I loved seeing SkekSo so fleshed our in this series. He is an interesting character indeed, but I don’t feel bad for him.

Neither do I, because he is heartless and selfish. I know that’s the point though.
I loved it when he said to Mother Aughra that he would never be dust. Completely foreshadowed his death. Great video!

Kade Marsee when you die you crumble to ashes if you aren’t preserved. Same concept though.
That line pretty much summed up his entire character: Arrogance, anger, fear, and denial of reality.

He was only in the movie briefly, at the very begining, but they managed to integrate him into the series as the Skeksis's leader PERFECTLY.
Gotta say, in terms of "Evil Rulers", skekSo is one of my favorites. He may not be an evil genius - or even a competent leader - but he certainly knows how to instill fear in his underlings. Whenever he speaks, *everyone* pays attention. He's also definitely the most evil of the Skeksis - even more evil than the Chamberlain and the Hunter.
I feel like he had a dark badassness to him. It draws you to him
I would say he’s more competent than other big bads! He made an empire that lasted nearly a millennium and kept an awful lot of misdeeds underwraps until the later years. Without a doubt the most evil skeksis, even when other skeksis showed minuscule amounts of reason or decency he’d shut that shit down himself.

Twisted character...power hungry beast! That notwithstanding though, I think he "cared" for the Skeksis in that he wanted them to be able to live forever because that means he will live forever. His wants and needs are always the most important and trump everyone else's.
Damn with they way you put his story out there, it makes me feel like Age of Resistance barely scratches the surface of back story
What did you expect? They're the Skeksis, some of the most sadistic, nasty, over-the-top fantasy villains in history. Digging too hard into their life stories would lead to some pretty sick stuff.
Jason Isaacs is the best Emperor voice ever played.

SkekSo is one, if not my all time, favorite Skeksis out of all of them. While only appearing in one scene and died in the exact same scene, he gave such an aura that his followers had jumped when he snapped at the Chamberlain. Imagine my surprise when I found out that the Emperor was actually very benevolent during his early reign. But his fear came to pass, as the Skeksis Emperor literally turned to dust.

@@DreamfastwithMe also I loved how you described the Emperor's fear "if he could not be heal while he was alive, what level of Hell would he end up in the afterlife?" It painted quite a picture for me.
Yeah, brief as his time was, you could tell by how the other Skesis were around him that he had a commanding presence before he fell ill. Even the Garthim Master commanded they all bow to him, despite the fact he was weak and easy pickings. That speaks quite a bit about SkekSo's rule.

Skekgra the Heretic is definitely my favorite character in the series, possibly my favorite character of all time!
He such a cool villain. Even in the movie when there's almost literally nothing left of him, he holds onto his moxie until the bitter end. Snatching his scepter back from the Chamberlain and snarling "I am still emperor!" with his last labored breath is like the dark version of King Viserys making his power walk in House of the Dragon.

AOR made me understand the Skeksis they simply just wanted to stay themselves instead of giving it up and rejoining the mystics and feared what might await them if they died if anything awaited them. We all fear the unknown and I would also want to live forever and would have
The Emperor's deeds were vile, and I do not agree with what he did. But can any of us honestly say that we don't empathize with where he was coming from?

I sympathize with the Emperor. Who cares if he drained some annoying, minuscule pseudo elves.
A villain I say is on par with others such as Megatron, Smaug, and even all the Disney villains.
And Bill cipher and Tywin Lannister.

And Emperor Palpatine. They're kind of similar when you think about it. They were benevolent rulers and then revealed to be evil, cruel, manipulative, power hungry, and both sought to cheat death to continue ruling over all. In case you don't know, in the Expanded Universe, Palpatine used the Dark Side to transfer his spirit into clone bodies of himself.
Hell with the exception of the God Emperor of Dune. I cant think of a more successful overlord.

The scene where skekso talks about dreaming is my favorite scene in the series
that scene where the Emperor talks to General (RIP, can be anywhere now) really made me root for Skesis so much. I am so glad that the AOR series explains where they are coming from with this obsession with immortality, in the original movie it was more like 'and here we have these dreadful monster we all wanna see die'... so glad the dynamics have changed.
You know, I never thought SkekSo the Emperor looked creepy or scary in the show, but when I saw that figurine made by Weta Workshop it gave me nothing but goosebumps.

I am so glad I found your channel as well as "Dark Crystal Conjunction", it has really been nice to feed that obsession with all these informative and well-done videos. You put a lot of research and effort into these and so you know they are appreciated, it will certainly help to grow more fans and inform them on the expansive mythology of Thra.
I was extremely obsessed with Dark Crystal and Labyrinth in my early teens. Now with AOR my obsession has grown again and I'm reminded why I loved those movies so much.
I just finished the show and honestly it was brilliant, I'm usually very cynical about things I love being brought again, but AOR was a great surprise. I'm so happy Netflix not only allowed them to use puppetry/classic effects, but wanted them to and encouraged them. Even if we don't get a S2 (which I hope we do) but even if not I'm thankful to them for letting us experience a 10 hour prequel. Lisa Henson, the producers, stage builders, sound engineers, the puppeteers, animators, sculptors, the author of the YA books, the camera men, cinematographers...just everyone did a fantastic job.

What little we know about the Urskeks before they were divided, and even before they came to Thra, is tantalizingly tragic. They passed themselves off as enlightened superior beings to Thra's native races, but in truth they were exiles, hated and shunned by their own kind for crimes they could not bear to talk about. So desperate were they for absolution that they tried to burn away the parts of themselves that caused them to sin, an attack against their own nature which failed and caused the Great Division. We have the barest hint of what skekSo was talking about when he mentioned the torment in his past.
As for what torment might lie before them, it is even more terrifying than the human conception of hell. Creatures in this universe return to their homeworld after death, but where does that leave those exiled from their world? Thra won't take them, and their distant native planet won't take them either. Their fate would be the most uniquely desolate among any creatures who have ever lived in this cosmos.

If the emperor's role and will was paramount, then why did they have a ceremony for determining who gets to lead? That obelisk they bash with swords in the movie look well-worn.
Trial By Stone could be utilized for settling all kinds of disputes.

Successfully organized two races into a far reaching empire. Maintained control for a thousand trine. Plus kept his power despite being surrounded by an entire group of backstabbers.
Extinguished the rebellion against him.
Skesis was way more successful than Palpatine Voldemort or many other fiction villians. Hell with exception of the God Emperor of Dune himself. I cant think of a greater villianous overlord.

0:08 to 0:23 SkekSo and all the other Skeksis viewed the Great Division as a victory, because they (as the dark halves) were free of remorse. The show really showed that the Skeksis fear two things above all else: death and reuniting with the UrRu to become UrSkeks again.
It makes me wonder if the Skeksis fear death itself, or the fact that they don’t know what happens to them when they die. I find myself wondering this about everyone. But the Skeksis are a special case, because since they know the Great Division tore them apart. If they die in their divided forms, would they reunite or be rent further asunder?

SkekSo was initially that creepy dying relative that everyone had to tolerate until he croaked to me- in addition to being that subject of the really nightmarish, rotting death. Yet, the others (except SkekSil who doesn’t actually respect/fear anyone) showed respect and fear to this dying buzzard. What kind of being was he in his prime to invoke such fear?
The prequel answers this by having him being revealed as an authority that was much more pragmatic, introspective on the subject of mortality and having a completely different type of combat than the others. He also didn’t need the overall extravagant hunch robes of the others, he wore a more regal attire, that also demonstrates his ability to assert or combat at any moment in spite of looking less massive.
I like him in Age of Resistance. had a Lord Zedd vibe to him

Yes, good point, thanks for adding that! And i wouldn't say its info, its more reading into what skekSo actually believed. He feared the afterlife because he couldn't make himself whole again. And with all his evil deeds, he must have been worried about what the energies of universe would do to his soul in the end.

Ok, Stupid question time but where does all this info come from? I loved the Dark Crystal as a kid and really enjoyed the series on netflix but would like to get into the graphic novels or stories or wherever all of this is? Can someone point me in the right direction? I would like to start at the beginning :) Thanks
There is a 2 Manga series that happens pre The Dark Crystal. Unknown but think it falls before Restistance too. Also 2- 12 set series of comics after. The comics first set of 12 involve King Jen and Queen Kira. The 2nd set is long after.
I found them yesterday on eBay just typing in Dark Crystal Comic and Dark Crystal Manga. One set is The power of The Dark Crystal.

Sure, that sounds very interesting. Because The Captain (skekSa) actually has massive beast very similar to a dragon!
I always saw the Skesis as being very Dragon like myself given on how they look and act so f there isn't any on Thra the Skesis kinda do come close as being dragons themselves.
Watching the skeksi's, particularly Skekso, slowly become progressively more villainous and evil was a masterplay by the producers of the netflix series. Villains who just begin in a series as awful and morally non-existent beings come off as terribly boring and are like cardboard plot devices.
By making the skeksi's start out as somewhat begrudgingly kind in the series but nevertheless showing at least at first a core of basic decency to their attitudes about the gelfling and what course they intended to go down on this added enourmous depth to them as villains, truly making them relatable in an interesting way unlike the hopelessly cliched tragic villain trope which tries to psychologically force relateability.
It seems to me that the Dark Crystal contains elements from Dante where the Skeksis are synonymous with the 7 deadly sins and other sins that are by nature the worst of evils.

He only thought he was immortal. That was a self-subscribed image. The experiments on the Darkening caused him to begin to perish.

I never understood the gelfling looked at them loke gods they should have been honest and said can they bring some volunteers who would help them stay alive so they may guard the crystal most of the gel fillings seem them as gods they would help
If rian hadn’t witnessed what they were actually doing that might have worked, the heretic and wanderer also basically whistleblowed their whole operation which discredited them.
skekSo died because his mystic/urRu counterpart, urSu, willingly sacrificed himself to make it so, in order to create turmoil among the Skeksis.
The darkening was killing SkekSo which also affected his Mystic.

This is a very interesting topic. Because yes, you're right, urSu did sacrifice himself. But remember, even without the creation of the Darkening yet, we don't know why his health is deteriorating. All the other urRu are fine except for him. That's where the Darkening comes in. So urSu became weak because of what skekSo was doing to himself, then he allowed himself to die instead of hanging on. If he hung on for longer, skekSo might have been able to somehow attend a Ceremony of the Sun and heal himself. It's a two-way thing. But thank you for bringing that up!
It's like I said, urSu allowed himself to die so that skekSo would also perish, thereby creating turmoil among the Skeksis
