    Every former champion thinks they have one more great fight in them, some pushing themselves far past their limit and continuing on well beyond their prime. Many thought the same of the legendary Hands of Stone, Roberto Duran. Duran was set to fight the current champion, Iran The Blade Barkley. Barkley was in his prime, being ten years younger than Duran. At 6’1, he stood 6 inches taller, with a 6 inch reach advantage. To top it all off, Duran would be fighting for the middleweight title, 3 divisions above his natural weight class.
    Duran was no stranger to overcoming long odds. He thought he could win, now all he had to do was pull off this impossible task, and prove it.

      On the inside he's one of the best in the history of the sport.
      The "problem" with that, is that his other qualities are often overlooked. Duran was in fact a very well-rounded boxer.
      His defence is top notch, he was an awesome counter puncher, had great footwork, heavy hands, and he has a very high ring IQ. Obviously, otherwise he wouldn't have been able to win those fights against naturally bigger guys who were much younger.
      Aside from that, he was also a very _cunning_ fighter who had a big bag of tricks. He knew how to fight right on the edge.
      There's a fantastic breakdown of his style on Lee Wylie's channel, and I highly recommend it.

      Considering that Barkley took this fight personal and wanted to get revenge on Duran for smashing his buddy Davey Moore, immediately after the fight they became super super friendly. They both gained respect for each other over the fight. Duran realised that Barkley wasn't just some fast and hard puncher - there were layers to his game and he had prepared well for Duran's various tactics. Barkley on the other hand realised how much depth there was to Duran's craft - even after preparing counters for Duran's usual habits, he still found himself outsmarted numerous times. He also probably wasn't prepared for just how hard Duran could still hit.

      Your right. He did adjust many times. He was the Duran of old. No one expected that. Thats why Barkley, the overwhelming favorite going in, said Duran was the best. By the end of the fight, Duran was catching Barkley with devastating punches and Barkley could barely get his jab in. If they still fought 15, Duran probably would have ended it by KO. Or at least knocked him down again. He adjusted to the point of making Iran throw the hook, miss and counter with combinations. Great, smart, brutal, exciting fight. Two warriors. Two of the best. Technically there are some really good fighters today but they don't have the same heart or stamina. Tyson is old school, and fighting at 54 is remarkable. Incredible. Always my favorite since I was a kid. Just everything a true fighter should be. The aspects of his story some may say are flaws only serve to illustrate the glory of what he was. Beyond that his profound energy elevated the moments and rivalries he was a part of in ways that could have never been achieved without him.

    This was one of Duran’s greatest wins! As a Duran fan, I was a little nervous due to the fact that Barkley beat up Hearns who beat up Duran years earlier. It was inspirational to say the least! Manos De Piedra was on fire that night. He trained hard for this fight and you can tell he looked in great shape for this fight.

    Duran was legendary during his lightweight career. Back then Boxing historians who saw greatness in the 1930-40-50 thru the 90s put Duran as one of the greatest ever top 5. They SAW those fighters back in the day. I guess there opinions hold a ton of weight compared to anyone on the Internet. END

    I was a senior in high school and this fight captivated me. By then, Duran was old news, his best days having come when I was in early elementary school. He had moments since then, but when you see him losing to Robbie Sims, you figure he's yesterday's news. To watch him do what he did made him seem larger than life to me at the time. We were talking about this for days, mimicking the combo he knocked Barkley down with, what a superb performance. This is a treasure.

    • @fredflinsten449
      @fredflinsten449 4 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Duran's defence was extremely subtle and a great display the sweet science in textbook form; very different to the flashy defensive movements of someone like Mayweather or Canelo. It's something a viewer only notices if they themselves have been boxing for years and better yet competing and analysing fights/fighters. The average fan watches for the athleticism while the boxers watch for the sweet science
