I love Syd Barrett's wonderful contribution to PInk Floyd! It has made an impact that no other artist but Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin could have on me. I am a guitar player and I love the originality of his riffs. Especially since he was known to sometimes bang his guitar strings until they just downright detuned and broke it. He is a true rockstar and will always be one of my favorites. Does anyone else think the same?
Yesss! I wholeheartedly agree with your assessment of Syd. He is one of my all time fave musicians and an underrated guitarist and songwriter who should get more recognition and praise. His solo albums are great as well!
Isn’t it crazy that Jimmy Page ripped off his Telecaster design from Syd Barrett- so he then changed to the iconic Dragon caster before he came to be a Les Paul guy. Syd was never going to be considered the best guitarist in the world, but he’s right there with Hendrix with how innovative he was and honestly just as difficult to replicate. His strumming method is so unique and got so many noises from that 1 pickup Fender Esquire.
How cool it was to be a teen in the 60s. Got married in the San Fran Love-in in '67 at age 21 and made it to Woodstock in '69. Somehow I survived and am 67 now. Sure have seen and heard a lot, lol. This old hippie is in the pasture now. :)
I'm 40 this year, and I haven't seen squat. It hasn't been because nothing is there, it is because I don't find anything meaningful. Anyway, this is a good song. Joy Division's No Love Lost brought me back here. I know, I know, it sounds nothing like it, but they did a version that kind of gets...experimental.
I'm actually in the process of converting my Tele into an Esquire so I can replicate Syd's guitar. The only thing I'm afraid of is that I'll only want to use that one after it's finished...
Used to do a 20 minute version of this song (full on) with one of the first guitarists in Hawaii (that I knew) who had an echoplex. I was a drummer and boy was I tired at the end. RIP Syd.

I met this song in the 90s, when I bought the album The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn. For a long time I did not hear when I heard on the Doctor Strange's soundtrack. Pink Floyd is my favourite Band ever.
Lovely Bass intro, takes me back to 67 in Singapore , Changi a school swimming pool trip where I heard See Emily Play and Good Vibrations surrounded by girls in bikinis. Never forgot that day.
I know this song almost for all my life and it´s still the greatest music I´ve ever heard. If Pink Floyd had only recorded this one song, they would nevertheless have gone down in history as one of the greatest psychedelic bands ever. Syd was a f*ckin genius.
I prefer this version more than the studio version. Keyboards are much more involved here, the cooperation with the guitar is great. Pitty that Piper has usually shorter versions of tracks than those extended live versions which are imho better. It is not Interstellar only, it is almost of them.
its amazing how much Barrett carried the other 3 in the beginning. Mason's drumming is good- nothing more. Wright's playing sounds forced at times, but Syd's in his own world here. Innovative playing. Just listen to the last 3 minutes- a freak out supreme that sounds in no way pretentious. He was the reason the Floyd were the IT band of 1967's swinging London. It was his band on this day. period.
Agree with the most of what you said, except for Wright part. I think Richard and Syd together carried PF in the beginning, they complimented each other so well both in vocal harmony and instrumentally.
Syd and Rick were the most talented musicians of the band. Nick Mason and Roger Waters happened to be lucky. Waters was barely hanging on as a bass player, but had a strong ego, and was learning the craft of writing songs. Truth is, Syd could have kicked anyone out of the band if he wanted, and had his way, if his ego was stronger.
I wish I could find other music from the mid-to-late 60s swinging and rocking as the first 5 minutes of this song. I envision the kids dancing in the London clubs back in the day. Pink Floyd usually isn't rocking and energetic so I really enjoy this little taste.
i think velvet underground started this movement in new york with live sister ray and it spread to london(eg this and pf nicks boogie and even in germany with guru guru live at ufo and can "down a one way street" or anything can did live between 71-78

Dave and Roger came right into audience with long cords on guitars--we were sitting on the floor as no seats--about only 100 ppl. Saw them in SF in 71 and they played IO also.
Syd saw a documentary and the Pink Floyd awards ceremony on TV saw that they named him, and his sister witnessed that, his sister says that syd remembered everything but he did not have that euphoria or anything he knew about his past , the same thing happened to my cousin Lalo who woke up after 40 years of the LSCD AND WHEN HE WAKE UP ALREADY HIS MOM MY AUNT AND HIS FATHER ESTEVAN WERE NO LONGER ALIVE , a trip in the lscd can last year and years but when to wake up it's sad and heartbreaking.

I think that Syd definitely has moments where he's just incoherent and dull and then points where he introduces really perceptive, weird and interesting ideas into the mix. Among the songs they played: “Main Theme from More” which they only did a handful of times. “Biding My Time”, which they had only done as part of the Man and the Journey suite. “Heartbeat Pig Meat”, which was the only known live performance. “the Violent Sequence”, which they only played a handful of times. This later developed into “Us and Them” on Dark Side of the Moon. “The Amazing Pudding”, a live embryonic version of what was to become “Atom Heart Mother”. You saw an EXCEEDINGLY rare set.

I go back and forth between this and the last as my favorite. On any given day this could be no. 1. 3. Feb 1967. Abbey Road studios. The finished album version released on Piper at the Gates of Dawn. 4. Feb 1967 Abbey Road. Take 2. This is the basic track and basis of the album version without the overdubs. Released on the 40th anniversary version of Piper. 5. March 1967 Abbey Road. Take 6. For whatever reason, the band decided to record a short version (5 minutes long). This was TRULY innovative and ground breaking at the time. Admittedly, it is challenging to the casual listener. Casual listeners want the 3 minute pop song where the boy gets the girl. Elite listeners want the 80 minute concerto, without any electronics. Pink Floyd carved their own niche. Perhaps you should stick to something mainstream.

I am impressed with all this research info. I saw the band 3 times in the summer of '68 and 1 time in '71 S.F.
