Welcome back to another Skeksis biography video! Today i will be covering the tragic tale of skekTek The Scientist.

While I love this analysis (given that Skektek is my favorite skeksis), I'd just like to add to the scene where Aughra is being drained, because Skektek looks to the Emperor before replying to Aughras mentions of them being friends once. It shows that, even then, he was still after the approval of the Skeksis around him, to the point where he would forsake his own feelings and opinions just for that approval and acceptance.
Honestly, I feel really bad for skekTek. He's basically a weak nerd who sided with the popular kid in hopes of being accepted, but he ended up more miserable than anything else. skekTek became my second favorite skeksis during the AoR because I think he's more relatable than the others are.
I like to think in death all the skeksis and urru reunite into their true forms. It's both peace and punishment because they'll regain their ability to feel remorse over the horrible things they've done.

He was one of the few Skeksis that had a lighter side, which probably means his urru counterpart had a darker one

I think DwM should cover a video theory what would happen to them in the afterlife. Like the skesis well experience a dante's inferno situation so they may understand their wrong doings and feel remorse for them, while the uru well go on a spiritually path to gain full knowledge of who they were and become one at the end of their travels.
I feel like skeptic when it comes to my dad and his side of the family.
I've always felt skekTek secretly was at least open to the idea of rejoining with his Uru counterpart. He was different than the others. One of the more, if not most tragic of the Skeksis. Shame he died before the crystal was healed.
An even bigger shame he fell so far in life, being the technician behind the extermination of the Gelfling race.
I agree. The fact that SkekTek and UrTih died only minutes or hours before the Great Conjunction is tragic. This made their deaths arguably the saddest of all.
Man my boy SkekTek just wanted to be liked. I guess his final experiment, though he never intended to test it, was to see what would happen if he passed away

They are not creatures of Thra is Mother Augra implies that they have no after life unlike the other creatures of Thra that return to Thra upon there death.
@@williamhiers1280 In an old comic that was an official sequel to the Dark Crystal they do have an afterlife, however they are still separate.
The MC apparently gets taunted into depression by Skek Sil, but his Mystic equivalent helps him out of his funk.
While the other skeksis just hang around, he literally finds a way to make them immortal. But they still don't take him seriously, they ignore him, abuse him, and still talk about him like he's useless (Even though he just made them immortal). He's also surprisingly naive. The Chamberlain pretends to be his friend, and then backstabs him cruelly. As socially awkward as he is, he doesn't fit in with the other skeksis, and doesn't have any friends apart from the animals in his laboratory, which he actually cares for (For a skeksis, to actually show signs of empathy is quite the exception). Even though he's rather submissive with the other skeksis, without him their ending would have come a lot sooner.
*I thought this was a great portrayal for the "genius" skeksis. Some of his lines really touched a soft spot in me. He's a skeksis, which means that he's basically the evil instincts of someone, but I still feel he didn't deserve such a sad ending. It would have been cool to see his mystic twin. One of my favorite characters, great job creators and Mark Hamill.*
Which line in particular struck a chord with you? I always liked his crazed monologue to the gruenaks before attacking them. I can relate to all that pent up frustration and anger over his comrades' ingratitude.
@@samrizzardi2213 The whole abuse thing was so realistic for a "kids" series. The isolation, the animals... (let's say I was bullied by an entire school-not even kidding-when I was six and mayhaps started talking to birds. 🤣)
Honestly, I think it would suck to be Mystic to him. Mostly imagine that you’re just chilling, and your eye went missing.
I noticed how kind he was in the beginning of the series compared to how it progressed and the movie, he & SkekMal are my favorites. Out of all the Skeksis, those two deserved to become whole more than those who did.
Atleast skekShod who had a tragic past too did and the funny ones skekSil, skekAyuk and skekEkt
I’ve always seen SkekTek more as a tragic character rather than a creature born from the evil of a celestial being. Most of his actions seem to try to win the approval of the other Skeksis rather than extend his life span or gain political power. Unfortunately, all of his efforts are met with criticism, abuse, and an increased hunger for more power from the other Skeksis. It feels like his efforts being met with such hostility and little praise drove him mad as opposed to him being born mad during the great divide. In other words, unlike the other Skeksis, nurture made him evil, not nature. It’s especially tragic that the ones who drove him to madness and forced him to do such evil actions were reunited with their other halves while SkekTek perished.
As sympathetic as his character mightve been originally he was truly one of the most cruel and evil of the Skeksis. He mercilessly mocked his victims before draining him. When the other skeksis were in battle he abused the podlings so bad that they actually protested him (think about how whipped and obedient they were at that point). The way he killed the gruenaks too was sickening. It doesnt matter what your origin is. If you let your past make you evil youre still evil.
I think his brutal abuse of the podlings and killing of the gruenaks was born out of frustration because of all the abuse he himself had suffered from the other skeksis. Had he not been so brutally mistreated, be probably would had been a much gentler character. When Skekso threatened to crush one of the caged creatures in his lab, he looked really distressed and really seemed to care. He probably viewed some of those creatures as pets or "friends" (the emperor's words) rather than just creatures to experiment on. He also seemed to look sorry for Aughra. He's probably the only skeksis whith any spark of empathy left.
Do you think deep down skektek secretly regretted doing things like corrupting the crystal, draining the gelfling, and not trying stop the darkening.
Absolutely, thats what made him so much more human than the others.
He was definitely aware that what he was being forced to do was unsustainable.
SkekTek was always my favourite back in the movie because I always thought he looked so cool as a kid.
But now I've watched the new Netflix series, never thought I could love a character more. I just adore SkekTek, I honestly believe without a doubt that good still exists somewhere in him, it just takes the right person to get it out. ❤️

I will not be happy until I see a picture of younger Skektek and Mother Augra hugging it out.
SkekTek is they only Skeksis that I feel sorry for instead of being appreciated for his talents he was abused just for being the weakest and what makes me fell more sorry for him is that he never became one with UrTih again.
Now having seen Joker finally last week, I can't help but draw certain comparisons between the two. And not just because Mark Hamil is the most brilliant voice actor to have ever voiced The Joker, and happens to voice SkekTek. Their stories are similar. Just trying to get through life, but it keeps throwing curve balls and he does what he think is best but ends up committing horrible atrocities. The fact that he seemed to want to drain as few Gelfling as possible, and was worried about the possible negative outcomes of what he truly saw as abusing The Crystal. Those two facts just make me sympathise with his character more. Like was mentioned about the Gruenaks, I feel like he did what he did to them not out of a feeling of "this is what the Emperor SkekSo would want", but rather I feel like he felt betrayed by them, by them trying to escape. It's sad because if things were different, I could have seen him ending up on the other side. But we all know from the movie, they there is no happy ending for him.

Wow I would’ve never thought I’d feel bad for any of the skesis but I do for the Scientist. I can’t help but to feel bad after the way you narrated his story. On a side note Netflix is a POS for coming at you like that
I agree on both of your points. Growing up with my favourite cartoon being Batman: The Animated Series, the fact that Mark Hamil (who did the Joker's voice in that cartoon and a few of the animated movies) also voices SkekTek is a bonus point right away. As well as the fact that, as you said, I felt bad for SkekTek. Mark's brilliant voice acting and the fact that he seems to actually want to drain as few Gelfling as possible, and is worried about the possible repercussions and negative outcomes made me feel terrible for him. The smartest in the room, sort of like The Scrollkeeper... but without the bite. I sympathise with him, like how Joaquin Phoenix made me sympathise with The Joker. Despite the horrible acts both committed, you see how they got there.
SkekShod also had it rough. He was against the Skeksis monarchy from the beginning and was beaten for it. He later developed a speech impediment which caused him so much shame he stopped talking altogether and became a hoarder.
What do you mean about Netflix being a POS?
I agree. I feel bad for SkekTek, and all of the other UrRu and Skeksis pairs that died. The Great Division was not intentional, and it essentially made the UrSkeks twice as vulnerable because of how the two halves are still linked even though divided.
Skektek is my favourite as he's so unique and I feel bad for him but deep down he does have a caring nature and just needs a friend or someones help
I think his compassionate side really showed when his pet (the bird-like caged creature) was almost crushed to death as a means to force the Scientist to give an answer on how many Gelfling they would need to drain. He didn't want to answer that, both because he wanted the others to understand that abusing the crystal was just a short-term solution that would ultimately make things far worse, and because he probably feared what they would do to him if his calculations were incorrect. In the end, though, he relented and called out a number just to save his pet. I somehow like to imagine that the pet was his only confider and that he would sometimes talk to it rather than to himself while working, and take it out of its cage to pet it when he was feeling overly stressed.
Well friends, unfortunately my clips from Age of Resistance that i use in these videos has come to an end. Netflix finally decided to start striking me for giving them free promotion. Awesome! There was an unofficial channel that had clips from the movie and the show uploaded and it disappeared a little while ago. I would think your use of the clips falls under fair use. It’s a really annoying thing to have to deal with, but I don’t think your video quality is much affected. You’re still providing us with all this awesome information, and I think that keeps us quite content. Keep up the great work, hope Netflix isn’t causing you too much trouble.
The *only* SkekSis that ever achieved anything significant at the entire skeksis history. He is the only skeksis other than the garthirm master/general that ever truly worked. I would've said he didn't deserve to be burned to death in lava; but his brutal slaughter to those mechanic servants was far too harsh

Most of them worked to some extent. One designed and made clothing, one cooked, one kept records, one lived of the land/hunted. The scientists probably worked harder then most tho
@@theeye8276 Aye. He was basically the Back Bone of the Skeksis with his research and experiments.
The some of the other skeksis were lazy to be sure but i wouldn’t go as far to say they never worked. I would say at least the more violent. Ones like skekung, skekvar and skekmal kept themselves busy killing stuff. The ornementalist as insane as his methods were went to a lot of effort making those frilly ass cloaks for the rest of the skeksis. Collector looked like they were slacking but they’re clearly not very healthy anyway.
I love him 'cause he's voiced by mark hamill, mostly. also, I like his struggle of being the smartest man in the room, but also the weakest and most prone to abuse
edit: I forgot to mention: I forgot he had a cybernetic arm in the movie. can't wait to see how that happens!

A tragic Skesis who was bullied to becoming a mad man, as well died in fire. Never to join with his brothers when they United.
SkekTek has to be one of my favourite skeksis in terms of character and backstory. He’s so prevalent in the movie and series, but yet he rarely seems to get the spotlight. Really great video, I learned a whole lot!

Poor skekTek, he's such a reasonable, understandable guy. I feel so sorry 4 how he got treated, that's why I designed a daughter 4 him 2, and an idea of having a close relationship between both of them. He would understand his daughter's feelings, and what she wanted.

Well keep in mind the slave master lost his hand, but his Urru only lost a finger, i’m just saying that the magic in this world is far from consistent and the urru side of things mean little to any plot
urTih was an alchemist. Maybe he grew a new eye in a vat or something like that.

I like to think that skekTek's status among the Skeksis somewhat improves once his close ally, the Garthirm Master skekUng, becomes the new emperor. I believe under the protection of skekUng as emperor, skekTek would've been given more respect by the other Skeksis before his unfortunate death.

1:01 , 2:20 , 3:14 and 5:14 SkekTek perhaps deserved the most sympathy of all. Despite being a Skeksis and inevitably evil as such, he didn’t seem to actually enjoy hurting others as much as the other Skeksis. SkekTek mostly seemed to just do as he was told to avoid beatings.
7:14 , 7:43 , 8:20 and 8:44 Among all the UrRu/Skeksis pairs that perished, UrTih and SkekTek were perhaps the saddest. As many fans know, if only SkekTek hadn’t plunged to his death and taken UrTih with him during the film, they’d have been reunited just minutes later. Then exactly half of the 18 UrRu/ SkekSis pairs would’ve been reunited and returned to their true form. But sadly, only 8 of the 18 pairs were fortunate enough to become whole again.
We can only hope that the UrRu and Skeksis pairs become one again when they die, which I would imagine they do since their souls are still linked as one. Hopefully the 10 pairs that perished all found peace in one way or another after death, especially since the Great Division was basically just a failed experiment.

Ok SkekTek is the youngest child fighting for the attention and let’s be honest he created an entire race of powerful warriors he should have been praised he could have turned all those powerful warriors on to them
This one left me with a heavy feeling of melancholy. What's so interesting about SekTek is that his story about being abused and growing a complex is so relatable in real life. He once did what he loved but suffered and eventually lost interest. He eventually found an unhealthy outlet (like most of us do) and became bitter and dangerous just like the rest of them. Unlike the others he actually cared about Auhgra and his little critter friends. Until he suffered at the abuse of the other skesis.

How did his Mystic counterpart survive all the experiments SkekTek did to himself. I mean he replace his jugular vein with a tube, but why didn't that kill him, his counterpart wouldn't have had the components or knowledge to fix him self, so he should have died, which would have also killed SkekTek.
Very true, but if skekTek didn't die, neither would urTih, no matter what he did. It wouldn't be like urTih was experiencing surgery, he would only be changed suddenly.
The most important and history-defining skeksis of them all! SkekTek created and refined the process of essence draining and created the Garthim. Without him, the skeksis would have died off much, much sooner. The most pivotal moments in their history are directly influenced and related to him and his work. Yes, WORK. He was one of the extremely few skeksis that actually got off his ass and did something with his talents. Just imagine how the history of Thra would have been different if he was the first skeksis killed. No other skeksis life had such an impact.
Honestly Skektek is one of the few in the show that saw the bigger picture and understood the concepts of give and take, cause and effect, AND consequences. If he had a higher rank, he probably would have found a lasting more permanent solution. Or come to the realization that they don't belong and need to be joined with their other halves.
The more I look at Skektek, the more I see a resemblance to humanity and Skeksis 🤔

People forget that while Mark Hamill is indeed a seminal voice actor, he was not inside the heavy costume with his arm over his head for long periods of time. That would be British puppeteer Olly Taylor.

Since Aughra remained in the lab until the Conjunction in the movie after her capture, I can't help but wonder if Aughra did tell SkekUng that Tek was dead from falling down the shaft, tho most likely wouldn't want to believe her.
Ung did want Tek executed in his period of paranoia, so he honestly wouldn't give a shit.

How come skekTek is the weakest Skeksis when skekOk is way tinier and scrawnier?

He may be smaller, but he was a vicious fighter, as seen during the second battle of stone in the wood

Yet he was turned away from battle for... reasons (I think skekSo was being honest when he suggested skekTek couldn't be risked, but was incapable of doing it in a non-douchey manner). I just don't buy that skekOk isn't physically weaker than the Scientist. The weird thing is they're both intellectual types who ought to be equally despised by their cohorts, but only skekTek is "the nerd." SkekOk is tolerated even though his particular specialty is less useful to the Skeksis than is skekTek's.

Mark HAMILL wasn’t great as SkekTek’s voice but the puppeteer and character overall were enough to make me like him as much as I did with him in the film.
For Age of Resistance, he was puppeteered by Olly Taylor. For the original film he was puppeteered _and_ voiced by Steve Whitmire.

It's a pity the Gelfling were never cunning enough to exploit the Skeksis divisions. SkekTek in particular could have been manipulated against his fellow Skeksis if some Gelfling had tried to boost his ego.

I agree with most comments here and I idolise scientist characters. I just want to add that I like how different the Skeksis are. Sciencetist is an abused genius who wants recognition and any of his warnings and attempts at moderation fall on dead ears. Chamberlain is the best politician and only pushed the blame on sciencetist to save himself. General wants to brute force his way through life. Emperor has willpower and a vision of grandeur and will just push aside any obstacles and doubts, which works even on what sciencetist is capable of.
Now I kinda wish that it went different for skektek in the movie like he starts talking to mother augra again and it rekindled the connection they had and made him have a change of heart.
I have a theory that some of the skeksis and mystics are part of thra in some form. Skektek had some of his essence drained by the crystal itself meaning a part of him is now part of thra while skekmal manifested aughra which could mean part of him is in aughra who is also part of thra. Skekmal and skektek being favored by thra itself as skektek was good friends with aughra and skekmal lived off of thra.
I feel sad for him

Yeah for all the skeksis and urru that did manage to become one again, had to come to terms with what their darker halves did. They pretty much committed mass genocide and nearly destroyed the planet. It makes one wonder what happened to them after they returned to their original home.

I think skektek,skekshod,and skeksa have very sad back story's. One lost her friends,the other was swacked on the head,and the last was given a peeper beetle
Skektec is my favorite maybe because science was my favorite subject in school and I feel I relate to him the most
