    This video is why I can't stand fans comparing or arguing over Syd and Davids' guitar skills. Of course David is a legend, but Syd had a very unique approach to the instrument that should not be overlooked. Syd was absolutely killing it here.

    I wish this was much more more more popular and influential because free thinking, experimental and creative types are the best sort of musicians. I prefer them in their very early days.

    • @dinorocker8647
      @dinorocker8647 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well I like the earlier Floyd stuff that was still experimental, but was startin' to have more of a structure to it, basically their pre DSOTM stuf from the early 70's, which had more of a structure, but was still experimental (a la Echoes, One of These Days), but their output from '73-'75 was really good, but I agree wasn't as adventurous, I do think the slightly more experimental Floyd had an interestin' sound to it, even though some of it ain't my cup o' tea.

      i think the kinda crazy thing about syd is that musically and lyrically his style and/or influence is reflected in their later work... musically perhaps 68-71 (pre-dark side) and perhaps lyrically (perhaps not the writing style of the lyrics but at least the themes) more so during dark side and wish you were here.... even syds song Dark Globe is reminiscent of songs like wish you were here pigs on the wing and mother.

      @@mikesaunders4775 No I don’t think it’s creative peak. Dark side of the moon is their creative peak. The album is a masterpiece musically and conceptually. I wouldn’t even call this period their experimental peak because 69-71 was a lot more experimental. I’d say 67 was their commercial peak as a singles band. This concert however tho is very good and Syd seems to be in great form which is at odds with the historical narrative that by this time he was unable to perform etc. I particularly like the version of Set the Controls and Syds playing on that compared to the album release. Either he had a very rapid decline in the weeks after this or creatively his time with the band had come and the real reasons of his dismissal are not fully known or are lost in time.

      I actually saw them play many times during the 69/71 timeframe, and it was indeed a period of adventurous experimentation (Azimuth Coordinators, collaborations with Ron Geesin, Ballet Rambert etc),I'd love to come across more live stuff from from this period as I don't feel the official recorded material of the time does it justice.

    Great video to start today with. I see a lot more of Syd than usual. I don't know why but all those old videos. The Peter Whitehead films always has the camera on Waters and hardly any on Syd. Syd as you see here had great stage presence. He'd bop around and move while playing. It's a bloody tragedy what happened to him. If only he'd have managed to keep it together well into 1968 there would be a hell of a lot more TV footage of Syd's Floyd but I don't think Syd was into appearing on TV shows. I'm guessing it all went pear shaped for him the minute they signed to EMI and became professional. He was then obligated to tour and do all the crap that goes with showbiz. He was great in 1966 playing the odd gig here and there to freaks in London late at night but when on package tour playing to kids out of London up and down the country he must have hated it. Like that guy in Metallica once said this is one job you don't call in sick 😆

    This is probably the best Barrett era Floyd video I have seen. Syd just wanted to paint pictures with his guitar, but as others have said here, the pressures of writing songs as a job got to him. If you love this era of Floyd, suggest you see Nick's band before he quits

      I haven't seen his band actually, but I know he once said that 1967 were, in his eyes their most influential period, the period he enjoyed the most. It's not hard to see why I suppose, they were groundbreaking. Shocking people all over the UK with their unusual sounds, and the years after Syd declined probably depressed all 4 of them to an extent.

    I have always said Pink Floyd became popular inspite of themselves. A band creating music like this just has no fucks to give about how much radio play they got, or where they were on the charts. This does not change when Syd departs either. Pink Floyd was going to be Pink Floyd and either you loved it or didn't...
    Seriously, this is not a band chasing chart position lol
    (To clarify, _I_ love this, but we can all agree mainstream consumption was not a consideration for this band)

    • @MrMallorcaboy
      @MrMallorcaboy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      truth is when syd left floyd couldnt do the 3 minute songs that would get chart positions, what they did do in that field wasnt that great and they admitted as such, they had to find another way to keep the band relevant, which maybe why they became ever so creative, the music they made is suited to sound tracks imo as they can describe every emotion, check out moonhead as the track to the moon landing, also felt a saucerful of secrets would have been perfect in a war film, describing the build up and aftermath, also think the film the shining would be perfect with careful with that axe eugene. floyd were so far out that they just couldnt do the simple stuff everyone else did.
