What's good about the rubber flaps is they leak a lot less than trap doors. I just had a conversation with Dave Coleman about this a couple of days ago and he calculated that the leakage associated with your typical metal trap door was the same as a 2" hole! Yeah, I wouldn't worry about those rubber flaps failing. My old E30 M3 had rubber flaps in the oil pan from the factory and they were still like new after many years.

Their short blocks are assembled with oem spec after market parts. I'm not building for power I just want to build a reliable ej255 to start learning the ins and outs of subarus
I also snagged a jdm 6 speed and an I wire conversion kit. I was gonna try to get it all done at once but I think I'm gonna hold off on that for a little while
dont use synthetic oil for break in. use conventional dinosaur oil or break-in oil (high ZDDP content). You can download the subaru factory service manual online with a quick google search. The FSM details engine assembly step by step. get an accurate torque wrench and feeler gauges. follow FSM assembly instructions when torqueing head bolts and installing cams/ cam caps. Measure and set valve lash. Use assembly lube on cams and buckets. Use a good RTV or threebond to seal valve covers per OEM instructions. if you want even more reliability get the subaru JDM 12mm oil pump, AOS, IAG/KillerB pan/ windage tray/ and pick-up.

I think there is a good chance it will. IAG test fitted the pan with all the popular headers they could find before finalizing the design. I suggest giving them a call.
@@motoiq Thanks you guys! Here's what I did. Stock updated style OEM EJ25 pan, with the different profile, that came new from A-zon. Killer-B "Ultra" pick up, new gasket, new tube of sealant, full oil change and filters etc. Old pan came off in my fingers, it was so loose, explaining all the oil leaks. New pan, and pick up went on fine. Had to drop headers and while they were off, filed all the flanges flat(er) to get rid of some of the warping that they'd taken on. Had the car up on stands, UN-bolted engine mounts just enough to get clearance to last four pan bolts, in the back, and 'voila'....done. Also added new windage tray since I was going to be in there anyhow. Side play on the rods seemed OK, w/i spec. Old pan didn't have crazy sludge or shavings...so good news there, but I was petrified of that old type pick up. Car seems much happier now, and runs quieter.
We like the baffles and the windage tray a little better. The Killer B pan is a great part as well though. We used it on the EJ20 stroker motor we did a video of.
I wouldn’t say they have oiling issues and or catastrophic oil system failures sumps could be better but they work same for pickups i believe it was only early ej25 in the 2005 wrx and sti Further more in my experience the oil catch can filling up is due to using the nome baffled breathers which were only intended for pcv system But I do agree with everything you said on how much better iag and killer b pickups and sumps are
The pick ups break in normal street driving on stock cars, and in track use or over 7500 rpm, oil system failures and bearing damage is common mostly due to the pickup sucking air. Oil pump capacity is fine.
@@motoiq forgot to mention I’m from Australia we get Japanese spec motors not usdm so “forged pistons” however still weak yes and I do believe pickup issues were specific to usdm ej257s but lucky for us we don’t see those types of issues to much and the sump there’s 2004-2005 ej207 sumps of the sti that are heavily baffeld already but not all so I stand corrected and was more refuting to what we have here which is mostly stis in Japanese spec
I currently own a Forester a XT outback and a regular outback I've done over 200 head gasket and timing belt jobs on Subarus 45 years worth of foreign car service I know just a little bit !
I have a question: why did you guys choose IAG’s setup for the oil pan, baffle, pickup compared to KillerB’s setup? Not to criticize IAG, but KillerB’s products have been out longer on the market and have been used by many users. I feel like IAG is a little late to the game, though they do offer a very competitive price with the oil combo compared to KillerB’s. Im worried about those rubber flaps in the oil pan being a failure point where it could somehow detach and restrict the oil flow. It seems like it adds to more failure points that could happen within the oiling system. The Cosworth oil baffle has a similar setup with the rubber flaps, and if I remember correctly, a user somewhere on the forums had an issue where some of the rubber flaps had more wear than the others in the baffle. He was afraid that the flaps would detach sooner or later so he removed the Cosworth baffle. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Love the content you guys offer!
We are featuring the Killer B pan in an upcoming video. We like both pans and the rubber flaps are proven in other pans and work better at controlling the oil than metal trap doors. The rubber is a Fluro elastomer and is really oil and heat resistant.
the killer B has too many flaws. I had my heart set on one last year when I had to rip the 207 out of my GF8 but when you look at the benefits of the IAG sump over the Killer B i think it sells itself. O-ring groove to seal it against the block (not RTV crap) plus a threaded hole ready for an oil temp probe. Cooling fins and the sump plug on the bottom face, I don't see how the Killer B has any advantages over the IAG sump. And this is coming from someone who was all in on the Killer B until I looked into it harder.
Just to add, there is a standard baffle plate that just has machined/cast slits in it. I too was worried about the viton flappers breaking off and damaging the engine so thought it best to get the safer option.
Man I wanna buy an STI so bad because of the AWD and Manual trans but damn, seeing all these reliability issues even stock is tough. Corolla it is for now
Until you start to crank up the power much at all. We had one bone stock STI blow up the motor on the dyno doing a baseline run. The ring lands are very weak.

Do the FB engines have the same/similar problems?
so street series IAG oil pan kit vs killer B. Which one do you guys recommend? 🤔
They are very similar.
it`s a great experience watch your videos, always happy, and the mickey mouse hand was great in this video
I currently own a Forester a XT outback and a regular outback I've done over 200 head gasket and timing belt jobs on Subarus 45 years worth of foreign car service I know just a little bit !
Thank you from Jamaica
I put an aftermarket oil pickup on my 08 STI back then traded the car been years wonder if that pickup is still in there probably.
Can you talk about that se-r in the back?
Thanks for the great content.
Man I wanna buy an STI so bad because of the AWD and Manual trans but damn, seeing all these reliability issues even stock is tough. Corolla it is for now
Not true all fear mungering to buy products serviced well they work good
In Australia we have nothing bad to say for standard cars
Until you start to crank up the power much at all. We had one bone stock STI blow up the motor on the dyno doing a baseline run. The ring lands are very weak.
What about an oil pump? Has IAG made one? I'm in need of one but I don't know what aftermarket oil pump is best for my 06.
The OEM 11mm pump is pretty good.
I need help finding a good oil pan for my 91 ej22t. I don't think the IAG one works because it's meant for ej25 or ej20 engines.
same
Should I get a this oil pan set up or AOS? or do I still need both? I just daily my EJ and I want to prolong its life.
Probably both. Especially if you do track days.
Fantastic video sir 👍
No of course not, its a damn good set of parts.
You sound like the automotive version of Norm MacDonald and that's awesome.
Mike would smile at a blown motor and the motor would fix itself
What about a 12mm oil pump or porting oil passages, are these things beneficial?
Some very good Subaru builders say the 11mm pump is sufficient. We are running a 12mm pump in our build.
Awesome. I wish i know this long time ago. 😔 might choose sti then if i did..
STI's suffer from the same issues as a WRX.
Do the porches have the same issues?
@@Eduardo_Espinozathey used to, back in the 70’s and 80’s.
But we are talking about the difference between a $50k and a $200k vehicle now; if they still had those issues there would be hell to pay!!
I trust this man to build my motor even if it’s made out of mud 😂
I changed my oil pickup tube, I regret not installing a baffle while I was at it, cuz I dont want to remove my pan again... it was such a pain.
The tube is like a glass straw so good deal anyway!
I just bought this kit from IAG got it on Friday
How to fix the EJ oiling issues?
Dry sump
Yes, but the price is hard .
All this is good and well but isn't the biggest issue oil staying in the head during lateral acceleration? Can't really fix that without a dry sump.
That's part of it although wet sump cars with the right stuff like this have had good success in staying together on the track.
Mike. Does this mean that I won't need oil catch can if I install this oil pan? I still own a 2004 STI (stock).
Oh! it has 230,000 miles
No it is still a good idea to get a catch can that is also an air oil separator for these engines if they are being driven hard, like in track use.
@@motoiq Thank you for the response!
So we do not need AOS anymore if we have this?
Like any flat engine, you still do.
What oil pan baffle would you suggest for 2nd gen BRZ
IAG or the new Varis pan
I’d recommend this video to any of my friends who plan to own a subie
You should make a series about fix blown HG issues for high horsepower VQ’s
We did an article about cooling system and headgasket stuff for VQ's on MotoIQ . motoiq.com/category/projects/nissan/350z/
Also run HR head gaskets and Juke head bolts.
@@motoiq Be interesting to test the theory on mls HG and juke head bolts on anything above 800whp. As the VQ’s are prone to cylinder walk and there isn’t much material between the head bolt and cylinder walls.
@@motoiq Loved the article. I read it when you released it. I’m currently ready to get my Boosted VHR back to test on the track.
