When a key witness in the murder trial insults Elle's (Reese Witherspoon) shoes, she discerns that he is gay and helps discredit him.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Reese Witherspoon stars in this romantic comedy, the feature film debut of award-winning Australian director Robert Luketic. it was a movie error tbh... the writer forgot that chuck's boyfriend had to pretend chuck is straight and ended up writing a piece where chuck's boyfriend gets offended, just for the sake of a joke. Like chucks boyfriend is dumb and doesn't know they were pretending.
I have two theories
1. He was in the closet and his boyfriend wanted him to come out, but couldn't to keep up the act, so when he told that in front of everyone, chuck had enough
2. Chuck just said what he did out of impulse

Will C Well if you think about it, Elle broke Chutney down by having her reveal her emotionally driven hatred towards her stepmom. Had Elle not made those powerful points against Chutney, the cold exterior would have held up past most others who didn’t have such insight, and in terms of court, the defendant would be found guilty for lack of evidence proving her innocence. Of course, as a novice in law studies, I could err.
I love Emmet! He always believed in Elle and took her seriously when nobody else did.

This is honestly one of my favourite parts of Elle’s character. She was judged so harshly for being a barbie-esque glam girl, but those attributes are also what made her see a unique perspective as a lawyer. 10/10

The scary thing is, this is a legit tactic both lawyers and cops will use to try and get you to admit to something, or to trip you up and poke holes in your alibi/testimony. You sink into autopilot, and whoops! Truth slips out!

This is easy; they've got this....followed by the Nuke approach, so called for tripping them up and letting their own answer nuke their entire testimony.
I would've thought though, that sort of tactic, you need to be a bit faster so there's no real time to think about your answers and therefore have time to think of a lie. Emmett gave this guy plenty of pauses and time to think about his answer.

In this case it is a psychological trick to get someone to lower their guard by asking easy questions they are trained to respond to, like a yes or no question. You then switch to something more serious which requires time to refocus to a prompt. My best friend is gay and he doesn't know the first thing about designers. It's so depressing. He's constantly in tshirts and gym shorts. He'll dress to the nines for special occasions but has no idea what anything anyone else is wearing belongs to.

Yeah there are some moments of this movie that of course didn’t age well.
I mean, the entire implication that straight men can't recognize brands... I feel like Warner's entire upbringing as the preppy 90s yuppie would be marked by men's wear brands.
Although to be fair, the shoes didn't have gaudy labels where you're essentially advertising for the brand. So Warner as a man would not be familiar with women's shoes that don't have the designer's name on them.
