I was a single Dad for ten years who brought up two teenage Sons . I had a very conservative office job 9:00am to 5:00pm. Also I was a trained & active artist. I would oil paint in the still of the night 2am to 4am in my little studio . It was the best years of my life. I was a finalist in a prestigious national art prize. Everyone was suprised because nobody knew I was an artist. They were the best years of my life.
Oh boy...this speaks to my core. Other day I said to my sister in law I probably would die if I had to do a 9 to 5... I feel like I would literally die.
Me and my cousin did a very meaningless job today. Somebody had planted cristmas trees and he was worried about the grass growing around the trees, so we had to step on the grass so it was flatend on the ground. My cousin even had a mental breakdown. There was lots of mosquitos and we had to interupt.😂
@raisingarizona2008 not here, trees gotta be organic to sell. When I helped my friend with his trees, I brought my scythe. Gal with a 3 foot long rasor sharp knife swinging on the end of a stick is a lot of fun. I use it a lot on my farm, so I'm faster than most with a gas trimmer. But my friend wasn't prepared for a girl with a scythe. I've never been invited back. That's how to escape drudgery.
Hahhaha, this made me laugh out loud. It's so true !! It is very soul crushing for an artist to have to waste 8 plus hours a day doing something they hate instead of being at home creating. That was my life as well. Not anymore, but I empathize with all those who are stuck in the rut. Break free!! You are a very wise man Dries, and thank you for another fantastic video- sure to change some lives for the better.
How real! I just entered a new job, and I am going nuts! My head runs a marathon while my body is just there sitting seeing time past by... I just don't get it!!. How can everybody be so happy and relax with that kind of life!!! I earn 500 euros a month for 50 hours a week of labour. I have my barchelors degree, certificates, two languages, and feel like a prisioner of circumstances. I can not quick, so I am working on my own personal branding on my free time... Wish me luck!!!
It's sometimes necessary to take on work to afford to live so that we may continue our individual art practices. Whatever it takes to make art if that's your calling because if you are a malnourished drunk due to poverty what kind of quality and reflection will your art have? So, eat consciously and refrain from whatever distracts your focus, then all you have to do is show up, leave the ego at the door, sit at the table and create. Fuck yea.
Definitely something to say about that. I generally agree with you on the drunk part. I don't drink alcohol myself. On the other hand you would be surprised of how many artists made amazing art while being heavily intoxicated.
@@driesketels sure, but not consistently. The work I made when I was a drunk was fantastic until i sobered up years later to find a studio full of half finished pieces. My take is that if you are in this for life, a life of art, then yes, alcohol will let you down.
When I was in my 20's I tried several jobs to earn money and become independent. Every single job I tried I ended up quitting because I was feeling lifeless and depressed, the longest I worked was 3 months, the least 2 days. After a bunch of attenpts I realized that it wasn't for me
