A Shout Out! Thank You To Kevin Miller for being the first to tell me about this New Walmart oil filter. Thank You!👍🙏😊 Oil Filter Friday, Watch a New Automotive oil filter inspection video every Friday on this TH-cam channel.
You can do it. I went to 14k on my 10k filter and I cut it open expecting it to be caved in but no. Didn't rip, tear, collapse and my oil pressure didn't change. 5k is a bit of a waste unless your huge v8 engine has a teeny tiny filter or something.
I change the filter n oil on my Toyota Sienna mini van religiously every 10k running Quaker state or Super tech conventional oil. 345k miles later, she runs like a top!!! Btw, owners manual says every 10k miles. On my 2016 Camry I go 15k with synthetic oil. If your not running a performance car, what are you doing changing oil every 3-5 k, oil and filter technology has come a long way.
@@elihernandez330 yr of car is 2004. I found the synthetic's smaller molecule slips pasts the cyl rings and I have to add oil btwn oil changes. Also, the synthetic will go 20k, but since I'm changing it at 10k, I don't need it. The couple of bucks goes toward the filter. :)
they're just as good as any. A $22 full synthetic oil change is doable from Supertech. Note: i just bought 3 jugs of their oil and the price is now $17 and change each.
200k on 03' F-150. I use advanced protection oil and the more expensive of thier filters. The motor is strong and quiet. 5 stars for your $. Nothin bad
That chunk of glue was not a normal thing as could easily clog up oil passagesboth in the block and in the VVT systems. After seeing the chunk in the filter media I would say the filter is not worth cheaping out on.
@@TonicofSonic It's on the dirty side of the filter, and it's stuck to the media, so it's unlikely to come off in any case. I seriously doubt it would cause any issues. And literally every brand of filter at every price point has had quality issues at one point or another. These are made by Champion, who also make some AC Delco and Mobil 1 filters, for example.
I've sold filters for 44 yrs. My Rep has told me the #1 determining factor of the price of a spin on filter is the quality of the paper. I would highly discourage anyone going 10k miles with any oil filter, let alone 20k. That's insane.
I change my oil every 5,000 miles and the oil filter every 10,000 miles. I use Supertech products without hesitation. I also add Ryslone fuel system cleaner to my vehicles on the second oil change interval. My camry and Frontier perrrr like kittens.
People dont understand that just cutting one open and not seeing chunks of crap does not mean the filter is still good. Sending filters and oil out for analysis (wix filters) they are about done at 5 or 6 thousand unless you use a bypass filter. Never go 10 or 20 thousand miles on a standard filter.
Exactly!!!! Just use a good filter, such as NAPA gold or Wix, or Motorcraft for Fords or Toyota for Toyotas. Then do regular oil changes. I typically do every 4,000 miles for my mileage eater work Camry, and 3,000 on my F150 and Wife's Escape.
The silicon anti-drain back valve is better than rubber but not double the price better. $5.97 is still actually a great price for a good oil filter. This new super-tech MP filter looks like it's the exact same thing as the k&n select which is also new to the market and only sold at Wal-Mart I believe, hmmmm. I actually just bought the k&n for $9.97 because they were out of mobile-1 . If I had seen this video beforehand, I would have bought the super-tech equivalent and saved $4.
Have used super tech filters for over a decade with no troubles. Oil changes with super tech oil or Costco oil or Mobil 1 or pennzoil (oil brand doesn’t matter) every 5,000 miles. Easy to remember. Easy to do. Cheap insurance. I know you could probably go 10,000 but I rather enjoy doing the oil change at 5k.
I've gone 10k on a filter as a test and took it apart. Didn't see anything of concern. Nothing falling apart, no major chunks or debris, valve looked fine - no deformity
You obviously have light duty driving. 10000 could be fine in your case. Not all cars and driving styles and environments are the same. There will be a disclaimer some where about light duty driving only. Like there is on these sealed transmissions.
So basically the silicone anti drain back valve can stand the heat of the engine for longer, and the filter itself is glued onto the end caps to handle the extra pressure as the filter becomes more dirty over time. Not bad at all, ive been using the regular ST filters on my 07 Odyssey for years and never an issue.
I think they are a pretty good buy as long as they are the ones that have the metal end caps. I dont like the felt end caps. Thanks for watching and your comment.👍😊
yeah pretty much most newer cars recommend you change the oil the first time then replace the filter with the second oil change. same with the cabin and air filters. clean debris on the first and replace on the second time. well at least thats what my honda says on the codes.
How can any manufactuer garantee a specific number of miles? An older engine is going to contaminate the oil faster than a new one just as driving conditions will affect the state of the oil. It is all silly marketing.
It's all an advertising gimmick. They know no one is going to push a claim against them. No way you could actually PROVE that mileage in court. They'd just say you were lying about it and really there's nothing to do about it. You're just out a bunch of money in court and attorney cost's. WAAAAAAAY more than simply buying a new filter and oil change and likely more than a new engine if it failed SOLEY(and that again can't really be proved) because of an oil filter.
Walmart Supertech Oil Filters are manufactured by Champion Technologies a firm based in the USA. Just like their lubricants their oil filters are made with high-quality material meeting all the required standards. An ST filter will not fail you and it will serve you for a long time without needing any replacement.
champion used to make their filters. 10,000 miles is plenty for me. i change at 3-3500 miles. Walmart just needed an excuse to double the price. 99% efficiency suits me fine.
The more expensive filter is better and heavier because the filter material will be greater. Best filter I ever used? Bosch Distance Plus. I change the oil when semi black and most honey color gone. If you have the GM 3.6 change the oil at 4000 always.
I've always used synthetic blends, OE filters, and change around 5,000 ish miles. Different strokes for different folks, but to me an oil change is cheap and easy insurance, and I'm not going over 7,000-8,000 with anything regardless of the "up to" advertised.
I agree. 5k miles plus or minus. Oil brand doesn’t matter too much. Filter doesn’t matter too much. If you shop around can get an oil change done for $20 and half hour of your time (and the wife leaves you alone for that half hour ) that’s a winner.
Problem I've been seeing it people have no clue how much better the synthetic actually is and still follow ancient old advice designed to market the over use of a product from 1920. Now I'm talking full synthetic not a blend of regular and synthetic. Why buy regular with a quarter the performance for not much cheaper anyway? I've been running 15,000 between oil changes from 30k to now 170k with no problems at all and zero oil burn in 15k. Anything less than 10 is definitely just a waste and adding to pollution with full synthetic. And yes the filter matters if you get a crap one that the media falls apart on you with higher mileage changes. And no the oil isn't real black even at 15k. And I'm running it in an 08 Toyota engine that's super sensitive to dirty oil with the VVT system. And no there's no lifter noise period. Yes the engine still isles perfect and has never had anything cleaned or replaced. Everything, and I mean everything, is still factory unchanged and uncleaned except the paint, one belt, brake pads, alternator was still good but replaced, tires, and struts. Sorry but low mileage changes are bad advice for our environment, your time, and isn't going to be a significant improvement in the performance of your engine. Just a time proven fact. Now with regular oil and cheap filters? Yeah, you'd have to change it within 5k max. Even 10,000 is conservative intervals with full synthetic. Most likely your car will be ruined from a faulty theft control system or catch fire from all the electrical garbage people fall for these days which is totally unnecessary to have on a car anyway and not even they much more convenient. Those proximity keys sure are a lot more convenient for the professional car thieves though.
My work car is a 2006 Taurus with the pushrod V6. I change the oil every 7500 miles and use Motorcraft filters. 167,000 miles and by then the oil is dirty but doesn't smell like carbon, blowby, or gasoline. Two of the other cars are V8 garage queens and get the oil changed once a year. 20K miles on a filter is just asking for it.
Right! Good products all around. Supper Tech products are great quality. I've been using them for 3 years, now, and they perform as promised. I'll gladly pay $6.00 for a 20000 mile oil filter as opposed to the Mobil 1 for $13.00. Super Tech products are great quality. I've been using them for 3 years, now, and they perform as promised. I'll gladly pay $6.00 for a 20000 mile oil filter as opposed to the Mobil 1 for $13.00.
My 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 5.2 V8 is still going strong for 29 years without engine or transmission overhaul. Right now it is over 428,000 miles. Several years ago, I've used conventional oil then blue smoke came out from tail pipe as I didn't like so, I switched 5W-30 Mobil One Synthetic oil (no high mileage or no extended). I changing oil every 6 months Spring and Fall since retired is fewer driving or change at 5,000 miles but not beyond 7,000 or 8,000 miles plus, added engine restoration solution with Royal Purple oil filter for years (changing oil filter to max 10,000 miles). I've reduced engine thermostat to 15 degrees (180 instead of 195 degrees) to prolong engine life without any problem or always passed smog check. Also, I've used mostly Chevron 87 octane gas of trying not get a cheap gas brand too.
The 1980s 650cc Yamaha motorcycle had a piece of wire mesh as the oil "filter" and was still very reliable. It probably helped that there was no rev limiter, so they built the engine better with roller bearings for the crankshaft. Also see the Project Farm videos for his comparison testing.
There are many small airplanes flying with certified engines that have no spin-on oil filter, just a screen. The screen is much finer than what you would find in a boxer VW motor. Oil change interval for plane was 25hours with screen 50hours with filter. As a side data point. Aviation Spin on oil filters $38ea, Aeroshell oil $8qt and Champion spark plugs $38ea x 8
Filter element mass: 32g for the MP vs 30g for the ST... I bet that is due to the glue present on the MP and not on the ST. Otherwise they do look nearly identical but it's hard to tell by looks. A proper test must be done to indicate any difference in performance and longevity.
I was really impressed when the Supertech filters came out.they were superior to the Fram but I've noticed that one filter will have steel end caps and steel center tube and another filter same part number but newer will be fiber end caps with plastic center tube.so while i think you should be able to pick up your favorite filter and know what your getting it doesn't seem so with Supertech.
@@WhipCityWrencher i agree and for a while it seemed like the Super Tech was the one to choose over the AC Delco since it had superior components but not anymore
I noticed the blue plug on the pressure relief valve for both are not centered in the stamped steel spring housing, and I wonder if this allows leaking even at normal pressures since the plug is not centered on the hole? Is the blue plastic plug tapered into the seat or it it simply flat? I have one of these filters that is the same, and I'm kinda hesitant to use it. Thanks.
Hi JF, I dug it out, and I'm looking at it right now the blue part is an all-plastic one-piece that has a flat top that covers the hole, with a spring underneath. The flat blue top is bigger than the hole, (slightly overlaps the hole) it looks to seal okay. I don't see a problem with this bypass valve. The reason it's not centered is because you can move it a little from side to side, but no matter how I much I move the one I have, it still covers the hole. If I remember and I run into this bypass valve again in a future video, I'll mention it.
@@WhipCityWrencher Thank you so much WCR, appreciate your reply. I guess I'm a bit OCD with filters, as years ago I was part of a service chain that oversaw buying hundreds/thousands of cases of oil and other filters, and the worst I saw was an entire lot of FL-1 equivalents (made by Wix with Phillips 66 branding) that the mounting plate hole was completely smooth!... Not a lick of threads. Back to this filter. Have you seen its Fram FD4967 equivalent? It's this exact filter painted orange. Seems other filters in the FD lineup are made by Champion too. The FD4967 has a cellulose and synthetic media and they rate it for 7500 miles. Looks as if Champion labs is awfully busy these days. Again thank you, and thanks for your channel.
@@JF-xq6fr No threads Wow, well at least that's an easy one to catch. LOL🤣, You got to wonder how did those get by. Yes, I have seen the Fram FD filters, I opened one up a while back but a different size, link below. Thanks for the info!👍 th-cam.com/video/scM5LnSR1Uk/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=WhipCityWrencher
I've seen 10k mile oil analysis lab results and the oil has started to become acidic. This isn't going to be made better with a fancy oil filter. I don't know where anyone gets the idea that ten thousand or more mikes is a good idea. Amsoil has some outrageous claims to how long you can run their oil but how much money do you think you are saving? 5k oil changes for me
Conventional vs. synthetic also makes a big difference. I wouldn't go more than 5K on conventional oil or a cheap filter. Synthetic oil and a good filter and I think 7.5K (like a lot of owners manuals suggest) is fine.
You failed to mention what oil. I can be sure it wasn't any full synthetic, I did 15k mile OCIs for 10 years after I started using full synthetics. Blackstone labs said my oil at 15k, (with a filter halfway and top off of full synthetic oil) was good for maybe 3k more. However, cars with warranties won't allow it, and I no longer drive over 22,000 miles a year, so 5k or 6 months it is per my warranty.
@@lonniebeal6032 there is a guy in the hvac profession that did some testing using the amsoil bypass filter system and amsoil in his testing. His results showed that the filter had no effect on wear metals and the ultimate determining factor for oci was TBN "oil acidity". If you'd like I can find the video and post a link. Synthetic oil isn't a very specific term legally particularly in the US. Hydrocracked mineral oil can be considered "synthetic" legally in the USA. There are many different types of synthetic oil groups and being synthetic in itself doesn't mean anything about service life. Many companies like amsoil don't disclose what type of specific base oil they actually use in their products. Starting with a high TBN (Total base number) may give a longer service life but there are many other considerations as well like sheer stability, fuel contamination, volatility, and so on. A filter is mostly just a safeguard against larger contaminants that shouldn't happen unless something is faulty to begin with. The biggest benefit in synthetic oil is its uniformity or consistency in viscosity. Synthetics tend to have better characteristics in cold weather or extreme heat depending on what they are designed for. A racing oil may be able to withstand extreme heat but may not be intended for long oci's. Some ester based oils can even be hygroscopic making them not ideal for long oci's.
I used to hate the hell out of Fram. They got bought out in 2014 by trico. Honeywell no longer makes them. Puralator has been having tearing issues and they are my favorite filter brand but I won’t run them anymore until they fix them. The Fram ultra is one of the best filters you can get now besides an amsoil filter. The lowest tier Fram I would still stay away from but everything is great. The ultra synthetic is the same filter as the Fram titanium at advance. Just different case and mark up. Even after learning this I was still hesitant on running Fram for months but they did improve drastically with new ownership. It’s all I run now in my vehicles with valvoline oil and redline in my 04 Denali. The cheaper supertech I will say is built better then the first 2 tiers of Fram filters.
Wal mart brands have to keep a decent quality due to the fact that there’s places who rely solely on their wal mart for shopping. That’s why Wal marts tools have actually been proven to be damn good quality for the price.
@@TheChrisgralnic i got a set of hyper tough wrenches and damn if they don't have a better hand feel than the old craftsman wrenches i had that got stolen.
I use Supertech filters in my 4cyl 2001 Toyota Camry, with semisynthetic oil. Nothing wrong with the Supertech filter, but by no means go further than 5000 miles on any low end or no-name oil filter. Anybody who offers a discount price oil change with dino oil is giving you a no-name filter. They're not cheating you. They've given you what you have paid for - a conventional oil change good for 5000 miles at the most. Less if you do mostly short trip and stop-and-go driving,
@@WhipCityWrencher More than that, 5000 miles is a maximum with dino oil and a low-end filter. Jeepers, one of the tire chains where I live offers a $19.95 oil change just to get you in the door. Anyone can afford that.
thank for the demo comparison, I won't buy a Walmart oil filter ever again. I decide to go with the napa oil filter to pay litter more know quality is there.
They (marketing) like to put similar factoids (20,000 miles) like a similar competing product. Would I do it? I might go 5000 but I do more short 2 mile trips and the oil is getting very smelly with gasoline and doesn't feel slippery enough. No. And I don't go by time either. I look at the dipstick. Sometimes more than 10 seconds. Is that weird?
If your smell fuel in the oil then I think it's time to change it out. I agree, I wouldn't go by what numbers they put on oil and filters either. Thanks for sharing!👍
My Walmart had a bunch of empty spots as well with these filters lol that's why I'm looking them up and came across this video BTW thank you for this video!!! It's probably because the all the local lube shops are buying them all up and charging high prices for people who don't know
Your Welcome James, At the time I made the video, they had just started putting these on the Walmart shelves. You may have some empty oil filter shelves at your Walmart now, for a different reason, seems to be a lot of empty shelves around the country as there seems to be a shortage of truckers. Glad you liked the video😊🙌
Another article I found on Super Tech oil filters: However, Walmart has seen it fit to once again shift gears, this time taking everything they learned from Wix and partnering with Champion Laboratories. At this point, it is extremely difficult to find an oil filter that provides all of the benefits that come standard with SuperTech. Granted, the difference is between $2 and some change compared to $6. But over the course of your vehicle’s lifespan, that can add up and is just an unnecessary waste otherwise. On top of that, as a Wal-Mart specific brand, being able to find a SuperTech oil filter is easier than ever.
There really isn't a best, just like asking what is the best oil? If you dont mind spending the money Fram Titanium is a very good oil filter, for about ten bucks is the Fram Ultra at Walmart. These two oil filters are well made and have good micron ratings plus they say that they are Made in the USA., another one I like is the Purolator Boss oil filter. There are others but these three are probably my top pics right now.
5 quarts of synthetic oil loses its viscosity and is extremely dirty at 4,000 miles. 10,000 is a big stretch, and 20,000 is pure stupidity for normal stop and go drivers. Enjoyed the video, Thanks!!
@@leeyates290 l follow my owners manual, but also take into account all the idle time during the cold Winter months. 4,500 is my max, but my manual says 7,500.. In my opinion, the 10,000 and 20,000 mile filters are a reflection of a greener society and I have absolutely have no problem with energy conservation.
@@TaintedMojo Lololo.no way I would reuse an oil filter ever . Worked in automotive gm dealership for a decade before getting to industrial maintenance/electronics. Maintenance and using good lubricants and filters and keeping temp low is the key to long life . Re using filters you have no idea if the flow is reduced which I suspect it will be and cause the filter to by pass
Oh, by the way guys, for those of you that have riding mowers most of the engines use expensive OEM oil filters. I have found the ST3614 will fit most mower engines. I personally been using this filter on a 17hp and 25hp Kohler and a Briggs 27hp engine. They are presently just under 3 bucks but that may change.
Use anything that will fit and has the same features. I used a filter for my Toyota. And motorcraft filters fl-400 maybe. It's a 3/4-16 thread and a 60 ish mm o ring. It can be as tall as will fit but will take a bit longer to prime if it's a whopper. Briggs v twin platinum ( intek)
I would like to share my personal experience on this issue. By no means is it an extensive or scientific trial. I bought a new 2003 Mazda (Ranger) with 3.0 V-6 and when it went out of warranty at 36K miles, I started it on a yearly oil change using Mobil 1 Extended Performance and a Motorcraft filter. Yearly mileage averages about 10K. The truck currently has 183K on it. I recently put valve cover gaskets on it. The valve springs, heads, and valve covers looked pristine. No sludge or accumulations of any kind. Not scientific but just wanted to share. Oil consumption has not changed. It uses about 1 pint per change. I never add any oil.
Great video! For $3 I will run on my Toyota for 5K, but definitely not the 10k or the 20k the boxes advertise. Not sure if I would want to run any filter 20k. Oil and filter is cheap compared to the cost of an engine.
I've ran the 10k to two 7k intervals simply because I didn't have the filter after the first change and said "eh fuck it" and I cut it open and the media wasn't collapsing in, tearing, or becoming brittle. I cut it with a razor and it was still soft. Oil pressure didn't change either.
Last year in the summer I called a phone number to inquire about the Mobil1 oil filters. Champion Labs answered the phone and I talked to someone there. He informed me that they were making the Mobil 1 filter. He also told me they made the Super Tech oil filter. He told me that they were identical except the gauge of the metal was thicker on the Mobil 1 filter. The Mobil 1 costs about $12, whereas the Super Tech about $3. Since then I have been using Super Tech. Who is making these filters today? Good question, I’ll bet Champion Labs still is! Thanks…Jim
Supertech is made by Champion lab. Mobil used to be made by Champion Lab. Now is made by Mann and Hummel Check out this link. www.mobil.com/en/lubricants/for-personal-vehicles/our-products/mobil-limited-warranties/mobil-1-extended-performance-oil-filter-limted-warranty
Just a note to all of you with turbos on your cars. You better change that oil every 5000. Turbos do NOT like dirty oil. A couple bucks for new oil and a filter is a lot cheaper than replacing single or dual turbos. You have been warned.
Did you have a turbo? Did you know you should not engage a turbo for 3 minutes after startup, or turn the engine off for 3 minutes after the turbo has been disengaged? Did you also know that the only way a turbo will survive past 60,000 miles is with a water cooled center bearing? I did 15k OCIs on 2 Dodge turbos, well over 100k miles when I sold them for different cars just because I wanted something else. You don't know anything.
The red mark and green mark on the filter media seem to indicate a different filtration micron. Long life filters often filter worse so they don't clog as fast.
@@WhipCityWrencher Best way to increase filter service life is to add surface area anyway, which obviously they are not doing... Seems one might need to ask Champion Labs, a subsidiary of Wix.
If I’m doing 3,000 mile intervals I’m willing to use cheaper oils and filters that are off brand. As long as they meet requirements. It’s only 3,000 miles too. Brand names you’re paying for their advertising.
At least they’re not identical, I thought they were going to be. They do seem like decent filters though. Super Tech has come a long way since the 90’s
When I was in high school I used to be able to do a oil change on my 1985 bmw 528e for $13.00 with super tech. I knew it wasn’t the greatest but I would just change it like every 2k for the price. I loved that car
By adding a slightly better anti drain back valve? 🤨 Lol. 😆 It’s the same damn filter. You’d think they would at least add a few inches of filter media or something. 2 grams of glue? That’s IT???? 🤨🤔
I wonder if it's still a cellulose based filtering media. I know with all other premium filters made for longer oil changes with synthetic oil use the filtering media is some sort of synthetic material that can filter out smaller particles than what this Supertech filter can do.
I pay more for the NAPA gold or platinum filters when on sale made by WIX just to get the peace of mind and more pleats and a coil spring pressure relief valve. Cost of an engine or longer engine life vs. the price of a quality filter is a no brainer.
I do the same. I always buy the best filter, a extra couple bucks is better than a couple thousand. Any synthetic on sale I'll use, I try to use top shelf.
Just a FYI Napa super tech is made by wix filter the real name is Mann Hummel wix was bought out by foreigners wonder how I know I worked there Gastonia Nc they also have plant in Mexico
@@rickbarnett9729 ok but if you watch videos wix napa are superior filters. not talking smack about supertech at all... I run their oil... but even if they are made by same company napa and wix filters are made better
@@hodgebone1 Well there made similar cut them open Yes they do run them on different lines and there not exactly same but they are made in same plant and some are made in Mexico yes Mexico makes all them also they get many many trailer loads weekly so to me I just use the Walmart filter even though I could get any one I want
Modern synthetic oils can handle many miles of service before needing to really be changed, but the filter can only hold so much dirt. One good high rpm jaunt on a dirty filter and the bypass opens? All that dirt gets circulated right into the engine.
Another good video WCW. I agree MP series adbv is silicone, but they should put it on the box. Seems Champ Labs going to ACDelco & ST9688 design in all these filters. No more combo bypass valves, a good thing. So for ~$2.50 more, the MP get silicone adbv with longer rated interval. Thanks for vid.
I use Supertech products and I change my oil & filter on all vehicles at 5k , so why pay more? I wouldn’t even think of going 10k yet 20k. I don’t trust any motor oil or filter that long. It’s cheap insurance to change both at 5k.
@@laylow8648 Just because the ST says good 'up to' doesn't mean one has to run it that far. It's more about advertising. 5-6k good for nitrile adbv, 10-15k for silicone adbv...if one chooses. Of course, under vehicle warranty, never exceed the OM recommendations. Honda recommends changing filter every other oil change. Something to think about.
First time I've ever seen anyone try and market a 20K mile filter and it didn't have synthetic media inside. Personally I wouldn't recommend more than 5K for either of these since they only have cellulose impregnated paper filtering media which will start to break down well before 10K miles....................
They still have the 10,000 mile Supertech filters at my Wal-Mart, and that's all I need. I do the oil change on my 06 CVPI every 7,500 miles since I mostly do highway speeds in a rural area, and barely if any, stop and go traffic (Severe driving). So this oil change interval is fine for Synthetic Blend 5W-20, which I use. I have no doubt I can even go 10,000 miles with the Supertech filters and Synthetic Blend 5W-20 between oil changes while highway driving if I need to since I maintain my vehicle, and change fluids, and filters. Which makes a big difference in terms of keeping the engine running well, and the oils cleaner. If you change you air filter, and other filters, like the fuel filter, and transmission filter, your engine oil and other oils in the vehicle stay cleaner longer. Which will keep your car happy.
Ams oil started it, along with synthetic oil, then mobile 1 one did it, I haven't heard one complaint about their 20k oil and filters. People were squawking about synthetic oil when it first came out. But these two 20k filters have been around a long time now.
Looks like a marketing issue granted the More expensive one has a silicone anti-drain back valve, but for most people it doesn’t even apply the filter might be hanging down underneath the car and you don’t have to worry about the oil draining back
Both of those filters will probably be clogged and in bypass at 10k, especially on a sooty GDI engine. The original version is a great value at $3 for 3-5k oil change intervals, the $6, not so much.
if you put on another filter loop with a very fine micron filter, you can run oil indefinitely! of course you have to monitor the filters, esp. the fine one. use the synthetic oil and remember that the best filters have a bypass valve open when plugged. just change the fine filter more often and run the oil forever. question is, does the fine filter take out the additives that make oil/ engine last longer? I know fellow that has dodge diesel that oil doesnt get black in it. must have good filter system, has hundreds of thousands of miles! Ed, retired oiler.
Additives do get used up eventually, and some fuel, moisture, etc. will still get into your engine. Only an oil analysis can give you an idea on when to change your oil when using a duel oil filter setup.
I have spoke to several reps from oil companies and we brought that up.. I personally believe that the additives diminish and or get used up. Having seen oil that had been run like that it had a diff look and smell after that many miles hours.
I have personally changed oil in a v8 truck that had over 20000 miles. Could find no issue's other than it needed a service . Did one that had 200miles on the oil and filter but had been sitting for a year and ahalf. The filter had to be beat off then unscrew the base plate ,, oil looked new and clear BUT filter media had turned to mush And damaged the engine. So cheap paper media is not good.
Unless the engine is coming apart, you'll never seen anything in the oil filter but brown stained filter media....most people change the filter to remove all of the old oil. You can pull them off, drain all of the old oil, wash them in solvent, and replace them....the only real limiting factor is the condition of the rubber gasket.

The paper media will rupture over time. There's moisture in the oil and moisture destroy paper. First, the pleads will create waves and weaken, then, holes.

Good video you kept your promise, what I’m thinking is the vehicles that require extended oil changes there making the supertech MP filters and the ones that are still on 5k interval they will keep the $2.97 ones for. They also got rid of the K N oil filters with the nut on top and replaced with the black KN non nut on top. What’s funny is I can get a Toyota oem filter for about the same price as this new supertech filters.
I've got a Toyota filter going on tomorrow, you probably aren't going to like it if you use Toyota oil filters but it is what it is, but I hope you like the video for its content.
The problem with Toyota oil filters are they are made in China. The Walmart filters are made in the USA. I try not to put any China parts on my car if I can help it.
Love your videos. There's a lot of debate regarding the oil filter in my car. Honda S2000. The part number is 15400-PCX-004. They say OEM for this car is a one off and is by far the best filter on the market. I believe your analysis would finally put a nail in that coffin. Thanks.
The extra 2 grams on the mp filter is probably all that excess glue!! Who would go 20,000 miles before an oil change anyway? As the great Scotty would say.. “oil is cheap..Engines are not”.
Great video. The silicone ADBV is a nice improvement. But for the additional cost of $2 and change maybe a bit much. I did see at my Walmart the ST6607 filter has changed from blue to white. Same 10k miles rating. Maybe they are having 2 tiers 10k. White filter 20k blue filter Like fram has 4 tiers Extra guard Tougher guard Ultra synthetic High mileage How does the super tech 20k filter match up to the STP 6607 filter . They should be identical
@@WhipCityWrencher as you say they are identical filters. White syn rubber was selling cheaper then black when the bought it . That is what's going on. It is the paper that does the filtering not the rubber and you are paying twice as much for the same product! Some where there is a disclaimer about light duty driving only and they don't cover all cars.
Just a "By the way". I saw a comparison between the Wix regular filter, and their extended life filter. The regular filter would trap smaller size particles than the extended life filter! The extended life filter lasts longer, or doesn't clog up as quick because it allows more particles to pass! I wonder if it is the same with other brands.
Super Tech also has newer filters now in a white canister. I know the ST6607 I bought was stamped Feb 2021. Would be great if you could check them out. 👍🏽
Ok I see one different black and blue back rubber valves. Can you built home make pipe in and out Thur pump to test it. I just want to see if any problems issue. Also pump and boil to see if rubber can stand heat. Might that blue rubber cannot stand heat. Can you test it ?
Super tech oil and filters are great. The reason I don’t buy it is I like to support the large oil manufactures, valvoline, Castro’s, Mobil, pennz etc. without these big manufactures there’d be no advancements in oil like we have now, 20,00 mile oil, high mileage oil. If it’s just warren and other mixers selling to repackagers we won’t have the advancements.
The K&N select filter is also the exact same filter, i and many others have had issues with metal shavings on the threads, from sloppy craftsmanship, so make sure to check the threads or any portion of the plate for that matter, for any metal shavings. But, i do like the filters. Look at the ST Maximum Protection 7317 and compare it to the K&N so-1010 and you'll see they are identical 😊 Thanks for the comparison.
I went to Walmart today and looked at the filters you mentioned, they couldn't be more opposite. The MP7317 had a plastic inner cage with 13 inlet holes and the K&N SO1010 has a metal inner core with louvers and 6 inlet holes. So I did not get them.
@@WhipCityWrencher k&n has been changing up their suppliers or something. Not sure if your store still has the older version or whsts going on, but the ones here are identical to the supertech mp 7317 except for the color. I will verify again the k&n part #. Others have noticed the same thing. Will have to do some further research. Thx for checking
@@WhipCityWrencher took some pics while at Walmart, but can't upload them to TH-cam comments, but they were identical. The k&n with 6 holes is the previous version, as long as we're talking about the k&n select. Either way they are both good filters and no reason not to use them.
Well everyone has a opinion. I have over 52 years of experience. I say use what makes you feel warm and fuzzy. But in fact change that oil regularly. Do not care what oil you use. Nor the filter you think is best. Indeed! 20000 to me is quite a stretch although. Good luck with that logic. 🤔✌️👌
Who manufactures these filters for Walmart another thing is they do not cover all cars applications with that 20,000-mile filter they didn't have one for my car
@@mrhamburger6936 With some searching you could probably find one that will fit on your engine, but you're right they dont list one for your car. You could go with the ACDelco same price range and made by Champ Labs. If you want a 20,000-mile filter then I would go with the Fam Ultra. I'll pin your question. Maybe someone will comment that uses the same oil filter and knows of a Supertech MP that fits your car.
Anybody changing a high quality full synthetic oil at 3K (or even 5k) such as Pennzoil Ultra, Mobil 1, Castrol, Valvoline, etc etc, is just literally throwing away good oil not to mention money. If you’re hell bent on a 3K or 5K oil change interval then just run a good quality conventional oil or maybe a decent Semi-Synthetic.

Just go to NAPA and buy a Wix Gold filter, the best filter on the market. Just go into the pits of any NASCAR race and check out what they run. I even saw a team that was partially sponsored by Fram and they were spray painting a Wix filter orange.
Can't be serious!10000,20000,on a oil filter,I am a old school thinking 3000 miles max, I use Napa Gold or Platinum and Mobile One full synthetic motor oil, nothing but the best for my two Acuras.
I remember when synthetic oil was being touted as being the best oil for your vehicle able to go twice as long between oil changes. Now I hear mechanics back petal saying 5k. What the hell? So much for wonder oil. Any oil is going to need changing based more on things like weather conditions, vehicle use, vehicle location. I personally feel the manufacturer should be rating oil changes on those factors. NO ONE should ever wait 10k or 20k to change their oil, ever. So boasting such milage on the box is marketing hype, nothing more.
I took 4 cars well over 100,000 miles on full synthetics, OCI every 15,000 with filters at 7,500. Even sent a sample to Blackstone Labs and they said I had another 3,000 miles on that batch. My engines stayed clean. In the early days mechanics wouldn't even admit synthetics were better oils. You haven't done much research on filters, some of them can do the 20,000 miles if the engine is clean and no gdi. But my current job and newer vehicles won't allow the high mileage OCI, so every 6 months, or 5,000 miles they get new full synthetics and filter.
It really depends on the oil, you can go longer with synthetic oil, also you would have to change your oil and skip a few oil filter changes to reach 20,000 miles on an oil filter. With city driving mixed in, my personal max. is around 5,000 miles. An oil analysis would let you know approximately how far you could stretch your oil. Oil and oil filters are cheap, engines are not. Thanks, for watching. 🙏🙌😊

@Bill Sbac I did a video on the white ones, it will be shown on Aug. 13th.
I would never run any oil filter for 20,000 miles. I don't care what the manufacturer recommends. 5,000 is my max.
I wouldn't either,
Thanks for watching and your feedback👍🙏😊

@@risenfromyoutubesashesagai6302 i mostly use the $9.97 Mobile 1 filter, but i bet the $2.97 Super tech is just fine after seeing it cut open.
But was the filter dirty enough to open the bypass valve? You'll never know.
You obviously have light duty driving. 10000 could be fine in your case. Not all cars and driving styles and environments are the same. There will be a disclaimer some where about light duty driving only. Like there is on these sealed transmissions.

@@Number6_ Everyone knows this. Everything depends.
Perfectly fine for most vehicles as long as it doesn't come apart.
I have been using Super Tec filters for years with no problems! 👍🇺🇸
Silicone has a higher heat tolerance than rubber, hence is heavily favored for an extended oil filter. It does cost more to process than rubber.
How can any manufactuer garantee a specific number of miles? An older engine is going to contaminate the oil faster than a new one just as driving conditions will affect the state of the oil. It is all silly marketing.
You are Definitely Correct 👍
It's all an advertising gimmick. They know no one is going to push a claim against them. No way you could actually PROVE that mileage in court. They'd just say you were lying about it and really there's nothing to do about it. You're just out a bunch of money in court and attorney cost's. WAAAAAAAY more than simply buying a new filter and oil change and likely more than a new engine if it failed SOLEY(and that again can't really be proved) because of an oil filter.
They're not guaranteeing the cleanliness of your oil, they're guaranteeing the mechanical operation of the filter.
I still laugh at people that think they need to change the oil every 3,000 miles.
Definitely marketing. 2X the money for 2,000 more miles. Heck, change the oil at 5K miles and use the less expensive filter.

If they were closer to 20-25 microns they would be better. 30 means bigger grit.
The more expensive filter is better and heavier because the filter material will be greater. Best filter I ever used? Bosch Distance Plus. I change the oil when semi black and most honey color gone. If you have the GM 3.6 change the oil at 4000 always.
👍
I've always used synthetic blends, OE filters, and change around 5,000 ish miles. Different strokes for different folks, but to me an oil change is cheap and easy insurance, and I'm not going over 7,000-8,000 with anything regardless of the "up to" advertised.
I agree. 5k miles plus or minus. Oil brand doesn’t matter too much. Filter doesn’t matter too much. If you shop around can get an oil change done for $20 and half hour of your time (and the wife leaves you alone for that half hour ) that’s a winner.
I agree 100%
Last time I checked there was only a 30¢ a quart difference between Super Tech conventional vs synthetic. Why buy conventional?
Try full synthetic instead of the blend of regular and synthetic if that's what you're using.
The extra 2g. on the MP was probably all the extra slop glue around the base of the filter media. Great review... Thank you.

SuperTech are made by Champion Filter at the Champion Filter plant in Clover SC.
My 1982 Honda three wheeler has a thimble shaped screen for a “filter” and is stil running strong, engine never been opened. 41 years old.
Whip city wrenched. Thank you so much for this video. I change every 5000 might as well save the two dollars and something.
Filter element mass: 32g for the MP vs 30g for the ST... I bet that is due to the glue present on the MP and not on the ST. Otherwise they do look nearly identical but it's hard to tell by looks. A proper test must be done to indicate any difference in performance and longevity.
Look at the video, the MP filter is larger diameter, too bad the reviewer does not notice this!

Thanks.
Hi JF,
I dug it out, and I'm looking at it right now the blue part is an all-plastic one-piece that has a flat top that covers the hole, with a spring underneath.

5k oil changes for me
I buy Super Tech Synthetic 10K mile and the 10k ST oil filter but I change at 5k
Conventional vs. synthetic also makes a big difference. I wouldn't go more than 5K on conventional oil or a cheap filter. Synthetic oil and a good filter and I think 7.5K (like a lot of owners manuals suggest) is fine.
@@rodsmolter5046 agreed
Some ester based oils can even be hygroscopic making them not ideal for long oci's.
when a walmart filter is built better than fram
@Dakota Duree definitely is. I run them in everything I have now.
Wal mart brands have to keep a decent quality due to the fact that there’s places who rely solely on their wal mart for shopping. That’s why Wal marts tools have actually been proven to be damn good quality for the price.
I'll use coffee filters stuffed with paper towel before I touch Fram

I use Supertech oil and filters, but will NOT go past what the car manufacturer has stated for its maintenance intervals.
Less if you do mostly short trip and stop-and-go driving,
Nothing wrong with a 5,000 mile OCI. I highly recommend it.
Thanks for sharing👍
@@WhipCityWrencher More than that, 5000 miles is a maximum with dino oil and a low-end filter. Jeepers, one of the tire chains where I live offers a $19.95 oil change just to get you in the door. Anyone can afford that.
thank for the demo comparison, I won't buy a Walmart oil filter ever again. I decide to go with the napa oil filter to pay litter more know quality is there.
After seeing a loose piece of glue on the paper media, I would never use those filters.
Napa gold or wix equivalent for me only. Worth it for the 8 or 10 bucks. Plus I get 2-5 quart jugs of synthetic at costco for 25 bucks.

My Walmart had a bunch of empty spots as well with these filters lol that's why I'm looking them up and came across this video
BTW thank you for this video!!!
It's probably because the all the local lube shops are buying them all up and charging high prices for people who don't know
Your Welcome James,
At the time I made the video, they had just started putting these on the Walmart shelves.
What would your recommendation be the most "best" filter to use for your vehicle from what you have experienced thank you
There really isn't a best, just like asking what is the best oil?
Thank You!
And thanks for your feedback.👍🙏😊
I think the point is you can go a few oil changed without changing the filter. Not sure that’s a good idea, just saying that’s the point.....I think

Regular oil changes with good oil and filter, and your engine will be happier.
You're Doing a Good Job!👍
Good filter for my 5000 mile oil changes. I want my cars to last past 100k. 5k maximum on my oil changes...
In my opinion, 5K is a good oil change interval.

For $3 I will run on my Toyota for 5K, but definitely not the 10k or the 20k the boxes advertise. Not sure if I would want to run any filter 20k. Oil and filter is cheap compared to the cost of an engine.
You got that right👍
I've ran the 10k to two 7k intervals simply because I didn't have the filter after the first change and said "eh fuck it" and I cut it open and the media wasn't collapsing in, tearing, or becoming brittle.

Thanks…Jim

Just a note to all of you with turbos on your cars. You better change that oil every 5000. Turbos do NOT like dirty oil. A couple bucks for new oil and a filter is a lot cheaper than replacing single or dual turbos. You have been warned.
Excellent advise👍
Thank You!
You can't 'engage' and 'disengage' a turbo.
Is it ok to run a oil filter for several years, if you only put 2K miles on the vehicle? I just wonder if the filter media will stay intact...
I wouldn't, the filter media may tear after a while. I would change at least once a year.
Thanks for watching👍
@@WhipCityWrencher Thanks...
The red mark and green mark on the filter media seem to indicate a different filtration micron. Long life filters often filter worse so they don't clog as fast.
Someone told me what the marks meant, but I cant think of it right now, but I do know it doesn't mean micron rating.
20 years ago I used to be able to buy a case of 12-1 quart 20w-50 SuperTech for $11.07.
When I was in high school I used to be able to do a oil change on my 1985 bmw 528e for $13.00 with super tech. I knew it wasn’t the greatest but I would just change it like every 2k for the price. I loved that car
Seems like super tech has stepped up their game on filters.
A little bit.😊
By adding a slightly better anti drain back valve? 🤨 Lol. 😆
It’s the same damn filter. You’d think they would at least add a few inches of filter media or something. 2 grams of glue? That’s IT???? 🤨🤔

Yep, it's too bad they didn't improve the micron rating.
So.... You believed the marketing wank.
I wonder if it's still a cellulose based filtering media. I know with all other premium filters made for longer oil changes with synthetic oil use the filtering media is some sort of synthetic material that can filter out smaller particles than what this Supertech filter can do.

@@laylow8648 I also like the 5K oil change intervals 👍
Mobil 1 filters are 20k and only synthetic blend media
Super tech filters look almost the same as AC Delco, probably same supplier
It is.

Your right, for the price, change them at 5k and sleep well at night.👍😊
that the price difference of a Craft Beer at the bar, no biggie.
if you put on another filter loop with a very fine micron filter, you can run oil indefinitely! of course you have to monitor the filters, esp. the fine one. use the synthetic oil and remember that the best filters have a bypass valve open when plugged. just change the fine filter more often and run the oil forever. question is, does the fine filter take out the additives that make oil/ engine last longer?
The filter had to be beat off then unscrew the base plate ,, oil looked new and clear BUT filter media had turned to mush
And damaged the engine. So cheap paper media is not good.
Why am I guessing it was a scam filter ! Sorry fram 🤣
I would buy just the $3 one chance oil every 5k be good.
Thats why most say change your oil 3000 or 5000 miles or 6 months whichever comes first the paper filter starts breaking down after 6 months
3000 mile change is mainly for Turbo and High performance engines that are driven hard

Do not wash & reuse an old oil filter ! they are not designed for it .

Thanks.

@@WhipCityWrencher as you say they are identical filters. White syn rubber was selling cheaper then black when the bought it . That is what's going on.
Usually, the higher-end oil filters have a better micron rating. Some of the reg. Wix filters don't have that great of a micron rating anyway.

Super tech oil and filters are great. The reason I don’t buy it is I like to support the large oil manufactures, valvoline, Castro’s, Mobil, pennz etc. without these big manufactures there’d be no advancements in oil like we have now, 20,00 mile oil, high mileage oil.
Wix filters are premium!
30 microns? I guess it last a long time because it doesn’t filter anything..
30 microns = just under 0.0012 inch.
I never change my oil! Top of the line oil filter every 5000k’s and synthetic oil.... Sienna with 450, 000 k’s now
BS, Even synthetics have limitations.
Realistically how long can you use the 20,000 mile filter with a lot of city driving and some highway driving?
It really depends on the oil, you can go longer with synthetic oil, also you would have to change your oil and skip a few oil filter changes to reach 20,000 miles on an oil filter.
With city driving mixed in, my personal max. is around 5,000 miles.
An oil analysis would let you know approximately how far you could stretch your oil.
Oil and oil filters are cheap, engines are not. Thanks, for watching. 🙏🙌😊
Thanks for great video

I will stick with my NAPA gold Wix filters
