    Just maybe the weight distribution affected your speed, when you were driving the bow was out of the water. When I was at the tiller, bow was trying to submarine due to extra poundage up front. But it was a great day. And we made the motor switch in very short time, took longer to carry mtrs to and from the truck. We did have fun.

    You know id completely remove the governor system on both of those motors. When i race gokarts you can squeeze out 4500rpms before the valves start to float.. get some heavier valve springs and a good mid range cam and i bet you'll run 20mph

    Do they have throttle limit screws in the throttle linkage? If so, back those out (or remove them completely). Should give you a few more rpm if the engine has the power to turn it.

      It actually was. Dad came up with the idea and it was a great idea.

  • @psgflier
    @psgflier 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Interesting trial for that new motor. As for speed difference, Dad standing up would create more air drag, more chop on the water = less water drag. With the float plane I'll actually taxi in circles to make chop on calm water to shorten the take-off.

    • @theeddies
      @theeddies  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      For the speed test he was actually sitting but there was definitely more chop on the water during the fastest run with the new engine. That is interesting, it makes sense but it feels like you are going slower in the wakes. I would have thought you would want as smooth water as possible with a float plane. Always learning! We also thought about the fact that I am 30lbs heavier which lifted the front up a bit more. All in all it performed as well as the engine supplied by a fairly reputable dealer, so I would call it a success as far as it goes. Thanks!

    • @psgflier
      @psgflier 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@theeddies More weight in the front would definitely make a difference, not only is the bow pushing water, but physics of water properties causes it to climb up the bow, pulling it down more, creating even more drag. It can reach a point where the boat will actually flip over. I don't think that boat is in any danger of that, but, if you've ever watched speed boat or hydro-plane races you may have seen that.
      Everything is relative, a plane like my Cub can't handle near the waves a larger plane can, even a Cessna 180 or a Beaver. A little chop adds air to the water making it less dense and less sticky. Humpback whales feed on herring, one of their feeding technics is to dive below a school of fish, circle around the perimeter of the school blowing bubbles. The density of the water is reduced in the " bubble net" and the fish can't swim through it to get away. The whales then swim through the fish, mouths wide open, and scoop them up.
      Glassy water and wire crossing are the two most dangerous conditions for a float plane. It's hard to see a wire crossing over a river. With glassy water depth perception is nearly impossible, you can't tell where the sky ends and the water begins. In WW2 flying boats would fire their forward guns into the water ahead of them as they landed so they could tell where the water started.

      I don't think there was any chance of the boat flipping, lol. I had not thought about the lines crossing those waters around you, especially at the altitudes you fly. That always reminds me of an old REM song with the line "Power lines have floaters so the airplanes won't get snagged"

    is this with the stoke 3blade prop? see you had the cavitation plate.. If you Get a longtail 2blade 6.5"-7" aluminum prop, and tap it with a m16x2.0, add a m8 set screw, itll get you up closer too 15mph-17mph ive reached 18mph with a 7" prop by myself. with the 2 blade props you gotta mess around with ythe motor height a tad bit.

    • @theeddies
      @theeddies  ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe this one was with the stock blade. My father tried a few 2 blades, but I don't think he ever got it dialed in the way he liked. He passed a few months after this video was made. I still have the boat but not a lot of motivation to mess with it. Thanks!
