2:27 You're absolutely right Cuarón, some films are very celebrated at the time that are released, but as time goes on, nobody remembers them. And Gravity is one of those films.
True, in about 2 or 3 years, these movies would only be remember through the director's film profolios, and perhaps red box, netflix, other sorts of entertainment sites and people that love'em. Then more critically acclaim movies would come along and do the same as Gravity. Just the way it is
Nope your wrong. Gravity will be studied for years to come because of its technical achievements.
Movies like that would only get talked about when a movie that has similar use of technology is at hand, Remember Avatar, the movie became an sensation for setting the bar in new motion capture technology, years went by and certain different types of film comes along....like Gravity for instance.

Children of Men and Y Tu Mama Tambien will outlive all of us. The fashionable opinions concerning Gravity really don't reflect his talent as a director; even the first Star Wars suffered from a similar backlash.
When you listen to these directors, you realize what a rich year we had in film.
For some reason I'd love McQueen to work with Tom hardy. I don't know why exactly, but they seam like a director-actor duo that could really be on the same page and deliver something exceptional.

@@farid1406you're right, it does. You follow the story of a TV series weekly. And if it's good enough for years. A 90 to 120+ minute movie may stay with you, but it doesnt have a week to week hold on your attention. If that makes sense.

Stillers directors attributes are a little.. Underwhelming for a directors round-table... But, he had loads of interesting and insightful things to say so i am glad he was on.
I have and its great. But he is still not on the level of these other guys. At least as far as the work they have done so far. 'Gravity' and 'Children of Men' are 2 of the greatest films in 21st century cinema, Greengrass reinvented the action-franchise and reinforced film-fans faith that action and quality can go hand in hand, Steve McQueen's films are so raw and have so much passion in them that makes him one of the most exciting people to look out for right now, and David O. Russell, is on a freaking roll; From three kings to 'The fighter' and 'SLPB', and now he is filming 'American Hustle'.. this guy is so good. I haven't seen any of Daniels work, but i am sure its great. I wasn't saying Stiller sucks as a director, he is good, but I just do't think - as far as filmography - you can argue that he is in the league of Cuaron, McQueen or O. Russel.. Just my opinion.

David O rusell and Alfonso Cuaron seem to be the only ones with enough confidence in their talent to not get all worked out with the fact that television is becoming better. They were laughing and weren't as uptight and arrogant as the others.

@@orangewarm1 exactly, there should be more conflict and constructive criticism to get into more precise and nuanced areas of discussion. To break down a topic and refine it to a deeper point of view. I love watching these round table discussions and wish some were longer, but alot of time they just always agree with each other, which is fine but a little argument & passionate debate from mutually respected professionals does make for deeper thought and conversational territory.

Did you see American Hustle? It was full of outstanding performances.
Ryan Smith I tought it was even better. 12 Years was a great and powerfull picture, but it was everything what you would expect from it. I loved AH's playfulness and its ambivalent characters. And I think there was a lack of ambivalence in 12 years a slave.
i think Cuaron's movie is creative, smart and effective and everybody except Greengrass seem to be so jealous about the fact that he manage to present himself as a good and talented director and that his movie is by far making more money than the others

the whole "TV vs movies" making better narratives was interesting. steve mcqueen got really defensive about it. i think he felt it was an attack on his good movies. if had only realized his movies are the exception.
of course television has plenty of junk, like the reality circuit, but it has plenty of good ones like HBO and AMC. it also simply has more time to tell a story, so it can focus on characters or particular elements longer than a 2 hour movie. movies have to tell a lot in a short time and has to keep maintain a pace at the same time.
Yes but the advantage of films is that in their short running time they can capture something essential that is lost in an unwieldy series that goes on forever.
Would be nice to watch the 'three amigos' in the same roundtable!

I don't really understand the amount of negative comments on this video. I learned just as much from this Director's roundtable as I did the others.
it's mostly because the interviewer can ask so many better questions...he repeated three questions he asked last year (with multiple directors returning from previous years)

I miss the previous rounds that were unedited. Now it loses that awkward tension with the interviewers boilerplate questions and the directors pauses in responding, or how they interrupt each other or have their own moments (ie last year with Tarantino, van sant, Hooper, etc)
Can't stress this enough - and I assure you I don't use capitals liberally but - I FUCKING LOVE PAUL GREENGRASS.
I love how he mixes veteran and unknown actors.
I love how he commands the editing process.
I love how he strips away all the unnecessary 'Hollywood movie' bullshit that bogs down every other script.
And of course I love that he's from the UK.

For me personally, I would have a moviebuff-gasm if Nolan, Fincher, PTA, Wes Anderson, Spielberg, Scorsese, Tarantino, Lucas, and Allen in one table.
Kezia Hutabarat If Nolan and Fincher sat at the table you KNOW that there will be questions of film vs digital. Nolan hates digital filmmaking as much as Fincher hates film :p would pay to see that fight if it ever happened (My money would be on Fincher)

i would love to see director for the animated films. sure they may not be as elite as live action, animated films are just as difficult to direct, plus, some of the highest grossing and best films of all time are animated. just a thought

He’s there to offer a directors point of view. Which at this point, he didn’t have much to add to. Mel Gibson or even Denzel Washington would’ve been better for giving the “talent turned director” view.
I loved how when they asked about the "battles" that went on during the set they just looked at David and he's just like "Idk what you're talking about"

Why is my director Ryan Coogler of 'Fruitvale Station' not in this panel session? Fruitvale won Cannes and Sundance Film Festival and other awards and Ryan got invited to The White House and interviewed on many outlets. Lets not forget he's bout to direct the Rocky Balboa sin off 'Creed.' I hope Ryan makes the next panel. Much support to all the directors in this panel.
He probably wasn't available. They have to make everyone is available and in the same place at the same time. I'm sure they wanted him. :)

McQueen is definitely the best director here. And 12 Years a Slave is the best movie out of all of these.
This might be a controversial thing to point out, but English is my second language too, and part of me thinks that had Alfonso had the freedom to speak in Spanish, he would have won that television vs movies argument. He's a sweetheart and a genius, and he made my favourite Harry Potter movie.

I LOVED 12 years but I can't deny the competition it will be facing this season with DBC. I was so floored by just how good both were. 2013 was a good year in this industry. . .

I can only think that Vallee, as well as Payne, wasn't available. I don't think we've had this good of a year in film since . . .what year did "No Country" and "There Will be Blood" come out, 2007? 2009?
I think DBC wasn't directed all that great. I liked it, don't get me wrong, but the scene when Rayon is crying and saying she doesn't want to die, I thought it was cut way too short. Leto was killing it there, and the scene could've been more touching had it been longer. I do think however, neither Ben Stiller nor Paul Greengrass should be there. I would've liked to see Ryan Coogler, Spike Jonze, Scorsese or Alexander Payne there.
Though, I do think it would be interesting to hear from the DBC director because it took them like, 20 years to make the movie, right? I bet he could give insight on how they had to jump through hoops to get the film done.
Kind of arrogant how they all shut him down for comparing TV to film, he wasn't saying anything false, most modern movies just aren't as sophisticated as modern television anymore
they are all looking at it from the point of view of directors rather than confronting reality i agree with you 100% main stream movies if you look at the highest grossing films you find very little substance wether its jurrasic world, or fast 7. but shows like breaking bad, game of thrones so many more but these are mega hits they are a work of art more so breaking bad.

I don't dispute that all these guys deserve to be here (although, I'm not 100% convinced that Ben Stiller does - not that he's not super talented, but that I didn't think Walter Mitty was particularly spectacular), but I would be really interested in how they would answer if the interviewers asked them what they thought about the fact that there were no women at the table.
I agree that there should be at least one woman at the table (such as Kathryn Bigelow), unfortunately the industry is still dominated by male directors in the higher grossing director positions.
The Goat Metro Most of the women in the business seem to gravitate toward acting. The few that are behind the scenes are usually agents, writers, wardrobe, and make up designers. However, Kathryn Bigelow is a rare breed and had she made a film for 2013, she would've been at this table.
This is based on the Academy Nomination of that particular years movies. Specifically the movies nominated for Best Picture. Again, judging or claiming one doesn't deserve to be here requires you to understand in advance the reason they were chosen to be there. They didn't just randomly search or get "stuck" with new director's. SERIOUSLY, pay the fuck attention to what your saying...lol
jcem24 Maybe you should pay attention to what you're saying. If this Roundtable was based on Oscar nominations, then they have made a mistake. The Secret LIfe of Walter Mitty wasn't nominated for anything at the Oscars. Ben Stiller shouldn't be there, based on your logic. Nor should Lee Daniels.
Isn't there an inherent problem (i.e. systematic sexism) in the fact that women are pidgeon holed into "behind the scenes" roles or often overly sexualized acting roles (see the Bechdel test) and not raised to the artistic and managerial leadership role of Director by big studios and executives and peers?
This roundtable didn't feel nearly as relaxed as the last two. Informative, but very stiff and uncomfortable.
I don't see this weird energy between the directors I keep reading about in the comments. I don't see it at all. I see people trying to express themselves. It's not always easy in an interview. I think they did a fantastic job.
It's interesting how differently the directors and actors talk about things that didn't work out. Jake Gyllenhaal and Josh Brolin in particular were both very comfortable talking about auditions for specific directors or specific films that didn't go well. By contrast, when the directors are asked if they've ever had to let someone go, they all clam up and Greengrass speaks very vaguely and generally. I can understand Daniels not wanting to name the actress if drugs were involved, but the way they all sit there, you can tell they've had to fire someone but they won't even admit to it. Very interesting.
I would love to see a round table with Directors or actors that do horror movies. Robert Englund, etc
There was one well writers/Director, it's called Horror Cafe. Had Carpenter, Barker, Corman, Campbell, Tuttle and Atkins. Sadly it was missing Craven and King. Carpenter and Barker was outstanding thou.
Man, I could listen to McQueen and Cuaron talk about film all day.

this new concept to these roundtables doesn't work, i'm afraid. they used to be interesting because it was just about a bunch of people talking for an hour or so. these constant cut-aways are pretty annoying, the roundtable becoming just another tool for promotion.
Yeah HR, give us the raw footage as well, you'll have twice as many videos for your ads.
I couldn't agree more. The typical person who is interested in watching an hour-length interview with directors regarding process, for example, do not need to be fed faux-artsy 'behind-the-scenes' cuts every few minutes. Save those for the one-minute trailers aimed at attracting mainstream audiences.
It's great seeing two black people here and one gay person. Gives me hope that Hollywood is becoming more diverse. Hope that we will soon see many more female directors as well.

What a great group of talent. I loved American Hustle and it's interesting to see Russell's POV. Gravity was beyond amazing and everything cuaron said was spot on. 12 years a slave was incredible, i still get chills thinking about it but man is MCQUEEN ARROGANT. He is so defensive and idk. He kind of annoyed me. But I guess since he is such An amazing talent, he has gained that right.
discussion was so boring. The best director's discussion was 2012 with Ben Affleck and Quintin Tarantino.
Not because they're the best directors, but because they're entertaining and inspiring and they're interesting to listen.
Captain Phillips' was a brilliant adaptation and the film, to me, at this table. Shocked that Abdi didn't win the Academy Award for his role. His first time acting and alongside of the greatest of all time in Hanks, he crushed the role and seemed extremely genuine.
Imagine a roundtable with Bret Ratner, Uwe Boll, McG, Tyler Perry, Paul W S Anderson, Roland Emmerich and Martin Scorsese not because Scorsese is a bad director, but just so he could school those idiots on how to make a decent movie.
Of that list, I think Uwe is the only genuinely bad director. Everyone else has had their fair share of good or at least decent films.

even though some of these directors are more talented than others (lets face it, walter mitty isn't a masterpiece), they all can provide great insight about the industry due to all the effort and time they put into their movies, it takes years to bring a movie to theatres and so each one of these guys has a unique experience to share, thats why they have these discussions, and thats why they can function even without scorcese or the coen brothers/

A couple of things. Near the beginning, Ben Stiller actively supports truly original film-making - even though the film he is presenting at this round table is a pretty below par remake. Also, Alfonso Cuaron's point about the percentage of truly compelling television as compared with the percentage of compelling films was just spot on.
I would love to see either Scorsese or Nolan with these men, Stiller doesn't being here just yet at least
