I think it’s pretty cool that some of the best Atari age home brewers are getting releases from “Actual Atari”. Bentley bear is a good candidate for the pack in that should have been to compete with SMB. I’m sure the buyout of AA has lead to some of this, which is pretty cool. I picked it up as I don’t have the 2600+ and my composite modded 7800 doesn’t work great through my retrotink 5x. I agree though let’s go Analogue! After the 64 of course….
As someone who has the original consoles but also desires wireless controllers where possible, I do like that they are released DB-9 adapters for the wireless controllers. I did purchase those to keep my classic consoles up to par with my other consoles with wireless controllers.
I’m actually do want to get a 7800+. I had a 2600 but my parents couldn’t afford to get neither a colecovision nor a 7800. I just hope I could find games for it in a vintage video game store.
This is for Atari fans, if you don’t like it, don’t even share this on your podcast; the guy with glasses always bitches about everything!, I bet he does not even play videogames….😅
Regarding the 2600+ game compatibility. There have been firmware updates released to improve this. I have at least 70 2600/7800 carts. And they all work on the 2600+. As for the 7800+….i really don’t understand why they are doing this. The new 7800 game releases will also work on the 2600+. I believe that the wireless controllers will also work on the 2600+ via an adapter that they are releasing. So it is really no different to the 2600+ at all. I have no intention of buying this new system. But I love my 2600+
It’s for people who grew up with the 7800 and not the 2600, the people who didn’t get the barely functioning NES. Speaking of NES, at least Atari makes enough units unlike the NES classic so scalpers don’t spike prices and the cord isn’t 3 inches long.
@@EgGu-l9y The 7800+ isn’t a mini console, I was having a counter arguement as the whole point of this console is to play your cartraiges on a TV, the NES classic is to have people play 30 of the NES’s classics. Note: keep in mind Atari started theirs with the Atari flashback 1, and 2 in the 2000’s. This is the reason why U perfer Atari as I got a flashback 2 and an NES classic in 2019. I liked the NES classic but Atari has more games and better games.
The problem I have is they decided to go the original cartridge route but then also decided to go the emulation route, where gameplay suffers, sounds suffer, and timing all suffers. If you're going to charge more than $60 and only include 1 game, then the least they could've done was go FPGA to get a 99% accurate translation of the games. Going cartridge, charging significantly more than other emulation consoles, and only including 1 game just doesn't add up. I like the cartridge port, but with that should also come FPGA hardware to keep the original feel of the games.
@@EgGu-l9y first of all. This method keeps the cost down , and emulates 99% percent of the games library besides 3 games. 2600 and 7800. Also keep in mind, this console isn’t for playing 2)00/7809 games.2nd of all, If you wanna play those game’s legally. Get a flashback unit for 20-30 dollars, those have 100+ games and a lot of those are classic games by Atari. If you already own these games and don’t wanna have to use a RF or wanna play these games in HD quality from the cart, get the 7800/2600+, well guess what? Nintendo doesn’t have that, if you wanna play NES games then get the Nintendo online service, if you already own some games or wanna get into owning NES games, there’s no option besides a retron which I used and fried my copy of Mario bros. Either deal with a piece of hardware created almost 40 years ago, which is known for its crappy cartridge port or pay 20 dollars a year for NES/SNES/GAMEBOY games.
@@EgGu-l9y the console can play pretty much the whole library except for about 5. The console’s controller is near identical to the original and excepts original things. I was wrong to compare this to the classic as both are completely different systems. Also if you’re wondering why they used emulation, it’s most likely to keep the price at 130 and not 200. This is for people who already own 2600 games and the flashbacks are for people who wanna play these games, or older folks who wanna relive their childhood but no longer have the console or games. The NES classic is a flashback unit just with less games, but more popular games from other companies and a bit higher quality menu.
The Colecovision/Intellivision/5200 controllers all used a number pad. If Analogue was going to make an FPGA console, it would have controllers with number pads and compatibility with these three systems. I think the retro community would lose it's collective mind and buy them up fast. Aside from that, a 2600/7800 FPGA console by Analogue would be :fire:
I totally agree with that guy saying that the atari 7800+ is the same console as the atari 2600+ and what not, because it is. If i was atari why not coming up with a 5200+ wich could play both atari 400 and 5290 cartrides trough an extra slot, because i willconsider that to be something different rather then keeping stuck with their 2600 line up of editions of it😟😟
the 7800 was sank by the Crash. although Atari did produce Trak-Balls for 5200 & VCS/7800; they failled to port CRYSTAL CASTLES for the later systems ! an "Arcade" version, packaged with Trak-Ball would have been a hit ! BTW Epyx games were a Commodore 64 powerhouse developer / publisher
I'm buying it with Berzerk and Frenzy. It's not like things like this happen everyday. Im not going to cry over the fact Atari of today is nowhere near the size of it's old corporate format.... But they are trying. Now with AtariAge's help.... hopefully we can get a Jaguar too. I'm all for this resurgence. Im sick of PS and Xbox. If it wasn't for Atari and Nintendo.... I wouldn't be gaming still.
I’m not really big into Atari (lil before my time, first console I grew up with was the NES and then A Genesis+SNES) I did find my dads 2600 only 1 problem I can’t play it as of right now because it’s got the fork tv connectors (pre-coaxial) I am not gonna go out my way to get the adapter needed when I will probably play for few mins !!!
Good lord, you guys are whining for the sake of whining. Not sure what more you expect from the 7800+, if the emulation can be improved then it shouldn't matter if it's FPGA. For what it is, the vast majority of Atari fans are happy with what we're getting.
So you don’t listen very well. This doesn’t even improve upon the last console. That’s what they’re pointing out. One way they COULD have improved is FPGA or non emulation🤷🏻♂️
I had the 7800 as a kid so when I saw this I was interested because I thought it would come with a 7800 multicast like the 2600+ did. When I saw that it only comes with Crystal Quest I lost a lot of interest and when I looked up the current price of 7800 games I completely lost interest. Pole Position 2 was not bad at $16 but most of the other games I had were $30+.
Hate those lame-ass emulation machines that dump a rom from the cartridge. Don't care for the extra features not even wireless controllers and HDMI output. Just make real hardware and I'm buying.
Because it's basically the 2600+ with wireless controller support and Bentley Bear included being called the 7800+. Atari should've used FPGA hardware to give full compatibility, perfect gameplay and perfect sound.
Im a Gen-Xer. I don't understand the point of all these Atari's. I ADMIT I'm out of the loop on technology and all these plug-n-play thingies. My knowledge goes no further than a box TV and my 16-Sega Genesis. But WHY NOT just buy an original Atari 2600. They're still affordable and work great. My Atari 2600 JR from 1986 works perfectly first try every time. As retro collecter this makes no sense to me.
I might be the original "7800 fanboy" since it was a CIB set I completed back in the early 2000s... and I didn't buy this. It's the 2600+ in a new shell, and given how long it takes to dump a 7800 game before it loads on the 2600+'s emulator... forget it.
Dip switches are not retro! I tried so hard to fight back on this. I sent emails and made forum posts. I don't own the 2600+ or the 7800+ because they are rom dumpers with 8-year-old smartphone processors. A majority of owners of this and the Atari 2600+ will be older users with poorer eyesight, and now, to change games, you need your reading glasses and tweezers instead of a nice menu.
Atari is a for-profit business and wants to sell things. Those sales enable them to develop more products people may like, such as new homebrew and vintage/re-issue cart releases, the excellent reproduction controllers they've been making, and yes, new consoles. Releasing the 7800+ doesn't somehow harm you, and it provides a great option for people who either haven't bought the 2600+ yet or prefer 7800 styling or maybe even wanted a second 2600+ or to give one as a gift. The new wireless controllers can be bought individually, include DB9 dongles, and work with both new and original consoles. I don't see the problem. It also doesn't make sense for Atari to develop a FPGA system for miniscule benefit that most people would barely notice only to have to charge $200+ for it and consequently garner only a small fraction of the sales, all just to satisfy you. They want to sell to the broadest market of people who aren't just hard core retro nerds but may have fond memories or are curious about classic Atari gaming. 2600+ compatibility is high, is constantly improving, and provides a good experience with much less hassle than original hardware and miles better than previous plug-and-play junk. 7800+ will likewise. I know people want a 5200+, and nobody has said it won't happen. But you do realize the 5200 was a colossal failure with a small library and atrociously bad controllers, which was cancelled within 2 years of launching right? The 7800 platform was produced and actually made money for Tramiel Atari for several years, and is much more closely related to the 2600, so yes it is easier and makes sense to support that platform. For the 5200 they already released the 400 Mini. I'll admit that its 5200 support is basically still broken and almost worthless, but it supports equivalent, sometimes identical, Atari 8-bit versions of several significant 5200 games, including Pac-Man, with a controller setup that actually works worth a crap.
Honestly, you don’t see a problem with hardware that is incapable of playing current games like Rikki and Vikki, which can be played on original hardware from 38 years ago, but can’t play it on a modern re-creation from Atari themselves? What is it with normalizing lowered expectations and backfilling them with excuses as to why it can’t be done when there are hobbyists who are single handedly creating FPGAs in their spare time but Atari can’t do it? No way.
@@RISCGames Sounds like absolutist logic to me. Problem?? It's a product offering, and a pretty good one - nobody has to buy it. The general public hasn't heard of Rikki and Vikki, or most other homebrews, but they have heard of Donkey Kong. I don't think anybody has said it will never work - hopefully it will at some point. The small body of games that don't work is far outweighed by the ones that do. It's not as if zero fun can be had with these consoles because it won't play Rikki and Vikki or a small selection of other games. If it's that important to you then OG hardware is still an option.
I’m quite frustrated actually because I WANT AN EXCUSE to buy this but there isn’t one. For the life of me I don’t understand why they wouldn’t create simple yet modernized reimagined versions of the original games. It just seems like a no brainer to me. Otherwise it’s just 50 year old games on a better hardware. Bordering on pointless.
With extra lag and glitches because it uses emulation software to make it work on modern hardware. They could've used FPGA hardware which mimics original hardware and plays exactly like the original would, but you'd have to buy the Collector Vision Pheonix which is an FPGA Coleco Vision with Atari 2600 support if you want any classic Atari support in perfect FPGA hardware recreation. The Analogue Pocket FPGA handheld and Mister FPGA Console can also do it perfectly. Mind you the Analogue Pocket comes with a Portable HD screen, 6 button controller and can play all the 8-bit and 16-bit consoles for just $220. I bought a Sega Genesis emulation console with 50 games, two controllers for merely $70. This comes with 1 game and 1 controller but still asks for $130
I really want to see this for the Atari 5200 because that thing has the worst controllers on planet earth and there are no widespread cheap replacements
@@Boswd You can, but it just pulls the rom and plays it in an emulator. So you aren't really playing the cart. People want an FPGA console that would actually play the carts not through software emulation.
It’s hilarious seeing the difference in tone between this video and Hancock’s. I agree with you guys, though. It’s a re-shell of the 2600+ for all intents and purposes. I had originally pre-ordered that, but canceled after I got the details on hardware and compatibility. Give me FPGA that can handle all of the 2600, 5200 and 7800 games and I’m in.
Why it wasn't an fpga console? Because, it's cheaper to produce and a lot less effort to release this cheap emulation box than put a little effort to release an fpga console and at the end of the day they can overprice this and still sell it.
Oh my goodness did you hear Ford came out with Bronco and the Bronco Sport. How dare they. They don't care.. the iPhone has multiple models how dare they. They don't care.... I think it's pretty smart you can choose do you want it in an 2600 shell or a 7800 shell.. this a beetch session just for the sake of beetching .... If Nintendo did this you two would be carrying on how brilliant they are.. you know like having 3 versions of the same switch with basically the same guts beyond the screen... Smh
The Atari 7800+ is a cash grab. If it wasn't, then Atari would had announced it around the release of the Atari 2600+ (which plays both 2600 and 7800 games. There's already 5 Atari consoles including this on the market. I would had brought it, if it was FPGA. I'm not buying an emulation system that might be incompatible with 10% of the library, and wait for an "update" to fix the problems (like the 2600+) This is Prime-1 signing out.......
The bare minimum expectation of any console re-creation is that it should be able to do exactly what the original hardware can do. In this case, it doesn’t play some games and is incapable of using some hardware but even more importantly, is that despite it being a retro game console, it doesn’t cater to retro enthusiasts by its omission of basic A/V output for use on CRTs. It’s not whining if it’s creating problems instead of fixing them. And if you can’t do a 1:1 swap with the original hardware, why is that considered acceptable? Why is the norm these days lowered expectations and ultimately a less functional machine as a direct result of someone else not caring as much? In that regard, it’s completely inexcusable. Overall, the package is nice and will probably cater to the majority of the original user base since most probably own original modded 7800s already. But if you’re going to spend the amount of money they have on casing alone, why not do it right to begin with, make it an FPGA hardware level device so that it can actually play games like Rikki and Vikki as well as the other 2600/7800 games that currently can’t work as a result of it being a rom dumping emulator, and truly make the ultimate 7800 replacement that would make 99% of the end consumers happy? The excuses that FPGA is too expensive when you have bedroom hobbyists and developers doing these very things is more revealing than all else.
That would require supporting analog and digital controllers. 2600/7800 had the same DB9 digital ports, so easier to support. Analog controllers would require a redesign of brand new controllers, which would be a significant cost. Remaking the old controllers would have been a bad idea.
@OM19_MO79 seems funny to make a thing in the 7800+ that does exactly the same thing the 2600+ did (playing 2600 and 7800 cartridges) except for changing what controller one wants to use instead

I picked it up as I don’t have the 2600+ and my composite modded 7800 doesn’t work great through my retrotink 5x. I agree though let’s go Analogue! After the 64 of course….
I'd buy it if it came with a dual stick Robotron controller...
You can buy a dual stick robotron controller for the 7800 over at retro game boyz.
@@KrunchyTheClown78 AtariAge has a nice dual arcade stick too but its out of my price range...
As someone who has the original consoles but also desires wireless controllers where possible, I do like that they are released DB-9 adapters for the wireless controllers. I did purchase those to keep my classic consoles up to par with my other consoles with wireless controllers.
My actual 7800 is a little worse for wear so this could well be my next console
I’m actually do want to get a 7800+. I had a 2600 but my parents couldn’t afford to get neither a colecovision nor a 7800. I just hope I could find games for it in a vintage video game store.
This is for Atari fans, if you don’t like it, don’t even share this on your podcast; the guy with glasses always bitches about everything!, I bet he does not even play videogames….😅
Go find a hobby that doesn't involve you trolling.
The ad for the trash product ends at 1:30.
Well at least you get 30 games with the NES mini.
How many does the 7800+ that costs $50 more than the NES mini come with???
Obviously I want an FPGA console, but I love the Atari 7800, so I'm getting one.
I wonder how well these retro releases are doing for Atari. When I worked retail still we would sell any of their games very rarely.
Are these pants stretchy enough to fit an Atari 5200 down the front?
I already own the real Atari 7800 console And Atari 2600+ is pretty good system whatever my collection of games works but yeah, I don't know why this?
The Colecovision/Intellivision/5200 controllers all used a number pad. If Analogue was going to make an FPGA console, it would have controllers with number pads and compatibility with these three systems. I think the retro community would lose it's collective mind and buy them up fast. Aside from that, a 2600/7800 FPGA console by Analogue would be :fire:
12"02 To Me The 5200 is Prime To Be Re Released But Needs to be Way lighter and maybe tads Smaller too , plus With Better Controllers too.
I totally agree with that guy saying that the atari 7800+ is the same console as the atari 2600+ and what not, because it is.
If i was atari why not coming up with a 5200+ wich could play both atari 400 and 5290 cartrides trough an extra slot, because i willconsider that to be something different rather then keeping stuck with their 2600 line up of editions of it😟😟
can you use other wireless controlers
the 7800 was sank by the Crash.
although Atari did produce Trak-Balls for 5200 & VCS/7800;
they failled to port CRYSTAL CASTLES for the later systems !
an "Arcade" version, packaged with Trak-Ball would have been a hit !
Loving Ian's shirt. "Eat bugs."
I’m not really big into Atari (lil before my time, first console I grew up with was the NES and then A Genesis+SNES) I did find my dads 2600 only 1 problem I can’t play it as of right now because it’s got the fork tv connectors (pre-coaxial) I am not gonna go out my way to get the adapter needed when I will probably play for few mins !!!
can the new 7800 play 5200 games?
I miss the voicemail message Q&A!
Only way I would think of buying this if 2600 and 7800 games were in it
No Offense , In this Cast , Pats Face Looks Allergic to Something ? , Swollen or Wider.
Looks fun. I might get it. *shrugs shoulders
It was a little hard to focus on the Atari news because all I could think about was you two in stretch pants.
Sorry
Atari 2600, Atari 5200, Atari 7800 was how these were originally released right? So what are they doing?
I just want the vcs with a cart slot
The fact it isn't compatible with 5200, Am I the only one disappointed?
I only have a dozen 7800 games and don’t have any interest in the remaining 46 games for it, but I must buy Bentley Bear, Berserk, and Frenzy.
It’s just a remake of a shit console, what more do people expect?
I had the 7800 as a kid so when I saw this I was interested because I thought it would come with a 7800 multicast like the 2600+ did. When I saw that it only comes with Crystal Quest I lost a lot of interest and when I looked up the current price of 7800 games I completely lost interest. Pole Position 2 was not bad at $16 but most of the other games I had were $30+.
Hate those lame-ass emulation machines that dump a rom from the cartridge.
Don't care for the extra features not even wireless controllers and HDMI output. Just make real hardware and I'm buying.
Agreed. FPGA is the way to go for repro classic Atari consoles, those systems deserve that much.
That controller looks so incredibly uncomfortable
My hat size is a whopping 7 3/4, but I think these guys got me beat
But The Atari 2600 plus Can That Play The 7800 Games though ?
"People are gonna buy it anyway." Other people probably will. I won't be among them.
Why the hate for this???
Because it's basically the 2600+ with wireless controller support and Bentley Bear included being called the 7800+.
Atari should've used FPGA hardware to give full compatibility, perfect gameplay and perfect sound.
Because it’s Pat and Ian
Im a Gen-Xer. I don't understand the point of all these Atari's. I ADMIT I'm out of the loop on technology and all these plug-n-play thingies. My knowledge goes no further than a box TV and my 16-Sega Genesis. But WHY NOT just buy an original Atari 2600. They're still affordable and work great. My Atari 2600 JR from 1986 works perfectly first try every time. As retro collecter this makes no sense to me.
The games are cool at least.
I hope it's a success. So Nintendo can re-release the original NES.
I might be the original "7800 fanboy" since it was a CIB set I completed back in the early 2000s... and I didn't buy this. It's the 2600+ in a new shell, and given how long it takes to dump a 7800 game before it loads on the 2600+'s emulator... forget it.
For cartridge fetishists only.
all 3 of them in the world
Why
I pay a subscription to avoid ads on TH-cam and you all sneak in your own ads? 😂
Not fixing the crappy ass sound chip - NO GO.
I still have my original 2600.. and atari bunder that holds like 12games.. but i feel no reason to purchase this..its cool but nah
When did Ian get a haircut? Lol
1:45
I'm buying.
Maybe...
3:57 Dipswitched ?
Little physical switches on the cart to select the game (or game parameters), instead of through a menu
This comes with 1 game and 1 controller but still asks for $130
So you're saying it sucks...
I really want to see this for the Atari 5200 because that thing has the worst controllers on planet earth and there are no widespread cheap replacements
Continuing to make Amico Holdings LLC look like fools. That's what Atari is doing.
If this was FPGA and I could play real carts I would probably be all over it.
you can't play real carts on this? are you sure about that?
@@Boswd You can, but it just pulls the rom and plays it in an emulator. So you aren't really playing the cart. People want an FPGA console that would actually play the carts not through software emulation.
You should get Jersey Boy tatted across your belly Pat. We want to see you be the coolest 50 year old on your block love you
It must suck being like one of the 12 people that they keep milking with this stuff.
I don't care. I got one on the way.
Jesus pat shilling jeans lol
I'm done with all this Atari crap. Give me the Vectrex+
Is the 7800 iconic? 😂😂
Yep it is bro
Oh my goodness did you hear Ford came out with Bronco and the Bronco Sport. How dare they. They don't care.. the iPhone has multiple models how dare they. They don't care.... I think it's pretty smart you can choose do you want it in an 2600 shell or a 7800 shell.. this a beetch session just for the sake of beetching .... If Nintendo did this you two would be carrying on how brilliant they are.. you know like having 3 versions of the same switch with basically the same guts beyond the screen... Smh
Is that Pat? Yikes.
IOW Me repeat what Pat say thats how me make descision
The excuses that FPGA is too expensive when you have bedroom hobbyists and developers doing these very things is more revealing than all else.
why not just a console that plays 2600/5200/7600 as a +
That would require supporting analog and digital controllers.
You fell off
Cant use trackballs with atari + . composite mod real hardware better . retrobros nes style controllers for atari are near perfect . I have no desire for hdmi stretched look atari games. not buying . hard pass again
And in typical Past fashion he doesn't do any research. THEY DID PUT OUT A DONGLE FOR WIRELESS 2600 PLUS . he does this all the time skims does no research and makes his bs claims
