I think this talk is brilliant. I love the line “It’s the mortar, not just the bricks, that counts.” In my experience, this insight is true for agile teams doing software development as well as executive teams trying to steward companies. Teams who focus on building trust, prioritizing inclusion, extending empathy to one another, and emphasizing team over individual success are more resilient and able to succeed through the toughest challenges better than teams comprised of smart individual contributors.

One irony here is that the research quoted - from researchers at Purdue and MIT - seems to tacitly reinforce educational structures and priorities that are exactly opposite of what she proposes for companies. That is, she references research only from an elite “guild” of institutions that seem to prioritize individual IQ and performance - in their admissions and hiring decisions - over people who focus on social connection. I don’t think this is Ms. Heffernan’s “problem” to solve - but it does underscore how difficult the challenge of prioritizing social connection over individual performance really is.

google "reading the mind and the eyes test"
High achieving teams, those with a high "Social capital" = 1. sore very good at that test 2. let everybody participate/equal talking time, no "passengers", no "leaders" 3. had women in the group, gender balanced.
High individual IQ/talentedness < personal connectedness, helpfulness, kindness, loyalty, support, trust, where people feel ok to ask for help (because it will bring added value closer for which customer pay for )
Logo's and mission statements do motivate people as they are product of a social exercise and all agree to this mental scaffolding, and mental scaffolding matters.

15:25 "Motivation by money HAS to go" - the machiavellianic ceo will love this - the unions a bit less... :)

While I haven't hit that section yet in the video, isn't the statement actually being leveled AT the CEOs (and board of directors)? The statement itself adheres to the stakeholder theory of the firm (which Machiavellianic CEOs actually hate)
