  • Rusty Japanese Knife Restoration Video
    I found this knife from japan recycle shop for 5$. I think it is easy to restore, but it's not like that. This knife is made from harden steel, so take a lot time to make it sharp. However I really love this knife after the restoration.
    I hope you find something useful & enjoy this video!
    I am happy to receive your feedback, advice, suggestions to improve myself.
    !!! I apologize for the mistake if I have made in this restoration !!!

      I think the pits are too deep and grinding them smooth will compromise the edge metal. The knife is single bevel. Usually harder material which is the edge material is the flatter side. The one with the bevel is the softer metal.

      @Cosine Only if had a hammered finish to begin with. In general, this is a deba knife, not be used for general cutting but for breaking down big fish and bones. I seriously doubt that it was hammered in the first place. Because that wouldn't make any sense.

  • @beseakos
    @beseakos 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I am glad you didn’t just asspull called this a japanese knife but actually retained the hollow grind on the back and the single bevel. Really good work with a limited set of tools. Though I highly doubt it was originally a 5 dollar knife when it was new. Still. It really is a renovation and a fine work.

    I admire you in taking the time to restore a rusty knife...(don't know if it is worth it, because most of the name brand Japanese knife would have brand name on the knife blade). I made a bushcraft knife out of my lawnmower blade that has seen the end of its life three years ago. Due to it is a soft steel, I had to go thru the hardening/tempering process to get the proper hardness. It was an experimental, trial run, and did not expect anything good out of this, just for fun and learn something out of it. The end result is a working bushcraft knife, which I got great satisfaction out of the whole process. Good job...

    Excellent. In these restoration videos, I would love to see a percentage split for the finished product of split between original parts vs new. For this one, as the blade was fully restored, I would say...it's pretty high on the original parts side. Also, an estimate of market value of restored artefact would be very interesting.
