Pazienza, 32, defeated Duran, 43, for the second time in six months on Saturday night, retaining his International Boxing Council super middleweight title with a unanimous decision before a pay-per-view audience and a near sellout of 10,382 at the Atlantic City Convention Center.
Duran (Hands of Stone) began fast, but Pazienza (Mouth of Chatter, Head of Granite, take your pick) came on strong in the latter half of the fight, connecting solidly to Duran's head with ripping left hooks and right uppercuts. The scorecards were emblematic of Pazienza's dominance - 116-112, 117-111, 118-110.
Pazienza also beat Duran last June 25 in Las Vegas, Nev., in a controversial decision.
With his trainer, Kevin Rooney, yelling "Willie Pep, Willie Pep" from the corner - evoking the name of one of the sport's great champions - Pazienza came out in the eighth round sharp and effective, banging Duran with right crosses and turning him in the clinches. By the ninth, he was telling Duran to "Go ahead" in the corner. As Duran flailed away at his midsection, Pazienza yelled, "You can't hurt me, you can't hurt me."
All of this infuriated Duran, who caught Pazienza after the bell with several punches. Referee Steve Smoger practically had to throw Pazienza back to his corner as he went after Duran.
The two embraced at the post-fight news conference. Pazienza thanked Duran for making him $750,000 and Duran thanked the champion for putting $619,000 into his account. But not before he alleged that Pazienza had used body-building drugs, a charge that Pazienza, brawny through what he calls excessive weight training, is sick of hearing.
"He never fought a guy like that," said Duran's interpreter. "He just fight like he's got some dope in his body."
Duran put off any retirement plans, insuring the post-fight gathering that his mental faculties remain sharp even if his physical skills sometimes fail to comply.
Duran was not embarrassed, but he was so far removed from the man who once bulled Sugar Ray Leonard into corners with hooks to the body, that one did not know him. His muscularity was never defined, but on Saturday his midsection sagged over his trunks, like a pile of garments spilling out of a suitcase.
"To me, it's kind of tragic," said Rooney, who once sparred with Duran during his prime, "because he was a great fighter. I could debate people that Duran was the greatest lightweight of all time. But he shouldn't be fighting anymore, not like this."

Paz said recently that no boxer ever had ever hit to the body as hard as the hands of stone. Quite a compliment even though Duran was 43 years old. Duran was also very compassionate out of the ring when he visited his dying nemesis and friend...Esteban DeJesus in the hospital.

Yea Duran was in his early 40's. Sugar Ray Robinson boxed until he was 44, had over 200 fights, and you think Duran is some kind of God for boxing in an era with rampant steroid abuse to help keep the hormones of a 20 year old even at 40, and you want to claim that Duran was the one with the handicap here. Duran would have never boxed again if he had gone through what Panziena did.
I mean what Vinny did, i am usually not even on the side of the Italian boxers, i love Sugar Ray Robinson, or the mexicans, Canelo, etc. But man what Vinny was made from was a completely different species man. Duran (at that age and weight) didn't have enough energy to outwork Pazienza, or enough power to hurt him. There was literally no way for Duran to win.

And Duran hurt him in the last few minuets. If the bout was for 15 rounds , as they were in Duran's early career, Pazienza would have been KO'd in the latter rounds by a man over 10yrs. his senior. Not a bad performance for the 43 year old Duran.

Ali, Louis, Morales, Roy Jones, Tyson, Holifield, Arguello, etc, "ensuciaron" su carrera haciendo "peleas lamentables" más allá de su mejor momento y perdiendo ante tipos que en su mejor momento ni de sparring le hubieran servido.
Duran perdió esta pelea siendo competitivo, pero la anterior la ganó y se la robaron los jueces, y un año después le robaron también la primera pelea con Camacho.

Durán en su prime ,con sus altos y bajos , pulverizó el peso ligero ,subió de golpe 2 categorías de peso ,a vencer al mejor libra por libra del momento ,y uno de los mejores welters de la historia , después coronándose campeón en super welter , mediano ,y un peso ligero ,que subió hasta el peso medio ,y en su primer pelea enfrento al Beast Master de la categoría ,y que estaba imparable noqueando a todo lo que le ponían enfrente ,el legendario maravilla Marvin Hagler ,y Durán le dió una pelea muy competitiva y dura ,dónde a pesar de que perdió ,a Hagler lo hizo ver mal ,le metió las manos por 15 rounds ,le dejo media cara inflada ,y Hagler tuvo que salir como loco los 2 últimos rounds ,por qué hasta eso momento , Durán era quien iba ganando la pelea ,y aún así , Hagler ganó por un solo punto...
En dónde comparas a ese fenómeno con Chávez ,que después de subir 1 sola categoría ,de dónde estuvo como campeón sólido ,fue una vergüenza y todas las peleas importantes las perdió (y por golpizas).

Esta pelea se hizo en 168 libras y Chavez jamas se arriesgo a subir tanto, ni se expuso como Durán a combatir con 40 o mas años ante tipos 10, 12 o 20 años mas jovenes que él.
A Durán no le cuidaron la carrera ni le evitaron riesgos, ni le inflaron.
Chavez en 1995 subia a 168 libras a enfrentar a este mismo Pazienza y perdia de igual o peor forma.
