It's perplexing how this movie didn't do well in the box office. It was such an effort of love with a level of world building and narrative not seen since Tolkien's time.
Some people just don’t appreciate and look at the effort until way later or if at all
Hey, I was taken to see this movie twice
apparently it was second highest in Japan that year, definitely makes ya wonder if zelda was inspired by this film
because it's incredibly niche in appeal.
I scored well with audiences, it just wasn’t marketed correctly.
I watched Age of Resistance, and you can really see the decay of the Skeksis.
Before the Gelfling genocide, they were loud, rowdy, gobbling food exciting, even having Podlings play music in the background.
Now, they’re quiet and almost lethargic. They don’t talk much, only screaming incoherently when food is taken, but they give up just as quickly as they start.
Im still pissed netflix cancelled that series...
The only time a prequal was actually done perfect. Absolutely perfect. They decided to terminate it hours after winning an emmy. Insanity

This is such a great scene. In just a few shots we learn everything we need to know about the Skeksis: they're decadent, they're cruel, they hold themselves higher than all other life, they despise each other, but are obligated to dine together nonetheless, hinting that they are traditional folk.

You can also learn a lot from each character individually by paying attention to their individual mannerisms.
Skekekt and Skekzok are the only ones using finger utensils, showing they have a bit more elegance and higher table manners. Especially Ekt who never has food sticking out of their mouth when eating.
But Ekt is also making a lot of noise over eating one piece and freaks out over the loose Crawlie and shying from Augrha showing how delicate they are.
Skekzok also looks at Skekung with a look of confusion at one point, showing he's the most likely to make the "sit up straight for thra's sake" comment.
Skektek tries to steal some food off Skekshod's plate showing impatience and envy, even calling the treasurer a slimeball when he was caught.
Gourmand is obviously the sloppiest of the bunch, but Skekung- despite being Emperor- has the mannerisms of a dog like when he tosses rotten food behind him and dunks his head in a water bowl just to shake the water off.
Love minor details like this.

I love how at 2:28 the one skeksis turns to the other and the other immediately knows "oh he's missed out on a lot" and then says "gelfling" and the other skeksis just understands immediately
Edit: after reviewing the footage again, it's actually visible that the one who sits next to Scientist could tell that scientist was going to ask- he was looking at scientist a few seconds before he turned. He probably assumed the scientist wouldn't know.
Yeah that's a fantastic detail. It's just now dawning on me.
He even goes "Oh, Gelfling!" afterwards.
That's because Skektek the scientist never dined with the whole clan. He was seen as an outsider. His main allies were the Treasurer ( who mentioned the Gelfling) and The Emperor who Invited him to sit with them all. It was all very political very much like real life.
@@raffarmenio6933yeah, the show expands on the concept. Scientist had no idea what was going on, only that there was a new emperor and whatever else a few other skeksis wanted to keep him informed of.
Interesting that the Garthim master invited Scientist back into the fold when he becomes emperor. If they ever get a chance to do a season 2 of Age of Resistance, I hope they expand on the Garthim master, since he kind of just appears.
Did anyone notice that after Chamberlain got banished, even his chair at the dining room table was gone afterwards? They didn't waste any time.

I like how the Ornamentalist is the only one with good table manners. I also find it funny how they threat Aughra like an unwanted house guest rather than an intruder. The Skeksis hate the Mystics and Aughra, but they cant kill them so they're just like: ''Not this bitch again.''

When I saw this as a kid, I was blown away by it.
Its just a bunch of animals sitting around a table eating, but they looked so alive and real that the whole scene is just fascinating.

The puppeteering on all Jim Henson productions is so expressive and engaging. It will always beat cgi to me.

"Something's stuck in my teeth." I have a feeling that line was definitely improvised. Jim Henson does say in the making of documentary on this movie that the actor/puppeteer who played SkekUng would actually do some funny improv after Jim would say "Cut!" after this scene was shot.

Actually, the noises Augra made reminded me of my own mother. She got really heavy during her last 10 years of life, hence extreme diabetes and hypothyroidism which created awful health problems that she denied having and refused her medications, which shortened her lifespan and created many other problems, as well. So sad.

This scene just goes out of its way to try and make the Skeksis even more disgusting than they already are--eating baby Nebries, horribly sloppy table manners, eating live Crawlies--and it's one of the most memorable scenes in the movie.

one of the genius aspects of Jim Henson was that he was able to take some otherwise truly scary and terrifying creatures like the Skeksis and suddenly make them a bit less frightening with a scene like this.
Its one of the most memorable scenes easily from the film and all it is are a bunch of vicious dragon-bird like villains eating with bad table manners, they slurp, burp, gulp, chew loudly, squabble between each other, and suddenly the vile devious skeksis are much more goofy :)

Notice... movement.. movement everywhere.. subtle movement of costumes, fire, feathers and smoke.... Jim Henson painted his frames like a painter. But he used not just colour.. He also painted with movement.

This scene is a classic 😂 Its just another dinner night for these vultures until Aughra shows up like an angry mother in law.
THE DARK CRYSTAL has a lot of dark, grotesque moments. This scene, though, is one of black comedy. Terrible table manners, name-calling, and eating in the most disgusting ways imaginable. But it is funny in a dark way.
Indeed and what do you think of Henson's other fantasy Labyrinth?
It's different in tone from THE DARK CRYSTAL; the former film is a bit more morbid and deliberately serious in nature (not that it's a bad thing -- it's actually a refreshing change of pace), whereas LABYRINTH is a bit of humor and drama. I think both are unique films in their own ways. I consider CRYSTAL the more consistent and tighter film, but LABYRINTH still has its eyepopping charms. And of course the late David Bowie is a great Goblin King.
I also agree, i always consider TDC to be a better mature Henson film but Lab is still solid eh? and do you think 1982 is a great tear in movies?

The Dark Crystal -- Age of Resistance has been out for some years now and they mainly use puppetry and practical effects, while computer effects are used merely to lend support to the practical and puppetry effects.

Whenever I heard the words Roast Beef, I think of Roast Nebre, the Skesis and the Dark Crystal. This scene is classic.
I love how this scene immediately follows the scene of a mother Nebry in the forest with her baby... very dark!

I actually like this scene as it shows them eating, which is what they're implied to do on a daily basis- a relatively mundane action that any person does. It does very subtle things that you being to notice once you're older- it shows that they're not actively trying to plan atrocities on a daily basis whenever they're on screen all the time, the Skeksis are just being themselves and do a regular thing. It adds a layer of normality to them that is not related to the plot, which most villains don't do nowadays.
Also, the fact that they're able to eat with each other at the same table means in spite of their differences, they do value each other's company or at the very least, can tolerate who they don't like long enough to enjoy a meal. This either shows a hidden layer of decency or pragmatic intelligence, since if they were as one-dimensional evil as they actually were- there would've been just one Skeksis left if they backstabbed each other the entire time.
They all had their alliances and that's who they sat with. That way they could keep the peace being seperated from the ones they despised.
A million, nay, trillion times better than any CGI nonsense. We need innovators like Henson back.
Agreed yet there is some good CGI like T2, Jurassic Park, Gollum in Lord of the Rings or Rocket Raccoon in Guardians of the Galaxy

I miss old school film making. So much more tactile. There's just nothing tangible with computer animation, just too much glossy sheen.
What about Mad Max 4, John WIck, Nolan's stuff etc.? all used practical effects. Even Guardians of the Galaxy used practical make up effects on alien beings and did some good CGI on Rocket Raccoon.

true, CGI supposedly makes things faster. but usually the use of it is just lazy and it looks like ass. when light doesnt reflect from the correctly or even from right direction, and how they interact with their environment without any weight in their movement and in unnatural ways. it takes a LOT to do CGI properly, the very reason why gollum in LOTR still looks good this day even tho the movies are soon 20 years old. because they went all out with it and even thought out skin layers and everything to make it best they could.
which is why it is better that movies would use practical effects, because even if the practical effect is not very good thanks to low budget, it will still look better on the screen than shitty CGI that looks like home edit stock footage.

Love it when the General takes a drink and then shakes his head, it looks so real.
Seeing the difference between the movie and Age of Resistance, in the series the Skekisis were a lot more hyper and had music while they ate. In the movie, they were slower and had a quiet dinner. But it has been years and that can happen when you drain all life from Thra, and there is not much essence left, and you grow old and weak.
I love how Aughra just steals that thing off the table.

toxic tabby Cooked chicken wings (home cooked from the pan) (especially with sweet bbq sauce), with some side orders close enough to buttered noodles and vegetables (peas, corn, green beans, mixed vegetables, etc.), maybe some cold vanilla or chocolate ice cream for dessert. Fell in love with chicken wings since I was a little kid. probably around 4 or 5 years old. The vhs came when I was around 5 or 6 years old and that was when we watched it.

Oh, I just had a flashback. As a kid I remember re-enacting this part 0:55 with a bit of meat at the dinner table once; my friend loved it. My parents didn't.
It’s really interesting watching this scene after seeing Age of Resistance. The Skeksis actually had manners and poise before the draining of Meera.
And now after so many years of draining and murdering, there is really no finesse or poise anywhere. Just a bunch of monsters who have lost the care of manners of formality.

There is only one skeksis that actually was the most well mannered. It was the ritual master. He was literally eating casually with his finger fork while everyone else....well.... ate like skeksis.

This is so weird watching this scene after watching AoR, they tried to make the Skeksis seem really repulsive here but compared to the dinner scenes in AoR this seems rather tame. It's also weird that the placement of the Skeksis' seats is different than in the show

In my mind, they are more subdued due to age. They are still gluttons and have horrible manners but now in their advanced age they can’t or don’t want to go all out.
