As someone who was heard of but missed out on the 7800, I do believe now is the time for a redemption arc. I’m personally excited for the Atari 7800+, and new games like Bentley Bear’s Crystal Quest! Atari has really been listening to what it is customers want, and they are delivering tenfold! Part of me wants to see an Atari Lynx+ with a significantly smaller form-factor, compatibility with games and much better battery life (rechargeable and lasts more than 3-5 hours)-if possible.
I wish I had saved my cartridges now. I only kept one. I kept it as a decoration which was my favorite 2600 Game: Adventure. When I look at the cartridge it brings me back memories of another time and a childhood friend. I will buy the 7800+ just breathe life into that old Adventure cartridge once again. Also, gotta get Berzerk, the 7800 version of course. "Intruder Alert, Intruder Alert"
Would be nice to see versions of Atari arcade games. I especially would like to see the Tengen NES games Gauntlet and Tetris. Finally putting old Sega arcade games on it would be nice too.
I like how he kept on dodging the question “how is this different from the 2600+” The answer, technically, it’s exactly the same. The only difference is a different case and controller.
Supposedly it will ship with a better firmware and have a better cart slot. The 2600+ will get this firmware later. I own the 2600+ and I think its very cool looking but doesn't have any functionality over the 2600+. Its more for the look, I never owned a 7800+
I've heard it handles paddles a bit better - not sure. Paddle games work fine on the 2600+ but some have said Kaboom and Super Breakout could be improved so maybe that's addressed.
I have a THE VIC-20 and fully recognize it's mostly the same as the THE C64 MAXI, but you couldn't get the Maxi for a reasonable price at that point and it was limited. Given how much people pay for the XP Butcher Billy boxart, a whole new case -- and for original 7800 owners (or 2600 Jr fans) the option is pretty nice. Also, there are several 7800 new game releases tied to it. Since I missed the 2600+ launch and exclusive stuff now sold out entirely, I'm here for the 7800.
I'd rather play your atari 7800 over anything on Playstation or x box. The fun factor is there! X box and Playstation games are more like stupid movies with dumb controllers. I wish SEGA would learn from you guys. Awesome video and thanks for the info boys
Thanks so much for the kind words! The Atari 7800 definitely has that pure, fun factor that so many of us love about retro gaming. It’s great to see people still appreciating that style of gameplay over modern consoles. And yeah, if SEGA ever jumps back in with something similar, it’d be amazing! Glad you enjoyed the video-we really appreciate your support! ❤️
Haha, I feel your passion! A modern 5200 would definitely be awesome, but no word from Atari on that front yet. Fingers crossed they consider it in the future!
The one negative thing is this would explode the 5200 collector's market. Since the 2600+, prices of 7800 games have jumped $30 on average because it was a niche system, and now there is sudden demand for the games without increasing the supply. If Atari were to make a 5200+ they would also have to accompany it with re-releases of its games. The problem is that the most expensive 5200 games are the third party titles. A 5200+ would make those Activision games $200 or more.
@@SatoshiMatrix1 I have a 5200 with a multicart (think I payed about $50 for it years ago) that has every 5200 game plus unreleased games for it. So I doubt the prices would jump that much. Unless you are some collector that gets off on having a bunch of cartridges vs. one multicart, it wont hamper you from playing the entire library relatively cheap.
Thanks for pointing that out! The regional differences in controllers are always interesting to learn about. The two-button controller pad in Australia must have given players a slightly different experience compared to the joystick.
Some modern retro systems, like the Evercade, already offer features like these, which add a lot of flexibility for gaming collections. Hopefully, Atari considers adding these features in future iterations!
It's weird because I find having 500 games on an SD card less appealing than being forced to enjoy a single cartridge I've inserted. I don't jump from game to game for obvious reasons and find myself extracting more enjoyment from each title.
The 400 Mini is the XE Plus you're looking for. Terrible marketing choices really hurt that device. It's the 400, 800, 800XL and 130XE all in one. And while it plays 5200 games, it's a poor implementation of the analog controllers, so hopefully something better will come along soon. The dude in the video really undersold the 400 Mini. You're getting full 8-bit computers with that one if you know even a little bit of what you're doing.
@@mortimore4030Especially if it has a built-in SIO2USB interface. I would love a real SIO port on one of these recreations so I can hook up all my peripherals. I have a few pieces of software that use the extra 64k of the 130XE, but I really like the feel of the 800XL keyboard.
Okay I was just thinking, what if Atari did a Jaguar+? Here's my idea: #1. A modern take on the Jaguar Pro Controlled with a touch screen instead of the keypad, with new releases shipping with overlays to support the original controllers and built-incpde t dosplay the overlays on the touch screen.
That’s actually a brilliant idea! A Jaguar+ with a modern Pro Controller and touchscreen could bring back the old overlays while combining nostalgia with new features. Atari could really appeal to both the retro and modern communities with that. It would also be exciting to see if they’d polish up some classic games and release new titles.
The Atari 7800+ is compatible with cartridges for the Atari 2600 and 7800 consoles, meaning it plays both types of these classic games. However, it does not support Atari 800 or other 8-bit computer cartridges.
I have an original European 7800 with the excellent pads but the RF connection is horrendous even on a CRT - this will be a great console with a solid steady image. :) The Euro 7800 has Asteroids built in so it's a shame that hasn't carried over as it's a brilliant port.
I'd like to know if they were able to fix the problems with the Driving Controller & the Video Touch Pad. We also have problems getting "Star Wars: Death Star Battle" to work on the 2600+. Will it work on the new unit? Thanks.
It seems there are still issues with the Driving Controller and Video Touch Pad on the 2600+ and 7800+-neither works properly yet, but future firmware updates might resolve this. As for Star Wars: Death Star Battle, there's no confirmation about its compatibility with the 7800+, but it's worth checking Atari's compatibility updates
Yes, the Atari 7800+ is compatible with Sega Genesis controllers, but only with restrictions. For games that require two buttons, a Genesis controller will not work directly as the buttons are not mapped correctly. This is where the Seagull 78 adapter comes into play: With this adapter you can use a Sega Genesis controller and use both buttons for Atari 7800 games that support this. Without this adapter, the Genesis controller only works to a limited extent for one-button games
Does anyone know if this console connects via standard AV (it mentioned 4:3 compatibility online). I want to use this to replace my 7800 on my main living room CRT television, but the information about anything other than HDMI is inconclusive
The Atari 7800+ console does not offer a composite AV output; it is designed primarily for HDMI connectivity to modern televisions. While it supports both Atari 2600 and 7800 cartridges and includes a wireless CX78+ controller, it lacks composite output natively. Therefore, connecting it directly to a CRT without HDMI support would require a separate HDMI to composite converter.
I totally get your concern! Input lag can definitely be an issue with wireless controllers, especially when it comes to fast-paced retro games where timing is everything 😱
Yes, the Atari 7800+ should work with all 2600 cartridges, including Zaxxon and Pitfall II. However, Pitfall II has a unique audio chip (DPC) for enhanced sound, which may affect compatibility. Check Atari’s official list for specifics.
@@retrogamingcrew Thanks for clarifying! I know these two didn't work on the 2600+ (or the Retron 77) but if they work on this one, that would be great!
