"Absolutely no use for this today"? Should we take that to mean you don't hike/backpack in South Africa? In case you aren't aware - everyone who backpacks or thru-hikes seriously still carries maps. This is because maps don't leave you stranded with dead batteries, don't fail when they get wet, and don't loose accuracy when your view of the sky is obstructed. Granted, the watch is subject to similar risks, but I would suggest that your claim is a touch overstated.

Some people may say that your claim is a little over the top.

I have this. Great watch. The gmt setting though can be tricky and the perpetual calender is a hard to set and finding people to set or even touch it is hard. It is accurate and is certainly sturdy. I in turn love the dome crystal. Super unique.

Battery change in them is not straightforward and it's very easy to destroy the paper thin circuit board inside. I've done several. I you know what you're doing (i.e. follow Seiko's battery change and calendar reset instructions), have the proper tools which aren't exotic, and take your time with due care, it's not that difficult. However, it's also not intuitive for those that think they're expert at the "pry out the old with a large screwdriver and plop in the new battery pressing it in with the thumb" battery changes. Idiot "watch battery changers" have destroyed hundreds of these Seiko perpetual movements as they are fragile with the back off and when removing and replacing the lithium cell. In addition, resetting the calendar is not intuitive and they screw that up too. Closed up, they're quite robust. If you don't have a copy of the battery change instructions, get one. I keep a PDF of it on hand. Learned how to do it myself as I've got four of the Seiko perpetuals and finding someone who knew what they were doing to perform a battery change was frustrating.

@@Sparks68 Very true. I also tried to do a battery change in my mile marker by myself seven or so years ago. Though I was as careful as I could be, I didn't know the peculiarities of the movement or how to correctly do the exchange and thus ruined something in the movement and had to have it repaired by Seiko.

@LordHewing LOL....well that's a throw back to the 80's...I actually looked for something like that on Amazon...I may have to have another look or make my own. Thanks for the feedback.

@LordHewing Indeed...I have my own thoughts on how we are becoming far too reliant on electronics. Thanks for the input.

Weird question for you, there's one of these selling in my area for 37$ second hand looks in similar shape except he just replaced the crystal. What price do you think I should offer or is it a fair price.

I leather cover would protect it if you don't mind a delay while you remove the cover to read the time? You could line the inside of the cover with something very soft.
Perhaps that scratch can be polished out too?.
    .
A somewhat macho solution could be a leather bracer with the cover Velcro'd down? ehehe
    Veeeeery nice watch!

PS - This kind of technology is the best. I refer to the distance gauging device in particular.
It's a very pertinent survival tool and survival means being able to sustain yourself while digital technology makes us very dependent on the outside world.
If a satellite gets zapped by a waring country or spying dispute, virus, malfunction, whatever, then it's back to a more tangible means of existence

I've got a first generation seiko perpetual calendar watch watch similar to this it's a first generation watch I paid £150 untested a few years ago untested and it's been in my cupboard ever since I was offered £200 for it I think it was made in the year 2000 so I'm going to sell it untested
