Good video and the Expanse is a good show.

Connor,
You saw the Templin video on naming your Interstellar government, didn't you?
Another video they should do is one on the Nauvoo/Behemoth/Medina Station. A lot of interesting history on that one station.

The Expanse universe seems like the most grounded and "realistic" type of future space colonisation
It is
You’re not wrong
I'd say For All Mankind is slightly better
The Epstein drive is still magic woo-ha, after all
@@mihailazar2487 To be fair it’s sort of an apples to oranges comparison though. _The Expanse_ takes place just over 300 years in the future where our technology and capacity for interplanetary travel/colonization is likely to be significantly more advanced than it is right now with what we’ve got. On the other hand _For all mankind_ is an alternate history which basically takes place in a fictionalized version of the space race and Cold War era during the 1960s and 1970s (I think) where the farthest they get is the moon, so I guess it’s not really a futuristic type deal?
@@mihailazar2487 there are nuclear fission and fusion powered propulsion concepts which may be able to make something like that possible though. :)
The footage shown when speaking of Basic isn't that of people on basic, but of off the grid people, those who refuse to be registered by the UN government, thus losing access to free housing and everything basically.
While Basic life is described as boring and meaningless, it is in no way a a slum and is in fact way above the average of today's standard.
I was sad about that shortcoming as well. Though for sure there is corruption and greed in the ranks of the UN, in a post Earth society, the UN is by far the best prospect for a government. Chrisjen Avasarala is a prototype model of politician that, in this situation like in the Expanse, balances morals, peace and the needs to achieve them. If I was in the Expanse Uniserve, I would want live under the flag of the UN.
I prefer the MCRN, I like the idea of a culture united by one goal, also they seem more individualistic and I kinda like that
@@alexradke7597 Sadly as we see in later seasons just as prone to corruption.

it would be nice if someone could do a map showing unification of the Earth under the UN in this universe
it would just look like the western united states but if it was the entire world. all the borders would be like squares other then maybe Europe
I believe that UN does not unite the nations of Earth in traditional sense. Each nation have their own system, security forces, and independence. They only give UN mandates to govern outer space, fixing global scale crisis such as climate change, and coordinate international cooperation between nations or blocks.
If i remember correctly at one point in the series they do show one briefly, i think that its just the continents being united or smt like that

Love how this series just seems more realistic for a sci fi. The government system literally an' expanse' of the corruption and conflict earth governments always had ,over resources and boundaries. Our biggest threat here to me is ultimately ourselves. Not the alien protovirus. Even stuff like how things work in space is better explained.
How little things like space debris, radiation can seriously mess up a large hulled ship. Communications issues, gravity, supplies etc, just how hostile living and working in space or travel between places there can be.

The Expanse
Thank you. We need more Expanse videos. I need this show to get a bit bigger so it won't get killed before they are done with the story.
OPA next.
The United Nations Interstellar Protectorate from _Altered Carbon_ should get a video, too.
Never heard of that series before but I approve of this suggestion. More content for this channel is good in my book.
How good is _AC_ compared to _The Expanse_ ? Keep passing by it on Netflix and just can't pull the trigger.
@@ViraL_FootprinT.ex.e They are different in some ways and similar in others. I've only recently started watching the expanse so I have yet to see the full picture, but the societal issues addressed on both shows seem comparable, though they are more of a focus for AC. AC also focus a lot more on the concept of the individual and the meaning of life itself, with less emphasis placed on the greater geopolitical scene of humanity.
I'd say AC is more contained, as in more focused on people, whereas the Expanse seems more broad in its scope. They are both excellent shows imo.
The series is good. I've only read the first book the series that the netflix original series is based on, but it's very close.
@@ViraL_FootprinT.ex.e Really, it's comparing apple to oranges (Bear in mind, I'm comparing the two shows, as I have yet to read either novel series). The Expanse is a narrative driven story which focuses on the geopolitical (or inter-solar political, I suppose) landscape. Where as Altered Carbon is a more character-driven story set in a more distant futuristic setting that explores the potential social and moral changes that new technologies could/would create in society. After all, the thing that serves as the impetus behind the events of the entire latter series is the effects that "Stacks" ( the technology that makes mental uploading a very real possibility in the setting of Altered Carbon) have on human society, especially since it is ubiquitous with humanity by the start of the series.
I still highly recommend that you watch Altered Carbon, if you haven't already. But, don't go into it assuming that it's going to be remotely similar to The Expanse.
The earth economy in The Expanse never made sense to me.

One of the best things about The Expanse was that it eschewed a massive 'history' dump at the beginning and whenever new settings were encountered. Show, don't tell.

The Expanse was a positive surprise indeed. Love that show.
In Sci Fi universes when advance technology is researched does the advancement rate get faster as time progresses like for example the UNSC's Mac Gun would be in like 20 years go from 48 gigatons to like 250 gigatons then 10 years later they get a Mac gun that's like 25 teratons of force?
Like in the real world?
Well... we dont see that in the real world. Not really. Sometimes there are breakthroughs but other areas have huge stagnations. Take tank guns. The abrams has gone from a 105 to a 120 in like.. 30-40 years. If there isnt a need for it we most likely wont see it.
25teraton mac gun? You want to blow up suns or something? With no need for it, its unlikely we'll see it.

25 Teratons as in contained explosive rounds in a certain area like penetrating armor and damaging hulls.
The Forerunner's technology is like a thousand years ahead of the UNSC's.
@@thorshammer7883 Your numbers are off by a huge margin. As calculated the UNSC's ODP's only have a force of 1.3 gigatons of energy. This is goes consistent with both the books and games. Since Covenant shields could be dropped by a 50 megaton nuke. While super carriers shields could be dropped by multiple nukes. Hence why the Covenant used PDCs and why the UNSC had to use sustained mac barrages to kill them.

Are there any insights in how the Earth looks like at the beginning of the Expanse novels? With sea levels rising, the coast are bound to look different. Books mention that the Hague (where the U.N. is placed, whereas in the show it's New York) is totally surrounded by the seawalls, for example. Yet nothing solid is mentioned as far as I know. Living in the Netherlands, I would at least want to know how the rest of the country looks like.

Anyone else think that the history of the UN in the Expanse-verse is- sometimes chillingly - plausible?
We need a Martian Congressional Republic video next or one about the belt/OPA
Ah, I see that they went with the completely original "Colonies good, Terra bad" theme.
It's not that simple. The Martians are a bunch of militaristic jerks. Also, if you don't have a job on Mars, they'll recycle you into compost. Earth has the room and mercy to at least feed you and give you free internet.
I really dislike that trope. It may be because I am from Earth but I have a sentimental attachment towards good old Terra. Anyway Earth is the Homeworld of all humans and any colony that declares independence are a bunch of traitors.
Nnnno, MCRN gets a lot of fanon about it, but in the books it's portrayed as a very iffy state, and the military is basically the government, it's a technocratic ultranationalist state. Also, in the books there is more space to show more of Earth.
Most of it is actually pretty good, and Avesarala talks to Draper about the challenges of feeding a population which insists on growing out of control. Also, the other factions do a lot of propaganda, where they accuse and demean the UN for their economic situation while the UN is propping the accuser's economy up with subsidies, the biggest spaceside industrial complex in the setting, and the capacity for construction of unimaginable scale except for the inadequacies of the rest of the system. Most phones and consumer goods in the entire setting are actually UN built, UN maintained, and run by UN companies. The UN navy even loans berths in it's shipyards to private manufacturing. UN runs medicine, food, and hauling interests. The interplanetary shipping industry is basically run as a natural growth of Earth's own economy.

Well put. What makes the U.N.in The Expanse fascinating is they aren't an Evil Empire. They are a civilization trying to make the best of a bad situation. It's made even clearer in that only a few characters from Earth are truly evil (e.g. Mao).
@C. Caner Telimenli I'm not saying the UN its outright evil, I'm just saying it's somewhat authoritarian. I understand the measures taken to preserve human civilization on Earth, but we have to admit that many of the decisions made by the UN are pretty much assholish. That's all...
