one of the favorite things about this movie is that they didn’t make elle’s group of friends toxic. they truly want the best for her and that’s such a nice change from other feminine movies

      Yesss
Like there was a bit of a risk of it potentially going the 'its ok to be pretty only if youre also very smart and into academics at the same time' route, but no, her friends were kinda comic reliefs but the movie never put down girls who dared to be girly while not being the brightest (while ALSO not putting girls down who were the opposite!!), they were always 101% nice and supportive
And Emmet, he and their romance lowkey had a small role but that was actually a good thing.
The best kind of husband material is the guy you can just be friends with, who sees and appreciates you as a person above all and trusts in your capabilities. And who you enjoy being around, and you support eachother, but you don't complete eachother, because you're both already full people on your own.
You can have a relationship with a good man in your life and still have him not be the focus of it!!
So glad they took the risk and put him more in the background, and only annouced their relationship in a line during the graduation scene a few years later having basically all the romance happen off-screen.
Never had to do any grand romantic gestures either, just being a good friend with mutual romantic interest was enough. And he was a good guy that got along with Elle from the start, she didn't 'need' to make him better!! And he didn't have to 'win' her.
Ofc they helped eachother improve a bit, no one is perfect, but it was in normal and relatively small ways.
They have a normal, believable, healthy adult relationship with eachothers best interest in mind, like how all the other friendships she has and makes troughout the movie (other than 2 characters who get their ass handed to them for it) are based on mutual support and respect.
It doesn't matter how girly or formal your friends are, how smart or ditzy, the specifics of the relationship, as long as you enjoy eachothers company and treat eachother genuinely well that's all that matters.
Elle building such a supportive friend group of Harvard students while also still having a supportive friendgroup of sorority girls was so beautiful. And one isn't portrayed as necessarily better than the other, just different.
So much subtle things that are only noticeable when you compare it to other movies

In this era there was the big "not like other girls" insistence, where beautiful women were beautiful and intelligent, but they were not pink- referred to as social outcasts because they were chronically introverted and apparently 'losers'. This was the time where the villain was always pink and evil, hyperfeminine but cruel.
I get what you're saying, but it's obviously incorrect to assume hyperfemininity was seen as the norm for the main character.

    • @JadeDAngelo
      @JadeDAngelo ปีที่แล้ว +12

@@alondrita3107 The biggest comedy pun in the movie is exactly that the girl behaves dumb, but also happens to be smart. She is however not intellectual, her interests are fashion magazines and her dog. So, I am not sure whether what you are describing is not just a trait of the movie itself. Nowadays, movies are much more sensitive in their treatment of women, but they don't feature characters quite like El either 🙂

I also loved it because it shows how knowledgeable she actually is about her interests. She immediately knew the woman was lying because she was familiar with the fabric, and because she already saw the dress in another issue of teen vogue, so she's very well-versed in fashion. And in the court scene she could say the rules of perming your hair off the top of her head! It's another layer of the movie that shows that "girly" and "shallow, vain" interests still requires a lot of knowledge and intelligence. The amount of times I've seen someone undermine skills like make up and fashion makes me appreciate that part of the movie so much

Elle Woods is one of favorite examples that femininity doesn’t mean pettiness or “being a bimbo”. She was always comfortable with herself and ready to flaunt her intelligence but never in a condescending way unless it was deserved (see: court lines✨). An icon for certain 💖

And her sorority friends that were a bit 'dumber' than her were never mean or jealous, they always did their best to fully support her friend, and their friendship never suffered due to Elle 'becoming smarter' (other than Elle moving further away). While they were a bit of a comedic relief, the movie never put down women who were both feminine and not academically skilled.

I was in high school when this movie came out. Keep in mind: this was released around the same time Paris Hilton and Jessica Simpson made a fortune banking on the "dumb blonde" caricature. That tactic was successful because hyperfeminine women are so commonly ridiculed. They're dismissed as airheaded, frivolous, and shallow. They're mocked for things such as being drawn to pink girlie things, or squealing when they're excited, or caring way too much about their eyebrows.
*This movie was so ahead of its time.* Elle Woods is aware of the disdain for her, and she even tries to tone down her personality to "fit in," but in the end she embraces her personality and makes it work. She was a Gen Z icon during the age of millennials who hadn't quite gotten the memo yet. I salute you, Elle Woods!

What the hell does that mean, "a Gen Z icon during the age of millennials who hadn't quite gotten the memo yet"? I'm a millennial and I was 8 years old when this movie came out, a young child. And most of Gen Z wasn't born yet. What is with people making everything about a generation identity? The character of Elle Woods isn't about being confined to a generation, hence the Jacquie/Marilyn reference. Elle is timeless

    • @CarolinaS.Mendonca
      @CarolinaS.Mendonca 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@Amalthea16 it means generation behavior. Millennials are not just the ones that were born in your year, it’s usually from 1981 to 1996. As you can see, and don’t take it personally, there are a lot of common behaviors between generation. Millennials used to rivalize girls against each other, and gen z try more to support one another, worries about social causes, and a lot of themes that were not considered important for millennials. Therefore, Elle Woods has more gen z actions…

You should absolutely, 100% go watch the movie immediately. The musical came out when I was in high school, and while it’s a good musical in terms of entertainment (yes, I do still have the soundtrack memorized, shut up) it doesn’t do Elle justice AT ALL. It sacrifices a lot of her autonomy and work ethic in order to give others (mostly Emmett) something to do, and glosses over her intelligence and frankness because a goofy musical with lots of heavy numbers doesn’t have time to dive that deeply into her personality (plus, they likely assume everyone’s already seen the movie, so they get the gist).

She started out as pink but considering switching the colour to make herself different for her proposal - which kinda showed her eagerness to please others despite her own preference. Then she got to harvard and she dressed like a peacock but was not given any respect by her classmates or teachers. She eventually dialed down her clothing colour to more neutral and professional black, all the way to when assisting in Callaghan's case. Almost as if she was dialling herself down consciously in order to gain respect from others. But when she realised it never worked to begin with, she switched back to her bubblegum pink clothing as if she was done trying to impress others

At my show, it the art classes there were more students in the science and economics categories than in the strictly art ones.
What clothing articles are flattering on you need knowledge to be in harmony with your body etc. Even sleevelength or skirt tightness make a world of difference.
And there arent any clear cut rules, so much vague stuff that you just kinda have to know and have a feeling for in the moment.
Even by deviding bodies in like 14 categories there are still so much outlier, so you have to know everything for each specific trait and each combination of traits.
Dressing yourself stylefully is already an art on it's own, let alone MAKING clothes, let alone making clothes etc that you want to SELL.

I love the fact that she is so feminine ans she’s also blonde, but the writers didn’t make her character stupid or mean, because that’s how people excpect feminine girls to be. She is feminine but she’s a girlboss. She is the true definition of “beauty and brains“

Its true. Im blonde and I can admit I am naturally beautiful, and i feel like every time I am the new girl at a job people are always so standoffish & weird towards me. Ive been told by multiple ppl they thought I would be a stuck up B word and stupid, but they were totally wrong. Talk about pretty privilege. Everyone I meet automatically hates me.

@@Boudicaisback You really shouldn’t take serious the opinion of people to judge someone’s intelligence by their hair color. Go prove them wrong girl, I know can do it, I believe in you

I watched this movie for the first time yesterday and was pleasantly surprised by just how feminist it was. Telling girls that they don’t need to change their personality to be strong is much better than writing female characters who’s only trait is “my dad taught me how to fight”.

My mom used to show me this movie because she wanted me to be just like Elle growing up. Now this is our favorite movie to watch together and she taught me I don't have to give up my femininity to be a strong, independent woman.

I wholeheartedly love Elle, especially because she’s shown to be emotional, but also smart and strong. Sometimes it seems like being emotional is portrayed as bad, but it’s not. Elle proved that while you may need time for a good cry every now and then, you can also prove someone innocent in court. Vote for Elle!

I’m convinced that if Legally Blonde was made today, Warner’s girlfriend would be the likable character and Elle would be the villain. Modern feminism has made us look at femininity negatively and it’s sad. A female can be both intelligent and feminine. It’s not like it’s hard 🙄❤️‍🔥

If it was made today Elle would be forced to wear sneakers and act edgy and mysterious, drink beer with the guys and be rude to everyone (but it's ok cuz she's not fEmiNinE)
