Marvin Hagler vs Roberto Duran (Highlights)

  • Hagler: "It seemed everybody was disappointed that I didn't knock him out. I felt that way myself. But he wasn't that vulnerable to a knockout. It was hard to hit him with a solid punch....You don't barrel in there on a guy like Roberto Duran. Why take unnecessary punishment unless you have to? I'd been effective and was winning the fight, so it isn't like I had to go in there and take the punishment to bomb him out."
Duran: "He came to tear my head off, but when he saw that I could hit him hard, with strength, he got scared and became a coward. That's why he didn't take too many chances and mix it up with me. Everyone was saying he was a destroyer, but when he hit me, he didn't do anything to me. His punches absolutely did me no damage. He got scared every time he threw a jab because I could get my right in under it. That's why he held off so much."
    Hagler was a 4 to 1 favorite.
Hagler was guaranteed $5 million, and Duran was guaranteed $1.5 million. Each also received a percentage of the revenue.
The fight was shown on closed-circuit television in 400 locations with three million seats. There was also pay-per-view television in Chicago and Los Angeles. HBO and NBC had delayed rights.
There was a crowd of 14,600 in the outdoor stadium at Caesars Palace.
After 13 rounds, Duran was ahead by one point on two scorecards and even on the third. Hagler, with his left eye swollen and cut, came on strong in the last two rounds to win the fight.
After winning seven consecutive title defenses by knockout, Hagler was forced to go the distance for the first time as champion.
Unofficial AP scorecard: 145-142 Hagler; unofficial Los Angeles Times scorecard: 146-141 Hagler.

Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Fair use is a use permitted by copyright statute that might otherwise be infringing. Non-profit, educational or personal use tips the balance in favor of fair use
    Fair use
Additionally, the fair use defense to copyright infringement was codified for the first time in section 107 of the 1976 Act. Fair use was not a novel proposition in 1976, however, as federal courts had been using a common law form of the doctrine since the 1840s (an English version of fair use appeared much earlier). The Act codified this common law doctrine with little modification. Under section 107, the fair use of a copyrighted work is not copyright infringement, even if such use technically violates section 106. While fair use explicitly applies to use of copyrighted work for criticism, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, or research purposes, the defense is not limited to these areas. The Act gives four factors to be considered to determine whether a particular use is a fair use: the purpose and character of the use (commercial or educational, transformative or reproductive); the nature of the copyrighted work (fictional or factual, the degree of creativity); the amount and substantiality of the portion of the original work used; and the effect of the use upon the market (or potential market) for the original work.

In my opinion, this was one of the greatest fights of all time. This video highlights the blows; but if you have time, watch the entire fight. The defensive skill of these two fighters is phenomenal. Each are masters at foreseeing, slipping, and ducking punches while maintaining pursuit. It was a very close fight. Duran's experience and knowledge shows; and he really has no faults here, other than being smaller and past his prime. Hagler had advantages of reach, age, size; but it was the overall strength of Hagler that proved to be the difference. Duran couldn't muscle him inside like he could with almost all his other opponents. You'll also notice that Hagler is much quicker, both in movement and hand speed, than people gave him credit for. Full 15 rounds of action, perfect offense and defense and determination from both fighters. Great, great fight.
Rest In Pease Marvelous, a great champion and a great human being. He once said that this was his favorite fight. Mine too.

You can see that he doesn't use it nearly as much for the remainder of the fight and when he does there isn't a lot behind it. Take nothing away from Hagler, he is one of my favorites, but Duran just may have kept this an extremely close fight with only one hand for most of it. Testament to his greatness as well.

Duran became a lightweight champion in 1972 by 1978 1979 Duran decides to move up in weight and challenge Leonard 1980 was my opinion Duran's last great year of fighting where if Hagler or Hearns fought him that year by far he would have won just like he beat Leonard the first fight but Sugar Ray being as gifted as he was he was able to change up his style to all speed and footwork in Leonard-Duran 2 the infamous no mas fight where Duran quit because he knew Sugar Ray was gonna beat him easy that fight never go into the ring and brawl with Duran he was to good at that you have to punch and run with a guy like that and RayLeonard did that and easily won the other greats like Hagler or Hearns could not do that although can fight southpaw but made a big mistake not fighting southpaw against Leonard in 1987 cause if he did he would have won the decision but Leonard won cause he outsmarted and outpointed Hagler another strategy Leonard was good at!!!! Leonard was not the strongest or the best boxer but in his prime he was the smartest and fastest with jobs and whether he hurts you or not it builds points and impresses the judges out of all the fab 4 Duran, Hagler, Hearns, Leonard Sugar Ray takes the trophy home!!!!!

Wow, how can someone with the size of Duran, fights a marvelous machine for 15 rounds??? He uses pure intelligence. Duran moves into Haglers body so that Hagler does not have the necessary distance to throw the punches with full power. Then gets out to throw is combination and then moves back in, towards Hagler's body. Just a genious. This is why Hagler could not punch as hard as he did with Mugabhi. Duran also combines stepping back away from Hagler's punching range, just to breath. Then he goes back very close so that Hagler is forced to punch sideways and upper cuts because he cannot through his hooks and straight rights. Then his head's movements with the rolling of the shoulders. This Duran was in a different level. So clever!

Yes he was, Marvin was afflicted with a negative reaction to his fights, he was so good that he would destroy fighters who were in their own zone considered great, once Marvin dismantled them commentators would say that maybe the challenger was over rated, I had the misfortune of being a young powerful 22 years young former Marine back in 1979, I was talked into sparring with a man they called Stuff, I was instructed to throw my right hand as I had power, I did, Stuff said, whooo the kid can punch, and the rest is my history with Marvin, I still have the scar, my nose was changed for ever, Marvin has a brother, Robbie Simms, he could have been champ if he had stayed in the jr. Middle weight class, anyway, Marvin was in my opinion capable of defeating all other middleweight of his era, before and forget today, I think a young Jones could have made some waves but in the end Marvin was a beast.
