  • Today I share 8 tips for raising a bilingual toddler that have really worked for us so far. Our 26 month old is growing up bilingually with both English and German and it has been working well for us so far with a very chatty little toddler on our hands. I hope it helps others on this bilingual parenting journey and thanks so much for watching!

What tips do you have for raising a bilingual toddler? After making this video I also thought about the fact it's important not to listen to others who suggest it isn't a good idea to raise a child with two languages or even health professionals who tell you your child will have a speech delay. We had this situation when Ben was 12 month and by 2, I would say he is surpassing language milestones in two languages! Getting the right advice is important but so is knowing and trusting your child! I look forward to hearing from you all!

Luckily our health visitor has been really supportive of us raising Olivia bilingual, she was very positive!

@@JessvanDalfsen That's fantastic she's so supportive! I find such mixed opinions (let's not mention my health visitor) and I am just happy I am confident enough not to let it bother me and I know that it's the right thing for us! 😁

Oh I totally agree with this! So many people will have an opinion & will try to do discourage code switching and I think it’s totally fine to code switch! Of course we’re lucky in the Netherlands everyone basically speaks English so she would be understood anywhere but her codeswitching is more the majority words being entered in her minority language (English) but I know as she gets older and language skills get stronger all around, it will become less of a problem 😊 I as an adult code switch sometimes....I also throw German words in sometimes without realizing 🤣

Such a good video! Giving your child opportunities to engage in both cultures definitely helps, as you said. And it's tough, right now, being so far away, and with no local Spanish-speaking or Mexican community at all, and not knowing if it'll be a year or more before we're able to travel 'home'. My husband video calls his parents very regularly, but because my littles still have never met their grandparents in real life...Cyrus is not very motivated to actually stick around and chat. I just need to remind myself--the whole isolation thing is only temporary, and there's nothing I can do about that, so there's no point stressing about it.

I know we are so luckily to be so close to Germany. It really helps as it's just a budget flight or a day's drive down. And absolutely, these are unprecedented times and we are very unlikely to be heading back to Germany again this year when normally we would visit at least 3/4 times a year. I totally agree, don't stress! Ben isn't really interested in video calls at the moment but I know that will change as he gets older too! Thanks so much for watching Rachel!

Ben is so cute! I think it's great that you're teaching him already German. For us is a difficult language and it's much harder to learn it after you grow up. Thanks for the tips :)

It is definitely a difficult language and I am so jealous of how easy it is for him to pick it up! He is pretty much already better at German than I am! 😂

Love this!!! I will be collabing with a mom in Germany on this topic soon. I agree with your tips totally! We do use OPOL but my husband and I speak English to each other in the home (Dutch is both his/the majority language). Building a multi language library with focus on the minority language and keeping consistency is so important! I love that bring up culture and tradition too because that is my biggest worry even more than the actual use of language. Great video!

I loved all of your tips, especially the one on giving them some thinking time. I'm quite impatient as well and that's a good reminder for me, so thanks:)

Love this video! My husband is french and I’m English/Welsh so we have a few languages going on! We’re also sticking to the one parent one language system but I do need to prod my husband mathieu when he forgets 😅 You have such a lovely accent! My wee granny was from Lewis and I spent all my childhood summers there so I have such a soft spot for the Scottish accent ✨ Lovely channel! New sub here, I can’t wait to see more ✨

Yes we do one parent one language and have LOADS of Dutch books compared to English, and yes I'm learning Dutch!!! It's very hard though 😜 x

So amazing you are making the effort to learn Dutch! It is such a brilliant thing to share language as a family and a huge well done! OPOL works well for us and fingers crossed it will continue to! Thanks for watching! ❤️

Hey Pranika! Being a parent really does mean so much worry and I am sending lots of bilingual mummy hugs! All toddlers do develop at their own pace but I think that if you are concerned, you should try to speak with a speech therapist who could assess her. I know everywhere in the world is different but here in the UK, we can do so through our health visitors and they would be able to support both you and her with strategies.
