If it's any consolation, it's not like we absolutely need clips from the movie/show every time. Showing stills of those moments seems far more effective to me. Incidentally, once you're through with the clans, any thought on more eccentric denizens of Thra? I'm kinda interested in the sudden Fizzgig explosion and wonder if the Firelings are fully canon.
I never knew Skektek had a friend in Skekung, I wonder if that will be brought up if a Season 2 happens. It'd be nice to have someone appreciate The Scientist's work despite his strength as a warrior contrasting Skektek's lack of it.
I swear Chamberlain really makes his own demons 😅

I really hope Michael Kilgariff is up for voicing skekUng again. He's been quite active in the Doctor Who audiobook spinoffs, so it shouldn't be a problem for him, despite his age.
I agree no one but Michael should be voicing him. Despite being like 83 why shouldn’t he do it? Rumor has it he’s willing! (plus he’s a guest at a UK con so if he can attend that still he can still voice act!)
Clancy Brown, Andy Serkis, or Gerard Butler are good picks too. But if Kilgariff is set to reprise his role, we can give him a chance.

@@brycecarroll9665 I like the canidates so far. I think they should watch the film first to study. Not to necessarily imitate the original voice, but to replicate the same fury, imposing, merciless, and power that made the character SkeUng.

I want to see him rip apart a Gelfling with his bare hands
skekUng was always my favorite skeksis. I love characters who are the strongest of their group and utilize that brute force to their advantage. I also like how, despite his temperament, skekUng was always loyal to the emperor, choosing to bow to him even on his deathbed and not make a move for the throne until after he died (unlike skekSil). He also shows a great amount of honor when he chooses to spare skekSil's life after winning the Trial by Stone, despite how much he hated him, and was even willing to let skekSil back into the castle after he proved his worth.
This just makes me really want to see the Garthim Wars at some point. Maybe not full scale in season 2, but perhaps by season 3. May just have to watch through the show again in the meantime, not that I mind 💜
Yeah, seeing the Garthim arrive at the end of season 1 got me all amped at seeing more of them in action beyond what we know from the movie. Considering the Gelfling are apparently masters of wire fu now, I bet a battle between a legion of those guys and a pack of maybe six or seven Garthim would be really fun to watch. Granted, it's not going to end well for the Gelfling in the long run, but who knows? Maybe we're watching an alternate universe on Netflix and someone invents a more effective Garthim deterrent than Deet's Force lightning.

I hope the show hasn’t been canceled. I hope we see all the remaining Skeksis, and all the UrRu at least briefly as they got very little screen time on the show and 2 were killed off screen: UrMa and UrSen.
It appears that the Chamberling *dug* his own downfall -- for the second time !
In a post in one of my Dark Crystal groups, someone suggested Robert Englund, the actor who played Freddy Kruger, would be perfect for the voice of the Gartham Master. I had a feeling he’s much more intelligent then his predecessor when he was called to take SkekVars place, and you my friend confirmed it in this video. I also wanted to point out that he may have been a genuine favorite of SkekSo, this could explain how he was able to become one of the few candidates to gain his title up until his death. That’s my theory.
I love these in-depth looks at the skeksis. Theres so much lore to unpack with each one. Your writing is spectacular and very poetic! Keep up the good work!
Next to Emperor SkekSo, SkekUng is my second favorite Skeksis. I just really like his long armored robe with the carapace having that neat wing mechanism on his back. While not a political mastermind, the Garthim Master made up for it with leadership and raw power. Love you videos, keep them up!

@@canonbehenna612 Thx, but I realized it would be canceled shortly after posting this (it's been 4 years ago, after all :P). From everything I read, it was clearly due to budgetary concerns vs Fan Dislike. Or, specifically, it didn't seem to achieve Netflix's desired viewership vs the budget - and from what I've heard it was their highest-budgeted production to date for any of their products.
So... An entire species had to be destroyed so two muppets could end up in a bed together?

I like him since I saw the movie in childhood . I think it was the voice and his rising armor when mad or excited. I tend to imagine him though in his younger years being far more noble and protective and then as time and age corrupted him like the others became the vicious killer.
Yeah, I like to imagine him being kind of a wandering paladin with dreams of having his adventures sung about for centuries to come, but became disillusioned when the Gelfling ended up fearing rather than idolizing him.
Yes! Good idea and it just makes it more sad. He could easily be admired by a gelfling patron clan like the Sifan with SkekSa but perhaps they were just too fearful of the powerful Skeksis warrior.
@@DragonQueen78 Even more sad if you imagine the emperor laughing at his noble dreams and convincing him (wrongly) that, being from another planet, he will always be distrusted by the ungrateful Gelfling. That would explain why he seems to genuinely hate Gelflings rather than just disrespect them or find them amusing.
YES. SkekSo is almost the SOLE REASON the others became so cruel they are all pretty selfish but he just brings them down because he is such a cruel and truly evil bastard. I truly wish I could find a good chat or forum with fans like you to discuss and ponder such things related to theories of Dark Crystal! :)

Second of all :skekUng is the strongest of skeksis even skekMal the healthiest is not that strong?
SkekUng's commanding voice, sheer strength, pragmatism and cunning (compared to his predecessor especially) endeared him to me. Unlike most hot-headed brute type characters, he's able to keep his cool and act with wisdom when he needs to (such as with how he handled SkekSil), and he doesn't abuse his allies (He got angry at SkekTek, but he didn't beat him like the others might have, and did). It's a huge shame we never got a Season 2 of AoR, where we could've seen a fit, at-his-peak SkekUng wreaking havoc on the Gelflings.
I'd also like to imagine his title prior to becoming the new General and Garthim Master was "the Tormentor": Lines up with his counterpart being a healer.
As I said on the SkekSil video, my fave is Chamberlain, but SkekUng is a fairly effective villain as well. If we view Thra and its inhabitants as analogues of classic myths and storytelling tropes, then the Garthim Master is surely one of the best. Like Ming the Merciless, SkekUng's main role is as the intimidating throne occupier in charge of armed legions, inspiring fear through a booming voice and grand physical gestures. The moment in the original film when he summons the Crystal Bats is one of my favorite bits in the whole franchise, impactfully delivered by Jerry Nelson in a way that made me cheer the first time I recognized his voice in that role (FYI, I'm a huge Count von Count mark and remain astonished I could pick out his voice among a cast I was otherwise unfamiliar with; although Frank Oz's slightly raspy Grover voice for the dying Emperor threw me for a loop too, so go figure). Honestly, I think it's super cool that the Skeksis have two forms of classical villain archetypes at the top of their ranks: the intimidating presence of SkekUng, and the slinky silver-tongued schemer SkekSil. I do like the "Age of Resistance" version of Gourmand with her (his?) eternal head cold, but those former two have always been the best of the worst to me.
Two things:
1. The Skeksis who summoned the Crystal Bats was SkekZok the Ritual Master.
2. The Dying Skeksis Emperor was voiced by Jerry Nelson, just like the Ritual Master. Listen closely and you'll hear Nelson's signature gravel.
Well skekung is very interesting and i do wonder how his updated look would be in the series, since they look so amazing in the series now. But yea Skekung is a rather angry skeksis but not a full on rage machine like SkekGra might have been when he was the Conqourer and not the heratic, tho we do see glimpses of the old SkekGra slip through from time to time. Yet when skekung is strong enough to cut stone then you must be really strong
He’s certainly pretty cool I must say, though I still havemy doubts about him being stronger than skekmal, he was probably one of the most visually interesting skeksis in The first movie with his back feathers judding up.
SkekMal's sword strikes were blocked by both Rian and Ordon. SkekUng's strike shattered a Haakskeekah stone. If he had been the one fighting Rian and Ordon, they would have been turned to paint.
sam rizzardi well The stone was pretty cracked and such by the time he did break it but that is a good point. Skekmals weapons were two one handed blades though while skekungs was a two handed sword, which obviously allows the user more powerful swings.
If Rian and ordon were fighting skekung they would probably be able to doge his heavy swings easier than skekmals in that case anyway.
Show idea: Skektek: Coast to Coast.
I hope we get to see skekUng in the next season of Age of Resistance, it's the perfect time because skekVar is gone (meaning we need a new general) & skekTek has just created the Garthim so the Skeksis are going to need a firm hand to train & command them

Thank you thank you thank you! My absolute favorite character and I'll admit I'm a still a bit miffed that he want in AOR! I have hopes for season 2! That voice and the wiping of spittle on his blade during trial by stone was awesome!
I wish there was a second season of Age of Resistance with SkekUng, SkekNa and SkekSa returning to the castle. I could imagine SkekUng leading the Garthim in person and actively pursuing the Gelflings, like SkekMal in the first season

I think SkekUng was more than, "twice as powerful," as SkekVar. Let's face it! SkekVar was pathetic, dim-witted, and unimpressive.
True, skekvar couldn't face a single gelfling on 1v1 2 times first before tavra later rian while skektek fougth and killed 2 gruenaks at the Same time, that i assumed, are stronger physically than gelflings
But he had a cute pink piggy beak-nose....which is nice.....
Well he was certainly strong, his sword swings could crush a wooden wagon into pieces and he was able to through the chamberlain around pretty easily. His problem was He was too thick headed to block, so a gelfling of great enough skill could easily get past his defenses.
True. SkekVar was almost as fat as SkekAyuk the Gourmand.
I think that is thanks to the Chamberlain, he sabotaged SkekVar's essence ration while the rest of the Skeksis grew strong from theirs, SkekVar remained old and frail, while Scientist has plenty of essence to keep him stronger than those Gruenaks
Probably my favourite Skeksis along with SkekAyuk.
If he's in season 2 of AOR, i think Robert Freddy Krueger Englund should be the voice
That could be a good choice, but what if they went for a less likely choice, like Ben Kingsley, Ryan Dillon (current puppeteer of Elmo from Sesame Street), or Alfred Molina?
And what of Benedict cumberbatch
Robert Englund would be a great choice, interestingly one of his best pals is Mark Hamill who voices SkekTek

The Skeksis that I so want to see in Saisson 2, how he became both Garthim Master and General, how he formed an alliance with the Slave Master and the Scientist, how he became the new rival du Chamberlain and claim the succession of the Emperor's throne. And I want him to be voiced by Jackie Earle Haley, because he plays Grewishka in Alita Battle Angel.

Definitely, but not as athletic. SkekUng managed to slice a Haakskeekah stone in half. SkekMal's blows, while powerful, were blocked by Ordon. If he had struck with the same force skekUng had, he'd have sliced straight through the Gelflings' defences.
If I have one critism of Age of Resistance is that it would have been better if it had SkekUng instead of SkekVar. That way we could have seen a rivalry grow between SkekUng & Skeksil from the beginning that would then culminate in the movie, giving more meaning to the Trial of Stone scene. Now we have to wait till Season 2 (if that ever happens) to see SkekUng interact with the other Skeksis.
He just had this mighty presence his voice and direct personality. Seemed like they all feared him anyway even before he became emperor. Chamerlain stands up to him somewhat but clearly does fear him somewhat

Garnet: I didn't expect the strongest warrior to come here

Lynn: so your the garthim master, the strongest warrior and the much more superior than the general?
skekUng: that's right and I heard of you, the champion of your family, sister of the great and majestic and wise duke but also the wimp

skekUng: will see about that
The two begin and as Lynn is struggling but tries her best while skekUng seams enjoying seeing Lynn trying her best to beat him but to upper hand and with brute strength he lift Lynn up and smack her down at the table and won
skekUng: me the champion!
Everyone stood silence and start to cheered for him as for Lynn she was impressed to know how strong skekUng and respect his loyalty
Lynn: very well skekUng I respect your loyal, although this it's just a headstart I know I can be stronger than you
skekUng: I doubt, that I once lift the crystal castle with my own talons
Lynn: alright have it your way I should be going now, if you want to challenge me again I would be ready

Besides the obvious, my favorite thing about SkekUng is that he and his counterpart UrIm are very fittingly opposite. 4:42 to 5:00 A blood thirsty general and a healer of life are obviously complete and polar opposites.

Well, he was off presumably fighting somewhere during the events of Age of Resistance. Maybe he was the "sheriff", cracking down on banditry. Or maybe he was the "recruiter", being the one responsible for finding and training potential candidates for the Castle Guard.
sam rizzardi SkekVar was the one to find recruits. We don’t know what Ung’s former career was, but I have heard rumors that it was the BeastMaster. Keep in mind, these are only rumors.

I have a feeling that Skekung will be the one that kills Seladon in the next season, Seladon‘s mean, rude, and annoying attitude is nothing compare to Skekung’s stern, mean, ruthless, wrathful, short tempered, brute straight, and violent nature.
Seladon is the most hated character in the dark crystal series, along with Jar Jar Binks, Denethor, Dolores Umbridge, and Joffrey Baratheon
@A dudes thoughts Because her whole redemption story was awful. She undermined the Gelfling resistance from the beginning and was willing to have members of her own species sacrificed to the Skeksis. Heck, when she was taken prisoner, she showed no remorse over her actions and blamed them on Brea. And yet no one holds a grudge against her or holds her accountable.
It would have been so much more interesting if she had been left behind in the castle, and skekTek used her as a component of the Garthim, condemning her to serve her lords forever against her own people.
I would like to see Seladon die by the hands of Skekung, I mean just look at him in the original movie.
I thought this was the most badass skeksis of all of them he literally planned to battle skeksil and yet he won but still he caused damage to all the skeksis he could have listended to skeksil.

My biggest question about SkekUng is what was his original position among the skeksis? I mean they all had their own position so what was his before he became the general and garthim master? Was he just SkekUng the Nothing or something?

I wonder how skekVar and skekUng got along. Were they friends? Were they rivals? Were they enemies? Is there any info on this in the Dark Crystal novels and comics?
I've read them all, and surprisingly they never interact.
I imagine they didn't particularly like each other. SkekVar is a brainless bully who picks on cripples like skekTek, despite what the scientist could offer him. SkekUng made it a point in his power grab to curry the favour of skekTek and skekNa, both of them half-blind amputees.
2 years late replying to this, but seeing as how SkekVar was a straight up bully, I'm guessing he steered a wide path around SkekUng. The reason SkekUng wasn't at the castle during the events of Age of Resistance was basically due to the fact that even the Emperor was cautious of him. Bear in mind, SkekUng was the only Skeksis who SkekMal, The Hunter, actually considered a friend. Apparently they would capture various creatures of Thraa and take turns torturing them to death, devising worse and worse ways to do so. And all the Skesis at the Castle feared the Hunter....even the Emperor didn't really try to tell him what to do. 😮
The Emperor dispatched SkekUng out to the furthest reaches of their empire to maintain control of the furthest provinces. Remember SkekTek saying he thought all the Grunaks had been eradicated? Yeah, guess who was responsible for that. And remember, the Hunter was in such good physical condition because he wasn't constantly in the presence of the Dark Crystal, so he wasn't suffering the negative effects. That means that SkekUng, being so far away from it himself for so long, must have been phenomenally strong when he was at his prime. SkekVar wouldn't have dared to insult or challenge him.
Technically they said there were 18 of them do you know what happened to the other 3?

Skekmal is fastest and fittest the skeksis but skekuny is heavy so one good hit by skekmal to kill skekuny but the some to skekuny to skekmal but I think skekmal will win the to be fastest and fittest I said good hit to kill him so skekmal is the win
SkekUng is like a tank. SkekMal might be more agile, but his sword strikes were blocked by Gelfling counterattacks, whereas skekUng shattered an obsidian rock. If Ordon or Rian had attempted to block such a strike, they would have been turned to paint.
