A lot of "saving the world" type fail at this respect thing. It is actually quite hard to be consistently respectful and understanding in a long term relationship. I'd much rather have someone nailing the basic things over and over again, rather than attempting to save the world. 🙂

The part I like the most is that although the excitement level was the same as for a crush, she didn't even crush on him. To get excited this much for someone that you don't feel any attraction, it means that there must be some genuine respect and appreciation. Their relationship was not a love at first sign scenario, but one of mutual friendship, interest,, care and respect. I always found them to be one of my favourite couples on TV

In a deleted scene, Vivian and Elle talked about Warner. She knew more about him because she was his first girlfriend who dumped him back in their private high school. When Warner returned to his hometown in Cambridge, MA, he found out that he got put on the waitlist for transfers at Harvard University. From there, Vivian revealed that he had been flunking 3 of his classes, had a bad GPA, didn't pass the LSAT and had no good recommendations from his professors at CULA. Warner only got in because his father had to call in for a favor to the Head of Admissions. Even then, it didn't save him from his family's wrath and this is his last chance to make them proud of him. It was the moment Elle saw the kind of guy Warner really is inside and how he was nothing without his family's influence. She realizes that she should go with a more mature and down to earth guy like Emmett Richmond.

Male love interests have gone through this “nice” guy entitlement to “alpha” CEO’S who have to mention “control “ repeatedly. Emmett was a sincere partner who was a great love interest because he is a good friend to begin with. May all of us, not only hold onto hope for this kind of supportive partner but strive to be it for another person.
The great thing about Elle and Emmett is that their romantic relationship happens entirely off screen in the first movie, but when the epilogue text says he will propose, you are happy, because their friendship is so strong before they begin dating.

They also help each other follow their own dreams, neither of them step back from having their own thing and encourage the other to have their own thing. It's not always easy, but it helps when you know the other is right there whichever way life is going. Also they care about each other regardless of if they succeed or not, they aren't trying to set a bar for their level of success or comparing who's doing better, they want each other to be proud of trying and getting back up again, but are also okay with them needing to step back or take a knee before getting back into it.
Elle: "Well, how's it going to look, a Harvard Law professor married to a lawyer who got fired from her first job?" Emmett: "Fired from something she believes in. It's going to look like 'Hey, there goes the luckiest guy in the whole world.'" Emmett is the best 🥰
I love how he even understands her bond with Bruiser in the sequel - like when he says “Bruiser doesn’t blame you.” Respectful, loyal, kind and a dog lover - Elle found her Mr Right!
This is one of the few films where a woman is in a relationship while maintaining a career and the two things aren’t a source of conflict in the movie. Emmett is just a supportive partner to Elle (as he should be). So refreshing.
I also liked (generally for the movie) how they didn't make Emmett the main point of the (first) movie at all, or even a strong side plot. They truly kept it about her and her development and experiences, and he had subtle moments that helped her grow as he believed in her and at times helped bring out the best in her. The small tidbits at the end telling us that they had started dating and would get engaged after the graduation was just a cherry on top of our happiness for her. Its charming and subtle but not 'marketed' or 'in your face' as a romance line. They could have very well been friends. Sorry if im being unclear, but I just liked that lots.
I feel that movie Emmett has a more sensitive side than musical Emmett. It took time for Emmett in the musical to become more soft to Elle. It is nice to see such a contrast between them, but it is wonderful that they both had faith and never doubted Elle. I really can’t decide which is better. I think we can all agree though-Warner has always been creepy. Not saying that it is not creepy to stalk a guy to Harvard though.

Ok, she did get 4.0 in marketing and 179 on her LSATs and those are amazing, but she did spend the first few months moping around. That's wasted months. The movie made her very very independent to the point where it's practically impossible. When you consider that Emmett is helping her pro bono while he could be doing some other job(its established he has no money), then her repayment in kind with the suit, I think that sends a great message and good plot as well. I guess I like the fact that there's someone in your corner when you need help. Also, I dont know about law school, but as someone who took engineering, studying together was more helpful cause I feel like I can gather more information from other people as well. Im assuming that would also be the case for law(different perspectives in legal defense? Idk) One last thing, i dont think a law student can represent anyone as in the movie, therefore what she did could be illegal. In the musical, Emmett was there as The lawyer and she said "legal team". She still did all the thinking and defense for Paullette, so I think that's super.

Legally blonde is one of the few movie/musicals that I actually genuinely like equally. They both approach characterisation and plot points slightly differently but both work and still capture the heart and essence of the story and characters
So, this topic is interesting: I have always preferred movie Elle, because she didn’t need Emmett to study. It never made sense when she clearly can study given she excelled the LSATS. She dropped Warner early on (as opposed to So Much Better suggesting it took the internship for her to get over it), and focused on her studies for herself. She is just a lot better in the film. As far as Emmett, it’s a mixed bag. I like how he is just a nice dude in the movie. Nothing major. Nothing deep. Just a dude who wanted to be a lawyer and likes Elle. I also liked how they kinda just suggested Elle was already interested in him. But Musical Emmett has the backstory that contrasts Elle’s privileged upbringing. She came into Harvard on two things: Her intellect and Her dads money. That’s just the fact. Emmett didn’t have money, so he had to really claw his way to Harvard, so his frustration at her lack of focus is understandable and really is something we could have used in the film (not Emmett being poor but Elle maybe recognizing her privilege). I think one scene we do get is the scene where she helps Paulette get her dog back. Paulette is poor and would never be able to afford a lawyer so Elle posing as one (very bad idea irl) put her at risk but it was clearly important.
as a bubbly, petite girl I really empathize with Elle being underestimated all the time. Emmett saw what others couldn't see and believed in her from the beginning and I love that for them! I feel so lucky to have finally met someone who does the same for me as well. it's important to see your own worth, but it sure is great to have someone so supportive in your life too.
A cliche I hate in film franchises is when the main couple gets together in the first movie, but then by the second film they're either already broken up or the plot surrounds some relationship dispute they have to mend. I am SO happy this franchise didn't go that route and instead, in the second film, have Elle and Emmett in the realistic happy healthy relationship you'd expect them to be in. And not only that, it is maintained consistently throughout the film, especially showing Emmett supporting Elle's endeavors just like he did in the first film.
just realized that scene is a throwback to the first movie when warner broke up with her: "get in the car, elle." "no." "you'll ruin your shoes" vs emmett wanting to cheer her up with wedding planning because he loves her. elle really said UPGRADE
The best scene in my opinion is when she wins the case at the end of the first movie and everyone is like oh my god but he doesn’t because he was so sure that she would win. ❤❤❤
It's the way he didn't try to make any move, he was always just so kind, helpful and honest - with no agenda, that's just who he was and their bond started organically, love that sm ❤
Emmet shows such good emotional intelligence, he doesn’t try to lie to her but tries to build her up for her traits. He gives her advice on her professors and tells her at a point where she’s trying to conform that she doesn’t need to but use what’s unique about her as her strength. He truly recognizes she is capable and doesn’t try to undermine her emotions even to most people they seem silly. I think in some ways the second movie stands out to me more because they’re trying to plan a wedding but she can’t ignore how much Bruiser means to her as part of her family and it means a lot that he doesn’t get upset at the fact she isn’t focusing on him or their relationship. It’s not necessarily something everyone always gets, that pets are just as much family and Emmet recognizing that above the symbolic importance of a wedding is really wonderful.
I need to rewatch this film because I totally never realised she told him he needs to just believe in people, because he listened to her and that’s exactly what he did and he got the girl ❤

update: I have a man like that now!!
A cliche I hate in film franchises is when the main couple gets together in the first movie, but then by the second film they're either already broken up or the plot surrounds some relationship dispute they have to mend. I am SO happy this franchise didn't go that route and instead, in the second film, have Elle and Emmett in the realistic happy healthy relationship you'd expect them to be in. And not only that, it is maintained consistently throughout the film, especially showing Emmett supporting Elle's endeavors just like he did in the first film.
Their love is so underrated. Literally couple goals.
Emmet is a fairy tale guy. Wow would be a true blessing to have such a man in a life

The best scene in my opinion is when she wins the case at the end of the first movie and everyone is like oh my god but he doesn’t because he was so sure that she would win. ❤❤❤

Emmet shows such good emotional intelligence, he doesn’t try to lie to her but tries to build her up for her traits. He gives her advice on her professors and tells her at a point where she’s trying to conform that she doesn’t need to but use what’s unique about her as her strength. He truly recognizes she is capable and doesn’t try to undermine her emotions even to most people they seem silly. I think in some ways the second movie stands out to me more because they’re trying to plan a wedding but she can’t ignore how much Bruiser means to her as part of her family and it means a lot that he doesn’t get upset at the fact she isn’t focusing on him or their relationship. It’s not necessarily something everyone always gets, that pets are just as much family and Emmet recognizing that above the symbolic importance of a wedding is really wonderful.
"There goes the luckiest guy in the whole world." So cute. It's a woman's dream to hear those words from the guy she loves.
Usually with sequels they erase or ruin the relationship that was built in the previous movie, I'm glad this was not the case

Loved Frozen when it first came out and I read the novelization before the movie. I figured Anna and Kristoff would end up together. Now that they're engaged to be married, I hope they'll start planning their wedding.
