- INOV8 TRAILFLY SPEED review - first run and first impressions. The other week I took the new Trailfly from INOV8 out on the trails of Cornwall for its first run. I was really impressed with the changes that INOV8 had made and I had a great time running around Tehidy woods. In today's video we are taking a look at the Trailfly's lighter, more racy brother, the Trailfly Speed. On first impressions the two shoes looked very similar but I was surprised with how different the Trailfly Speed felt out on the trails compared to the Trailfly. Thanks for the review Loyd, as a runner with wide feet and often frustrated brands don’t do shoes that work for me I’ve my Trailfly Speed. Comfortable for me and the ground feel suits my taste in shoes. I also run in zero drop which I like a lot.
Glad Inov-8 are making shoes for a broader range or runners and feet. ]
4mm lugs make it a one season (summer) shoe in the UK. 5mm on the older trailfly models is only an extra 1mm but makes them so much more versatile overall!

For info, the Standard width option is coming to this model, in parity with the regular Trailfly. They mentioned this in one of their recent marketing emails.
The lovechild of an Altra and a Hoka trail runner. Hilarious & looks about right
So i've been running in a 7 in the speeds for a few months. Took me ages to decide between 6.5 and 7s. Settled on the 7 but there is definitely a bit of foot roll due to the width. I ordered the 6.5 again just to double check size and 6.5 are definitely too small. I need an in-between size! I've settled on ordering extra insoles and im going to wear 2 insoles in the 7 to see if it stops the foot roll. Really like the shoe. The roll is just a pain.
I definitely see the resemblance but hopefully it doesn't run like a Hoka or an Altra shoe. But it did 😃 Im sitting here with a feeling of a need to order every new Inov8 shoe, they really look interesting. Actually I just ordered the Mudtalon. Will you be testing that one too?
Did you compare the weight to the standard Trail fly or the wide Trail fly? The better comparison is probably the wide foot model as that's what it's sized against. I have a wide foot so Inov8's new sizing is great for me.
Keen to try the new INOV8 for the wider toe box as Altra uppers just aren't robust enough. The standard looks like an older Salomon X Ultra and the Speed like an Altra Superior or something. 😂
I feel like inov 8 and Topo are very similar. I love Topo so I might give these a try. I’m hoping Topo takes their speedy pebax Cyclone 2 shoe into a trail version.
I've been running in the new trailfly for a few weeks now and I must say it's a delight to run in. I went for the wider toe but for me it was perfect (compare4d to the normal crunch inov8 do for me). Oddly, it reminded me of the rocklites of old for feel, but with far more grip and comfort. Great shoes.
Hi, given the wider toe box did you size up? I usually have to size up by half because of the toe box (rather than the length) but maybe I won’t need to do that?
@@amandaball7116 I kept to my normal size and it fits great. I think I could probably have gone for 1/2 a size up for better comfort.
So basically I went with my "Asics" size running shoes of 9.5, where normally that on inov8 would be sardine toes.
@@FellUpAndDown interesting thanks. I’ve just had a reply from Inov-8 who suggested for length if I usually size up then continue to as the length shouldn’t have changed. But then I’ve heard some reviews saying they seem to be more ‘true to size’ compared to normal running shoe length so sizing up may not be needed in this model. So hard to know and pretty important when they are so expensive. I did also suggest to Inov-8 that if we buy direct from them they could offer a free trial period like Brooke’s and HOKA do. I’d pay full RRP to have a 30 day run trial.

Hi Loyd, thanks for the review, have you ever run in the hoka torrent series? I’m looking for this feel but with a bigger toe box. Would either of these shoes or any alternatives you know of be a good option? (Or can anyone else help??) thanks
I have run a lot of miles in the Hoka Torrent and Torrent 2. I’d say the Torrent has a bit more cushioning than the TRAILFLY SPEED, I’d say the TRAILFLY is more like the Torrent 👍

Is the weight coming from the Graphine rubber? Maybe Inov8 should be looking at a Graphine grip lite base, similar to Vibram.
I dare say the rubber on the outsole has a lot to do with Rob. The outsole on any running shoe is always going to be one of the heaviest components 👍🙂
It’s just a shame that the colour options are hideous. There’s no scope for them bringing an all black colour (or even their signature green/orange colours).
What is the deal with that lace length? One of my pet hates is overly long laces that end up flapping about everywhere.

For anyone coming from old Inov-8 models please note the new fits are narrower than the old ones. The old normal fit is equivalent to the new wide fit.

Have you actually run in these? It’s funny how you’ve left this exact comment on all three of my latest Inov8 reviews? Have you tried all three models? I actually found the TRAILFLY SPEED to be one of the widest Inov8 shoes I’ve ever run in, in fact too wide for my foot shape. To say the old narrow fit is the equivalent to the new wide fit is just ridiculous, that’s really not the case! 🤔
no i've not run in the speed, just the normal trailfly and mudtalon so i dont know if the speed fits any different. i left the comments as i like your channel and thought it would be useful for other people to know my personal experience with the new fit. as i said in another comment Inov-8 replied to my question confirming that the new fit is narrower before i bought the new trailfly and mudtalon. trying it on back to back with the G300 - my toes touch both sides of the toe box in the new model immediately and rub straight away, i have a few mm space in the G300 and ran 8 marathons and 5 ultras in them last year with not a single blister. The wide mudtalon fits the same as the G300 and i get no rubbing at all. You've mentioned you have narrower feet so maybe you naturally have a bit more wiggle room?@@Run4Adventure
I’ve worn inov8 since they first started. The new models are much wider than the old ones e.g. wider than terraultra 260, trailtalon 250, trailtalon 275, x-treme 220 etc. I still have these models and the insoles are narrower than the trailfly (wide) and trailfly speed (wide). I also have the f-fly gym shoe in standard fit and the insole is the same size and shape as Altra escalante 2.5 insole. Just for reference for anyone interested in the new lineup of shoe

Wide fit only - seems odd.
They do look a bit cheap
Tried the new mud tallons , got blisters much prefered the old mudclaw in every way. No interest in these, they look awful as well. Dont like where inov8 have gone with new branding.
Agree new colour ways and designs are awful! I tried the Mudtalon speeds in nasty yellow and they caked badly 👎
