  • Growing up my grandparents called it the wandering jew, and so did my parents. Fortunately a group of people got together to try and come up with a slightly less offensive name. What ever you call this plant make sure you watch the entire video so you know how to best care for your plant! Plant Prudently!

    I read a Comment on fb made by a woman of Jewish ancestry that said that from her Grandmother, the name Wandering Jew comes from it representing the exodus from egypt and the tribes 'wandering' through the desert. She stated that the name is not anti semitic or disrespectful.

      There are a lot of theories out there as to how this name came about. I think you are probably right, however just to be sure I'm gonna say, dude. I don't want to accidentally upset someone over a plant lol. Though it wouldn't be the first time.

      Evidently the name is offending to the ultra sensitive. Too bad it's real meaning has to be abolished. The plant is beautiful. It will always be a beautiful plant and one of my favorites.
      I do appreciate all the good information.

    Your plant is absolutely gorgeous! I just got one today. I fell in love with it at the nursery. I named it Jewel. I never even thought about the name Jew as offensive. Thank you, @dollhollidae1972, for clarifying the real reason for the name. The constant pruning seems like a lot of work, especially since I have so many plants with different needs, and I am still a newbie, nowhere far from having a green thumb. But I love gardening. I found it to be so peaceful and enjoyable. I guess everyone will be one or two of these for special occasions. Thanks for being so informative!

    I would love to see you demonstrate how you pinch off the leaves and stuff for pruning. I’m a Newbie and I’m having a hard time visualizing what you mean.

      @TheGreenAlchemist  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thank you for that idea. I can't believe I didn't think to do a video on that! I'll try and work it in soon! But to hold you until I do, if you pinch any plant back you generally want to pinch back about an inch or so below the tip of the stems/shoots.

    I just picked a neglected dude up at a big box store yesterday. I had never seen one before and it was too beautiful to pass by. The store didn't have a species name and the care labels were missing so I was a bit surprised by the common name coming up during the Google search. I loved your modern take on the name and your video! I know how to give this new plant the proper love.

      Good score! Yes, these are great plants to have. I love their beautiful, calming patterns and colors. Just remember the most bright yet indirect light you can provide is ideal. Watch your watering with this one and if it starts to get leggy prune back fairly liberally. Thanks for watching and plant prudently!

    I have a small tradescentia nanouk that I got a few weeks ago. It has more pink and pastel leaves and is a little more sturdy, not viney like the Zebrina, so not really for hanging pots. Your Zebrina is beautiful and HUGE. I wonder if mine could grow that big.

    • @TheGreenAlchemist
      @TheGreenAlchemist  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you. Normally it takes a couple years to get to this point but avid pruning and pinching back the leggy growths helps it get there much quicker. Doing so makes the plant send out two shoots which will make it more bushy. I've had one for about 6 years or 7 years.

    Would a self watering pot be OK for the Wandering Dude

    • @TheGreenAlchemist
      @TheGreenAlchemist  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I suppose it wouldn't hurt. It's best to water them under the leaves so I would think one of those would take care of that. You don't want the soil to stay saturated. You want it to be moist and have the same consistency as a wrung-out sponge. They're able to take small changes in their watering habits so as long as it's not a constant trickle of water similar to a drip irrigation system or one of those glass globes people often use it should suffice. I'm not knocking either of those I'm just saying occasionally they can take a break from constant watering. Try it out and let me know how it goes. You've piqued my curiosity.

      @@TheGreenAlchemist I have been wick watering it and it seems to love it. Need to put it in a bigger pot now and have a good self watering pot. I'll try and take before and after photos. The Dude really needs a bigger pot now. They do go downhill quickly once they start.
