BUT ranchers can be paid to diversify as now people can hunt them like in Africa!... we have not paid them enough for their beef. Do the flippin research before you bring in more invasive species!

Having received goji seeds as a free bonus with a seed order, I am growing them for the first time in Winnipeg. They germinated quickly and easily with the paper towel/ziploc bag method, and after just two weeks I have ten little sprouts under the grow light. Great video, thanks!
Fellow winnipeger here. I purchased bareroots last year from T&T seeds. Surprisingly, it flowered and gave me a handful of fruit even in our drought. Best of luck with your seeds!
Amazing video! Thank you so much Chris! Another tip for propagating by cutting-make your bottom cut at a 45 degree angle and your top cut straight. This is a great way to not confuse the top or bottom of the cutting, as planting your cutting upside down is a major rookie mistake! :) learned this in my propagation class and I do this with all of my cuttings!
I LOVE Goji berries 🍒❣️❣️❣️❣️ And I put pine needles on my potted Goji berry plant..but left a 2nd plant alone..last summer the Goji plant had way more berries than the one that had no pine needles...
I'm probably not the average viewer of this channel-- so far, so my aspirations of gardening are still only that. That's partially bc I'm multiply physically & mentally disabled/ill, to the point I often need external reminders to look out my window and see if the grass needs to be mowed... so when I replace my lawn with something that hopefully won't grow as tall as grass does, I'm also looking for low-/no-maintenance plants for my backyard that could thrive in my near- desert conditions & produce useful fruit/ herbs/ etc. Goji sure looks promising as a candidate for that list! Even if it will be a few years before I'm ready to plant it myself
got about 10 goji plants from seed in a little patch. just reached 2 years of age and looking great. One of them made a small berry so looking forward to eating some next year.

Gogi Berrry plants are easy to grow and set massive amounts of fruit. I live in coastal North Carolina and I find that they really don't like the hottest part of the summer here. they lose a lot of leaves. it is very hot and humid here. I grow mine in large 25 - 30 gallon pots so I can move them into a mostly shaded spot during July and August but then they bounce right back when the weather starts to cool a little and produce tons of fruit. I like to put the pots on a stack of cement blocks about 4 feet off the ground and let the plant drape downwards. I grow Life Berry, Vermillion Sunset, and one the was called Organic Gogi Tree. The Vermillion Sunset fruits before the others. Overall, I enjoy them.
I love my gojis. I grow them here in Idaho. They're cold resistent, I hardly water them, and hardly feed them. Seriously the easiest plant to grow and they are SO productive. I think they are sweeter than she described too.
I've not had them fresh but a friend told me they are like a cross between a sweet cherry tomato and a cherry. Is that true? I have a small plant we planted last year and about 40 seedlings lol. I guess I got carried away with seeding lol

My grandkiddos love cherry Tomatoes and all kinds of berries so im hoping these will be a hit with them. Silly kids would rather have a pint of cherry tomatoes instead of candy when we go shopping. I gladly buy them tomatoes tho. Its good for them
Excellent video. Gojis grow abundantly here in drought ridden central california. I started mine from dried berries from the health food store when plants were still hard to come by.They can spread outwards from the root zone but are easily managed. Also they can be thorny so place accordingly. When other foods are scarce, birds will eat the leaves but it has no long term effect. The berries are a favorite of the mockingbird here.The hummingbirds love the tiny blossoms. I've seen videos where the plant is grown more for leaves to make soup. Good to have in permaculture, survival type gardens. Thanks
Thanks for the info! Got a Goji last spring. Of the 2 that were at the nursery, it was the runt of the litter lol. As one that always roots for the underdog it came home with me. Within a couple of weeks it put out a few berries and was flourishing! One day as I was walking my yard I came to my goji... omg my heart fell! It looked like an animal had chewed it almost to the ground. I almost cried but told it how beauty it was as I headed for my clippers to clean it up...when I got back to it I realized that the person that mows my lawn had done a job on it with the weed eater! It's in a designated bed so it's not like it was in the middle of yard! To say the least I was not happy and I immediately found a cage to put over it. It's doing great now and I went back to nursery and got the other one they had...just in case! Love the berries on a salad! Haven't had a big crop but hopefully this year!

Self pollinating, durable, feeds bees and humming birds, edible leaves and fruit and relatively low maintenance. What is not to love about this plant? I guess sourcing one from the local organic nursery might be the only issue.
Not sure where you are but I actually have one small plant my family bought me last year at sams club. Came with another plant in the box it was supposed to be 2 goji but one was obviously a grape vine of some type. We call it a wonder grape cuz we are all wondering what it will be lol 😆
PNW gardeners often need to protect gogi plants from powdery mildew. So far, they are staying alive in my pots that get little attention throughout the winter. They are under some winter shelter from my eaves so they are not rain soaked. Leaves are starting to come out now in early March. Thank you for the helpful video!!!
I covered some of ours for the winter because although our growing season is long and the winters are short, we usually do get -20 to -10 degrees Celsius at some point each year, but the ones I didn't cover are doing fine. There's no difference.
I love Chris' method for layering. It never even crossed my mind to do it that way. It's such a quick hands-off solution versus the typical growing medium wrap situation.
She didn’t mentioned that Goji Berrie is invasive, I had 3 but I went down to 1 because it was to much production and size, I have to fight with the side shoots like weeds in my garden, the bees and birds loves them that is one of the reasons I keep it, dry goji berries have better and sweeter flavor than fresh ones, I only mulch it with compost and to be honest don’t water it to much, pruned all the way down to 1’ tall in fall and in summer it is a massive bush of 7’ tall and 7’ wide, so give the a big space 😀

Goji is incredibly easy to grow and does spread. The leaves are also very nutritious and used in soup and stir fries. (Many recipes online.) Young leaves are the tastiest.
This video actually DID inspire me to grab a Goji plant from my local greenhouse this year. On my porch until I'm ready to plant. Now that I bought it I rewatched this and I'm so excited to plant! Thank you Epic team! I feel like you all are my best friends and you dont even know me.
Regarding the edible leaves, I was told by a Traditional Chinese Medicine doctor that in China, the goji leaves are considered to be the primary crop, as they are a superfood in their own right, and the berries are the bonus crop. I use both, both fresh and dried. I've had my gojis in pots for several years, and propagate from cuttings regularly, but I'm determined this year to finally get them in the ground. I'm on acreage, so I'm not worried about them suckering.
Bought a goji two years ago and put it in a partial shaded spot. Was worried when everything looked so scraggly and I had no fruit last summer. This puts my mind at ease, and excites me to see if I get fruit this year!!!
I planted 2 goji berry trees and I didn’t like them. I decided to leave them in my food forest so the birds can eat them. I am planting an edible row for the wild life on the edge of my food forest to try and keep them out of my food forest. I planted a few hundred wild persimmon tree seeds all over my land that I collected from a friends property. I’m probably going to add a few more goji berries to the wild life’s row. I’m adding different nut trees for the squirrels as well even though I haven’t seen very many of them. I’m pretty sure their population will skyrocket once my food forest starts producing really good. The deer and rabbits will hopefully be happy with their edible food row.
Great info Chris. I'm in California zone 9a. Hot, dry climate. Goji does grow fast and unruly, full of thrones. It's growing in a raised bed and sending out runners like crazy. Even coming up at lawn level from raised bed above! Glad it can be severely pruned. It is a highly nutritious fruit. We mix them into shakes or add to hot oates cereal. I would recommend container grown at least in my area.
Inspired by this video, I got a couple of cuttings last week from a woman across town with a flourishing goji hedge-hoping I can get the ground prepped before they wither in the heat we've been getting!
Coincidentally I ordered some seeds a couple of weeks ago. A little disheartening to know it could take 4 years before I see fruit when growing from seed. But it will be a good experiment and I will have plenty of time to figure out the best place in the yard to plant it. Awesome info!
I have one in Calgary AB (zone2) it is thriving. The plant is indestructible. Our weather is crazy here. We had an October hit minus 9 C for about a week a few years ago the plant had leaves on it froze solid and next spring was fine. It produces nice fruit, but now the local birds figured out how tasty they pick it clean. It is a very prolific plant with shoots coming up all around so it spreads very fast I would recommend growing it in a large container but you can use it like a hedge too. It requires no care really but you can trim it. The stems have very sharp strong thorns as well.

This is a new plant to me. Never heard of it before or seen them at my local stores/ nurseries. Having trouble with my blueberries dying off- this may be a replacement for them. Those flowers are beautiful!!
I love cooking with goji berries and enjoy putting them in my bone broths. I had no idea you could eat the leaves too. I'm interested in growing one now.
Hey there, Propagation is much faster n easier, n I do all the time. Pull out all big leaves but won't worry about the tiny ones. Put cuttings in a mug, fill with a couple inches of water, let them sit near the window without direct sunlight, change water every couple of days, n they'll have roots in a week's time in summer, may take longer time in winter (✌️ weeks). I always enjoy picking the leaves for my beef soup n pork liver soup. 💪💪 happy gardening 😊
These are a great berry to grow in California my plant kept fruiting and flowering all year and i was able to plant the seeds from some berries and got them to bloom and fruit a year after sprouting
Mine was bought this spring from Sam’s 2 bare roots in a package. I put them both into a 20 gallon nursery pot I got free from people who were planting on the sides of the street for the city. Planted in “Living soil” I got for free than some people who had grown hemp in it, but were moving their business and had not grown in the soil a couple of years. I am zone 7b I think in Tennessee. Today is July 17 and I have one cute little flower and lots of buds.
I've seen dried goji berries in the bulk foods section of our local Fred Meyer; but, it has been a while. I've never seen plants, not even with the names that Chris suggested. From her description, it seems like a plant that I would want to try.
Growing them from seed is easy. I grew a couple from seeds I got from soaking a few berries and collecting the seeds. Fred Meyer, eh? Wow! I grew up in Federal Way! You got me all nostalgic
I grew mine from the seeds of dried goji berries I found in my cereal. Just soak a berry in water for a while. You can then squeeze the inside with the seeds out easily. No need to clean and separate the seeds. Just spread it out with your finger on some soil and put some soil over it when done.
I ordered Black Goji berry seeds from Baker Creek this year. I planted 3 seeds and all 3 came up. Thank you for this info. I'm looking forward to them fruiting ... 4 years from now, oh my!

Our goji plant is in a large metal trash can and it just loves it 3 years later! We drilled holes in the bottom and about 2 inches up from the bottom for drainage. It sits in a sunny spot and has a trellis.
I received my bare root goji berry plant about a month ago and because of life getting in the way lol and it started growing from the bag it was shipped in. I planted it today in a pot. 🙏🙏🙏

Omg Kevin. Those goji berries look exactly like my chili pequin pepper plant fruit. The resemblance of the size, color and shape are striking, albeit the structure of the plant. Does anyone know if it is within the same family/genus and could be crossbred? Maybe that’s just a stupid question but I find myself more and more often stupefied by how closely the two resemble each other and how that phenomena occurs beyond just edible plant species. this is so helpful i just got my first goji in the sale it was only 2 English pounds im hoping i can make more goji babies and fill my trellis with healthy berries for a long time
Since I didn't do a trellis my Goji spread out across the ground and put down roots in several locations, much like the Sweat Potato in the section above it. So I could spread it to more, but not much loving the taste, it's like biting into a tomato that gets crunchy as you get into the seeds, gotta try drying it out and see if I like it that way. I planted mine around this time last year, was just a small plant in a like 3 quart container when it arrived, started pushing out some growth in the spring then we got hit by a frost and all the new growth died and the leaves shriveled up, thought the thing was done for, NOPE, over the last 6-8 months the thing has grown to be like 20 times the size it was with stringers going in every direction, then in September I noticed the flowers and now everyday I walk by I see more and more Red Berries on it. This thing has put my Blueberries to shames with how much faster it has grown and how much more it has produced.

Very good info and explanation thank you. I've seen some studies where they say Goji is also good for eyes and also longetivity.. I don't know if you knew but there was a guy called Li Ching-Yuen born in 1677 and there are some records in the Imperial Chinese government records from 1827 congratulating one Li Ching-Yuen on his 150th birthday and also documents on congratulating him on his 200th birthday in 1877. He worked as a herbalist and lived off a diet of herbs and rice wine including lingzhi, *Goji* berry, wild ginseng, he shou wu and gotu kola.
Great presentation! I have a goji berry plant and needed this information. The harvest has been wonderful…about 5 pounds. I dehydrated the berries and made powder. I’ll try making it into a jam.
Very timely as I have my seed packet next to me, "Scarlet", from Baker Creek. Been eating them as part of my nut and seed snack mix and jumped on the opportunity when I saw BC selling them.
I got mine there this year too. I had read they do not germinate well so I planted half the package. I have 40 babies under my lights right now lol. So beware lol. I might buy the black ones next year 🤔 I love baker creek seeds. My fun order as it had a name I couldn't pass up. Thai Green frog finger eggplants lol. Ive always disliked the big Italian type eggplants for being seedy and bitter but I got brave and bought some Asian eggplants a couple summers ago at a farm stand. Best darn flavor ever. Now I know why people love eggplants. I grew Chinese string eggplants last summer and they were so yummy that none made it into the freezer for winter eating lol. Cross your fingers for me.
When you said that Goji berries were easy to grow, you weren't joking. I'm pleased to report that the pot full of cuttings I took about 3 weeks ago, have all taken root, and I'm very happy to say that I now have 5 new strong and healthy little Goji berry starts. Thanks again for the tips.
As a hardy Asian plant, is there any concern of them becoming invasive in some North American climates? Or are they too slow-growing for that to happen?

Have you ever covered pineapples as they are very easy to grow. You just don't have a high yield

PNW gardeners often need to protect gogi plants from powdery mildew. So far, they are staying alive in my pots that get little attention throughout the winter. They are under some winter shelter from my eaves so they are not rain soaked. Leaves are starting to come out now in early March.

They're native to very mountainous regions, I've even see them grow in the Himalayas.
I covered some of ours for the winter because although our growing season is long and the winters are short, we usually do get -20 to -10 degrees Celsius at some point each year, but the ones I didn't cover are doing fine. There's no difference.
I'm growing them in southern Alberta! You're good to go :)

I love Chris' method for layering. It never even crossed my mind to do it that way. It's such a quick hands-off solution versus the typical growing medium wrap situation.

She didn’t mentioned that Goji Berrie is invasive, I had 3 but I went down to 1 because it was to much production and size, I have to fight with the side shoots like weeds in my garden, the bees and birds loves them that is one of the reasons I keep it, dry goji berries have better and sweeter flavor than fresh ones, I only mulch it with compost and to be honest don’t water it to much, pruned all the way down to 1’ tall in fall and in summer it is a massive bush of 7’ tall and 7’ wide, so give the a big space 😀

If you don't want them to sucker, simply grow them in a raised bed or large container, such as a 5-gallon bucket.

Goji is incredibly easy to grow and does spread. The leaves are also very nutritious and used in soup and stir fries. (Many recipes online.) Young leaves are the tastiest.
This video actually DID inspire me to grab a Goji plant from my local greenhouse this year. On my porch until I'm ready to plant. Now that I bought it I rewatched this and I'm so excited to plant! Thank you Epic team! I feel like you all are my best friends and you dont even know me.
Regarding the edible leaves, I was told by a Traditional Chinese Medicine doctor that in China, the goji leaves are considered to be the primary crop, as they are a superfood in their own right, and the berries are the bonus crop. I use both, both fresh and dried.
I've had my gojis in pots for several years, and propagate from cuttings regularly, but I'm determined this year to finally get them in the ground.
I'm on acreage, so I'm not worried about them suckering.
Bought a goji two years ago and put it in a partial shaded spot. Was worried when everything looked so scraggly and I had no fruit last summer. This puts my mind at ease, and excites me to see if I get fruit this year!!!

I planted 2 goji berry trees and I didn’t like them. I decided to leave them in my food forest so the birds can eat them. I am planting an edible row for the wild life on the edge of my food forest to try and keep them out of my food forest. I planted a few hundred wild persimmon tree seeds all over my land that I collected from a friends property. I’m probably going to add a few more goji berries to the wild life’s row. I’m adding different nut trees for the squirrels as well even though I haven’t seen very many of them. I’m pretty sure their population will skyrocket once my food forest starts producing really good. The deer and rabbits will hopefully be happy with their edible food row.

Great info Chris. I'm in California zone 9a. Hot, dry climate. Goji does grow fast and unruly, full of thrones. It's growing in a raised bed and sending out runners like crazy. Even coming up at lawn level from raised bed above! Glad it can be severely pruned. It is a highly nutritious fruit. We mix them into shakes or add to hot oates cereal. I would recommend container grown at least in my area.
Inspired by this video, I got a couple of cuttings last week from a woman across town with a flourishing goji hedge-hoping I can get the ground prepped before they wither in the heat we've been getting!
Coincidentally I ordered some seeds a couple of weeks ago. A little disheartening to know it could take 4 years before I see fruit when growing from seed. But it will be a good experiment and I will have plenty of time to figure out the best place in the yard to plant it. Awesome info!

I have one in Calgary AB (zone2) it is thriving. The plant is indestructible. Our weather is crazy here. We had an October hit minus 9 C for about a week a few years ago the plant had leaves on it froze solid and next spring was fine. It produces nice fruit, but now the local birds figured out how tasty they pick it clean. It is a very prolific plant with shoots coming up all around so it spreads very fast I would recommend growing it in a large container but you can use it like a hedge too. It requires no care really but you can trim it. The stems have very sharp strong thorns as well.

Thanks, Chris, for such a thorough introduction to the goji plant! I'm going to have to keep my eyes peeled for one. I'd love to grow it in a container and possibly try to turn it into an espalier. It seems like it would be easy enough to train it and it would look pretty cool, too!

This is a new plant to me. Never heard of it before or seen them at my local stores/ nurseries. Having trouble with my blueberries dying off- this may be a replacement for them. Those flowers are beautiful!!

Hey there, Propagation is much faster n easier, n I do all the time. Pull out all big leaves but won't worry about the tiny ones. Put cuttings in a mug, fill with a couple inches of water, let them sit near the window without direct sunlight, change water every couple of days, n they'll have roots in a week's time in summer, may take longer time in winter (✌️ weeks).
I always enjoy picking the leaves for my beef soup n pork liver soup.

These are a great berry to grow in California my plant kept fruiting and flowering all year and i was able to plant the seeds from some berries and got them to bloom and fruit a year after sprouting
Mine was bought this spring from Sam’s 2 bare roots in a package. I put them both into a 20 gallon nursery pot I got free from people who were planting on the sides of the street for the city. Planted in “Living soil” I got for free than some people who had grown hemp in it, but were moving their business and had not grown in the soil a couple of years. I am zone 7b I think in Tennessee. Today is July 17 and I have one cute little flower and lots of buds.
I've seen dried goji berries in the bulk foods section of our local Fred Meyer; but, it has been a while. I've never seen plants, not even with the names that Chris suggested. From her description, it seems like a plant that I would want to try.
Growing them from seed is easy. I grew a couple from seeds I got from soaking a few berries and collecting the seeds. Fred Meyer, eh? Wow! I grew up in Federal Way! You got me all nostalgic
I grew mine from the seeds of dried goji berries I found in my cereal.
Just soak a berry in water for a while. You can then squeeze the inside with the seeds out easily. No need to clean and separate the seeds. Just spread it out with your finger on some soil and put some soil over it when done.

Our goji plant is in a large metal trash can and it just loves it 3 years later! We drilled holes in the bottom and about 2 inches up from the bottom for drainage. It sits in a sunny spot and has a trellis.

Omg Kevin. Those goji berries look exactly like my chili pequin pepper plant fruit. The resemblance of the size, color and shape are striking, albeit the structure of the plant. Does anyone know if it is within the same family/genus and could be crossbred? Maybe that’s just a stupid question but I find myself more and more often stupefied by how closely the two resemble each other and how that phenomena occurs beyond just edible plant species.

this is so helpful i just got my first goji in the sale it was only 2 English pounds im hoping i can make more goji babies and fill my trellis with healthy berries for a long time
Since I didn't do a trellis my Goji spread out across the ground and put down roots in several locations, much like the Sweat Potato in the section above it. So I could spread it to more, but not much loving the taste, it's like biting into a tomato that gets crunchy as you get into the seeds, gotta try drying it out and see if I like it that way.
I planted mine around this time last year, was just a small plant in a like 3 quart container when it arrived, started pushing out some growth in the spring then we got hit by a frost and all the new growth died and the leaves shriveled up, thought the thing was done for, NOPE, over the last 6-8 months the thing has grown to be like 20 times the size it was with stringers going in every direction, then in September I noticed the flowers and now everyday I walk by I see more and more Red Berries on it. This thing has put my Blueberries to shames with how much faster it has grown and how much more it has produced.
You are a very good instructor. I always wanted to grow but I have all of my veg and fruit in large container and barrels. I'm glad I found your channel. 😊

Very good info and explanation thank you. I've seen some studies where they say Goji is also good for eyes and also longetivity.. I don't know if you knew but there was a guy called Li Ching-Yuen born in 1677 and there are some records in the Imperial Chinese government records from 1827 congratulating one Li Ching-Yuen on his 150th birthday and also documents on congratulating him on his 200th birthday in 1877. He worked as a herbalist and lived off a diet of herbs and rice wine including lingzhi, *Goji* berry, wild ginseng, he shou wu and gotu kola.
Great presentation! I have a goji berry plant and needed this information. The harvest has been wonderful…about 5 pounds. I dehydrated the berries and made powder. I’ll try making it into a jam.

Very timely as I have my seed packet next to me, "Scarlet", from Baker Creek. Been eating them as part of my nut and seed snack mix and jumped on the opportunity when I saw BC selling them.
I got mine there this year too. I had read they do not germinate well so I planted half the package. I have 40 babies under my lights right now lol. So beware lol.

Ive always disliked the big Italian type eggplants for being seedy and bitter but I got brave and bought some Asian eggplants a couple summers ago at a farm stand. Best darn flavor ever. Now I know why people love eggplants. I grew Chinese string eggplants last summer and they were so yummy that none made it into the freezer for winter eating lol.

When you said that Goji berries were easy to grow, you weren't joking. I'm pleased to report that the pot full of cuttings I took about 3 weeks ago, have all taken root, and I'm very happy to say that I now have 5 new strong and healthy little Goji berry starts. Thanks again for the tips.

As a hardy Asian plant, is there any concern of them becoming invasive in some North American climates? Or are they too slow-growing for that to happen?
They can be invasive yes. Caution should be taken in areas they do well in.
