Living in Braga Portugal - Out and about & a trip to Braga Parque Shopping Center

  • It's time again to get back out and share a little bit of what expat life in Portugal, specifically in Braga, can look like. I'm finally starting to feel like I'm settling into a rhythm here living in Portugal. In this episode I'll bring you guys along with me for an outing here in Braga, going to one of the malls here called Braga Parque Shopping Center, then around the center of Braga and off to grab lunch at a Portuguese grill house. I wanted to share some of these scenes of what you can find in Braga to try and help paint the picture of what things here are like. Often people only think about picturesque Portugal with the smaller older buildings.. however, there are also plenty of modern options for shopping and conveniences available here in not only this city but around the country as well. Something I like about life in Braga, Portugal is that you have a balance between the old Portugal and the new allowing you to live a balanced life in a fun little city that has a lot to offer. In this episode of Not Your Average Globetrotter, I wanted to share a pretty normal day here living in Portugal.

    Great video ..Braga looks like a nice place to visit. I once went in Miami to a Restaurant called Old Lisbon a Portuguese Restaurant that had a 100 plus ways to make bacalao cod salt fish.. the food was wonderful. Very tasty the Portuguese cuisine. but not as famous as other cuisines.

    This is a FANTASTIC video. Any walk thru town, slice-of-life and discussion on food will get a big thumbs up from me. 👍🏻 👍🏻 We hope to re-visit Braga this May and will definitely make the effort to try the restaurant you recommend. Can’t wait to revisit. Love your work and comparisons with Italy. I can relate! Grazie and Obrigado!

    What? I was watching your videos in preparation for moving to Bolzano and I decided to check your TH-cam page and you are living in Braga? I am from Braga what? Insane coincidence!
    I recommend Lamasan for some ramen near University of Minho, as well as Sabor da Fruta for delicious, affordable Portuguese food!
    You should also check Forno Mágico and Taberna Belga for some francesinha!
    Enjoy Braga wow I am so happy to see my city in your videos now
    Also near the city center you have Gosto Superior - a super delicious vegetarian food and the desserts are to die for 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼

      Hi Mariana!
      Wow!!! What a coincidence!!! Thank you so much for all of these recommendations, super excited to try them!
      I have to say you're going to miss Braga, I love Bolzano, but have to say that between the two cities I really prefer Braga 😆
      In Bolzano I recommend checking out Hopfen & Co for some local food, my favorite thing on the menu was the Knödel in Gulash. You'll hear people talk about Pimms, in my opinion it's a bit overrated... instead I'd go to Snack Jack, they had opened up right when I was moving away. Definitely take the cable car up to Oberbozen and take the train ride up at the top, there's not a ton to do up there other than hiking and grabbing a bite to eat, but for sure a fun experience!
      But when you're in Bolzano you definitely have to visit Merano! There's a fun gelateria next to the river called Constantin, one of my favorite places, worth sitting down and having a bowl there. Also the christmas market there is so much fun!
      Enjoy your time in Südtirol/Alto Adige :)
      Oh and if you're needing to improve your Italian or German, I know they used to have a cafe delle lingue in the center, a lot of really nice people participate in the different language tables that they offer (they have a bunch of languages there)

      as far as I understand the translation should be BBQ/Barbecue, in the moment I couldn't think of the right word and sometimes it is mistakenly translated to steakhouse because of it's association with what are sometimes called "Brazilian Steakhouse"

    Thanks! Love your channel. I've been watching for a really long time; since before you came to Portugal. I've been here (primarily Losbon) now since March 8 2022. I used to eat tons of nice beef steak in the US, but I've had a hard time finding it here in PT. Even meat from the local butcher (in São Domingo de Benfica) just isn't good steak. Any tips? Currently I'm in Porto exploring the area for a possible long term home. I was in Braga a couple days ago. VERY quaint. I think I could really love it there.

    Appetizers in Portugal might be extra if you want and in US the chips or break are free which costs pennies but the 15% tip which in a meal of 4 people can go easily up to $15 extra because in the US corporates making billions in profits can't pay their servers because they depend on customers to pay their Salaries ... Now that is sad and unfair for customers.

    • @lucchese20
      @lucchese20 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Only 15%? We had a “suggested” 30% tip show up in our bill for a restaurant here in the SF Bay Area. Ouch! ☹️

  • @module79l28

    With those prices, by portuguese standards it can hardly be considered a "tasca". In a real "tasca" you'd pay €10 for a complete meal with soup, main dish, drinks, dessert and coffee. And that's a bit of a stretch because in most of them you'd pay 8 or 9 euros max.

    I’m going to build a commercial underground greenhouse and above-ground farm.
    What are your thoughts?

    • @RafaelDiFuria
      @RafaelDiFuria  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      For any commercial venture I highly advise speaking with accountants and lawyers before even getting started dreaming up what you'd like to do. But the north is very green so I can imagine it would be a great place. However, as far as I'm aware we're facing a draught here.. so might not be the best timing right now for farming

      Masks only inside except for if you’re eating at a table, no testing or certification needed pretty much anywhere domestically.

    it it's someone's (not your personally but anyone) first time abroad and they're cheapscating over a piece of bread and butter, maybe they're better off staying in their country and spare the Portuguese from the cheapscating. An additional 2-3 euros isn't gonna kill anyone when visiting a beautiful country. Not to mention that the restaurants pay their workers and the visitor won't have to pay their wages (20% - 30%) in tips, like you "have to" in the US.

    • @RafaelDiFuria
      @RafaelDiFuria  ปีที่แล้ว

      Something I've never understood... and I've worked as a server and a barista... regardless of wether it's 2-3 euros or 20%-30%
      Why is it the customer's problem that their boss doesn't pay enough?
      Why charge an extra/seperate fee for the cover charge and not just simply include an equivalent amount within the cost of the dishes and make sure that no matter what someone orders, that will cover enough to make it worth the restaurants time. to me it's all a bit silly...

    • @zafira976
      @zafira976 ปีที่แล้ว

      btw, your videos are great man and my point of view is nothing personal towards you in any way. I am just giving a mediteranian point of view to how things are in the Med as a general rule and what's considered decent. Just like in terms of what should the decent thing to do in the US where it's a given that the restaurant doesn't pay their staff. I'm not going to change the US now, am I? I'll walk into a restaurant with the 20% on top of the normal bill in mind. @@RafaelDiFuria
