- Growing up my grandparents called it the wandering jew, and so did my parents. Fortunately a group of people got together to try and come up with a slightly less offensive name. What ever you call this plant make sure you watch the entire video so you know how to best care for your plant! Plant Prudently!

I read a Comment on fb made by a woman of Jewish ancestry that said that from her Grandmother, the name Wandering Jew comes from it representing the exodus from egypt and the tribes 'wandering' through the desert. She stated that the name is not anti semitic or disrespectful.
There are a lot of theories out there as to how this name came about. I think you are probably right, however just to be sure I'm gonna say, dude. I don't want to accidentally upset someone over a plant lol. Though it wouldn't be the first time.
Evidently the name is offending to the ultra sensitive. Too bad it's real meaning has to be abolished. The plant is beautiful. It will always be a beautiful plant and one of my favorites.
I do appreciate all the good information.
I always ask those that try to censor me "so what word do you take issue with? Wandering? Or Jew?"
It's so beautiful! I just bought one and I call it Wandering Jewel💓
Me too!
I don’t think wondering Jew is a hatful name, I embrace the name and enjoy it’s beauty.❤️
Thanks for the info. I love how the cat is chilling. 😹
Your plant is absolutely gorgeous! I just got one today. I fell in love with it at the nursery. I named it Jewel. I never even thought about the name Jew as offensive. Thank you, @dollhollidae1972, for clarifying the real reason for the name. The constant pruning seems like a lot of work, especially since I have so many plants with different needs, and I am still a newbie, nowhere far from having a green thumb. But I love gardening. I found it to be so peaceful and enjoyable. I guess everyone will be one or two of these for special occasions. Thanks for being so informative!
I would love to see you demonstrate how you pinch off the leaves and stuff for pruning. I’m a Newbie and I’m having a hard time visualizing what you mean.
Thank you for that idea. I can't believe I didn't think to do a video on that! I'll try and work it in soon! But to hold you until I do, if you pinch any plant back you generally want to pinch back about an inch or so below the tip of the stems/shoots.
I just picked a neglected dude up at a big box store yesterday. I had never seen one before and it was too beautiful to pass by. The store didn't have a species name and the care labels were missing so I was a bit surprised by the common name coming up during the Google search. I loved your modern take on the name and your video! I know how to give this new plant the proper love.
Good score! Yes, these are great plants to have. I love their beautiful, calming patterns and colors. Just remember the most bright yet indirect light you can provide is ideal. Watch your watering with this one and if it starts to get leggy prune back fairly liberally. Thanks for watching and plant prudently!
The plants amazing man, it's like seeing something out of a fantasy movie, but real!!!
Thank you! I love his colors, and his fractal patterns! Such a cool plant. A little toxic though, but what can you do? lol.
@@TheGreenAlchemist lol😂
So educational. I was wondering about the name change and you went over it right at the beginning
Thank you!!
Love this plant~ tried to get a cutting from a friend but didn't happen. I bought a small one and WOW, this plant grows like nobodies business! I have already taken cuttings and I haven't had it for even 3 months. Such a gorgeous plant.
Your really good at explaining things ty
I just moved mine into a brighter light spot & it's really loving it, although the leaves are looking a little splotchy- not sure if it's regaining color from when it was in a dimmer light spot? I have a couple different pots in different areas to see who does best lol. Also I love your lil cat hanging out with you ❤
I will always consider this plant wandering jew
Great video. Really informative - thanks. Your cat is gorgeous :)
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Yeah he's a silver fox, super old but still super cute! 🌺
The Green Alchemist he reminds me of ours. She’s all black and about 20 and also super-cute. I didn’t realise you could use isopropyl alcohol for bugs. Great tip :)
Okay but what the beautiful pink flowering plant 😍😍😍 also thank you I definitely sun burn my dude so this helps a lot moved it out of direct sunlight
That plant is just gorgeous.
Thank you! Stunning plants for real! 🌲
I have a small tradescentia nanouk that I got a few weeks ago. It has more pink and pastel leaves and is a little more sturdy, not viney like the Zebrina, so not really for hanging pots. Your Zebrina is beautiful and HUGE. I wonder if mine could grow that big.
Gorgeous plant!! How long did it take you to get it that size? Mine is so small and I've lost 2 in the past, but I love it so much I keep trying!! Thanks for sharing your knowledge!!
Thank you. Normally it takes a couple years to get to this point but avid pruning and pinching back the leggy growths helps it get there much quicker. Doing so makes the plant send out two shoots which will make it more bushy. I've had one for about 6 years or 7 years.
I was thinking of getting this for my BFF since she’s Jewish and we have a weird sense of humor.
Do you have a video on Persian shield? Can’t find much for helpful videos on here with that one.
Lol, that's funny. Unfortunately, I do not have a video on those yet. I need to but I haven't gotten around to it. Eventually, I want to do a video on the Persian shield and then also the purple velvet plant.
Great job Justin 👍
Glad you liked it! Means a lot. Hug Goldilocks for me! 🌺
That's a fine looking example.
I love this beauty! His colors are something else!! Plant Prudently!
Just recieved some cuttings cant wait for the rootsto start
Aw that's too cool! I hope yours gets as big as mine real soon! 🌲
Leafeon is my favorite eeveelution! 😇 I have like ten plushies hahaha
I know what you mean! I have several plushies and perler beads artwork of him, well him and vaporeon. I love them both! 🌺
Thank you for calling it "The Wandering Dude." :)
:)
Wow wow wow you are very knowledgeable and your plants are beautiful
Thank you, that means a lot! I hope you enjoy my channel! Plant Prudently!
I had one of these as a kid.
Wandering Jew
"Growing up my grandparents called it the wandering jew, and so did my parents. Fortunately a group of people got together to try and come up with a slightly less offensive name."
Why are these people who try to make things less offensive always so stupid? Why didn't they call it Wandering Jewel instead???
Such a beautiful plant.
Thank you! It's gorgeous. I love the purple and green in the natural light! Stunning!
Any plant lover know what the plant on the table that is behind the pink flowing plant is can you tell me? As a newbie it remind a of a ficus (the leaves) and I just love ficus but never seen one so cute and small.
I knew this plant as tradeskanzia.
Until I joined some fb groups I never knew people called it the wandering j*w. I always thought it wandering jewel since it has jewel tone colors
It makes more sense too, doesn't it? At first, I was like...I think you're saying that wrong. Consequently, you might be antisemitic. lol
The name Wandering Jew is a Biblical reference to the 40 years the Jewish people wandered in the desert and is called that because it is such a prolific wanderer. It isn't in any way anti-Semitic. A beautiful plant and a beautiful people.
Beautiful
Thank you. It's one of my favorite plants because of its gorgeous colors.
When you first got this plant was it pink? I’ve seen small ones that are pink but never purple. I much prefer the purple color!
No, it's been the same color the whole time I've had it. You may be thinking of the nanouk wondering dude. Those are pretty cool too.
I was recently watching one of your coconut palm videos and was thinking since my bathroom is always humid and has a south facing window do you think it would be a great spot for a coconut palm.
I do! Yes, they love a decent amount of light and about the same amount of humidity. With water, they are rather thirsty drinkers too. Annually they can receive well over two inches of rain. Keep me posted and let me know if you have any more questions! Plant Prudently!
ill continue to call it as is aint no way people are offended by that name and i doubt its jews who find it offensive
Would a self watering pot be OK for the Wandering Dude
I suppose it wouldn't hurt. It's best to water them under the leaves so I would think one of those would take care of that. You don't want the soil to stay saturated. You want it to be moist and have the same consistency as a wrung-out sponge. They're able to take small changes in their watering habits so as long as it's not a constant trickle of water similar to a drip irrigation system or one of those glass globes people often use it should suffice. I'm not knocking either of those I'm just saying occasionally they can take a break from constant watering. Try it out and let me know how it goes. You've piqued my curiosity.
@@TheGreenAlchemist I have been wick watering it and it seems to love it. Need to put it in a bigger pot now and have a good self watering pot. I'll try and take before and after photos. The Dude really needs a bigger pot now. They do go downhill quickly once they start.
thanks for the cute name, much better than the other kind of offensive name.
Not offensive in any way. This most prolific wanderer is named after the Jewish people who wandered in the desert for 40 years. A beautiful plant named after a beautiful people.
He’s cute
I love him and his colors!! Great potted plant pal!
What is offensive about the word "Jew" exactly? being a Jew is not an insult...
Being a jew is not an insult but we are speaking on the reason someone is calling a plant a jew. Which has nothing to do with jews
@@MarliQQLuv its called wandering because its a vining plant. Jews are often associated with wandering because of Exodus.
