      Ooohhhhh!!! Free game!!!
I am saddened to see things like demos be held in such a negative light. Steam does not like when you buy a game and return it because it was not fun. I was warned once that I would be banned if I continued the returns. However, there were no d3mos for those games I was returning! If there were, I probably would not have had such a hard time deciding whether to buy or skip.
I did try Dynasy Warriors 9 demo Friday night. Found out I did not think it was worth the money. I will stick to the previous titles. But now, Steam employees won't be mad at me!
Demos serve a purpose. We need to keep those around.

Steam Deck and Valve have done so much for linux gaming. I just bought Cataclismo, an early access RTS, and it worked flawlessly on my Linux desktop PC. I didn't even consider the possibility that it might not work when I pressed buy. That's such a contrast to just a few years ago.

@downbtneverout while obviously I would never say no to more battery.
I just upgraded from a base deck to an OLED and honestly that bump in battery alone is sooo good.
Pro tip: most games run great at 11-12w, sometimes bumping it up to the full 15w sometimes only gives a few extra fps.
I know Dave the Diver isn't the most intensive game, but at 15w I get like maybe 4 hours? Bump it down to 11w and it gets me through basically a whole day of playtime without any performance dip.

On the demo thing with the 2013 DICE summit: If somebody doesn't like the demo, then selling the game to them would have been ripping the person off anyways. It's a perfect example of blindly following numbers and not processing what those numbers mean, and the general shitty anti-consumer attitude that a lot of large businesses have. I don't think that "selling a $70 game to customers who don't like the game and never play it again after a few minutes" is a business model that should be encouraged or emulated.

I like the ideas of being able to sort on the Steam Store and the Steam Deck using 'Demo' as the criteria. I have been doing this by making a category on my games list and then selecting 'Add to' from the right-click menu (when I remember to do so....).
I also agree that automatically adding the sort criteria to the demos would help me to clean up space on my Steam Deck when it is time to delete them.

I would love to see Valve take another swing at the Steam Controller. I loved the concept of the old one, though I felt like we didn't have the right software to match the technology of the touch pads. I'd be down even to see them do something like a steam deck set of controls that could be used with the deck when docked, or on other machines.

I really appreciate the "Rotate Joystick" option. While the shmups I play (namely touhou) won't profit from 90° rotations, I might play around with the setting to make it more comfortable to point North. Updates like these show that valve cares about the ecosystem, even in it's details.

There's so many Next Fest demos now that it's utterly ridiculous that most of them "self-destruct" when the Next Fest ends after 7 days. Next Fest demos should only be removed if there's problems with the demo that can't be quickly fixed with a demo update or the game's development is abandoned before the full game comes out.
It's also annoying that many games that had a Next Fest demo don't have any demo version return later on (the most obvious time for it to come back is when the full game launches). All in all, Next Fest is just too frustrating - over 1,000 demos that you only have 7 days to try before the vast majority of them vanish forever! I've given up with Next Fest until they make the demos stay up much longer.

Wow, iam amazed that the no rest for the wicked devs were so serious to make it work on the SD. It was not on my wishlist before as it seemed to sluggish, but now? Straight to wishlist it goes! Thx devs! And yet again it shows that you can create an amazing looking game on limited hardware when you put in the effort. I know many people will disagree with me here, but having a common (minimum/handheld) performance target for PC devs to optimize their games for is good for all PC gamers, as devs now have to put in more effort instead of "well just buy a better PC then".

"We don't need you, but you need us" is a incredibly important lesson that more people need to understand. I learned this at a young age while working in the restaurant industry. The food distributors would often screw up and send the wrong stuff/bad stuff or the salesman would try to convince you to spend more on certain things. The boss would just absolutely rail the salesman that would come. He would call him up and expect him to drive 60 miles from the city to come correct issues. Because at the end of the day, we didn't need them, they needed us. There's plenty of other food distributors to go through. If they want our money, then they need to provide a service that is acceptable.
Same thing goes with any business, including the games industry. If they aren't providing something that is worth our money, then we should all be moving on to something else and calling them out for their BS. These greedy jerks need to realize that we are the ones who provide their livelihood and without us, they would be nothing. On the other hand, people need to realize that you don't have to stand for this nonsense and it's your right to raise your voice and vote with your dollar. They shouldn't be allowed to just walk all over us.

Shenmue and Tony Hawk 1&2 still in my favorite games. My cousin and I used to play the THPS demo over and over and over trying to beat each others high score. He'd play all day and beat mine and then I'd play all night and beat his. That's been me for the last 10 to 15 years. It's weird because I use to play video games (mainly JRPG/RPG'S) most of my awake hours and even gave up sleeping hours to finish a game during the weekend before the game had to go back to the store (rentails). Not exactly sure when or why it happened, sure, I still pay attention to new games coming out and love to tinker with the hardware, mostly PC hardware, but when it comes to play the games, I either just scroll through them and never pick one to play or I will start to play one but get board and quite either in the first few minutes or many hours into it. I'll go months in between games and out of like 10-20 games I'll be lucky if I play even one of them long enough to beat it. It takes a really good game to play and beat nowadays, where before it really just needed to be a JRPG/RPG for me to play and beat it, even several times over or like 15-20 times for games like Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VII. Even though Final Fantasy VI is my favorite Final Fantasy, I only ever beat it like once or twice but played it countless times. Where Final Fantasy VII, I beat almost everytime I played it, I just never played it as much as part VI but thought was part III because I played it mostly back on the SNES. Wasn't till it was on PlayStation before I knew it was really VI. lol Well I'm really off track now, see, when I'm talking about video games I can go on forever, it's the playing them that's the problem and I wish I knew why. I got the deck way back as one of the preorder batches. And even way back then, first game I played was a vertical shmup with screen rotates. Steams controls were easy to set up for it, and as they are assigned for that game until I change them, really no problem. No sweat if they make an easier way (without cluttering the interface). Just saying it was already easy. Sounds like good news, just nothing we couldn't already do. Steam has the best controller customization, so this is an area I like to see continued improvement, as they don't need to for competition reasons.

I downloaded Fae Farm's Switch demo last week and ended up buying it two days later because I was having so much fun. Though the one thing I wish Valve would do, is make it easier to purchase the Steam Deck locally. I would love to walk into a shop (be it best buy or whatever) and pick the one I want, then take it home with me.

I love that we can now play demo's even if we have the game as an achievement hunter cause a few games still have demo achievements.
Plus in the case of The Stanley Parable the demo is an original little game made for the demo to not spoil the main game but is equally funny in it's own right and was so worth playing even if you already beat the game. So I highly recommend trying out that demo for a fun 20 minutes.
And throwing my hat in the ring for that dudeling code haha, you've mentioned it before that you and Bill are in the game and I still think that is so awesome!

The first game I have bought yet because I don't want to play it in an emulator but the second game My friend was super into so he bought it and I liked it too but I didn't buy it because I hardly ever do that anymore I have so many games my backlog I just play them instead.
It's definitely on my wish list now though.

One day, maybe we'll get Steam Controller 2, upgraded Steam Link (as a more widely supported and efficient application), and a public release of Steam OS with plenty of hardware support.
By then, maybe Valve can do Steam Deck 2 and Orange Box 2 with Half Life 3, Team Fortress 3, Left 4 Dead 3, and Portal 3.
A perfect climax of all their work. The perfect showcase of both their abilities and efforts, as well as the same for their hardware and software on perfect display with beautifully crafted games. Games that could send shockwaves and change the entire landscape of things. Games that show everyone how it's done both with what Valve has provided them, and with the industry as a whole.

Regarding demos, I saw a trailer for this game DoubleShake recently... and despite its clearly being inspired by some things I was interested in (Klonoa, Mischief Makers), I just wasn't quite sure about it. But...! it had a free demo, and I gotta say, I LOVE the NPC interactions! The various ways you can interact with the world seem great too, and there's really nice animations and aesthetics! A few things like sound could use a little polish, but the game isn't out yet so I'm just hoping that gets ironed out. Regardless, still looks like a great game that also reminds me a lot of Shantae with its silly dialogue style!
All that to say, a good demo can really solidify your faith in a project as well. Make demos!! They're good!!

Rotate output is a legacy thing from the Steam Controller. It's often ideal to rotate the trackpad outputs since a more natural swipe is like 45 degrees

That has actually been with the steam deck touchpads already since I think the launch, but it's new option for analog sticks. Ability to invert analog sticks on an axis is also pretty cool as a number of older titles might be using inverted controls that modern gamers are not used to and vice versa.

it has been a while but I remember one game I definitely only bought because of the Demo: SB for the PS1. Can't give the title because of the magixs of this realm. And the Demo was literally just the tutorial level.
And of course a lot of games I bought because they where randomly playable for a while in a store. Like Digimon World for example. Or Eye Toy. The game store put that in a window with the camera facing outside so you could play it from outside.

The lack of rumble is such a disappointment on that controller. However it opens the doors on steam input on not having to emulate a dualshock/sense for motion controller.
Back in the days Hollow knight didn't have vibration on the pc version, but switch version had HD rumble. Every time you pick those coins in the switch version is SO satisfying, on the pc version felt... empty.
