1970 Dodge Coronet “Super Bee” by MPC - Episode 48

- Today on the WorkBench I’m building the 1970 Dodge Coronet “Super Bee” by MPC. This particular kit went together really easy and had almost zero flash right out of the box. The only thing about this entire kit that I was a little disappointed about was the lack of different wheels. The ones that were in the kit are nice but I think that a five spoke mag wheel would have looked more period specific.

Awesome build! Just a heads up for future builds. Chrysler products of that era had the whole engine bay painted the body color.
Thanks for that information. Often times I go with all flat black under the hood. The research photos that I looked up had black in the places that I have it. It's difficult to find actual factory photos of the engine compartments and how they were "Decorated". Most of the available pictures can be incorrect due to poor restoration attempts and unfortunately, I think that is what I found.

@@scaleautoguysworkbench Ah, yes, some paint jobs go on so nice and easy it's ridiculous... Then others, not so much. 🤣 The worst is the ones that go completely wrong at the very end. I built a Crown Vic that's paint went on perfect, started drying perfect, then crackled in an instant as soon as I put it under the heat.
The "Christine" 58 Plymouth ended up being painted like four times because of stupidity and clear coat.Paint combination that I had used before (same primer, paint and clear ) Had worked on previous builds but for some reason the clear destroyed the paint job. I switched up the clear to a different brand and had the same result. I finally just went with the Future as a last resort and it came out great. Two tone paint jobs are enough work and to have to do them over again is a royal pain. That build went back into the box for like six weeks before I finally pulled it back out and and finished it.
Nice build Kevin! I had the same issue with the decals on mine. Very frustrating. I wasn't able to save mine so I had to strip it and try again. Thanks for the video, fun to watch!
Thank You! It is an older kit so I was lucky that they went on without total disintegration. Sorry to hear that you had to strip it and start over. That's one of the worst feelings in the world especially if you go the paint perfect and something silly messes it up. Thanks for watching!
I really like the color you chose. This is totally random but it’s such a relief after you assemble your chassis and all 4 wheels sit level Lol. That’s a nice clean build.
Thank you! I initially chose Folk Art Ice Blue for this kit but I had a ton of trouble getting the paint to lay down smoothly. So, I went with the backup color... I totally agree with you on the four wheels sitting level. I have found that most times the older kits have less problems than the kits that are currently being produced. It's like quality control has been thrown out the window for the cause of saving a few more dollars. Thanks for the great comment!

Thank You! It wasn't the first color of choice, Ice Blue was. The first thing I thought of when I picked up the bottle was how nice it would look on a Mopar build. That color gave me fits, I couldn't get it to lay down smooth. I don't blame the paint per se. On the night that I bought the Ice Blue I also bought this Peacock Pearl. After stripping the Ice Blue off twice I decided to shoot the Peacock and it went down smooth as silk but a little light. After a couple of coats it really took off. Thanks for watching!

It took me a while to decide on a color with this one. I tried an Ice Blue but the paint was uncooperative and refused to go down smoothly. After three attempts I switched over to this color. It's not what I wanted initially, but it did turn out nicely. The Charcoal Gray with the black decals is also a color I had floated in my brain when trying to decide, as well as Hemi Orange and that colorshift green paint that I used on the Hot Wheels Camaro build that I did not long ago. Sometimes I look at the box art until it screams ( not literally ) what color it wants to be. Sounds crazy, I know, but sometimes that how I get my inspiration for a build. Thanks for watching!

4 shifters ... i just opened this kit and had to look up a vid cause i was confused on all the pieces ...the engine have excellent detail both side on the hemi heads are detailed
For this being an MPC kit it surely didn't lack in the detail department. I did mess up the underhood paint job but other than that it turned out pretty well. This kit really does have a lot of potential to be almost anything that you can imagine. Thanks for watching!

AMT bought MPC is what I've heard for years, both brands still exist but under one umbrella. (kind of like Ford is a company name and also used as a brand of auto, along with Lincoln which Ford purchased and absorbed years ago) I think AMT wants to move that brand upscale on new tooling they use. MPC will probably be on older tooling re-releases.
It wasn't until I finished with the painting of the interior that I realized that one dash had the brake and clutch pedal attached and the other did not. This kit has had many different iterations between basically stock to full on tubbed rears and huge slicks and a blown engine. MPC omitted some of the racing parts and not others. I think that's where the different dashes come into play. Thanks for watching!
Kitbash in a box kit. 70s MPC body and interior bucket with the chassis and engine from an late 80s AMT roadrunner / gtx .
Thats why you need to grind/cut on the windshield to make the two kits fit at the cowl area.
Youd be surprised at how well the chassis from the mpc 69 daytona/ general lee / country charger kits fit in that mpc 70 coronet body.
It was a little confusing for like a minute when I pulled all of those extra parts out of the box but I figured that it was like most kits with it being a one kit fits all boxes with added or subtracted parts to fit the box art. This one was just a bit unusual in having to remove a part of the windshield before installation. As far as the chassis goes, I wouldn't be to surprised about it fitting into other kits as the 1:1 cars share similar underpinnings amongst themselves, why shouldn't the 1/24 cars... Still, it's nice to know that they are interchangeable.
The extra parts in that box, Go to the 70 dodge coronet pro street kit that AMT had out I think it had the purple coronet car on the box top, You have notice it has 2 dash boards, a set of deep dish mags, & 2 motors. The coronet pro-street kit was a great kit also came with 2 M/T pro street wide tires that are not in your kit.
Now that you have mentioned it, I do recall seeing the Pro-Street version some years back and it kind of connects the dots for me. As is often the case in the model kit world, build one mold, do some minor switching of available parts, throw it into a few different boxes and have multiple versions available to offer to the masses. Recently, I broke out my really old Revell 70 Torino Cobra kit and was kind of laughing when I seen that the parts trees between this old kit and the just recently released version were identical. The only differences between them was the box art and the decal sheet. To be honest, I like the new release kits decal sheet better than the one that came in my old kit.

@@Bruces-Eclectic-World I don't do the Ebay auctions anymore. There's always that guy that swoops in at the last minute and steals your dreams away. So, when I'm on there I look at the "Buy it now" options and try to get the best price. Way back when I was a seller on Ebay it was fun to watch the progress of the sales but not so much now. I have looked at both of the shops that you have mentioned and have purchased a few things from each of them. They are both fair on their pricing and have good customer service.

One little mistake, the firewall was body color on all Mopar in the '60 and '70 ... No big deal !

I bought this kit a while back. Your Peacock color looks good, and I'd use it too, if I didn't already have a firm color choice. Because the first 1:1 I saw of the '70 Super Bee being unloaded from the transporter at my local Mopar dealer was Hemi Orange, when I get around to it, my kit will be orange.
Alignment of the bumper/grille assembly is supposed to be flush with the top of the fenders and hood. Is there a problem you found that prevents that? It looks like it sits too low, exposing the flat vertical surface on front of fenders. I will need to work up some way to make it fit, if you found an obstruction.
I remember the first time that I had ever seen one of these cars. It was a neighbor of my high school buddy that had one. I don't know the technical name of the color, but it was a light blue with a black vinyl top and black stripes like the ones that I used. I never talked with the guy that owned it so I don't have any specs on the car. I just remember staring at it everytime I went by his house. AS far as the hood issue... that's just the way that it's molded. I imagine if I would have ground down the center section of the hood where it sits between the bumper/grille area it would fit a bit tighter. There isn't much as far as material that can be removed before you begin to affect the trim at the bottom of hood. Maybe this and a combination of removing some material from the backside of the bumper assembly might give enough clearance for the hood to sit flush. The chrome part and the painted part of the bumper is all one piece so if you're up to doing this it would have to be a careful balance so that you don't disrupt the look.
@@scaleautoguysworkbench I noticed the character line that sweeps upward in front of the wheel opening. That sweep is supposed to carry on along the bottom edge of the chrome bumper, I think. On your build, the bumper looks low there. That's why I asked the question, because maybe the underbody sub-frame doesn't fit to the body correctly, and it throws the bumper out of proper location. And then that obstacle makes the top side of bumper/grille go out of alignment to top of fenders, too. I don't know yet how all that fits together, I haven't opened the box for my kit.
You reduce de clear
I reduced the clear using the Tamiya X20A thinner. I don't remember the ratio off the top of my head as this was done quite a while back. I just remember that I wasn't overly impressed with the results after having spent the money for the Tamiya products. It wasn't any glossier than any of the other clear coats that I have used in recent history. So in my mind it is not worth the added expenditure and the time to drive further to get it.
Id love to find that kit...

Thank You! If you look on Ebay they have this exact kit and other re-issues of it currently available ranging between $30 to $50. This build started in a totally different paint scheme and then evolved as it went on. Initially it was going to be Ice Blue exterior with a somewhat matching two-tone blue interior. Do to issues with the paint, the Ice Blue was changed to the Peacock Pearl and the colors that I chose for the interior looked awful together. So, I went with black on black. I mix up the interior colors on my builds. Sometimes they're black, or they may be tan or two-tone. It depends on the car and how I feel when it comes time to pick out the colors that I want to use. My two previous builds were Almond and two-tone blue and white. The paint that I used was shiny when dry, but I wanted to kick it up a bit so I added the clear. Thanks for watching!
