Because a lockdown that leaves you with more free time does, in fact, make for a good time to revisit old games.

Oh man, I had King Kong on my psp, I was playing it with headphones in during class in high school, the principal came in, I tried to hide it, doing so the headphone came out and a loud roar bursted from my pocket lol it was totally obvious it came from me. I got my psp back at the end of the school day 😂

To this day I’ve still never played a handheld game as ambitious as Medal Of Honor Heros. I use to play the multiplayer back in the day soooo much. It supported up to 32 players in a single game which for 2008 was insane! I’m a proud Vita owner but the multiplayer games on the vita only support up to 8 players if you’re lucky. Even most console games to this day still don’t support up to 32 players in games besides a handful. I wish Medal Of Honor Heros was still able to be played online as those were some of the best handheld days to ever exist, and if anyone else ever played you know what I mean!

5:25 as an embedded developer, I have to say thank you for appreciating stuff like this. Optimization based on different hardware is something that often goes unnoticed, but requires a good amount of thought and work to get correct. People generally only notice it when it's awfully done. Anyways, great video as always. I remember being awestruck when I saw coded arms for the first time back when the psp came out. I thought, wow, that's a portable console game? There were some games in here I didn't know about either. Thanks for the great list!

That game made me quite popular in the high school cafeteria. People would even trade me food to play a round. I remember picking it up on my first trip to NYC. I loved how they gave the option to aim with the analog stick and move with the face buttons. Took some getting used to, but once you did it was FAR superior in terms of aiming control for an FPS on PSP. I played it online all the time.

Sweet vid, keep 'em coming. Anyhow, I'm merely surprised he didn't mention the ability to play an assortment of these PSP FPS titles on the VITA with "improved" controls via the dual analog sticks. In fact, a few other individuals also commented on this. It should be noted that games like Battlefront 2 and Resistance: Retribution (for example) can be downloaded onto the VITA, and then one can choose to reconfigure the controls to take advantage of this particular handheld's capabilities if so inclined. Trust me, it makes a world of difference and allows these titles to be played the way they're intended to be played - without the PSP's limitations. Even still, the PSP is a fantastic device and I might have to find a copy of 'Coded Arms' one of these days. Sheesh, I've never even heard of it.

I loved Coded Arms, and I still have my copy. I actually bought it again digitally to play on my vita, and it runs pretty well there. The second analog stick can be mapped to the face buttons, so the gameplay is better. I would disagree that the sequel was better though, I preferred the first one over the second one. There just wasn't as much depth, in my opinion, to the second one. I spent so much time collecting all of the weapons and armor upgrades in Coded Arms, and I played up to level 160 in the infinity level to max out every weapon. I just didn't feel like I wanted to keep laying the same levels on Contagion once I was done with it. Yeah, the gameplay was repetitive on the first one, but the procedurally generated levels made it a different experience every time. I still go back to it occasionally when I want to play something nostalgic.

The levels were huge too. And its one of the only FPS be it PC, console, handheld I was really good at on leaderboards. Was quite proud of my skill level at it lol. Sucks the servers are no more but great memories of it. The Socom 16 player online mplayer was also great around when the PSP first came out but it was amazing that anyone could go 32.

Aw, bless you dude. That's one of the things I love about the PSP/PS Vita the communities for online were super tight and fun to play with. Medal Of Honour really nailed it on PSP, went back to the days where it was one of the best FPS franchises. The leaderboards maybe down but the love for FPS on sony's consoles never died Killzone Mercenaries for Vita managed to hold out a constantly dedicated player base until just last year and so did Black Ops declassified.

That's what sucks about this new pay-to-play online console fee (fuck you xbox, thanks for nothing!), they can yank the servers when ever they want. You can't go back and revisit old online games. It's total b.s. But they expect you to keep paying "to connect". Such a scam, really. I went straight to PC just for this reason alone. Consoles are only good for campaigns and free to play games like Fortnite, etc. Although most of those F2P games are better on PC. The online fee ruined the console experience.

Of course, if you have the PSN Store digital versions of these games, you can play them in the Vita, where UMD loading times are erased, and you can reconfigure the controls to make them into true, twin analog-stick controlled games.
I also do this with some 3rd session shooters and other games, where twin analog sticks feels more natural. The PSP entry into the Resistance: Fall of Man series - Resistance:Retribution - is an excellent 3rd person shooter. On the PSP, you're limited to either using the analog stick for movement and the face buttons to aim (which feels unnatural, because your aiming becomes really stiff), or, you can swap them around and use the face buttons to move and the analog stick to aim (which again feels unnatural, because they're swapped around from how most people would expect to play).
Fortunately, because you can remap the buttons on the Vita when playing PSone and PSP games, you can assign the right analog stick to act as the face buttons, which feels a lot more natural. You have to play around with the in-game settings for aim sensitivity, but one you nail it, Resistance: Retribution is far more payable and almost feels a different game as a result. It's my preferred way to play. Actually, it's almost a shame they didn't build in a first-person camera.
Oh, and if you like your FPS shooters a little more retro, there's an excellent port of Duke Nukem 3D for the Vita. I'd love to play PSone FPS Alien: Resurrection on the Vita too, but that never made it to the European PSN Store. I'll have to investigate if its on the North America store instead.

I guess the people that kept complaining about the fps games on psp never played dreamcast, cuz i was absolutely used to the controls of coded arms, medal of honor, and even MGS portable ops because quake 3 arena used the same control scheme back in the dreamcast days... So it was easy to pick up and play

It's the best game on PSP, hands down. But it is a massive, ridiculous slog at the start. I didn't start to hit my stride until about the 10 hour mark , but then got hundreds of hours' worth after that. So decide if it's worth the investment I guess. XD

One of my favorite Games on the PSP was and is statt Wars battlefront 2 and you already named it. Specially the space fights are nice.
The Vita did not sell very well, because of the memory card prices. It was way too high. If a system sells well, third party will follow, but Sony was too greedy.
I can't understand, why they have not seen this flaw.

I remember playing King Kong before on my friend white PS2 slim. I was annoyed that there were no health bars so the only way to notice if my health is low is when the menu theme starts playing in the background which makes me think Rockstar were trying to copy this idea on GTA IV because there are 6 unused audios named as DEATH_0X which is odd how did they describe it like that since there were a few showcase videos by fans of their theories.
Speaking about switching to third person when playing as King Kong reminds me of Terminator 3 Rise of the Machines. It's also a FPS game but there was few levels like where the Terminator takes an Immobilized resistance to safety until another Terminator shows up walks to him saying he must be terminated and the game goes to third person while fighting with the evil one and does it again when facing the T-X.

I was a launch PSP owner. Looking back it wasn't anything necessarily amazing. But it's a good device for emulators. The memory cards at launch were ridiculously overpriced. A 4GB sandisk was almost $100. The UMD being plastic on the outside felt weird. Slow loading times obviously.
Back in the day I did use it to play music on as well. But like I said, getting storage was incredibly overpriced to even store music on.
