One of my favorite scenes in the movie. David was one of the few characters that didn't look down on Elle, so she helped him in return.

Wasn't that part of the point for this movie, to take the rich blonde girl b*tchy bimbo and make her into a smart and kind character to bust the stereotype.
Sadly many characters like that gets re-cast or re-written in a way that either breaks another stereotype or just misses the point completely. Early 2000's-2015 were great years for movies. It really felt like the people working on them cared and weren't just after the money.

How pathetic. Some people are so condescending and disrespectful to you, and then when you do something amazing, they suddenly respect you. It's ridiculous. My boss is a perfect example. She was upset I had signed up for a one-person shift. I'd always been kind of slow and _seemingly_ incompetent, like Neville Longbottom. She scolded a student leader for not noticing I had signed up to go solo. When she asked him if she thought I could do the shift, I answered for him with a firm "yes," because I felt belittled by her. She said she didn't think so, was like, "I've told you not to sign up for shifts by yourself, I've been very clear about that, I don't know how much clearer I can get for you to listen", and she told me I needed someone there to guide me. And then what happened that night?
I saved a man from a thug, grappling with a guy who was bigger and stronger than me and had a gun. I could've easily been beaten or shot, but I luckily struck him in between the legs and followed with more hits and disarming. After he was arrested, my boss ran up to me and yelled, "John, you were so noble and resourceful! You should be incredibly proud of yourself! I know I am! You deserve all the praise and respect you can get!" And that's when I dramatically quit the job.

I think that instead she saw herself in that situation, but from the perspective of the guy.
This scene might've reminded her of the time Warner rejected her, basically saying that she wasn't good enough for him. Then, she overhears these girls saying of that guy isn't good enough for them, so she decides to help him out, having been in that situation herself.
      Just a thought though.

As a guy that grew up awkward & unsure around women, I loved this scene.
Director Robert Luketic stated the he "wanted someone with gravitas and brains. There had to be more behind the face, and Reese Witherspoon just fit the bill."
Witherspoon played the character that was very deep in thought and understanding. 'Elle Woods' was very observant and cared about the people around her.
    GREAT SCENE!
