The easiest way to avoid a BSOD-on-boot situation with Throttlestop other than not using 'save voltages immediately' option is to tune the undervolt on a different profile (e.g. #2) than the one set to load on boot (e.g. #1).

If you increase the ThrotleStop turbo power limits and the CPU continues to throttle, you should try using the FIVR - Disable and Lock Turbo Power Limits option. Intel CPUs have a duplicate set of power limits. Checking this option takes care of the secondary power limits on most computers. After that, you should be able to use the ThrottleStop TPL window to control the primary turbo power limits without the secondary power limits getting in your way.
Thanks for sharing. Great to see ThrottleStop working correctly on Intel's latest CPUs.

Even with the undervolt shown here same settings, my cpu was hitting 98 and even 100 deg C in Aida 64 extreme stress tests. Today i changed my factory thermal pastes both cpu and gpu to Cooling Master Maker Nano Gel. Now cpu temps never go above 88 degree c. I can’t believe how important a thermal paste is. I have zero throttling in Aida 64 stress test, ran it for half an hour. This is amazing. The thermal paste and undervolt did the trick.

my ACER Helios Predator 300 the 2019 75DE model (i7-9750H with RTX 2060) is already undervolted -125, going to try 170 even though your laptop did 250. As you've mentioned each laptop mfr. configuration is going to be different. I think the manufacturers should include a copy of the Under Voltage Performance Tuning Guide with all laptops. It is strange with all the years of OVERCLOCKING we're going to Under Volt to make your CPU function better and cooler. OCing was about increasing multiplier, base clock and BIOS voltage settings while freezing your CPU with Liquid Nitrogen. Since both have a different goal in mind also with some common goals … we just want a decent high frequency, maintain stability and not hinder CPU life longevity. We ought to forget about Benchmarks and focus on passing Stress Tests to ensure our PC's function as it should. The Numbers Game of who has the Highest or Best Score is a Kids Game. Spend $6,000 to have the best of everything and next week someone spent $6,500 to notch one more point to you making you 2nd best …. anyone in for a game of Leap Frog ?

Hi Bob! Tnx for the amazing tutorial. I have a Lenovo Legion Y7000 (i7-9750h, 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD, RTX 2060, gaming only on external 1080p monitor, bought it a few weeks ago ). I have a cooling pad and enough space arround it to 'breathe'. I also wanna change thermal paste after corona crisis (dont wanna do it myself and risking losing the warranty). Before this my temps were going crazy while gaming (90+ all the time). After watching this I did next:
    1. Locked all frequencies at max of 3.7 GHz (I was most happy with temps at this frequency)
    2. Undervolted cache to -120 and core to -350 mV
    3. Locked turbo power limits both to 60 (TPL part in Throttlestop)
    4. In Afterburner i've locked GPU at ~ 1300MHz (tip from your video also, 2nd part when we choose frequency and then lock it manually with Ctrl + L)
My score with settings above was 2862 in Cinebench R20, max temps were 81. I don't have any kind of throttling. While gaming, temps are usually arround 75 CPU and 60 GPU. Best score I've manage to hit on Cinebench was 3019 with lock on 4Ghz on all cores, but temps were arround 90 so I didn't like that.
One question tough - while gaming (Escape from Tarkov) I can see CPU ussage is ~20% only while locked all the time at 3.7 GHz. GPU usage is ~ 60%. FPS (custom settings) is between 75-125 (depends from map). Is this CPU usage kinda normal or I did something wrong? I did enabled only physical cores in the game settings, but with that off CPU usage is also hanging at that percentage.
Tnx again for all tips and tricks, stay safe!

First off, thank you SO much for this walkthrough. Very easy to follow and informative (never dealt with a "power" laptop before or ever worried about laptop undervolting before so this was just what the doctor ordered. But I am finding my particular case pretty odd. I have a G7 7790 with an i7 9750H. It was running hot til I undervolted with throttlestop and some pretty low/safe "Turbo" settings but I wasn't going to mess with it any more until I repasted the CPU/GPU. 2 Thermal Grizzly Minus Pad 8's and some Kryonaut later and I'm now going at it but I am getting some readings here that are completely atypical compared to what you show in your video that I wanted to inquire about. So, with AIDA64 running (Stability/stress test), I currently have Throttlestop set to 45/45/44/44/43/43 Turbo Ratio limits, undervolted .127mV on CPU core and CPU cache, TPL set to 52/80/28 and Speed Shift set to 1-45. With these settings and AIDA64 running, I'm getting 3.990Ghz (not ~4.3Ghz that I would expect considering the Turbo Ratio) but the crazy thing is that CPUID HM says my Package power draw is only ~16W, max 38W and temps don't go over 75C average.....WTF? Your laptop was pulling 50+W with about the same settings. When My CPU gets to 70-75C the fans kick in and it quickly drops back down to 55-60C but the CPU speed and power draw stay roughly the same. Any ideas whats going on as this seems very odd that I am drawing so little power per your example and yet getting almost the speed I would expect at decent temps.
Please advise, and thanks again, and sorry for the book!

I re-pasted an Asus GU502GV (newer Zephyrus M series), which has an i7-9750H and RTX 2060. Thermals haven't really improved, but I believe that's due to thermal pads I used that were not similar to the kind that came stock (gel-like pads that were probably applied as a paste). I'm thinking I'm going to have to undervolt to prevent CPU thermal throttling. Not sure how to address power limiting though. Also, Asus has their Armoury Crate software with some cpu/gpu profiles, "Windows", "silent", "performance", "turbo", and "manual". I'm afraid messing with throttle stop will cause issues, as these "profiles" are tied to some version of Intel's XTU. I believe the "windows" profile is a passthrough mode, from what I've read online. I would most likely have to leave it on the windows profile and THEN try and mess with TS. I'll attempt another thermal paste with some Noctua NT-H2 and some K5 pro liquid thermal pads (which mimics what came stock)....

    Stock - AC
Sereral seconds of hitting Turbo wattage limit 90W - effective 40x multiplier
Continues wattage hitting limit 70W - effective 34x-35x multiplier
    Stock - Battery
Continues wattage hitting limit 42W - effective 26x multiplier
    Undervolted - AC - cache -135mv / cpu -400mv*
Turbo & continues using only 66W - continues effective 40x multiplier!
    Battery Wattage 21W - effective 23x multiplier
    * This value is "somewhat applied". It gives slightly better in wattage (1.5Watt) when set to -400mv or -1000mv than having it matched with the cache of -135mv.
No mather how low, the CPU won't crash, some other factor is preventing it for going to low.
I also started out lowering only the CPU voltage, and that got me half way, so it's doing someting when it's not linked to the cache voltage, but it's mechanic is very unclear to me.
I had a few issues getting Throttlestop starting at startup correctly. At one point, the undervolt didn't apply completly and was not visible on the taskbar, but still running in the background.
But after following every instruction to the letter, it worked.
Saving is huge on the undervolt The temporary Wattage limit of 90W is never used, and now contentiously hitting it's max. 6 core turbo of 40x wile only using 66W.
Before it was only capable of 40x during a few seconds of 90W, while getting close to 95*c and thermal throttling while fans where speeding up.
Not it's quiter, only hitting 80*c max.
On battery with the same undervolt profile it's a bit slower, 23x instead of 26x, but only using 21W instead of 42W, so a 50% save on power usage compared to stock for only a slight performance decrease.
I basically get 90W stock 40x boost performance for 66W undervolted continuously 40x.
going lower with the cache that -135mv made the cpu give errors on TSbench and sometimes crashes on normal use. For now -135mv seems stable, and I think overall a good piece of silicon.
Cine-bench R20 score - stock 2550, undervolted 3016 This is including the temporary boost, in longer benchmarks the difference would be even bigger.

Well, i have a dell G7 with this processor. So ofcourse i have an overheating issue (all drivers and BIOS up to date). Followed this tutorial and others, but problem persists. For example, as point of reference i will take CS-GO (because that stress test is using the proc differently and we need real life scenarios). On CS-GO, CPU Utilisation ( Intel XTU) would be aroung 30% and temperature will rise imediately to 100 degrees. So, i did all this in this tutorial, only difference is that its not anymore flat on 100 degrees, and sometimes for few seconds goes down to 97-95. Only real thing that showed a drastic improvement is changing the Icc Max (down ofcourse ) but then i get the Curent Limit throtling warning ( Intel XTU ). So...this tuning its not quite working properly for me (i do not understand how it works for other people).
Meanwhile, i called Dell Tech Support to ask about this issue, and they said clearly that they know about the issue and they offered to take the laptop into service, which i refused because they would take it to Poland and i live in Switzerland (a lot of time). BUT....i also read regarding the thermal paste issue and people sayng that they changed it and no problem after that without any undervolting. They guy from Dell Support told me that i will not lose the waranty if the laptop is opened and the thermal paste changed !!! Meanwhile, as a clear workaround for this piece of shit engineering, at least for CS-GO and Dota2, was to disable boost from Throtlestop (or BIOS, your choice) and now everything runs smooth (ofcourse 2.6 Ghz - natural frequency of the CPU) without overheating. I really do not know if i should accept running like this or to change the thermal paste for using the boost EMBEDED FUNCTIONALITY :). Any opinions?

So, this is a specific case of the turbo fan button working to raise the turbo boost long power max, but am I wrong in assuming this will not work in most other laptops? I thought you were going to check "disable and lock turbo power limits" to get that wattage up.
I would like to see a true apples to apples comparison of the 8th gen/9th gen, with comparable wattage pull on both and tested in similar (if not identical) thermal environments.
    Exceptional video as always!

Question! I just got my self a Lenovo Legion Y540 with an i7 9750H now i understand from this is that this help clock speeds under stress load but does it apply to gaming load as well?
from what i know is that different type of loads cause the cpu to act differently. so maybe it will run slower when undervolting during gaming? i don't have much knowledge with laptops i mostly work with desktops so im new here. i'm already seeing around 3.8Ghz when gaming without any modifications. i have not tried stress testing.
From what i expect that lowering the voltage would cause the cpu run slower but here we see an improvement which to me makes no sense, but alright.
    Thanks!

    • @BobOfAllTrades
      @BobOfAllTrades  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

The reason for the improvements on mobile CPUs is because they’re power limited unlike desktops.
If these mobile chips were uncorked they’d pull 90w. Of course they’d overheat too.
However due to this in general we have a certain wattage that we’re working with. So by lowering the voltage, the overall power consumption of the chip is maintained which means were going to get a frequency boost in many scenarios.
This wouldn’t work this way if these CPUs only needed 45w to perform at their absolute maximum.

Hey I am trying to run a 9900ks in an x7c sky from eurocom and it's been a bit of a challenge (which I knew full well when I bought it). When I bought it, the default configuration was a 50mv undervolt, but was thermal, PL1, and current limit throttling. I underclocked the boost to 4.8 Ghz and used a -140 Mv undervolt with current limits increased and a new PL1 of 150W and it was stable for about 4 months (using the massive power supply), which removed all throttling. Unfortunately after a blue screen the PL1 was no longer wanting to stick at 150W and is now stuck at 95W, so I had to reoptimise a new undervolt which ended up only being 4.7 Ghz stable.
Any ideas what might cause the hardcap of PL1 to shift so massively?

Thanks for the vid, will be trying this on my new MSI and upgrading the CPU compound. Any idea how one could disable 3 of the 6 cores to get best battery life for a scenario where you are on a plane and want to get the longest batt life possible?

Isn't the long power max meant to be higher than the short power max? I see people with 100 for PL 1 and less for PL2, it's confusing I wish I could find a better guide there only seems to be basic ones online.

Bob How are you? I enjoy your videos and had a question. I'm getting 4k MHz across the cores, Core temps 65-75 celsius while gaming. Any reason I need to undervolt or do any of the suggestions you have in your video? Thanks for your time.

    Hello Bob,
I recently got a Razer Blade 15 base with a 9750h and a RTX 2060 GPU. I follow your previous method on the 8750H and use it on my laptop. Did seem to drop the temps at max CPU from 85c down to 75-80c and still retain the clock at 4gigahertz. I'm not 100% on all the technicalities of UV or OC anything. Would you say that my temperature is normal?

nice, what im trying to do is get my temps when playing below 80 degrees, i see the main culprit in rising temps in the laptop is intel turbo boost, disabling it fixed it, but obviously, i dont want to disable it neceserally, so i made the turbo boost power limits low enough, that its always underclocking itself, to not reach that temp (since i cant underclock it directly because thats locked). Does this sound reasonable?

Hi there! I would like to ask you if it's allright to follow the undervolt CPU and the GPU guide on my laptop, it performs well, max temps 80-85 degrees but I want to lower them for long-term performance.. I have the next laptop -> ASUS ROG Strix G G531GV Intel® Core™ i7-9750H - GeForce RTX 2060. I can't wait for your answer ! Thank you and great tutorials..

Tomitza YT Yes but do NOT copy this. Asus gaming laptops are very Cache undervolt sensitive. -.050 might be its safe maximum.

So if I do the undervolt of 8750h guide and the gpu one should I undervolt max 0.50 max? I saw on other vids to 0.100 on different laptops, asus ones does not support that much. If i leave it as it is should be ok.. thanks and I really don t know what to do

I'm having a problem with hp omen with same cpu, in benchmarking it reaches 3.8 ghz (manually limited frequency by me) but in games it only gets 2.9-3 ghz, and wattage limits itself at 20 watts, sometime 25. The only solution I have found is enabling high perfomance mode in battery settings but it makes my cpu run at 3,8 ghz constantly no matter if its idle or game, definetely not temps (75 max after 2 hours of cyberpunk 2077), any solution?

NEED HELP! I don't know ANYTHING about undervolting... i need my laptop to run cooler big time as its currently hitting 80-90c when gaming and i'm scared for the components. I just bought the ACER Predator Triton 500 with intel i7 9750h RTX 2060 16gb ram & 1TB ssd.
Heard some scary things about undervolting and don't want to turn my new $2,220 laptop into a paperweight! if anything should go wrong will i be able to restore my laptop to factory settings?

Your temps are good "out of the box" temps. Not sure what you have heard about undervolting but it is pretty much safe. Search "address that hot i7 8750h", its good and well explained guide 🙂
      Edit: *throttlestop guide

We cook undervolting into android ROMs and it never once hurt a phone processor, I think it's fine.

Hello, I have a problem. My i7 9750h temperature is really messed up! When I play a game, lets say cod, the cpu goes to 90 degree in less than 3 seconds, which is totally unhealthy. When I change the power settings from 100% to 99%, the temperature while gaming goes from 90 to 68 degree, but the clock speed becomes limited to only 2495 (no noticable changes in the game fps) . Is there a fix for this? The cpu can goes to 4500, but having it limited to only 2495 kinda sucks. Mine is an msi gl65 9se, I7 9750H, 24g ram and an rtx 2060.
