rainy with no sun ?

    My zebrinas, which I keep indoors, seem healthy enough, though they could benefit from more natural light (we have had very little sun since March). I'm getting new leaves but they're small & tend to curl. Propagated cuttings are doing quite poorly, & I'm running out of ideas. I keep hoping this is a seasonal issue though I don’t know how I'll get them through the winter 😕

    I don't know what I'm doing wrong I have purchased nanooks and have plenty of past experience with tradescantia, I followed all the pass rules, and my nanooks keep damping off despite the fact that I'm watering them very lightly?

    • @TropicalPlantParty
      @TropicalPlantParty  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's odd. The only difference I can think of that would make a difference would be lighting because of the variegation, but the zebrina is variegated also, so if that's done well for you then I don't know what would be making the difference.

    I'm in central Pennsylvania trying to winter over my transcantia plants. I have them in an East window and they seem to get really leggy do they need more light? I've successfully rooted cuttings in water many times but would like the plants themselves to become bushier (as you say 😋)
    Suggestions?

    Great video!
    I have received some Wandering Jew Tricolour clippings. However 2 out of 3 clippings are baring all green leaves.
    Is it possible they will bare variegated again after rooting and proper care? Or will I have to patiently wait for my tiny (properly) variegated clipping to grow, and propagate more? Thank you very much for your time.

    they're weedy here. A friend of mine had one that was just about dead and threw what was left out behind his shed. A few months later it had carpeted the ground behind the shed and was growing up the fence. They're pretty, but definitely not something you want in the ground here. (kind of like the damn Rhoeo)

    • @TropicalPlantParty
      @TropicalPlantParty  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love that our coveted houseplants are your weeds! I can imagine they would be really invasive. The pallidas show up in my garden beds in the spring from seeds and dropped clippings in springtime and im a full zone north of their hardiness. Didn't I see rhoeo in the background of the crinum pic on instagram?
