For serious pro work, 16" is a no brainer. It goes through the tasks like a workhorse, 14" is kind of a gimmick compared to 16". It works ok until it get's warm then all system fails. As a professional photographer I have opportunity if not a requirement to have both. 14" is a basic (M1,16gb ram) model, 16" is maxed up (m1max,64gb ram,gpu32c)... I got 16" 3 months after 14", and for sure I did a real life comparison. As photographer I use medium format camera, as well as full frame, so all files are huge. I use Lightroom, Capture one and Photoshop software, many times interlinked... To be brief, all the tools that serious pro uses, and I do hdrs, panoramas etc.. So there's no room to hide for the hardware. So after 4 months onward, this are my findings: 14" (16gb ram, basic graphic, 1tb) ok for a very basic tasks, it's great actually if you keep it simple and not load up very demanding projects. If you keep the quantity low, few 10 files for edit, export, retouch, etc... it shines out any intel based laptops immediately. It doesn't lag, all is smooth and it is on pair with maxed out 16". I love the size, bam you throw it in the photobag and you're off. Love it! BUT: as soon as bigger project come, with hundreds, thousands of shots, among which there are panoramas, hdrs, 1:1 previews etc..lots of 100% views of 100mp files, things fall back immensely. I say immensely to be compared to Intel laptops, if not even worse. With heavy load, Lightroom starts to lag so much, that at times it is impossible to work, every click on a brush takes few seconds of a "wheel time", which makes you wanna throw the laptop at the wall :). Don't but it is hideous. Therefore, for a quick jobs in-out, great. For a serious workstation, nope nope and nope. Gimmick! 16" (64gb ram, 32c gpu, 2tb) throw at it whatever you want, it goes through like a knife thru butter. I think that's not just the maxed out spec, but just the size. Cramping all the spec into 14" has to come with some tradeoffs. I can't even imagine what would happen if I'd get maxed out 14". It would fry, I guess. LR export: 46 edited files at 100mp to resized JPG= 14" needed 31 seconds more 187 edited files at 100mp to resized JPG= 16" (7:22min) / 14" (15.24min) ...14" slowed down after 4 minutes drastically. Which might be due to the heat that kicked in and slowed down everything. ...now imagine you are working on something else while exporting on 14". Of course on other occasions I did, and it only slows down the export even more. Don't even think of using other heavy duty software when process power slows down, you are in for a chain reaction when all just becomes a dream where you try to run but you can't. So if you are in for a serious work, needing a workstation; 16" is the only way, don't be mislead by reviewers who in most cases are not professionals in video/photo world.
Em tbh sounds like a RAM limitation that's causing the slowdown. Those 100mb photos in lightroom use a TON of RAM and swap has it's limits so it's overloading the system. I don't know if you could say it's a difference between the 16 vs 14 size as you can get higher configs for the 14 as well. Would be interesting to see the RAM usage in both cases
Depends on your profession. As developer, 14" is just as good as 16" because we usually use our apps in full screen mode anyway. When you say "serious pro work" and it turns our you're a photographer, obviously 16" is better. But for most professional people , that is not the case.
@@LarsRyeJeppesen what I meant obviously with “serious” (apologies if I wasn’t clear) work is to stress computer to maximum resources. 14” will heat up and performance will drop to 50%. If you’re just doing work where you don’t tire the system, then for sure its fine.
Fantastic review and choose the 16”. Couldn’t decide on portability Vs screen size. Working from home, it would be a desktop replacement with occasional travel. I already own IPad Air 10” for light travel ie. emails and entertainment consumption. I wanted the 14”, but replacing my desktop and overlapping with my IPad;larger screen was the deciding reason.
I have been working off the 13-inch Macbook Pros forever. I want a bigger screen without having to buy a monitor or a desktop. At this point, I want a laptop with a bigger screen. After getting a 16-inch Macbook Pro as a work computer -- it only fueled my desire to purchase a 16-inch Macbook Pro for myself. If I want something more portable I'll just take my ipad or 13 inch Macbook pro with me instead.
I’ve always gotten the 16 in macs because I feel as if I need to accomplish and actually do big-boy work on them. Whenever I use a smaller laptop it just feels weird
I guess you will miss one thing or another whichever size you pick, if you buy 14" , you will miss big screen, and if you buy big one you will miss portability, I think 15" would make a great size for Macbook pro.
oh god, the end part is 😂 stuff happens when you're not expecting it to happen especially when filming. Anyway, am really on portability when it comes to outdoor stuff but when the devices are just for home uses then am prefer the performance. When it comes to Macbook, I rather go to 14-inch and just bump up the specs and I don't want people to see that I have something expensive in my backpack. Thanks for the informative video about Macbooks today, David. 👊🏼
I’m not even a coffee drinker, but there’s a feeling about using something given to you by someone you love (and who loves you in reverse) that makes you feel all warm inside! ❤️ A huge shout out to both your dad and Littleneck Outpost for good (soon to improve with practice) coffee and a delicious mouthwatering egg sandwich! ☺️😌😋 Lastly, the ending at 13:57 - that BTS bit here is a keeper! A wider lens = more room to “fill it” with shots of food + coffee and when trucks are the bane of your existence! 😅
Do you have figures for 1 hour cafe browsing of the Pro 13” M1? I believe that’s where that particular laptops’s strength lies with just ludicrous battery life for casual use.
Great video I love the fact that you included some different results like charging and drainage times that were a lot different than most TH-camrs. I have been sitting on the fence with a decision of the 14 versus 16 both specked the same with the 10 core CPU 16 core GPU and 1 TB of storage. I do not usually use my computer with an external monitor so I am leaning towards the bigger screen as there is no question that it does increase productivity somewhat and additionally for media consumption having that bigger screen with the better speakers is amazing. I am just wondering if the portability of the smaller one may have me using my laptop more often as I will be more inclined to take it everywhere as opposed to using my iPad in certain circumstances instead.
The battery can only be compared in percentages, if the two MacBooks charge with the same power uptake, otherwise it's obvious that the 16" takes longer to charge e.g. 28% than the 14" as it has a larger battery
Excellent - thanks for validating my decision of several years ago - had a 15" and replaced with a 13" which has done well but now struggles with day-to-day life, so is up for renewal this year. Now I've heard they might be producing a MBP Lite, so waiting to hear a bit more about that. Deffo 14" next time - "if it's good enough for the Cogen....." as always, that's fine by me.
What do you think about the new Macbook Pros vs the Windows Surface Studios? I love the design of the new surfaces, but the macbooks have so much more power under the hood. I can't really decide and since you used both, maybe you give a little feedback on that. Love your videos
This lol I watched it 2 years later cuz I finally got a 4K hdr TV. And I thought that video was weird af. Almost felt like an insult. He turned the comments off on it so I was trying to find somewhere else to share my opinion
I must say i found your contents very informative. I am undecided between Apple Macbook Pro/Max 16" and Dell 9710. As the expert, pleased advised me of the pro's and con's of either. Thank you .
I don't know wich to choose yet hahaha. I have a 15' 2015 mbp but got too much problems with power cable, i replaced the dc port and the cable 2 months ago, now is burnt again. I am mobile developer and got used to larger screen sizes because I use emulators and stuff. Actually don't know if 14' is enough but seems to be like the same in performance. Another thing is, here where I live, apple products usually costs +20~40% more of the real price than in the USA and the 16' seems to be cheaper if I compare them at scale. Tough decision here! hahaha.
Good vid… but you did glaze over the better speaker sound in the 16-inch that most other reviewers pointed out. - I’m saving up for the 16 base, 1 TB (should be next month). - make sure you pack your espresso and bob the milk when steaming it to forth (I made millions of coffee drinks in the 80s)
Let me give you bit of advice for making a espresso as a barista😅 adjust your grind size from finer grind and move your way up to more coarse grind and adjust it in a way so you would get 2 times the amount of coffee you used in the 20s-30s timeline and don’t forget one thing as many do don’t double tamp the coffee grounds and make sure that they are even before doing it. Hope it helped 😅
Ha thank you! I'm experimenting with grind size and I made it smaller because it was over extracting, now randomly it's under extracting 🤦♂️ I'll figure it out but thank you!
First things first😂. Assuming your beans are quality, a good pull is mostly influenced by your tamp and your grind. The goal is to create the right amount of resistance for proper extraction. I'm sure there are yt videos galore out there that will explain it better than I can trying to type it out here. Also, an open bottom portafilter is super helpful in visually verifying the shot. It helps speed up the adjustment process because you can see how it's extracting (evenness and proper color for the different phases of the shot). Someone probably sells them for that machine, I made my own by drilling out the bottom of mine with a circular bit. Again I'll bet yt has a video on someone doing it for your machine that will tell you what size bit to get. Now on to the topic at hand. Great video and thank you for doing it. I'm wondering if you use NR in your renders and if so does that bog down the render times considerably? Here is my situation; Currently editing on a 13" mbp 1.4ghz i5 processor in davinci. I do the usual color corrections, usually add some effects, and use NR around 22 temporal and 4-5 spatial. My videos are around 40 min to 1 hr in length and my render times are usually between 6 and 14 hours long. If I don't apply noise reduction the renders are around 4 - 6 hrs long. I'm looking to upgrade because these render times are killing me. My final product needs to have noise reduction because I shoot in low light and get a lot of dancing pixels that are distracting. So I'm wondering if you have any idea what kind of improvements I might see with an upgrade? Right now I have my eye on the 16" because I like the idea of more screen real-estate and my eyes aren't getting any younger. Thanks again for the comparison!
I bought the 14 and exchanged for the 16. My 16 barley leaves the desk so it made sense. I have a 13” mbp as my work laptop so that is my device for probability. I will replace it with an Air one day as its perfect for my work laptop
Here is my question for all TH-camrs am so sorry sir you is the only one that have to hear this... Why is Final Cut or any production apps are the golden standard for any review for all Mac? There are many people that really dont care about Video or music production... I am not a hater obviously I enjoy them all....
Thanks for a frustratingly (Trucks, heaters, clunks, 😄) fantastic video! Definitely sharing this with my daughter who is a creator and uses MAC products and looking to upgrade. This video is loaded with pertinent information. Now, about that sandwich...OMG!! Talk about stealing one's thunder! 😆
Computer must be portable for me so you're definitely right stick with the 14 inch also they do get dust and food crumbs all in it cleaning all the time lol
I have the 16" for a little over a week and have been comparing it to my 15" 2016 MBP. Screen is starting to go, battery lasts like 4 hours maybe, only 256gb ssd, i7 6th gen. Yeah. But for all of that, it still rocks. Takes a DaVinci 10 minute 4k piece and rips it in 12 to 15 minutes. Which makes me kind of upset when I can do the same rip in 2/3's of that time on the M1 Pro. I am having a hard time feeling completely content about the $2500 I blew on this thing? Yeah, it looks better. The battery is beast. The sound is better. But, $2500? Really? Ugh.
You bought the wrong model....You said you blew $2500 on it...Which means you got the base 16" with the M1 Pro and a 16 core gpu......The M1 Max has twice (double) the video encoders/decoders than the M1 Pro......If you got the M1 max with a 32 Core GPU, the rendering speed would have increased significantly. At the video @ 13:00 you can see the same 4K project rendering speed between the (14 Core) M1 Pro vs (32 Core) M1 max, 15:34 mins vs 8:39 mins....That about 80% faster rendering speed....Some of that is the CPU difference, but most is the GPU. You said your older 15" macbook takes 12 to 15 minutes on a 10 minute 4k project in resolve, that your new $2500 16" macbook does it in "only" 2/3's of the time".....so about 67% of time....If you reduce that time by 80%.....67/1.8 = 37% of time time. Again this is between the 14 core M1 Pro and the 32 Core M1 Max.....The 16 Core M1 Pro is only marginally faster than the 14 Core M1 Pro in video rendering in resolve. Maybe 10% faster......All in all you are looking at at least a 60 to 75% faster speed. Anyway, If you wanted the fastest rendering speeds, you should have at least gotten the 32GB, 24 Core M1 Max 16" Model for $3100......which still has twice the memory and twice the video encoders/decoders of the base $2500 M1 Pro. Or an additional $200 so $3300 with 1TB of RAM.......or just splurge $3500 for the 32 Core M1 Max with 32GB Memory and 1TB Storage. This is a device you will use for 5 to 8 years. The extra money and time saved is a worthwhile investment. Like you said, the screen of your old macbook was starting to go after 6 years of use....devices need to be upgraded from time to time. You get better performance, better keyboard, better webcam, better microphones, better speakers, much better display, much better battery life, etc. Hope you enjoy your laptop......I personally prefer to wait for the 2nd gen, so they can correct most of the mistakes from the first gen....better optimization, more apple silicon native apps, native apple silicon games, face id etc.
@@kninezbanks Excellent analysis of the situation. My issue was budget. I just didn't have the extra cash for the better machine. Nor would I for the M2 either I suspect. I do enjoy the new MBP. Don't get me wrong. But, I am still looking at my old guy, seeing it still kick some a$$ and thinking, old Apple devices rock did I really need to do this? The answer is, yes for the sake of the future. Apple will drop my 1707 in the next OS rev more than likely. And that is the end of that. . . Anyway, thanks for the excellent thoughts. Couldn't agree more if it weren't for the cash.
people are making way too many videos about this topic. just buy both, use the maxed out 16" at home for desk setup and the entry level 14" sits in your bag for travel. done deal, saved you all a ton of time.
This is definitely an Apple sales team. why would anyone buy 2 identical laptops? Get a bigger screen if 14 is too small for ya. It’s really not that complicated they are both really good
@@Fieldoftheatres this was before the release of mac studio. now you can have a 14" MBP for travel and fully maxed out mac studio at home. 16" MBP is essentially stuck in the middle as a useless compromise for either travel or powerful workstation at home.

i also see a fellow kettle and ode grinder lol. but for the big question, for such a significant purchase I might go for the lower end 16. the weight/size difference definitely can be offset by the battery it has.

I will buy a 16’ Mac Book Pro, with 32 Core GPU, 64 GB of RAM, and a 4TB SSD. I have been using a 17’ Mac Book Pro, with 16GB of RAM, 2 TB SSD (originally with a 750GB HDD), and I had continual Graphics Card issues, which I had to have “repaired” four different times! Apple deserted their Customers who bought their Top-of-the-Line iMacs and Mac Book Pros, knowing that their Graphics Cards were defective, and I will get a nearly Maxxed-out Mac this time, since it can’t be upgraded, and Apple is lucky that I prefer Mac OS and their Industrial design. Apple really doesn’t deserve my business again, they have made a blazing fast M1-based Super Line of Macs, but I am furious about how Customers have been treated, and I am a Stockholder, so I appreciate the growth of the company, but despise the treatment of Customers, Assemblers, and Employees. They finally restored MOST of the Ports and MagSafe!
Real world? So far, I've noticed that the Trello desktop app doesn't work very well, and Safari's inspector constantly freezes. Other than that, it's a really good computer! Scrolling is super smooth, and as much as I hate to say it, it makes me disappointed in my OTHER i7 macbook pro, (my personal computer), which isn't usually as smooth. Once you move a step up, it's hard to go back, to say the least.
OMG thank you Apple for making a laptop where you show off your true innovation by adding ports other laptops have had (including this one) for over a decade. It’s nice to know you’re the leader in taking things away only to be praised for bringing it back. You’re like that friend that demands a thank you for returning that $50 he borrowed from you three years ago.
According to the incessant gossip, there’s going to be a more, better, plus good, MacBook Pro released by Apple in the immediate coming soon. The M2 and 3 and 4 are imminent… So according to the Apple rumor gurus, one should remain in a perpetual state of wait for the new one, as they pump out their opinions on what you should’ve bought last month and how it compares to what will be available next Apple event. There is a whole industry built on Apple divination and hype and they’ve been pumping out guesses for 25 years!

as soon as bigger project come, with hundreds, thousands of shots, among which there are panoramas, hdrs, 1:1 previews etc..lots of 100% views of 100mp files,
things fall back immensely.
Gimmick!
16" (64gb ram, 32c gpu, 2tb)
throw at it whatever you want, it goes through like a knife thru butter.
I think that's not just the maxed out spec, but just the size. Cramping all the spec into 14" has to come with some tradeoffs. I can't even imagine what would happen if I'd get maxed out 14". It would fry, I guess.
LR export:
46 edited files at 100mp to resized JPG= 14" needed 31 seconds more
187 edited files at 100mp to resized JPG= 16" (7:22min) / 14" (15.24min) ...14" slowed down after 4 minutes drastically.
So if you are in for a serious work, needing a workstation;
16" is the only way, don't be mislead by reviewers who in most cases are not professionals in video/photo world.
@@benjiman818 the chip as well, he just compare M1 Pro with that beast M1 Max, and off course the ram means everything besides the chip
Thanks. I’ll go with the 14”😃
Even though I’m not planning to upgrade to a MacBook Pro as I’m fine with my M1 MacBook Air, your review is such a joy to watch.👍
Thank you for watching regardless!
Just bought 16 inch M1 pro waiting for delivery today. I have a 13 inch MacBook Pro for portability. 16 inch is staying in home
looking like Peter Mckinnon from another reality 🤣
A huge shout out to both your dad and Littleneck Outpost for good (soon to improve with practice) coffee and a delicious mouthwatering egg sandwich! ☺️😌😋
Lastly, the ending at 13:57 - that BTS bit here is a keeper!
Yup. Here: th-cam.com/video/Bq2uWIX1ajE/w-d-xo.html
Damn, I would love to have even the MacBook Air. I would use it for my work but here in my country, it almost cost double the price in the US.
😳
I still don’t get why the 16” is thicker, with all the available space/volume it should be thinner
The best is that if there is 15.2
Great video I love the fact that you included some different results like charging and drainage times that were a lot different than most TH-camrs.
28% than the 14" as it has a larger battery
and according to Apple none of them officially supports fast charging via USB-C
If I could, I'd go for 16 *solely* because of the screen size. I like having more real estate when doing visual projects, like 3D scenes.
Hah thank you!
Can you tell me the name of your monitor and if it’s worth the price?
Thank you for the most entertaining review videos on TH-cam 👍👍
Thank you for watching!
Hey, nice video! And I like your couch! Do you mind telling the product name/manufacturer?
What do you think about the new Macbook Pros vs the Windows Surface Studios? I love the design of the new surfaces, but the macbooks have so much more power under the hood. I can't really decide and since you used both, maybe you give a little feedback on that.
Love your videos
That coffee machine may save You a lot of money if u decided to prioritize it over coffee shop trips :)
It’s true! But I also really enjoy going to coffee shops so 😬
Bro your hdr video was just a whole ad, hated it.
This lol I watched it 2 years later cuz I finally got a 4K hdr TV. And I thought that video was weird af. Almost felt like an insult. He turned the comments off on it so I was trying to find somewhere else to share my opinion
So better to buy the base model 16 inch instead 14 inch?
Excellent video. Can’t wait to get one !!
I must say i found your contents very informative. I am undecided between Apple Macbook Pro/Max 16" and Dell 9710. As the expert, pleased advised me of the pro's and con's of either. Thank you
.
I liked both, but getting one would put a dent on my wallet. Happy with the Legion 5 Pro for next 10 years i guess.
Wait isn’t that close in price? We’ll depends on what spec you got I assume. But also if you’re gaming that’s obviously the better choice anyway 👊
Very nice review David! I love the post video clips😇
Hello, i would like to know, what is you huge screen behind you where you Mac is on ? Thanks
Now on to the topic at hand. Great video and thank you for doing it. I'm wondering if you use NR in your renders and if so does that bog down the render times considerably? Here is my situation;
Currently editing on a 13" mbp 1.4ghz i5 processor in davinci.
My mum bought me a coffee machine too!
What a great video, thank you!
Thank you for watching it!
Great vid. Loved the outtakes.
😬🙏
Here is my question for all TH-camrs am so sorry sir you is the only one that have to hear this... Why is Final Cut or any production apps are the golden standard for any review for all Mac? There are many people that really dont care about Video or music production... I am not a hater obviously I enjoy them all....
Me : Is macbook pro 14 better or macbook pro 16 ?
My dad : the cheaper one
😂
How do you manage your calories after eating all of this fast food in real world test, assuming you do these real world test every other day?
I wouldn’t call that fast food by any means it’s a small shop not McDonald’s lol
And I just don’t film the boring meals in between 🤷♂️
Well yeah thanks for the explanation lol
If i go backpacking, i'll take a 14''. But if i do moto travel or go to the university i may take a 16''. And an ipad pro with it.
Ha it’s all worth it for kind comments like this 🙏
Thank you for watching and hope it helps her out! Ugh now I want that sandwich again lol
IThe trackpad was bigger on the 15 than 13 inch usb c versions too.
What was that sounds at 5:46😈

Jk: I know it's due to the sofa cushion. Awesome video man keep it up.
Computer must be portable for me so you're definitely right stick with the 14 inch also they do get dust and food crumbs all in it cleaning all the time lol
Wow, it was a very cool ending! I think that this is a very good idea to show what has left beside the scene. You like the Jackie Chan =D
Haha thank you!
I got the 14 but sometimes I wish I had gotten the 16 for the screen size.great video! Also, damn that lens fisheye is crazy haha
I would assume the 16” supports Max Power mode and…wait he just said it
Good stuff , thank you.
Is there any resolution or brightness between screens?
after watching this video i was still as confused as before watching it . 👍🏻
Trying so hard to make video like Peter McKinnon
people are making way too many videos about this topic. just buy both, use the maxed out 16" at home for desk setup and the entry level 14" sits in your bag for travel. done deal, saved you all a ton of time.
This is definitely an Apple sales team. why would anyone buy 2 identical laptops? Get a bigger screen if 14 is too small for ya. It’s really not that complicated they are both really good
Can buy a large desk monitor to plug into
@@Fieldoftheatres this was before the release of mac studio. now you can have a 14" MBP for travel and fully maxed out mac studio at home. 16" MBP is essentially stuck in the middle as a useless compromise for either travel or powerful workstation at home.
Awesome! Send the money
They should’ve added FaceID in the notch so it’s more useful, but eh. It makes improvement for the next iteration, aha.
Gotta have the coffee in the videos. 👍
☕️✅
Hi @TheUnlockr , could you please do a video on desk set, especially the one with the 49 inch monitor ( also maybe if you could review 49 inch monitor with MacBook Pro 16 inch that would be great. Amazing content, appreciate your videos, thanks.
Nice video man! As usual ✌🏻
🙏🙏
on a side note, the espresso machine has lots of potential for beginners to amateur :)
i also see a fellow kettle and ode grinder lol.
but for the big question, for such a significant purchase I might go for the lower end 16. the weight/size difference definitely can be offset by the battery it has.
I went for the 16 inch base model, and its arriving today,, im soo pumped
You like it?

I stan for the big boi
I go for the 16 inches ... 14 inches is already so expensive ....so what the heck..... Let's go 16 inches!! Let's get the best of the best ....Either way , you going to spend a lot of money....)))
Good vid mate. Congratz ! What's the name of the opening song after Josh ?
Thank you! And no idea I put them in and then lose them and never look at the names sorry
I usually like big laptops but the 16 inch Macbook is too big for portability. It's bigger and heavier than Windows laptops with a 15.6 inch screen
Forget the computers, tell us more about that sandwich.
They finally restored MOST of the Ports and MagSafe!
what about the fans?
Can’t go wrong with any of them
Is their any rumours on face I’d coming to the mbp
i would love to either one of them, if only I could afford one of them.
I love my 14 !
Make more videos man. Very well done. Make a coffee on the next video.
Thank you!
14” for who already have *plenty of macbook 💻 or old.
16” for who want to upgrade their early 2000s macbook or pc user or young back ppl
???????????????????
its so hard to decide😅
So, better performance a d battery like and more real state.
Btw now following on twitch
Apple should offer 16 inch macbook air,.
Just get one of each simple...
The notch is stupid
I ordered 14
I would by 16", since use an external monitor 85% of my time, but I will get 64Gb.
According to the incessant gossip, there’s going to be a more, better, plus good, MacBook Pro released by Apple in the immediate coming soon. The M2 and 3 and 4 are imminent…
So according to the Apple rumor gurus, one should remain in a perpetual state of wait for the new one, as they pump out their opinions on what you should’ve bought last month and how it compares to what will be available next Apple event.
There is a whole industry built on Apple divination and hype and they’ve been pumping out guesses for 25 years!
But, what is that monitor? Where can I find one?
