Edit: 9/11/18 ThrottleStop 8.70 integrates into Windows 10 even better now by placing itself into the hidden icons tab. Clever and clean, great job team!
But let's not forget these new features and fixes too!
-improved WinRing0 security and memory access by Sam Haskins.
-ability to disable and lock the memory mapped turbo power limits.
    -added IccMax adjustment.
-fixed FIVR voltage names for Skylake and newer CPUs.
-regular system tray CPU temperature updates in Stop Data mode.
-single click system tray icons and new Logo Min option.
    -smaller Turbo Power Limits window.

hey Bob Of All Trades, i have hp omen dc 0051nr. I followed your instructions, my clock frequency stays fixed at around 3900(+-20) mhz while charging, and i can see that it does for you too.
But i don't understand Is it a good thing or is it bad as in the video you discuss that it shouldn't be at that all the time even without load? My temperatures(while charging only) even after undervolting stay 50-60 in idle state and reach upto 99 while heavy gaming.

@@facuigua12 You cannot expect the same results between two different laptops. Heck! You ideally shouldn't expect the same results even on the same laptop. This is because, every laptop is different in the sense that one might have clogged up fans or poorly applied thermal paster or even dried up thermal paste.
So you can say that he had that huge difference probably because voltage was the only culprit in his case. In your case, it could be a combination of voltage, fans, or thermal paste.
Main factor to remember is that his is a different laptop. His laptop might simply have a better cooling solution (heat pipes and air flow) than yours.

@@madguy123lolol2 I agree with you 100%. But still a 25° difference felt way too good to be true just by changing the voltage a bit, specially with just -125 mV. Thats why I was asking them if they actually palyed for a bit to see the real changes (happened to me the first time i undervolted). Nevertheless, I did manage to take mine 15° lower eventually by limiting my gpu's frequency and cpu's turbo + undervolt, so those 25° don't seem too impossible, specially considering what you've said about every laptop being different and in different conditions.

Which did help with the FPS to keep it at a continuous 60 FPS.
Running Battlefield 1 with the stock 8 GB of ram would take up 7.4 GB of usage. After installing 16 GB or ram the game will consume 8.6 GB of ram but no worries of bottle-necking of ram.

After my initial m17 r1 Thermal Grizzly repaste (and raising back of laptop by 1.5 ") after playing games (Apex, DMC 5) for 2 hours or so, I was getting max temps in the low 90's and throttling on some cores (usually 1,3,5), but my average temps were in the 70's, which was a drastic improvement from pre-repaste when the max temps were all 99 with throttling on all cores and average temps in the upper 80's/lower 90's.
I decided to undervolt using ThrottleStop. Since I have a i7-8750H processor, I used Bob of All Trades' video and undervolted CPU Cache and Core by -125mV. My temps decreased by 10-15 degrees!! Now with the repaste, raise and undervolt...I am getting max temps in the mid-70's with no throttling and averages in the mid-60's.
Makes me wonder how good the temps would have been within the repaste, and undervolting ONLY. Hm.....

For anyone that has the Asus Zephyrus M GM501GS, DO NOT adjust the Speed Shift to 0, leave it at 128. It causes the CPU to turbo constantly on this laptop, after returning it to normal my laptop runs 10C cooler as the CPU isn't boosting all the time now.

Hi Bob, I certainly didn't expect a reply! Thanks for the excellent video, I know it was only a rough guide to the 8750H, my undervolt settings are quite different but done the same way as the video showed. In my GM501, I have my core undervolted to -125mV, but my cache only to -48.8mV, any lower than -50mV I get the BSODs. Otherwise I've applied everything from your video, but I've only just found tonight that if I put the Speed Shift back to 128, My CPU changes it's speed all the time rather than being stuck on 3.9ghz. It has made a massive difference to the thermals in my unit. I'm no expert so not sure why setting it to zero causes it to be stuck mostly at full boost.

I have the asus GL703strix, the cpu also turbos constantly when speed shift is set to 0!.
I have a question when I leave the speed shift at 128, when I stress test the clock is only 3.3 Ghz and the TDP is around 27 W, and when idle clock is 3.7Ghs and TDP 12W I want my cpu to stay cool when doing normal stuff like browsing the internet and then get respectable clocks when gaming or doing simulations do you have any idea how to achieve this?
I thought this was like normal for a cpu but out of the box it was always at 3.88 Ghz all the time ...

Hey Justin, because of Bob's great review I now own a brand new Zephyrus M as of this week as well.
regarding your CPU being stuck at full boost is because what Bob explained about the battery settings.
The user interface is just a bit different in our case I think.
Go to control panel-> Power options -> set power plan to balanced instead of high performance.
Now you can leave speed shift on 0 and your cores will boost when needed.
      Hope this helps.

The battery profile tip was really really good, I was wondering why my processor was unnecessarily running rounds like an idiot, and the fan always turned on and stayed min at 50%. You never know what new you learn. I used xtu and noticed the cpu and cache don't have separate voltages, but I stuck to it since I was anyway keeping em together, achieved a full 15-20C drop. WARNING: Speed Shift - EPP shouldn't be set to 0. That will keeps the computer running at max frequency all the time. Just keep it 128, that is a pretty balanced value. Or you can set it to 64 if power cord is connected, and 128 or higher if it is running on battery. Speed Shift - EPP setting is basically telling the CPU how much you prefer it shifts quickly to higher frequency (0-128) or lower frequency(128-256).

trying to fix temps on msi gs65 stealth (9se I believe) I already knew about throttlestop and undervolting but this gave me some insight I didn't have before. Unfortunately temps are still pretty damn crazy on this thing which is bothersome, it easily passes 80-90 degrees during load. Because of this I set fans to advanced options and put a pretty aggressive fan curve, even using the fans over 100% (which I guess could help the cpu in the long run but shorten the life of the fans) I'm curious what other solutions people have and what people think about my situation. I am considering repasting both the cpu and gpu and that would likely greatly improve my temps, though I am a bit nervous. I've already opened this thing up voiding my warranty just so I could install a 1tb ssd (because really msi? this expensive of a machine with this much juice and only a 256gb boot drive with no other storage??) but I've never actually reapplied thermal paste on a laptop before. Any tips, tricks, or good words to minimize my concerns or help my situation? Maybe recommend places to go or people to talk to that can repaste with me or for me for the first time?

I know this is 2 months old. I have an Omen 15 with a 8750H but only a 1050. I got my vCore and Cache offset to -150.4mV. I also put the Intel GPU on -50.8mV. And most importantly, I lowered my clocks to 3.2GHz (6 cores) all the way to 3.7GHz (1 core). I also undervolted the 1050 with MSI afterburner. Another thing that also affected temps a lot was caping the FPS in games. I use RTSS (it already comes with Afterburner) instead of VSync to avoid major input delay.
I also set the EPP to 64. It keeps clocks down when browsing and whatnot, and when gaming it always stays at the maximum clock (my own clock, not 3.9GHz).
For instance, I play BF1. At 1080p (low because of the 1050) capped at 60FPS, the 8750H will be around 40/50% and around 60ºC. The 1050 goes from 50% to 100% and reaches 57º58º but the 8750H will still be at a resonable 65ºC.

I’ve noticed that when the CPU is stressed the temps go up to 90 but as soon as it’s off then it drops down to like 50 within the next second is that even physically possible tho?? I’d think it be more of a gradual decline in temperature bc I don’t know if that much heat can just disappear within a second...

Can you please tell me the difference between undervolting and overclocking? And how can I overclock?
Also, I have an i7-9750h processor, can I undervolt the same way you have done here??

    • @peterjrcoolidge
      @peterjrcoolidge 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Yohqn this is a guess mate but overclocking means giving it more performance like maxing every thing out. But I would not mess with overclocking because you can really fuck something up if reckless. Underclocking is giving it less voltage so your computer can run cooler which also limits the possibility of thermal throttling. Not a pc expert and I’m probably gonna get a lot of hate for saying this but oh well. Hope that helps man

    • @infernored3689
      @infernored3689 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Overclocking gives the cpu more performance at the cost of more heat and fan noise, to keep it cool. I would not recommend to overclock if you have a laptop or a stock cpu cooler in your pc. The i7-9750h is just slightly better than the i7-8750h so you can undervolt the same way he undervolted.

Bob, this worked great for me! I set the voltage just like in the video -0.125 for both cache and core. Im using the i7 9750H on my Aorus XA but it still applied. Also I adjusted the battery as you said with the software "AI" and then my cores didn't go above 80 C in game. If there was a slight FPS drop I didn't notice because I had no thermal throttling. Thank you.
