  • A case study in how to drive a Mopar purist absolutely insane
Our bud Dr. Art @drartshotrodrehab was thinking about adding a Mopar B Body to his fleet when this 68 Coronet caught his attention at a local classic car dealer.
He went to look the car over, and recorded what he found on his phone for us to look over
What we saw was one of the most cringeworthy examples of flipper hackery we've ever seen!
Here's a rundown of all the things we can spot wrong with it without even looking at the car in person.
It's a pretty impressive list that basically includes everything!

Tony explains with unmistakable clarity that his criticisms are based on the reality that this car is a low-quality clone precisely because it doesn't accurately recreate the features of the car it's attempting to clone. How is that controversial?

This is not so much a clone, or a tribute: It's a specious car. It doesn't even do a good job PRETENDING to be what it's purported to be. You'll be the laughingstock of any Mopar meet up; and for the money the dealer is asking you can actually buy a GOOD car.

This car is the poster child to what has ruined the hobby. I have never been a guy with much money. But I used to have so much fun buying, playing with for a few months. Then selling for a few bucks more. My late 60s early 70s cars. Jeez. I almost bought from a buddy of mine. A running in nice survivor condition 68 Bee. He wanted $3800. And it was REAL. It was also 1993.
Now. The prices are so jacked up. Total garbage that should be just parts cars are going for 10s of thousands of dollars. I can't even get back into playing with the old cars. Because of this. I miss it so much.
I am so glad that these videos are getting made. It's a service that needs to be done. We need these auctions houses and dealers out of business, and it is brought back to the guys in their garages. Just having fun with their buddies. But that will never be. The zero-60 times on a pentastar are less than 6 seconds with a chip, cold air intake and BBK throttle body. Only a few of the oem 60s & 70s muscle cars could do a sub 6 second 0-60. Pentastar is a damn good engine - better in fact than the 350, 377 and 392 Chrysler hemi designs because they don't have the windage oil starvation problem destroying cams and lifters. The Super Bee had a 426 with a Holly 750 double pumper, and you could watch the fuel gauge go down accelerating up hills! Gas was about $1.10/gal. Damn, I'm old.

Buyer Beware are the two words you need to keep in the forefront of your mind when looking to purchase a car like this. There are way too many unscrupulous people out there willing to part you from your money, particular when it comes to cars. If you don't know much about cars find someone who does, particularly about the brand and model you're looking to buy. Go to the car meets and talk to the owners of the cars. Tell them you're looking at buying and want some advice. They'll be more than willing to help you or point to who can. Like you Tony I'm a Mopar fanatic and have been since I was 12 yrs old. I've built several clones and sold them as such but they were done right. The Mopar clan is a very tight snd protective group and won't steer anyone wrong looking for help. Without knowing the structural integrity I wouldn’t call this a flipper car just because this is exactly how my cougar is built besides the wrong engine call out. I built my car to be cool so I’ll paint it whatever color I want, do the interior on a budget, put 70 eliminator stripes on a 69, put in pinto bucket seats, delete chrome that I can’t afford, and add the entire eliminator body kit. I’m sure a dealer selling my car would call it a eliminator clone. Other than the wrong engine call out, I really don’t see anything wrong with the car unless the price was equivalent to a nice accurate clone/being represented as such (edit just saw the end of the video price is insane). I doubt a flipper would manual swap it so I think this was just someone’s hot rod. Fun bright color, cool hood, stripes, bucket seats and a 4 speed, sounds like a great car to me

Sure people do that for themselves. That's a bit different than trying to pass a car off as something it isn't and do a piss poor job at it, to sell to some unsuspecting person- which is the whole point of this video. More likely it was cobbled together with what they could find... and find cheaply. If you weren't really in the know and somebody sold you a Charger Daytona, that was a 72 with a slant six in it- you'd be mad.
I'd have more respect for the flipper if instead of trying to pass it off as what it ain't, he made it some fake ass satire trim. Or just sold it as a 318 Coronet. If I bought that car for the 6k it should be selling for; that's what I would do. Pull the 383 and bee badges off, and call it the 318 Jammer or something, with a fake funny backstory.

Thanks Uncle Tony. I too have a mixed up Mopar. I bought this 1970 Dodge Challenger 318 and. 904 trans. 7 1/4 rear end. From my Sister. It belonged to my Brother in law who passed away due to cancer. Nice car. Brown with a black vinyl top. Column shift. I bought it in 1979. Over the years I have modified it quite a lot. It is now BW7 white. Rallye hood and 17” Rallye wheels all around. 340 modified quite extensively. Headers and air gap intake. Dual exhaust and crime tips. 8 3/4 4:10 gears. Black interior. Console steering column and a ratchet floor shifter. It looks just like Kowalski’s Vanishing point Challenger. Has the R/T emblems all around. I am glad I didn’t add the 440 engine because the 340 gets better gas mileage. I believe it’s 14 or 15 mpg. I know this because I also own a real 1970 GTX. 440-6. And I might get 9 mpg in it😂. I agree that it should always be presented for what it is. I don’t fault the dealership for selling it. I just don’t know why the price is so high for what it is. That is the shady part. No excuse for that. But I take my Challenger to many car cruise ins and most folks don’t know that you cannot get a 340 in a 70 Challenger R/T. So I try to educate them on engine availability for those cars. Thanks and enjoy these hot days while you can.

One thing about relative degrees of 'purism' is, I'll mix and match parts and if I ever have the budget *paint* across models and years, by a little ways at least, but I couldn't *abide* deceptive badging. (If it's not a Superbee, even if it was a more faithful clone, I wouldn't feel right about the Superbee badging. (Also I don't care much for Superbees and garish colors, so I'd rather have a 318 Coronet with a 4-speed in almost whatever color that was born with anyway, or one *i'd* choose. Then maybe hop it up from there. )
(When I put a 4-speed in my Duster it was such a happy bonus that the donor car came with the proper steering column and a near-perfect Tuff Wheel, but I was actually kind of expecting to live with the superfluous Prindl indicator in the interval between buying the donor car and actually going to get it and bring it home.) (And there was a spare Hurst shifter and among the selection of levers in the trunk was the one that would let me shift well with the split bench forwarder than the seller had needed it.)
Anyway, if I were undertaking a project like that, I'd be thankful to consult you, but might not obey. But I really don't like the idea of 'faking a more valuable model.' If it's like, 'I would like a car that looks like that,' I think it's fair game if I'm not *lying* if I make it kinda . :) (And I don't generally want to imitate things by rote anyway.)

You know, I was there back in the day too. And to be honest, I saw my share of oddball cars that came from the factory "wrong". In fact. I actually owned a Ford that was "built" for an employee and had options that technically weren't correct or available. And as the second owner, I knew the original owner and he explained how substitutions were made...mostly by his fellow workers on his "tagged" car. I also saw a couple of "special" cars made for high ranking police officials that were involved in making fleet orders. Some of the mods showed up on the sticker, while some were done "under the table."
I've also seen a couple of real weird "special order cars" that shouldn't have existed and I wouldn't believe if I didn't know the original owners that ordered them.
In one case I recall someone ordered a car with a certain engine, but the car couldn't be built during the model year and the next year that engine wasn't available. After threatening a law suit, mopar built the car as specked out.... with the discontinued engine. I guess they had one left and it fit, so it was built. Whether it ever made the books... who knows. But again I knew the attorney who owned it.
And yes... I still own a one off Plymouth Hemi K wagon. I was there when my dad bought it and I drove it home from the dealership. So you can't tell me it doesn't exist.
Don't assume that everything you find is in the catalogue. There were some Mopars and Fords that were done as one offs for various reasons. But do some research and try and track down the car's history. Also, one offs usually only have one or two idiosyncrasies and they should usually be an unusual combination of off the shelf parts. They shouldn't have anything that didn't actually exist at the time in them.
