    My neighbor passed (88yrs old) and she gave me her 2008 Silver F250 SuperCab 2 wheel drive 6.4 to me with 73k miles. If you didn't know any better you would have thought it was a time capsule because it looks and runs like brand new. Has that tan/beige colored interior. Not a lick of rust on it anywhere. It got parked from October to May every year. She only used it to pull her horse trailer in the summer. I'll have to park it next to my other superdutys and hopefully get a couple hundred miles on it a year.

    So as a Ford tech, we hate the 6.4 extremely. I cant tell you how many customers come in with a 6.4 they got a “good deal” on and come to find the injector the guy they bought it from said it needed is actually a burnt piston.
    Key issues with 6.4s I see:
    - HPFP seal leaking, contaminating the oil with fuel and if you arent paying attention itll ruin the motor. This alone has killed hundreds of these engines.
    - Water pump poking a hole in the front cover and contaminating the oil with water and tearing the motor up. Have done so many front covers on these its not funny.
    - Turbocharger failure, either seals failing pumping engine oil out of the tailpipe. Have also seen many miscellaneous issues with both high and low pressure turbos.
    - HPFP failure requiring full fuel system replacement.
    - No bushing in the small end of the connecting rods so over time the wrist pin gathers enough slack to produce abnormal engine noise. Also makes them non rebuildable.
    - EGR cooler failure filling cylinder 8 with coolant and when the customer goes to start the engine bends a rod.
    - Cracked pistons. The theory is that the Navistar Maxxforce pistons are an improvement but it’s unrealistic to expect a customer to replace them all instead of just buying a better truck. And to be honest I havent seen cracked pistons super commonly.
    - Rocker arm failure, tips failing off.
    Theres just so much that goes wrong with these engines and theyre all so expensive and many times catastrophic. They will show no mercy to your bank account. They do have an ability to absolutely pour the power to the ground because the fuel system can provide so much fuel (WAY more than is ever needed) and the turbos will eat it up and produce. But the cost of doing that and keeping it just isnt worth it. Nothing bugs me more than when people tell others to go buy one because “its not as bad as they say”. Usually younger guys that think deleting them is a guarantee automatic reliability button. Every customer with these turds says the same thing “but it was a great price” and desperately regrets it even though we’ve warned them before buying it. I hate it for them but hey you can lead a horse to water, but you cant make it drink.

      So I'm not a Ford Tech but I have bought, built, owned 17 6.4s. Almost all of them I got really cheap because they were misdiagnosed by a Ford Tech. My current single cab daily has little over 500k, and ran 11.23 at 126mph at Wild Horse. That truck I purchased with a " bad motor" " cracked #8 " . That purchase was 300k miles ago and that " bad piston" and junk motor are still right there under the hood, still getting beat on daily . My other current 6.4 was a border security truck, before it was an 800hp 9 1/2 foot tall 40 inch tire shreader. Paid pennies for that and all the interior upgrades, truck has more options than a 6.7 platinum and still scares the hell out of any 1st time passenger 5 years later. So thank you for constantly and consistently making assumptions, completing your diagnostic assessment immediately at the first DTC code you see, not knowing anything about tuning, or the junk one size fits all delete tunes thats been passed around and relabled for these trucks for 17 years, rarely anything about coding, forscan and never taking the time to think beyond its a 6.4 so it must be this . The cheaper they get the more fun I'll have with them. 🤘😂

      @BuckingHorse-Bull dealers and technicians aren't structured to save money even if thier intentions are good they just aren't going to look as deep, as some owner who doesn't have or want to put money into their vehicle. As technicians get more experience and vehicles under their belt they begin to assume and conclude alot because of the experience they had. The 6.4 is pretty strait forward, but combined with emissions, and the brand new " buy a plug and play tuner" market emerged ,exploded. Tunes written by software engineers with little to know mechanical knowledge, for a truck built by Ford and an engine built by International brand new to the world. Than with first time emissions systems thrown on last minute to keep the EPA happy. What could go wrong? Oh and Ford and International were done , just dealing with 6.0 lawsuits, remaining contract. They already had thier 6.7 ready to debut , so do you think they spent alot of time and money training technicians on truck production that was a last minute 6.0 legal Remedy before they could launch thier own engine. 🤷‍♂️

    I had a 2008 6.4 and loved it. Bought it with a blown motor only one piston came out in a single piece just because the crack didn’t make it through the last ring land. Built it up with the delipped pistons, updated rockers and lifters, studs the whole nine. Would frequently hang 20k lbs on the gooseneck and roll and that engine loved it. Never ran the hottest tune, just the 150 hp. Unfortunately black ice took it away. Upgraded to a 6.7 and at times miss that 6.4 because I would consistently get 16 mpgs around town hand calculated and at 75 mph would average 23 mpgs hand calculated. My 6.7 struggles to get even close to that, but it tows like a monster and the exhaust brake is much stronger. So trade offs I can live with.

    My 6.4 blew at 310,000mi. Oil changes every 5k miles. What happened was oil cooler blewup and I got chocolate milk. I do recommend BulletProofDiesel oil cooler upgrade for it. I plan on Cummins swapping mine soon 5.9 24v.

      It didn’t “blow up” then. My 6.0 did the same thing. One of the O-rings in the oil cooler let go. Flushed everything, replaced oil cooler/gaskets and she’s good to go. I think the big key with these motors is to know how to work on them yourself. If you’re clueless behind the wrench these trucks are not for you.

    I have owned a 2008 6.4 since 2011. I haven't had many problems, but there was one major issue. The EGR cooler on my 6.4 started leaking coolant into the intake after about 50k miles... That created a lot of problems with the DPF clogging with burned coolant. After finding that issue, I did an EGR and DPF delete and the difference is night/day (Paying almost $3k to clean or replace a DPF was just a non-starter for me).
    If not for the extensive "Emissions Control" garbage that were added to the 6.4, it would have been a solid engine. I blame the poorly implemented emission control measures for these Powerstrokes having the reputation that they do.

      @@kicker_leopard8685I know it sounds far fetch but i honestly believe that the automates had something to do with the emissions control it wasn't seen as a problem before hand and they had to have known about the effect particulate matter has before hand yet by some magical even in 07 they start "discovering" the type of harm particulate matter has my theory the auto companies worked with the three letter agencies and started developing "emissions control devices" and had them make it law since diesel vehicle were one of the most reliable pieces of hardware out their and seeing how long they could go when properly maintain someone said fuck that and wanted to make and extra dollar eversince they started doing this the life span of the diesel engine went into the shitter engines are being replaced with less then 80,000. Miles on It maybe more if your lucky but the cost to maintain them has gone up and then here comes the electric car and the political push for that so called zero emissions it just feels a little like we are being hearded along like cattle and being told to go with it if the emissions were so bad why is it that these companies didn't invest into better pistons, like speed of air or turbos with bigger inlets to allow better air flow or things like lift pumps use less feul mean less soot which means less emissions allow for better air curculation nope instead let's gag it choke it and when it finally blows up within the warranty period you scrape the block and put a new one in it to repeat the process why is it that we have to live in a throw away society people want to talk about the environment but have no issue burying garbage in mountain tops throwing away materials that can use more efficiently the one thing that makes me want to chuck a tablet across the room I engineers speaking about making thier engines more efficient yet their using more feul increasing temperature which melts and put a lot of unnecessary stress on everything because their paid to why can't we be smarter with way we live Is what autistic ass is trying get at why gotta live like idiots we are humans with a mind that has no boundaries yet we are to busy fighting each other in the realm of politics starting wars that makes no sense but because money we look a little how you say dumb I honestly hope we as a species wise up in the future I know it's just and engine but it goes beyond the engine and goes towards society as a whole we are being sheep and are being scared into the line with everyone else can't do this because that will cause "climate issues" can't say that because some will feel oppressed or discriminated against it just seems more like we are "doing as we are told" and this suppose to be the "land of the free home of the brave"

    It has nothing to do with the pistons not being made well, it’s a flawed fuel bowl design that causes piston 7 and 8 not to be able to handle the egt heat during regen and a flawed intake manifold causing flawed cool air supply to those pistons. The pistons themselves are very strong the flawed design just causes them to crack

Still, I have never been anything but pleased with the fuel milage I have been able to attain with the 6.4. For the dually that probably should have been on a gooseneck trailer. That's a lot of weight to have on the hitch without weight distribution. Saw a person pulling like that one time with class 4 frame mounted hitch but the removable hitch ball setup they used was only rated for 5000 lbs. That's sketchy. Awesome find on a 6.4L truck for $7500 that isn't beaten to shit.

    this guy is a real genius... he doesn't know which one is more accurate between the averaging onboard fuel economy computer or the exact measured number from the fuel pump and the exact mileage from the odometer that gives you exact mathematical numbers. Just think, this guy has a shop and does inspections for the public...

    • @powerstrokecentral
      @powerstrokecentral  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      The pump is not always accurate either is the computer especially for a 17 year old truck. I have been measuring fuel economy both ways for the 4 other diesel trucks I own. There is really no way to determine the actual fuel economy unless you are in a perfect scenario. Bigger tires wind conditions and what gas pump you fill up at all play a factor in fuel economy. I’d like to hear how you measure perfect fuel economy with your mathematical equation. I also used those numbers as a comparison between what is on the computer and what is at the pump.

    • @centraltexasfoxbodies

    • @bruington49
      @bruington49 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@powerstrokecentralyou don’t get to see those factors broken down cause it’s a total, but gallons filled at a pump and hand calculation is very accurate to what your getting for fuel mileage, yes pumps are a factor that do change but it’s not very much, depending on state gas pumps are proved/calibrated every 1 to 2 years, I work for a measurement company, hand calculation vs on board computer is far more accurate
