Kain would only learn this in the centuries after he refused the sacrifice, learning more about the Scion of Balance thanks to Moebius' time streaming devices to figure out his fate, as well as his eventually learning about the Hylden when he caused the next major paradox by stopping Raziel from entering the Soul Reaver after he ripped through his human self and his brothers to avenge Janos. But even then, Kain didn't know *EVERYTHING* but just hoped to defy the path destiny had alleged for him and for Raziel.
whoever you are thanks for uploading these, this is my favorite game series of all time and imho the best video game series ever made. i'm almost glad it was discontinued tho cause in todays gaming industry i doubt they could ever design another sequel to truly do it justice much less keep the original dark, almost depressing tone each chapter in the series had. simply put: they don't know how to make games like this anymore, which is a shame but true nonetheless. subbed.
i love this series taught me some interesting words. i remember when i heard Raziel say the word Machinations i was like, what? I wish new games gave this much attention to acting and dialogue.
I would love to go back and play these game. Every time I watch a cut scene I realize something new. Like how Kain know it's the Hylden pulling the strings and never tell Raziel until crux comes back to kick him in the balls like a freight train. Or like how the conclusion of Defiance. Puts us right back at the events of where we free Janos from the machine feeding this bio weapon his blood. Or how the Hylden might be totally innocent(Kinda) and justified in wanting to wipe out Nosgoth, due to the elder god.
Steam has thr latter 3 games, and the first two can be found online (I forget how but I've found both a few years back). And I mean legally not pirated.
The hylden are unnamed here. As of now, kain never met them. The events of blood omen 2 where he meets the hylden lord only happen because Kain precented raziel from being absorbed in the reaver. He know a force os working against them, bit he cant pinpoint them since they are outside of the tineline.
I still can't believe that Amy is the same person who was behind LoK's lore *and* a ridiculously cliché interactive movie like Uncharted. Like, either she completely lost her touch, or money really does bad things. Or perhaps both.
What this game doesnt touch on is the decades and possible centuries Kain spent preparing to find out what era Raziel was in while also preparing dramatic introductions.
No, they covered that in the intro cutscene. “Eternity is relentless, Raziel. When I first stole into this chamber, centuries ago, I did not fathom the true power of knowledge. To know the future, Raziel - to see its paths and streams tracing out into the infinite... As a man, I could never have contained such forbidden truths.”
thats the thing raziel has free will outside of time and destiny becuase he's a paradox hes a Soul who wields his own soul from another time bound to him as a weapon this allows raziel to make decision that would normally not be allowed by the "grandfather" paradox theory becuase he is simply put Not supposed to exist and thats why the forces that be did whatever they did to the physical soul reaver to be raziels prison they cannot destroy him and they cannot contain him so he has to be imprisoned Kain is aware of this and that is why he is avoiding confrontation with raziel Yes raziel can kill kain but kain can also be raziels jailor
@supremeo Yep. When you first step out of your crypt in BO1, it's raining, and you take constant damage - the blood fountain saves you from that, but you still can't suffer full submersion.
not even they are sure of it. as raziel puts it in defiance: they are all playing the same game, but all sides are taking claim ot the same pawn. the " they" essentially boils down to all the palyers that have a vested interest in seeing nosgoth Fall: the Elder god and The Hylden.
@@Teixas666 I wouldn't say that the Elder God would want to see Nosgoth fall exactly, he's more of a voracious parasite feeding off of every soul that passes into the afterlife hence why he manipulates events unseen (remember; he's practically invisible to all but a select few such as Raziel for example) calculating all the chances that lives will be lost so he won't go hungry. And if he suspected for one instant that destroying Nosgoth would feed his appetite for souls, he'd do it in an instant. In that regard, he's like Varney/Death from the Netflix Castlevania series where he manipulated everything so that he could feed on the lifeforce of every living being since the dawn of time.
it took my a very long time to make this connection (although i could be dead wrong but hear ya boi out tho) but i like to think this scene is taking place before the events of SR1and this kain is the original one before he throws raziel into the abyss. hes more caring towards raziel and his plight and even tries to divulge info to help him on his quest(not saying SR2 kain isnt but its more evident here during this scene) this would make sense since he has access to mobius's time streaming chamber during this time and would foresee all these events as theyre unfolding, which is why he throws him into the abyss in the first place which he implied in SR 1. ive been playing this series for YEARS and everytime i revisit it, think of and find new details about it, what a fucking masterpiece
I'm pretty sure Kain never loathed raziel. He provoced him to let the events of sr1 unfold, but when that was done, he could finally drop the sharade. When they met at the pillars, Kain didn't say he hated him. He said Raziel can hate him IF he's sincere about it. In Defiance Kain is shocked when Moebius turns out to be his son and immediately tries to pull his sword out. They truly are wanderers on the path of destiny. And I'm sure Kain likes his sweet baby boy (to quote Zephons implications).
@Arkryder 52 no this kain followed him in time because this kain should be already dead. Raziel should have killed him in the past but he decided to spare kain and caused a paradox. That is why this kain never should could see everything happening in the future
Ironically since Kain introduced Raz to the Chronoplast in SR1, as well as his reasonable accuracy[getting to the pillars at the right time, and to meet Raz at the aerie], it now strikes a false chord that Kain didn't just take Raz to and into the Chronoplast to get to and meet Janos maybe years before his death..... Even though it's a game and they wanted you to piss around, Kain saying you must find your own way back through time is a straight lie.
Kain: "Or maybe he merely hoped that it would harden your heart against me, to see this wasteland which I single-handedly authored." Raziel: "That makes no sense, because the state of Nosgoth was worse in the last game."
the reason kain doesnt go up in smoke is explained briefly in SR1 as vampires age they become more resistant to sunlight and water although only instances like rahab actually become immune to it. theres a difference between rain and complete submersion in water. it would be like being hit by the occasional spark compared to jumping into a bonfire
one hand you got the Hylden the other Hand is the Elder God eahc has their own plan and they dont see eye ot eye but it just os happens realizing one's plan happens ot also realize the other, but they dont ally, they just...exist..
actually he did it because he knew who is Raziel, he planned all this before Raziel was raised as a vampire, even when Raziel finds Pillars Kain says that all this was planned and he says that he counted on Raziel anger so that he would follow him into the past.
No he traveled through time. If he waited years (especially millenia) he would transform to a beast like (melchioh, turel etc) due to his corruption Plus Raziel already mentions it at 1:10
@@paimon6286 And always ended being the essence of the Reaver. What differs in this point is only when, because at first he would be consumed right after the killing of his human self, but as of the third paradox (when Kain saved him - because of the second paradox when Raziel spared Kain) it was delayed to that point in Defiance, thus fulfilling the prophecy.
Or it's evidence that it's the same Kain that's been following Raziel throughout time. Hell, he even travels further into the past to meet with him for the climax.
@Joudas Yes, but Kain was still vulnerable to water in Defiance and that Kain must be the same Kain who pulls the Reaver out of Raziel and therefore the same as the one in Defiance! Isn't he?
god damn it do I want a Console HD release of these games, if no other reason but to be able to play these wonderful games again, I got the first one on GOG but it offered no controller support....and these mid era platformers still didn't quite figure out camera and movement controls so a keyboard isn't a great choice.
This scene must have been one of the first to be made. The animations are so silly. With the sliding feet during their rotations. The still idle posing.
This wasn't even recorded on an emulator... this is the native PC version, which has its own host of audio problems. :( It was also 15 years ago, though, so game recording software wasn't exactly top tier.
@@Joudas oh that's crazy, I played it a year or two ago on pcsx2 and I remember having similar music glitches to what it sounds like is in the background where it bugs out and loses half of its instruments
Because Raziel and Kain's destinys are so closely intertwined and ones actions effects the other so drastically that Raziel's story must be told. Raziel also being Kain's first son and "creation", he's such an important part of the story. Similar to how they follow the villian in action movies.
it's incredible how much time pass before Raziel understand than him AND ONLY HIM can see Elder God, the true enemy. He can't imagine that Kain doesn't know who's the enemy cause he was blind.... 'till very end of Defiance
Wow, that... kind of hurts my brain. The ancient vampires worshipped the Elder God and the wheel of fate. The Hylden cursed the ancient vampires with immortality and bloodlust, "releasing" them from the Wheel, causing them to fall from the Elder God's favor, causing their madness and ultimate fall from grace. This was their masterstroke as the ancient vampires damned them to the demon realm with the pillars sealing their tomb.
This should be the Kain that followed the original SR2 timeline - having not saved Raziel from the Reaver and possessing the Soul Reaver; that's my assumption, at least. If it were the younger Kain in this time period, he would be less knowledgeable of past events (in theory; we don't know exactly when he discovers the Chronoplast chamber and its knowledge) and should also look different - more like the BO2 Kain.
Forgive me for resurrecting a 10 year old comment , but I just wanted to say that the Kain that appears here is indeed the same one that Raziel has been chasing from the start. This meeting between the two has never occurred before, since this was the first time in the time loop that Raziel spared Kain, back in William's chapel
@okachoe Elder God (Squid Thing) corrupted the pillars from beneath to drive Kain to kill himself to restore them, thus destroying the vampire race he, EG, hates so much because they're outside the wheel, but the original corruption was caused by Ariel's murder.

@Joudas Hmm, it seems that this is just the same Kain we've seen previously in the game simply travelling in time along with Raziel. "You are persistent, crossing time like this to follow me..." It is never explained how he does it, but most probably Kain just uses the same devices Raziel activates, only a little later.
I'm 18 years late but man it gives me a good chuckle that Kain warns the one guy in the whole world who knows who all the players are that Moebius manipulators haven't revealed themselves to the world, as if Raziel hadn't just had a conversation with the dude not 20 minutes earlier
Psh, with the remakes coming out in two months, you're right on time. Ahead of the curve, even! :) Maybe Soul Reaver will be part of the discourse again by the end of the year.
The "Blood of Ages" if memory serves correctly. Personally, I just took that to mean that his journey had taken some time and he grew naturally stronger and more resilient during it's passage. SR showing that vamps change over time supports this idea as does the fountains' name("Blood of Ages"). Hell, most vamps can even move about in indirect sunlight in SR1 so it could just be a natural resistance gained over time.
I am a little baffled how Raziel does not believe that the Elder is the him and the they are not the true enemy. I mean Kain I understand but Raziel why did he enormously underestimate the Elder god

@@NightWanderer31415have you played blood omen? Kain wasn't all "I don't wanna die", by the end, he'd just been so thoroughly manipulated by mobius, mortaneus and ariel that he hardly saw much worth saving. Plus, he was still corrupted from nuptator. Even in blood omen, kain was never such a simplistic character than that.
Reminder, when Raziel asked Janos why the other Guardians obligation didn't sustain them, Janos had no answer to that.
“I don’t think I have the stomach for it.”
Literally and metaphorically of course.
1:02 Raziel, buddy, I don't think you have a stomach. Period. D:
The tricky part is 'they' are two factions-the hylden and the elder god so while they have an overlap of interests their agendas subtly vary.
Gosh the dialogue is still so pleasant to listen to after all these years
whoever you are thanks for uploading these, this is my favorite game series of all time and imho the best video game series ever made. i'm almost glad it was discontinued tho cause in todays gaming industry i doubt they could ever design another sequel to truly do it justice much less keep the original dark, almost depressing tone each chapter in the series had. simply put: they don't know how to make games like this anymore, which is a shame but true nonetheless.
subbed.
'Every time you turn up, something monumental and terrible happens. I don't think I have the stomach for it.'
Raziel, you don't have a stomach.
i love this series taught me some interesting words. i remember when i heard Raziel say the word Machinations i was like, what? I wish new games gave this much attention to acting and dialogue.
Soul Reaver 2 is the foundation of my vocabulary.
“I don’t think I have the stomach for it”. Well no, you really don’t.
Kain gained immunity to the ill effects of rain in Blood Omen 1, from the first Blood Fountain he drinks from.
@@ryansmith4494or the end scene right before the final fight with kain. They took out some of the speech in the sr2 intro.
I want a game where kain just studies the timeline for like 20 hours. Nothing but lore and history.
0:53 cant unsee Raziel's body turning around 180 before his head does. Doing his best owl impression.
Sheesh i cant believe this video was came out in august of 2006
thats the thing raziel has free will outside of time and destiny becuase he's a paradox hes a Soul who wields his own soul from another time bound to him as a weapon this allows raziel to make decision that would normally not be allowed by the "grandfather" paradox theory becuase he is simply put Not supposed to exist
and thats why the forces that be did whatever they did to the physical soul reaver to be raziels prison they cannot destroy him and they cannot contain him so he has to be imprisoned
Kain is aware of this and that is why he is avoiding confrontation with raziel Yes raziel can kill kain but kain can also be raziels jailor
Do not forget the survey of Crystal Dunamics (they are trying to release a new LOK game)
@supremeo Yep. When you first step out of your crypt in BO1, it's raining, and you take constant damage - the blood fountain saves you from that, but you still can't suffer full submersion.
Amy needs to do writing classes, I would love to construct sentences like this.
*I CAN SEE THE FUTURRRRE!*
indeed yes, i like how the most of the series play out without raziel knowing about the hylden
just as kain is oblivious to the elder god
@pnelad14 Or perhaps it's evidence that Raziel did not kill Kain in the original SR timeline.
"And who is this mysterious 'They' to which we keep referring?"
A question I always find myself asking in conversations like this, thank you, Raziel.
not even they are sure of it.
as raziel puts it in defiance: they are all playing the same game, but all sides are taking claim ot the same pawn.
the " they" essentially boils down to all the palyers that have a vested interest in seeing nosgoth Fall: the Elder god and The Hylden.
Hylden
it took my a very long time to make this connection (although i could be dead wrong but hear ya boi out tho) but i like to think this scene is taking place before the events of SR1and this kain is the original one before he throws raziel into the abyss. hes more caring towards raziel and his plight and even tries to divulge info to help him on his quest(not saying SR2 kain isnt but its more evident here during this scene) this would make sense since he has access to mobius's time streaming chamber during this time and would foresee all these events as theyre unfolding, which is why he throws him into the abyss in the first place which he implied in SR 1. ive been playing this series for YEARS and everytime i revisit it, think of and find new details about it, what a fucking masterpiece
The "No drama this time.." line, out of context reads like dialogue from Frasier
There's something that I'm confused over here. Did Kain just wait all this time for Raziel to appear, or did he time-travel after him?
He travels by using time streaming chambers. That's why Kain hasn't "evolved" since we first saw him in the Soul Reaver intro
@Arkryder 52 no this kain followed him in time because this kain should be already dead. Raziel should have killed him in the past but he decided to spare kain and caused a paradox. That is why this kain never should could see everything happening in the future
Kain abandoned Nosgoth to go time travelling once Raziel's clan had been wiped out.
1:02 after that kain looks at raziel: you speak the truth Raziel you do lack one.
@Joudas Rain, but not standing water? If I recall in Defiance, you are bat-ified soon as you fall into a moat.
Kain:
"Or maybe he merely hoped that it would harden your heart against me, to see this wasteland which I single-handedly authored."
Raziel:
"That makes no sense, because the state of Nosgoth was worse in the last game."
0:55 sounds like someone's boss showing up unexpectedly
Well Kain IS the boss so true ;]
"No drama this time" that is a lie
the reason kain doesnt go up in smoke is explained briefly in SR1 as vampires age they become more resistant to sunlight and water although only instances like rahab actually become immune to it. theres a difference between rain and complete submersion in water. it would be like being hit by the occasional spark compared to jumping into a bonfire
That sounds like a great way for vampires to entertain kids on rainy days, just hold out their arm and have it be a sparkler for a bit :)
The algorithm transported me back in time as well, it seems.
"The ones pulling the strings"... The Hyldens ? The Ancient ? An alliance between them ?
one hand you got the Hylden
the other Hand is the Elder God
eahc has their own plan and they dont see eye ot eye but it just os happens realizing one's plan happens ot also realize the other, but they dont ally, they just...exist..
1:02 hahaha I get it 😂😂😂
I loved playing through that hell, "demon realm" and watching these cutscenes. It was such a reward.
While I love this sceene the fact the Raziels body makes a 180 at 0:53 and his head is dragged along will never stop being funny to me.
This (and its predecessor) were so much fun running for the next bit of lore/story. It's almost the anti-MGS2 of its time.
actually he did it because he knew who is Raziel, he planned all this before Raziel was raised as a vampire, even when Raziel finds Pillars Kain says that all this was planned and he says that he counted on Raziel anger so that he would follow him into the past.
I wonder if Kain really did travel through time to encounter Raziel or if he just waited millennia
No he traveled through time. If he waited years (especially millenia) he would transform to a beast like (melchioh, turel etc) due to his corruption
Plus Raziel already mentions it at 1:10
I wonder if Kain ever meets himself through his time traveling journeys
If he did we'd know.
In LoK, if you came back in time once you always came back.
@@JCRS92 good point. So raziel always killed his human self to become kain's subject ?
@@paimon6286 And always ended being the essence of the Reaver. What differs in this point is only when, because at first he would be consumed right after the killing of his human self, but as of the third paradox (when Kain saved him - because of the second paradox when Raziel spared Kain) it was delayed to that point in Defiance, thus fulfilling the prophecy.
@@JCRS92 such a great story it's a shame we never got to see it's conclusion. It's something we can only speculate.
Isn't he?
Though full immersion in water can still 'kill' him.
Insane to imagine this video is 15 years old
"And who exactly is this diabolical 'they' to which we keep referring?"
Y'know.
They.
god damn it do I want a Console HD release of these games, if no other reason but to be able to play these wonderful games again, I got the first one on GOG but it offered no controller support....and these mid era platformers still didn't quite figure out camera and movement controls so a keyboard isn't a great choice.
This scene must have been one of the first to be made. The animations are so silly. With the sliding feet during their rotations. The still idle posing.
I love that chuckle Kain does 😂👌🏾
true but the latter kinda suits the even more calculating kain that was in 2 and defiance...it is VERY hard to decipher really
@Garrone666 It is ironic indeed, since Raziel has NO stomach.
I love that I can hear the emulator audio glitch where the music breaks when you shift from the spirit realm like 50% of the time
This wasn't even recorded on an emulator... this is the native PC version, which has its own host of audio problems. :(
It was also 15 years ago, though, so game recording software wasn't exactly top tier.
@@Joudas oh that's crazy, I played it a year or two ago on pcsx2 and I remember having similar music glitches to what it sounds like is in the background where it bugs out and loses half of its instruments
@Joudas But there is evidence for him doing so, as we witness time re-shuffling. It could be an illusion but I find it highly unlikely.
And in Defiance, we discover the answer to this question.
I like how the body moves before the head
"You are persistent, crossing time like this to follow me..."
It is never explained how he does it, but most probably Kain just uses the same devices Raziel activates, only a little later.
"i'm biding my time"
it implies he just actually waiting
14 years a go ! 💔
@@Joudas we can only dream
lol when kain said no drama raziel did the cartoon head twitch "whaaaaa?"
That, and all the demons present.
They could move about in the day cus of the smoke stack in turel's territory that was cut from the alpha game originally planned.
Exactly. I don't understand how so anyone can think otherwise...
I just realized raziels VA sounds like hammond a bit
I am a little baffled how Raziel does not believe that the Elder is the him and the they are not the true enemy. I mean Kain I understand but Raziel why did he enormously underestimate the Elder god
20 years and i still have no idea what the hell kain was doing here...
