PERFECT video segments, and great explanations. Great follow up to the podcast about these pickups. I was not able to quite visualize exactly what they looked like, but this really leaves no doubt in my mind. If I ever replace the oil pickup in a Subaru engine - I will get a killer B oil pickup. ABSOLUTELY. Thanks Luke!
Killer bee sump kits are pretty average by design. Not sure who’s actually tested there gear but when running that pick up with spacers in there sump kit the pick up and opening is to close to the floor of the sump. We have done back to back testing and at high rpm there pick up becomes restricted and we start to drop oil pressure we have seen up to 20psi of oil drop over the stock sump and pick up. Amazing what good marketing can sell
More of this kind of stuff please. I'm always very interested in quality non-OEM parts. Any experiences you might have had e.g. brand X was great, brand Y was junk etc. would also be very interesting.

"so these are definitely professional welds that are hand done by a welder that knows what he or she is doing". good job, luke. as a guy who lives in a house full of women, I applaud you.
Thanks for the vid! I want to upgrade both my sump and pick up, dreading doing the swap with the engine still in the car though! I have heard its not a fun or easy job
Agree. That new RCM (Roger Clark Motorsport) Oil Pickup adapter would prevent this though, and for only $30. That is another good option to consider too. But I think this Killer Bee Pickup is the best on the market.
Hi Luke, I am building an ej20x and I purchased an aftermarket Moroso oil pick up tube for it. When installed, the oil entrance side is about 3/8 from the bottom of the oil pan. The oem tube seats 1/4” higher, leaving a bit more space. Will the Moroso tube be too long that it could create cavitation and oil suction issues? I wanted to ask your hydraulics engineer knowledge. Thanks in advance. 👍🏻
I’d call Flatirons Tuning to be sure, but I think it’ll be fine. Also, from a hydraulic engineer standpoint (since you asked, lol), having a tighter gap between the bottom the oil pickup and the oil pan floor actually creates a stronger draw for oil into the tube, which is actually better. One other angle you could take, call KillerB and asked them how close their oil pickups sit from the bottom of the pan - if they say 3/8” then you know you’re totally fine. 👌
The pan and baffle add a lot of cost to the build. If budget wasn’t a concern I’d upgrade them but for now I got a new 2007+ STi pan (about $100) and 2007 STi OEM baffle (about $30), prob about $500 savings over going all Killer Bee parts.
I’m building my engine after I busted a rod bearing. Im upgrading as i go along the build and i purchased an IAG oil pick up.My question ? I’m I able to use a bigger oil pan like the killer bee with the IAG oil pick up.
No. I have one of the moroso ones on my 2004 FXT. But I like the design of this Killer Bee one a bit more. Especially the pickup design that will continue to draw oil even if the pan get crushed up.
@@SubaruONLYI agree yes that does apply for off-road rally and such but for daily drivers and street racing on friendly roads,I save myself 80 bucks with a moroso pick up.. I do have a question for you. I just did a 6-speed swap on my 05 WRX. I'm doing the suber dave custom races to do the basic swap for the rear diff and I just want to find out for sure are the front CV axles for WRX the same as the STI 05 we're connects to the transmission?not the end where it connects to the spindles I know those are different.
I agree. Also, IAG just announced the release of their fully welded oil pickups - and they retail for about $130!! Very high quality and another option that’s quite a bit less than the Killer Bee one. For the STi axles, tbh, I’m not 100% sure, but call Rally Sport Direct as they literally just did this 6-speed swap for their 04 FXT and I bet it’s very similar to this situation.
Hey buddy! I’m actually moving to Rocklin next week!!! But sorry, won’t have a garage for a year or so. Sold my house and renting while the market crashes. Then buying in the Sac area. Cheers!!!
Should be able to swap out with the engine in the car, just need to unbolt the engine mounts and lift the engine as high as possible to get that oil pan off.
YES. I literally picked up my stock 2020 STi today from a $15,200 rebuild. Piston #4 failed because of oil starvation. They denied my warranty because of a Cobb cold-air, but the oil issue caused the failure. I already bought the Killer B parts to install and will do so ASAP.
So this is a common fail on Subaru's.. that's a common fail on Subaru's.. these are also a common fail on Subaru's.. oh and these always fail on Subaru's.. well shit balls.. buy a honda!
The EJ22 out of my 97 legacy had 3 points of contact like the Killer B pickup. Those engines were bullet proof
No kidding. Didn’t know that!! Interesting...those older engines were badass! 👊
That's good to know, as I'm looking into a 97 Legacy 2.2 wagon.
Thanks for the breakdown between the pickups.
Love the design of that KillerB pickup. Looking forward to the install video.
Thanks. Me too. Gonna be real soon!!

Awesome. Now I need to buy one of those new RCM oil pickup adapters and make a video on that sucker!! 🤙
I put one of those on when I did my build the only shame is to hide such a beautiful piece in the oil pan.
Lol 😁😁😁
Does it fit in stock oil pans or do I need to run a killer b pan as well

Ok. Thanks for the feedback!! Will incorporate.
@@SubaruONLY Luke did you make the intro music yourself? Its so cool
Hey thanks!! I wish I could have created that music score but I used a copywriter free track I found out there. I like it too!!! 😁😁
@@SubaruONLY Are you able to steer me into that direction of where to find tracks like that? It's so good

I like your vids, very informative. Just bought an 07 sti, will be doing this upgrade for sure!

Lol, I hear ya. Feel the same about it, but it’s doable. Just got to raise that bitch as far up as possible! Good luck!!!
Thanks for the video Luke! You rock man!
It only takes a minor dent in sump to block factory pickup.

Great Job 🎉 We really appreciate all the details and how you well structure your videos ‼️ It’s very viewer friendly ⭐️📹 Thanks 💯✅ #SubaruOnly
I bought one, and a Killer Bee Baffle too.
Definitely on the list!👍
🤙

Funny shit I just got a rod knock cause mines failed, smfh. Subie be selling people a shit box that you got to build.
Need to aquire this piece!
Yes!!!
Good detail Luke.
👊
Great videos Luke! Are you going with the oil pan and baffle too?
I'm interested in your thoughts on the baffle replacements as well.

Check with IAG to be sure, but you should be able to use a larger aftermarket pan like the Killer B unit. And that would be a good call for sure!
Good vid as always!!
🤙thanks.
Is it ok to go with just the kb oilpickup or is the baffle and pan necessary.
You can use the oil pickup only. 👍
Does the wrx sti 2019 and subaru brz 2018 have this problem please?
Yes.
Was there ever a recall???
Nope! Gotta figure it out on our own.
Did you forget about moroso oil pick up for the WRX?
No. I have one of the moroso ones on my 2004 FXT. But I like the design of this Killer Bee one a bit more. Especially the pickup design that will continue to draw oil even if the pan get crushed up.

Can I bring my EJ20 engine to you for head gaskets and timing belt
I live around Folsom CA

I have a 04 erx that im building and im stuck ive bought two different styles of sti pans and neither will clear the oil pickup any tips?
Hmm. Not sure what the issue is but the oil pan and pick up do need to be a matched set.
174,000 miles on my pickup. No problems
Nice. But it can still happen on any day. Especially if you end up jumping the car!
Oem oil pick up?
@@aldotoledo7113 yes
Will this fit in a oem pan or do I has to buy a killer b oil pan?
Fits the OEM pans too. Get that later deep dish one though. Cheers! 👊
Ok thanks I’m ordering one for my 05 wrx. I bet the old one is going out.
Stop shaking your hands bro.... Good info.
Sorry about that
Is it necessary to remove the engine from the vehicle to remove the sump ? ( 06 Forester XT EJ255 small sump )
Nope!
Should be able to swap out with the engine in the car, just need to unbolt the engine mounts and lift the engine as high as possible to get that oil pan off.
Does it can do non turbo impreza 2.5i motor ?
Yes, works fine for non turbo motors too! 🤙
@@SubaruONLY do u know where I can find it ?
Will these fit in the EJ251?
Yes, I believe that have that one too!!!
Would I still need it in a stock 2020 sti

Does the RA block Sti (2021) also have the same problem? and will this void any warranty?
It does as far as I know. Adding a higher quality pickup should not void the warranty.
