Steam Deck Framerates just got BOOSTED - But is it good enough?

AMD FSR 3.1, which can offer both FidelityFX Super Resolution upscaling and Frame Generation, can take a passable game on Valve’s portable and considerably boost performance. The reason I highlighted Spider-Man: Remastered earlier is because I’ve seen examples of players pushing this game into its Very High graphical settings with FSR 3.1 enabled, and still achieving smoothly playable frame rates in the 60-70fps range, with just occasional drops down to the 40s.
There is always the risk that enabling these two technologies will create input lag or visual artifacts. However, my early testing on Ghost of Tsushima and Horizon Forbidden West suggests that the performance boost is considerable, and the graphical downsides are remarkably small.
In fact, I would put it to Valve that it may even be worth reassessing Horizon Forbidden West and its Steam Deck rating. It’s currently marked as Unsupported due to its demanding graphics, but if Nixess were to create a Steam Deck graphical preset, with AMD FSR 3.1 enabled, there’s no reason why it shouldn’t be marked as ‘Playable’ at least.
More importantly, AMD FSR 3.1 can have a huge impact in games outside of the five PlayStation titles to which it was recently added. As the Steam Deck hardware starts to show its age, and more powerful handhelds flood the market, FSR 3.1 offers a genuine way to ensure the Deck still performs in new releases, and it may even take off the pressure when it comes to releasing the highly anticipated Steam Deck 2.

A new Proton GE update was released yesterday, and if you have been experiencing an issue with Elden Ring not allowing multiplayer if you don't own the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, you might be very happy with this update. The new Proton GE 9-10 version does have some component updates and the removal of d8vk build options, but the biggest part of this update comes from a protonfix that allows EAC for Elden Ring to function correctly if you don't have the new expansion. It's nice to have for people that can't get the expansion, though I recommend it if you enjoy soulslikes.

Yup, 40 fps is my go to on the Deck
The seamless experience of passing save files between Deck/PC/Link makes buying games feel like the better deal than piracy. I basically use piracy in place of a demo for games that don’t have one. But the moment I’m starting to feel invested, I don’t want to risk losing my progress. Companies like Epic complain that Valve is a monopoly and any piracy of their exclusives is a lost sale, while not realizing that they aren’t competing with Valve, so much as they are competing with free games. Steam makes the purchase worthwhile through reliability and support.
In regard to the setup for Forza Horizon 4 on the Deck, I downloaded and installed it after you had posted that video going through the setup process. I tried launching it without altering anything and it didn’t work. After going through the steps you laid out, it launched perfectly fine and runs great.

FSR on a handheld like the steam deck is a godsend. I've been playing RE8 on the deck recently, and it runs flawlessly at high settings because of it.

so yeah you can play ghost of tsusi at 800p FSR balance with 70 fps + but at 22 freaking watts.

Or in elden ring game files you can create an empty file called DLC.bdt and the game will recognize this as the dlc of the game and the online will work
I hate Denuvo for the their online checks. Not the the performance thing. No, I get pissed that I paid full price for a game. Only to be told I have to periodically ask permission to play the game. Otherwise it’ll literally shut down and demand that I connect to the internet.
But I agree, the main issue is that games are delivered intentionally broken and periodically require reaching out to an online service to unfsck thenselves.
I can tolerate technical difficulties due to bugs, but not due to deliberate and malicious anti-features working exactly as designed.
They consider it acceptable to inflict issues onto paying customers in the name of coercing additional sales out of a segment of their users. Anyone showing discontent is quickly labeled a "pirate" and dismissed, too. It's an unbelievable show of contempt towards their users and I won't stand for it.
EA and Ubisoft are the reason I do not buy games at all from any store front they publish to. I think we need laws that say if you publish your game outside of your own store that you DO NOT BUNDLE IT WITH YOUR TRASH STORE FRONT. It's already on a store outside your own, we don't need to have two when I didn't even buy if from the one they have. Especially for single player only games. I also think DRM should not be a thing as well. Look I get they want to protect the games they publish on launch but after a game is out for like a year or 2 or when they have made money and they start to go on sale all the time then that means they do not care about that game any more to need to have it and there should be laws where they patch them out completely after so long. No one is out pirating when you see a game go on sale but when I do see sales and also see the tab on the page that says it has DRM I still will not buy it. It just saved me money to say no when I see it and that money can go to maybe a few damn good indie games.
For now, that's the gameplan. No purchase if it's bundled with a launcher.
Let's hope that at least one very rich kid of the senate files a law about these bs launchers.
Thanks for speaking out against launchers. I am going on a trip to portual tomorrow and since i heard, max payne 3 runs great on the deck, i wanted to play it on the flight. That was until i started it an hour ago and saw the freaking launcher... These things a a plague.
Yeah these launchers are one of the most annoying parts, you could start the game before you get on the flight but that's just a bad fix for me

On my desktop PC frame generation saved Microsoft Flight Simulator FPS and stopped all stutters. On my Steam Deck it destroyed my Ghost Of Tsushima completely. It stopped working (only shows black screen when you launch the game) but started working after turning off steam cloud which made it possible to get to the main menus and disable frame generation from the options.
So it's like alcohol can't make everyone look good at some point you pass out trying to drink them to 60fps.?

You said "Elden ring runs so well on the steamdeck" im curious to know your settings. I locked the framerate at 30 and am playing with mid settings and some on off, I still get dips to 27 on Limgrave. I did, tho, install a mod that implements its own anti alias, disabled AA and SSAO ingame and it seems to work at a steady 30. (If I remove the lock, it varies between 30 to 45)
the steam decks OLED screen looks amazing, i wanted to do a test on multi versus so i had my mother get on her ps4 and i got on the steam deck and played some matches with her and the screen on the steam deck blew her 800 dollar 10 year old samsung TV out of the water, her TV colors were so dry compared to the popping OLED screen. only issue i had was i could not accept invites from her but she had invite from me pop up, so in other words i could not join here lobby because there was no invites displayed. not to mention later on there was major input lag and we kept getting disconnected but ima assume thats multi versus fault because i can play solo without lag on high settings but not with other people after awhile it always seems to be the pattern with that game.

It is worth it and get the 512gb OLED because if you regret the anti glare which yes, will affect the colors, you're stuck with it. With the 512, you can decide to add an anti glare filter later anyway.
Did you say you have a 4090, but lock your framerate to 60? Is that a monitor limitation or do you just prefer the lower framerate? /Higher quality visuals
I just prefer consistency and my monitor does 60 or 240. Can’t hold 240 so I hold 60

I still couldn't get the Burnout paradise running on Steam Deck. I could see till the first loading screen and then it just quit the game. -_- Help.

I took a road trip and could only play Elden Ring on my Steam Deck because some of the games I wanted to play was either RDR2 (Rockstar Launcher didn't work) or any EA racing game.
took my steamdeck on a flight to australia. Went to boot RDR2 and saw the rockstar launcher info. I had to refund it on the airplane Wi-Fi.

For elden ring, I just went into game files and put dlc.bdt with the other but files and online works
If I remember correctly, if you set Steam to Offline Mode while still connected to the Internet, EA launcher games will give you the EA Launcher Sign In, and if you sign in there, you should be able to launch the EA game without being online in the future.

Having a hard time deciding deck oled or ally x. Ahhhh been going back and forth! I feel like deck is getting better. Idk.
The problem is there's no magic you can do to make new games playable, I personally prefer the legion go but yesterday I had to go to the hospital for 6 hours so I brought the deck to play some offline games in case the wifi was bad.

Just go with a Legion Go...much more power to play those Triple A games that the oled is having a hard time to play, and the Ally X is not a major difference, Legion display is amazing and they just fixed it up nice with a major update, way more polished 8.8 display which blows both the deck and Ally away

All the games in my Steam Deck run at 40fps. Battery life is the single most important thing for me. 40fps is good enough.
Did you try Gran Turismo7 with the PSVR2? Absolutely game changer.
I wrote a guide on how to get GT4 running stable at 60fps in the Steam Deck, posted it on Reddit. But my special game is Gran Turismo 2, did you know there’s a special fan made edition called A-Spec? It’s pretty good, you should try it.
And I have a bunch of racing games recommendations and needs, you’re absolutely right, EA does a lot of racing and their launcher sucks. Dirt Rally 2.0 doesn’t have it, for some reason, and it’s awesome

I've been playing THPS 1+2 and 2D sidescrollers games (Sonic games for the most part) on my steam deck lately (often docked on the TV).
I play more demanding games/FPS/RTS etc on PC with MKB , even (beware...heresy incoming) every Halo game from CE to infinite.
I can't shoot a damn thing with a controller 😅

Frame generation makes latency worse, if someone wants the lowest latency possible, it's the worst thing you can use, it's not an "fps increase", it's a "framerate smoother", it's really only useful if you already have really high framerate but want to smooth it out, which can easily be argued that it kind of defeats the point, if you already have high FPS then extra FPS isn't really going to doo much, but if your aim is low latency it ruins it as the "doubled" framerate will have even worse latency than the original FPS.
On a device like the steamdeck, it makes almost no sense because of the 60/90 hz screen except for very slow-paced games where latency isn't a concern at all and you just want to smooth out the framerate.
Also, these are interpolated frames, not "ai" frames, it basically takes two frames next to each other than averages them out to make a third frame and injects it between those two frames.
Kingdom Hearts is a nightmare to run on the deck but once you get it going it’s amazing!!!!!

steam having DRM dont means its perfect, that is why EA put their own drm on top of it, wich isnt perfect either but at least they can say to their stake holders: "we tried" and that is all that matters to then.

@@DeckReady I've never heard of or seen that before and got my first freesync display years ago, so I googled it and there are a few reddit posts mostly centered around AMD GPUs and those posts are 4+ years old... It was only happening to a small, select few years ago... Locked 60 is so sluggish feeling I can't believe you've continued sticking to it. I'd rather have screen tearing than locked 60, but it's one of those things where if you're used to high refresh, going to locked 60 feels horrible, and if you're used to 60, you don't realize what you're missing.

Frame gen does definitely help from my experience thus far in those games. This is all a plus. One thing to note, in some games, you may actually need to use Xess scaler with AMD Frame gen (Forbidden West)
