  • Parts & tools:
    2x Mitsubishi OEM Super Long Life Coolant
    Drain pan
    pliers
    safety glasses
    paper towel
    Parts & Tools needed to open engine drain plug(optional):
    jack and jack stands.
    Drain plug crush washer: MF660034
    torque wrench
    6mm hex key
    breaker bar
    Optional tools:
    funnel
    flash light
    gloves
    Notes:
    The mirage has no electronic coolant valves, there is no need to turn on the heater or do anything special to bleed air from the cooling system.
    I checked the cooling system the next day 8 hours after a long drive and there was no air in the cooling system it was still full.
    The thermostat in this car has a jiggle valve, you do not need to get the engine warm to bleed air through the thermostat.

    Cylinder block drain plug takes a 3/8-in Drive 6mm Hex Bit Socket to remove it. About 1 Cup comes out.
    Thanks for the video

    Very good video. One thing I do after filling the radiator is to slightly jack up the side of the car that has the radiator cap--in this case, the driver's side. This makes the cap on the "uphill" side of the radiator. Then when you run the engine, as the coolant circulates the bubbles come to the cap and burst. This ensures you have no air pockets in the system. Add any more coolant if needed. As the coolant warms, it will rise up out of the cap, so shut the motor off when or before this starts to happen.

      Thank you for the kind words. Jacking the car up is not necessary because if you look at a photo of the radiator online you can see that the top of the radiator is already sloped towards the cap so that air will escape with the car on level ground.

      @@welfarewagonrepairs It's just moments when you take camera of it's legs it becomes a bit shaky. If you will cut the video and continue when camera looks at the right place it should look smoother. Anyway continue doing videos. There is lack of videos for this model. Why you don't wash/flush the existing coolant residue with distilled water..?

    • @welfarewagonrepairs
      @welfarewagonrepairs  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Aria,
      The factory service manual as shown at the end of the video does not ask us to flush the coolant with distilled water. Since I am using same brand of coolant (Mitsubishi OEM) and the coolant that came out did not have any particles floating in it like rust and was still the correct color and consistency, I felt comfortable not flushing with water.
      If you are planning on flushing with water then you should pull the engine drain plug after to make sure you get all the water out, which is a bit hard to do because of where its located. Since OEM coolant is premixed it would mess up the coolant concentration if you left any water in the system before adding the new coolant.
      In my personal opinion changing the coolant more often so you get new additives that prevent rust and what not in the system is much more important than flushing with water, especially for a car thats less than 10 years old.

    Hey, great video :D I just changed out the heater core and i'm wondering about bleeding air out of the engine... I filled it up to the top, but it haven't taken the right amount of coolant. Still missing 1 litre as per the owners manual, I know that in the water jacket it's still some coolant left from when I drained the radiator, but that can't be 1 litre... I have also driven the car, waited cople of hours then checked how mutch it was in the radiator. I can see that it has been going down a little. The coolant have then been at the same level as the top radiator hose. I think it's wierd that it havn't filled it self up beacuse I have filled up the expansion tank too. Is it then still some air left in the engine ? There is no leak either, checked for that multiple times :P

      I never measured how much coolant went in or came out. A small amount of coolant may get trapped in things like the throttle body. Remember that if the coolant was low naturally because of gravity the air bubble would be at the top. When i originally bought the car the coolant was low and it resulted in a reduction in the heat output of the car as the heat exchanger is the top of the coolant loop. Does your heat work well? As long as the overflow reservoir is at the full line i wouldn't worry about it.
      from service manual:
      manual transmission 3.97 liter
      automatic transmission: 4.54 liter
      This includes 0.5 liter in the overflow reservoir.

      @@welfarewagonrepairs The heat seems pretty good. Can check out now and then to se if I need to top of the coolant in the radiator until it's full, just hope that the engine doesn't get demaged... Can't see the temp in the engine either because it just has a lamp 😅 But at least the red overheating lamp hasn't come on yet so that's promising.

    • @welfarewagonrepairs
      @welfarewagonrepairs  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@slaztriko The thermometer that turns on the red gauge goes within the coolant. If there was no coolant in the car i don't think the red light would ever turn on as the sensor would not be submerged in coolant. You can buy many cheap "scan tools" that will show you the coolant temperature. The other thing that holds coolant in the engine is the thermostat as it is sealed when you did the coolant change. Try not to stress about it. All the best

    is it really necessary to remove the cylinder block drain plug or we can just refill a new coolant again after draining the radiator?

      @welfarewagonrepairs  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Only changing the radiator and reservoir fluid is definitely an option. Within the video I show how much fluid comes out of the engine drain plug to give you an idea of how much fluid you will be leaving within the engine.

    do i need to do all those extra steps or can i just fill it up if it’s empty ?

    • @welfarewagonrepairs
      @welfarewagonrepairs  15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You can fill the radiator all the way up and the overflow tank to the high line whenever it’s empty. Remember to only open the radiator cap if the engine has not been started for a few hours (is cold). Opening the radiator cap to fill may only be necessary if the car ran out of coolant at some point.

      The green light means that the coolant is cold, it should come on when you start the engine then go away after 2-5 minutes then not come back on. Does the light come when it’s not suppose to? Like after it has gone off for the first time while driving. Does the obd2 scanner show readings that don’t make sense like the temperature going down while the engine is running?

    Question - if the coolant is 1 inch above the L line, do I simply add it more through the coolant reservoir? Or do I need to add the coolant thru the radiator?

    • @welfarewagonrepairs
      @welfarewagonrepairs  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is not a reservoir, it is an overflow tank. You can add directly to the overflow tank. The owners manual recommends against opening the radiator as it poses a risk of injury. Ideally you should not be able to ever add to the radiator as it should always be full.

    • @welfarewagonrepairs
      @welfarewagonrepairs  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@edgaryzen4925 the reason i don’t call it a reservoir is because it only moves fluid to and from the radiator when the pressure of the radiator exceeds a certain amount or a vacuum is created. This means that the engine coolant could be empty and the overflow tank could still be full. Originally when I bought the car the coolant was an inch below the low line and when I filled the overflow tank I noticed the fluid did not make it to the radiator which was partially empty. It may have if the radiator got hot enough but I didn’t want to take any chances
