BARENBOIM ON BEETHOVEN - Masterclass on the Sonatas
Renowned pianist and conductor Daniel Barenboim's masterclasses on Beethoven's piano sonatas were recorded at Symphony Hall, Chicago. January 2005
The featured works are: the Appassionata Sonata, Op. 57; the first movement of Sonata Op. 31 No. 1 and the third movement of Sonata Op. 109.
Barenboim takes each player through their chosen sonata movement, illustrating the importance of structure and the relationships between tempo, harmony and dynamics.
Pianist and conductor Daniel Barenboim gives a masterclass on the Beethoven piano sonatas, coaching some of the world's rising piano stars who already have international careers (like Lang Lang, here at his best, David Kadouch and Jonathan Biss).
Daniel Barenboim in his double role of director and pianist have achieved a very significant place in the most different musical stages. His talent is like a big watershed of ideas and original proposals about the importance of the sound, modulation, phrasing, fingering and articulation about some fundamental passages of the most distinguished Beethoven's Piano Sonatas.
There are notable, wisdom and substantial observations in this sense through a very warm exchange of points of view with these young pianists, as well with the present audience.
An invaluable document that must be seen not only by the newcomers musicians, but for all those who love the music.

"Você não manipula é manipulado pela música". Não se pode imaginar o que passava na cabeça de um Beethoven ao compor essas obras maravilhosas ou se essas obras maravilhosas, afinal, compuseram Beethoven. É impossível conscientemente compreender a inspiração.

It was very gracious of Lang Lang to agree to be the target of Barenboim's discourse on the wonders of the Appassionata. The two had recently recorded Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto and I'm sure Barenboim was sufficiently impressed with LL's musical gifts to invite him to participate in his master's class. No doubt LL himself was giving master's classes as a teacher at the same time he was relegating himself to student here. Class acts, both of them.

I love how Mr Barenboim, after answering the question about seeing images in music, turns to the boy who asked the question and asked HIM if he sees images. Such respect! Still being curious about music, expression, and other people's experience, is what makes him great. The music is bigger than his ego, which is beautiful to see.

A funny anecdote told by a friend of mine:
On the day of recording, Barenboim had a little drink prior to shooting. During the masterclass with Lang Lang, Lang Lang while playing the piece, sensed a long period of silence from the maestro, only to have found out that the latter fell asleep to him playing😉
I absolutely treasure these masterclasses by maestro Barenboim. In these, he talks about music with such a profound vivid poetry..and thorugh it I learn about not just what to me is probably the best body of piano works ever written, but life.
If you watch the individual masterclasses of this series, you'd see an Easter egg of Barenboim and the students in a restaurant. I always wonder what joke was told that got all of them laughing at the end..

“The piano is a very primitive, neutral instrument (…) and it is precisely this neutrality which gives it the posibility of so much expression, because you can put on the neutral wall any colours you want. You cannot put any colours you want on a wall that already has a colour: blue, red, whatever it is. And the neutrality of the piano is what gives it the possibility to be so expressive, but in order to do that, you have to accept the fact that in itself, left to its own devices it is a very neutral, inexpressive instrument, but that it is open to twenty million different ways of seduction of each finger”. I loved Barenboim as much as I loved the face of the man who made the question this excerpt was answering to.

    • @stuckupcurlyguy
      @stuckupcurlyguy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I love this quote, he is 100% right. The piano is completely hamstrung in terms of timbre and can never have any single note swell or die in the way a wind instrument can. It can't create harsh and smooth tones like a saxophone or the percussive sounds of a guitar. It's just hammers on strings. But it's the simplicity which demands so much virtuosity on the part of players.

I'm not a Lang Lang fan but to the people criticizing Lang Lang, you gotta remember this was shot back in 2005. Lang Lang was only 23 years old at the time of this class. In my opinion most 23 year olds are not old enough to perform Beethoven at this level. They haven't gone through enough life to be able to understand the emotional content of Beethoven's great sonatas. I believe even Barenboim was criticized with the same criticism when he was Lang Lang's age. Barenboim also has the advantage of recording the sonata cylces at least 2 times (that I know of ) in his lifetime, not to mention the countless recitals he has done as well so he has studied the music much more than Lang Lang. The fact that Lang Lang was so quickly able to adjust shows me that he isn't some dense pianist like people are making him out to be.

Barenboim in a very articulated way (with his own brilliant demonstrations on the instrument) taches us all the depths of instrumental mastery of Sonata form, Beethoven's stylistic language, but moreover- the intricacies of the instrument, the magic of both-the sound production as well as its perception. The formal analyses are invaluable with his attentiontodetailandat at the same time- keeping a wholistic picture of what can be achieved with musicalintelligenceand brilliance of playing techniques. It's a master-class on the "Temple of Music", the profound form of human expression through the sounds; on piano sonority and available to the performers' ways of awakening that beast that piano can be. Brilliant!

(On the next episode of "Barenboim on Bethoveen - Masterclass on the Sonatas")
Barenboim: "Your transitions are amazing, but make sure you don't loose the conflicting energy between the melodic tension and it's release at this part. Here, fortissimo is essential!"
Bethoveen: "Bah! I wrote this, you know? But, yes...you're...you're right. Thank you."

In most masterclasses I've seen the student acted like his teacher was critisizing their way of playing, so the teacher ended up kind of "making fun of him". However Lang Lang really shows he wants to learn and is really interested in what Barenboim is saying, so that makes him be respectful towards the student.
I just though that was really interesting.

Taking a lesson in front of an audience has a way of really focusing the attention. I take master classes in front of a live audience of 20+ pianists as well as an internet audience. I highly recommend them. Barenboim is brilliant, attentive, kind and incredibly insightful. He wouldn't bother with a pianist at my level probably, but I'd love to have a class with him.

I am sorry. This is such high level music making that 99% of the people on Youtub have no concept of what is going on. Barenboim likes Lang a lot. He praises him most of the time. These details of music are too advanced for most people. But go ahead and make comments about faces and moving around, I am sure your teacher told you to be absolutely still when you play. Barenboim really knows every note and mark of these sonatas, so amazing. His comments are really on such a high level that only a few of us understand. The effort it takes to control the sound of course you make faces. Lang is far superior of the three

    • @leonigudesman8069

Leon, you can definitely make the argument that the body motions are distracting from the interpretation, but that fact of the matter is that both langs and biss's interpretations are some of the most precise accurate of the modern day. Almost every articulation, every dynamic, empty spaces is perfect. Barenboim is just so ridiculous that he catches the few tiny errors that the two make.

You best calm down your ignorance and stop making comments about shit you have no clue about! Plus Barenboim cares about the music not his own ego! Gtfo!

Absolutely love both of them! You can definitely tell how much Daniel loves Lang Lang in the way he looks at him; and you can also absolutely tell how much Lang Lang loves him back the way he looks at him with admiration. Also it is interesting to see how lost the majority of the audience were...This masterclass is absolutely the top level anyone could imagine. The magic world of “witchcraft and wizardry” is not something the Muggles could comprehend. “You must have the will”. It is the will to be a great artist that has pushed Lang Lang to where he is today.

An hour spent with Barenboim and Lang Lang's Appasionata went from a confused, unfocused technique showcase to something structured and dramatic. Just imagine if he spent a month under the master!
Barenboim might struggle with the English a bit, but his depth of musical insight is so great that it transcends such difficulties. What a musician!

@@simonk6177 And it sounds like you are somehow saying that the two are equal and just different interpretations, and that all interpretations are equally valid. It is fairly clear that Berenboim puts a lot of thought into every nuance of a performance. Futhermore, Lang Lang is here, at a master class, so he obviously respects Berenboim's input. He obviously thinks he has something to offer. I too thought that his points about dynamics, as well as about tempo coming into a rest, were very good.
The truth is somewhere in the middle. Lang Lang is a great pianist, but everyone has some room to learn. It is clear that his initial performance of the piece was not as focused as it could have been. Doesn't mean it wasn't great. But also, look at the age difference.
