In this video, we’re going to talk about the 4 reasons for high blood sugars in the morning.
This condition is called the dawn phenomenon. It can happen if you are a type 1 or type 2 diabetic, or if you have insulin resistance really bad.
Causes of elevated morning blood sugar:
    1. Spike in Cortisol - Normally between 12 and 3 am, you have higher insulin sensitivity in the liver, so the blood sugar works a lot better. But, cortisol which mobilizes glucose for action and stress, peaks between 6 and 9 in the morning.
    2. Type 1 diabetes - There’s a growth hormone spike that can mobilize the blood sugar.
    3. Type 2 diabetes - The liver is making glucose called gluconeogenesis. Also, glucagon and epinephrine are hormones that can spike blood sugar. If you are a type 2 diabetic for a long period of time, you are eventually going to lose the ability to produce insulin.
    4. Consuming a lot of carbs the night before.
What to do if you have high blood sugar in the morning:
    • Give it time - Do the healthy ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting
    • Exercise
    • Avoid carbs - especially the night before
    • Take apple cider vinegar diluted with water the night before

It took several months of IF, but my AM blood sugar was 140 av, now low to mid '90s in early AM and stays upper 70s-mid 80s during day. I was a rather stubborn case. Excellent, Dr. Berg.

If on Keto make sure you eat the proper fats and even then some people can't tolerate a high fat diet because the receptor sites get clogged and they become insulin resistant. There are actually some studies that show fat being a culprit in some insulin resistant people. Remember, we are all different so you need to follow what works for you. If you experience some bad things when going to Keto, then you can either back off or stop IF it continues after a few weeks. No one knows your body more than you do and you should know how you feel.
Also, in the morning you are slightly dehydrated and this can cause an elevated blood sugar as well. Drink 16 ounces of water and wait 30 minutes and then check your blood sugars. If it decreases compared to NOT drinking water then you know the issue stems from dehydration.

I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes about two years ago. My OB wanted to go straight to meds, but I insisted on trying diet first. The ADA meal plan they gave me actually made it WORSE. Carbs are carbs whether whole grain or refined. The ADA plan actually included MORE grains than I typically eat.
I went low carb and my blood glucose reading were great except for mornings. I started taking 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in water after dinner, and that corrected those readings. Other things that were helpful: staying hydrated, and drinking lots of unsweetened green tea. I boiled fresh ginger with cloves, cinnamon, and cardamom pods before adding the green tea. I drank an entire pot of this tea almost every day. I ate most of my carbs in the morning and avoided them later in the day.
I can't emphasize how important it is to stay hydrated. I experimented and found drastic drops in blood glucose within 20- 30 minutes of drinking a huge glass of water or tea, even with fasting blood glucose. On days when I didn't drink water or tea, a half hour or so didn't have much effect on blood glucose readings.

Kororo Pocoro, I have Apple cider vinegar (ACV) about 3 times a day with meals. At breakfast I take it in capsule form. Other times I have it in a large glass of soda water with a little cordial. The soda and cordial cover the strong ACV, lemon works best, it also dilutes the acid in the vinegar to minimise harm to teeth. I used to love soft drink, this way I still have a fizzy drink without much sugar. Now soft drink tastes way too sweet.

Two weeks ago after your vid on Apple cider vinegar I started taking 2tbsp before bed and have not tested out of Keto in the am once!

Dawn effect used to drive me nuts. At this point, after 18 months on LCHF (not necessarily keto) and a 90lb weight loss, I still tend to have a glucose level near 100 when I first get up in the morning. Within a few hours it is always down in the 80s, all by itself. My A1C is 5.1 at this point and my daily carb intake is typically under 30 grams. I try to just do my program and I no longer concern myself with the dawn effect. These videos are always helpful in understanding how these things work.

I already had some electrolyte plus acv. Drank same yesterday eve and during the night as I have drink by bed since I get migraines during the night often. When irritability started this am I ate a little nutritional yeast. Guess I need to exercise early to help w this. I'm very thin about 113 lbs so I imagine I have IR instead of having diabetes yet. Dr. Berg, is it good or bad to eat in the morning when your insulin is already high from having high blood sugar? I could see one thought that it would be good to eat because your insulin is already high to begin with and it would prevent you from eating slightly later in the morning or lunch and increasing your blood sugar/insulin again. On the other hand I could see why you do not want to eat during this time period because your blood sugar would go even higher than the elevated level it is.

    Great video! Admiration!
I wonder if cortisol release is happening precisely between 6AM and 9AM or the spike is linked to the time of wake up which is normally stressful for the body (stress = cortisol = glucose)? Would it worth adjust wake up time before training in order to "compliment" fasting for weight loss?
In the past two months I' have been training in a fasting state mornings 8AM-9AM for an hour with first meal/caloric intake after 12PM and got impressive belly fat loss.

Thanks a lot for the information. I have prediabetes 2. I was on metformin for 5 years and my sugar tests showed no difference. Then I stopped and started intermittent fasting for 6 months and then OMAD from July. I have noticed that my morning blood sugar goes to 135 at 8am and then starts to drop by noon 105-110 before I eat. After lunch (Keto) it does not change and shows 110-120. I'm thinking of continuing until my blood sugar drops further from 135 to 110. What do you think? Thanks a lot again!!!!!!!!!!

It’s funny, I’m very familiar with Dawn phenomenon as a type-2. Even when going keto, as blood sugar was slowly going down as I was doing keto, I still had DP every morning.
Fast forward to me starting water fasting, I no longer have DP. I record my morning and evening glucose numbers, and as of now, my fasting glucose and late day glucose is practically the same now, typically within 1-5 points of each other.
My fasting glucose levels last night was 79 and this morning 71.
On day 10 of a planned 40-day water fast. 😊

@@aureliemiyalu9268 Hi. Water fasting is not eating food and typically only drinking water with electrolytes.
Me personally, I finished this fast after 40 days and nights of only water, black coffee, and sometimes Powerade Zero.
I drank at least 2 liters a day of water. Glucose went from 299 to 79 in first 5 days of fasting and eventually got as low as 60-65 sometimes, but stabilized at 70 day and night.
      I lost 50lbs.

Sadly, at this point in my life (very overweight & 60 years old) I'm not able to excercise that number down. I had to use insulin. IF you're in decent shape, please try exercising it down. It would about 40 min. for me & my crazy number.
I started KETO on 6/7. I am feeling a little better, & have reduced a ton of inflammation in my body. 😀 That, alone, helps me tremendously.
I have a goal of losing 75 more pounds. I'll be able to begin excercising in about 2 more weeks. That should be about 15 more pounds off.
I have several health issues. Spine/cervical, & both knees need replaced (should have been replaced 5 years ago) ......However, I've only cheated twice, within one day. I'm ok with that. At the time, however, I kept beating myself up. ☹ Let me know what helps you in the next week, etc.
I'd much rather NOT use insulin, IF I could excercise. Pretty soon, though!!

This is why people need to do several glucose measurements throughout the day, or better yet, get a continuous glucose monitor, so as to get an overall average of ones glucose. Glucose, much like blood pressure, can fluctuate wildly. Simply taking an isolated measurement is meaningless if one wants to know anything about how healthy one is. It would be like looking at the freeway in the morning, and noticing a traffic jam, and just assuming that this freeway is constantly congested 24 hours a day.

Ik this is old but if you have any answers I’m 21 years old power lifter, I work out a lot, I do intense weight training 5x a week and do cardio usually everyday of 15-30 minutes resulting in 6.5-12.5 miles on my bike, and my diet is really healthy, the only sugar I get is from my very first meal which has a lot of fruit and my fasting glucose was 120 today?

    • @alphacause
      @alphacause 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@gino1605 If you are taking your glucose reading in the morning, upon waking up, your glucose can be abnormally high because your liver is pumping out too much glucose as a result of elevated cortisol in the morning. This is called the "Dawn Effect", and it is a well known phenomenon that is observed in many people. Its nothing to get alarmed by, because blood glucose levels can fluctuate wildly throughout the day. So a single reading is not always a good indication of your overall glycemic control. Check your glucose throughout the day, 4 hours after you have eaten, and see if it has come down. If you can, get a continuous blood glucose monitor which will check your blood glucose throughout the day and give you an average. Secondly, get a HbA1c test, which measures your average blood sugar over three months. This will tell you whether you have a problem with glucose control. If that test reveals high blood glucose, its time to practice a very strict low carb diet (so get rid of the fruit) and increase the periods in which you fast until the blood glucose normalizes. I hope that helps.

Do these time frames, such as 8 AM Cortisol spike, hold true for everyone regardless of one's sleep schedule? For example, what if you work the night shift and sleep during the day?

    • @Julie-nc2mb
      @Julie-nc2mb 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Your cortisol raises to wake you up. So if you are regularly on a sleep schedule and wake up without an alarm, it is your cortisol that helped in awakening.
